You can turn off model-training use for future consumer chats in ChatGPT and Gemini, but the controls work differently. ChatGPT keeps new chats in your history while excluding them from training. Gemini’s Keep Activity setting stops future chats from appearing in Gemini Apps Activity or being used to train models, with exceptions and retention limits. Current official Meta instructions could not be verified, so this guide does not give steps for Meta AI.
Turn off training use in ChatGPT

In ChatGPT, open Settings > Data controls.

Turn off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says new conversations will still appear in your chat history but will not be used to train its models. See OpenAI’s data-controls guidance.

OpenAI also offers a separate privacy request: use the Do not train on my content option through its Privacy Portal. This is a separate route from changing the ChatGPT setting.
If you use an organization-provided business account, the organization may control personal-data settings. A work or school account may therefore behave differently from a personal account.

Open Gemini Apps Activity from the Gemini app or web app.

Select Turn off or Turn off and delete activity. Google says future chats will not appear in Gemini Apps Activity or be used to train models, unless you send feedback. See Google’s Gemini Apps activity instructions.

Turning off activity does not mean every conversation is immediately erased. Google says chats may be kept for up to 72 hours to provide the service, process feedback, and protect Google, users, and the public.

For Gemini, Google says activity sent to service providers is disconnected from the Google Account and retained for up to three years. Deleting account activity does not remove data that human reviewers have already reviewed. These details are in Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub. Google also notes that turning off Gemini Keep Activity does not switch off settings in other Google services or eliminate other data processing.

Current official Meta instructions and regional differences could not be verified for this guide.
