There is no universal switch that keeps every public image, post, or portfolio page online while preventing every AI developer from accessing it. The workable approach is layered: use the hosting service’s own opt-out or objection process, add a file-level preference when a supported service honors it, and configure crawler controls if you own the website. Each layer covers different systems and purposes, so an opt-out from a platform’s model training does not automatically stop independent scraping, product-analysis tools, safety systems, or copies already collected.
What you can and cannot stop
“AI training” describes several activities that are often grouped together but are controlled separately:

- Generative-model training: using your work to adjust or build a model that creates new text, images, audio, or video.
- Inference or reference features: using an uploaded work as a style, structure, or similarity reference without necessarily adding it to a training dataset.
- Product improvement: analyzing content to improve search, recommendations, moderation, reliability, or other service features.
- Safety and discovery: scanning content for abuse prevention, copyright or fraud detection, indexing, and recommendations.
- Independent collection: a crawler, downloader, or data broker copying a publicly reachable file outside the host’s own systems.
A platform setting usually binds that platform and its named partners. An embedded file preference reaches only services that can read and honor it. A crawler directive is a request or site policy for bots visiting a domain you control. None of these controls reliably erases material that was copied or used before you changed the setting.

Start with the host: account, region and visibility determine the available control
Opt-out menus and objection forms are not standardized. A personal and business profile can have different defaults, and a setting available in one country may not exist in another. Public, unlisted, and private content can also be treated differently.
Make an inventory before changing anything
- List every place the work appears: portfolio host, social network, marketplace, cloud storage, newsletter, and any AI service to which you uploaded a draft.
- Record whether each item is public, limited to followers, unlisted, or private.
- Note the account type (personal, creator, business, education, or organization) and the country or regional account setting.
- Open the service’s current privacy, AI, content-use, and objection pages. Look for separate language about training, product improvement, safety, search, and third-party sharing.
- Save a copy or screenshot of the setting and its effective date. Policies and labels can change.
Do not assume that toggling a “do not train” option disables every analysis function. Look for the exact covered use, the effective date, whether it applies to new uploads only, and whether partners receive the same instruction.
ArtStation: a clear default for generative-AI dataset use
ArtStation’s terms state that projects receive a NoAI designation by default. The creator must actively remove that designation to disable it. The terms prohibit collecting, aggregating, mining, scraping, or otherwise using NoAI Content in generative-AI datasets, in model development, or as inputs.
The same terms make a broader commitment: ArtStation says it will not use or license user content for generative-AI datasets, development, or inputs whether or not the content is marked NoAI. That commitment is different from its permission to use content to improve safety and discovery tools, including search and recommendations.
What the designation means in practice
- Covered: ArtStation’s own generative-AI dataset, development, and input uses, as described in its terms.
- Not equivalent to: a technical barrier that stops an unrelated scraper from downloading a public image.
- Separate uses: safety and discovery improvements remain permitted under the terms.
- Action: check the project’s current NoAI state and leave the default in place unless you intentionally choose otherwise.
If you previously removed the designation, restoring it expresses the preference going forward. It does not establish that a copy already collected by another party has been deleted or that prior model use can be reversed.
Adobe Creative Cloud and Document Cloud: distinguish generative training from content analysis
Adobe’s content-analysis FAQ, updated June 4, 2026, separates generative-AI model training from product-improvement analysis. Adobe says it does not analyze customer content to train generative-AI models unless a customer submits that content to Adobe Stock.

Product-improvement analysis has separate controls, exceptions, and account behavior. Adobe says business profiles are automatically opted out of product-improvement content analysis, while controls for personal accounts can vary. Files kept locally on your device are not analyzed for product improvement.

- Content you proactively submit for a feature or service.
- Feedback, beta programs, or user studies that include submitted material.
- Public contributions such as Adobe Stock and Behance.
- Generative-AI training connected to content submitted to Adobe Stock, as described in the FAQ.
Adobe describes Firefly as trained on licensed content, including Adobe Stock, and public-domain material whose copyright has expired. That description does not mean Adobe never analyzes any work; it means the stated generative-training rule and the product-analysis rule are different.
How to check your Adobe setting
- Sign in to the relevant Adobe account and identify whether it is a personal or business profile.
- Open the account privacy or content-analysis controls, not only the generative-AI feature preferences.
- Read the exceptions shown for feedback, beta programs, studies, and public contributions.
- Review each upload destination separately. A file stored locally is treated differently from one processed on Adobe servers or submitted publicly.
- Keep a record of the setting and revisit it after major policy or interface changes.
Content Credentials: a file-level preference for supported services
Adobe’s Content Credentials preference embeds a signal in the file asking supported generative-AI services not to train on the work or use it to create new content. Adobe currently names Firefly and Spawning as supporting services. This is an interoperable preference, not a universal lock: it works when the receiving service can read the credential and has chosen to honor it.
Requirements and trade-offs
- You need a verified name or at least one connected social account.
- Turning on the preference makes the work ineligible for upload to Adobe Stock.
- The preference also blocks use in Firefly features such as Style Reference, Structure Reference, and Generate Similar.
- The credential travels with the file, but a screenshot, re-export, format conversion, or stripped metadata may remove it.
Use the preference on an original export before posting. Keep an untouched master so you can create a version with or without the credential for different destinations. Treat the credential as a signal to named, compatible services; it cannot promise that an unknown crawler, a person, or an unsupported model will never access a publicly posted image.
Meta’s EU objection route: regional and age limits matter
Meta’s April 2025 announcement described plans to train in the European Union on public posts and comments shared by adults and on user interactions with Meta AI. It described notifications containing an objection form for EU-based users. The announcement also says private messages are not used unless a person shares them with Meta AI, and public data from EU accounts belonging to people under 18 is excluded. A March 27, 2026 clarification appears on the same announcement page.

How to approach the objection
- Confirm that the account is based in the EU and that the user is an adult under the policy described.
- Look for the current in-product notification or privacy-center objection form; do not rely on a menu path copied from another country.
- Submit the objection for the account and keep the confirmation.
- Check whether the form covers public posts, comments, and interactions with Meta AI separately.
- Review the current notice again if you change region, account type, or the visibility of the content.
This route should not be generalized to every country. It addresses the policy and geography described in Meta’s notice; it is not evidence that public content everywhere is excluded from all Meta systems or from unrelated crawlers.

If you upload drafts directly to an AI service
Publishing a portfolio and submitting a file to an AI assistant are different events. For individual ChatGPT accounts, OpenAI’s current Help Center says you can turn off Improve the model for everyone under Settings > Data controls, or select Do not train on my content in the Privacy Portal. Either choice applies to new conversations.
There is an important exception: if you submit response feedback, the associated conversation may be used to improve models despite opting out. Business services and API defaults are different, so do not apply the individual-account setting to an organization workspace or API project without checking its terms.
Self-hosted portfolios: crawler controls add a site-owner layer
When you control the domain, you can publish crawler directives and use bot-management features from your host or CDN. These controls tell visiting bots what your site permits. They do not compel every crawler to comply, and they do not control copies hosted elsewhere.
A cautious implementation workflow
- Read the current robots.txt and bot-control documentation for your host, CDN, or managed portfolio service.
- Decide whether you want to restrict all automated access or only identified classes of crawlers. A blanket rule can affect accessibility tools, monitoring, archival systems, or ordinary search indexing.
- Place the directive in the domain’s robots.txt location or the host’s supported bot-control panel, using the exact syntax documented by that provider.
- Test the published file from the public URL and confirm that it is valid plain text.
- Monitor server logs and rate limits for unexpected automated traffic; use authentication or a firewall for material that must not be publicly retrievable.
- Recheck the rules after moving hosts, changing a CDN, or redesigning the site.
A robots directive is not the same as access control. If a work must remain private, require authentication and avoid publishing the file URL. If it must remain publicly viewable, accept that a determined party may still copy it even when a crawler follows the directive.

The AI Rights Project’s framework evaluates controls by disclosure, accessibility, scope, prospective effect, consistency, third-party transfer, and partner propagation. Its grades describe documented policy architecture, not proof of real-world enforcement. That distinction is useful when comparing a written promise with a technical barrier.

Assuming public means permissionless—or protected
Public visibility makes copying technically possible, but a platform may still promise not to use the work for a specified purpose. Neither fact replaces the other. Keep the work online only where the remaining uses are acceptable to you.

Deleting or privatizing a page can reduce future access from that host, but it does not establish that downloaded files, screenshots, caches, or prior training examples have been removed. The available policies do not provide a reliable universal method for reversing past training use.
Stripping metadata accidentally
Re-exporting through an editor, converting formats, or posting a screenshot can remove a Content Credentials preference. Check the posted file rather than assuming the original credential survived.
Blocking all bots without checking the consequences
A broad crawler rule can reduce ordinary search visibility and interfere with legitimate services. Start with the narrowest rule that matches your objective, then test the site and review logs.
Failing to preserve originals and records
Keep an original master, the export used online, the date of each opt-out, and confirmation emails or screenshots. These records help you restore a setting, prove what preference was expressed, and identify which copy was distributed where.

- Classify the work. Mark each file as public, limited, or private and note whether it is a finished piece, draft, client asset, or submission.
- Map the services. Separate portfolio hosts, social platforms, marketplaces, cloud storage, and AI tools to which you upload files.
- Set host controls. Use the platform’s current opt-out or objection route for the correct region and account type.
- Check secondary uses. Confirm whether product improvement, safety, search, recommendations, feedback, or partner transfer remain permitted.
- Add a file signal. Apply Content Credentials where the service supports them and accept any marketplace or feature limitation.
- Configure your domain. If you own the site, publish narrowly scoped crawler directives and use authentication for anything that must not be public.
- Audit periodically. Revisit settings after policy updates, account changes, a move to a new host, or a new public upload.
This plan keeps the work online while making your preference explicit to the services most likely to encounter it. It also leaves a realistic boundary: no documented setting guarantees that every independent crawler or model will comply.

Can I keep my Instagram account public and opt out of AI training?
Only the controls offered for your account’s country, age, visibility, and account type can answer that question. Meta’s described objection route is specific to EU-based users and the public adult content covered in its notice; it should not be treated as a worldwide Instagram setting.
Does a NoAI label stop someone from scraping my artwork?
No. A NoAI designation expresses ArtStation’s stated restriction on its own generative-AI dataset, development, and input uses. It is not a technical block on an unrelated crawler downloading a public file.
Will adding a Content Credentials preference remove my image from existing datasets?
No. It signals a preference to supported services when the credential remains attached to the file. It does not establish deletion of copies or reversal of prior model training.
What is the safest way to publish a portfolio while limiting automated collection?
Use the host’s current policy controls, add a supported file-level preference, and apply narrowly scoped crawler directives on a domain you control. For material that must not be copied, use authentication rather than relying on robots.txt alone.
