Check your exact HTC model before trying to open its back: some older phones have a removable cover with a bottom notch, some covers slide off, and newer models may have a sealed rear housing. Use the procedure in the manual or support page for your model and regional variant; a method that works on one HTC phone can damage another.
Identify your HTC model and cover type first
Find the model name and variant in the phone’s settings, on its packaging, or on its original documentation. Then look up that exact model’s HTC support page or manual. Do not assume that two phones in the same product family use the same cover mechanism.

- Removable snap-on cover: The cited HTC Desire instructions use a small opening at the bottom edge, followed by a gentle lift from the bottom and sides.
- Sliding cover: The HTC Status manual describes pushing the battery cover out with both thumbs.
- Sealed rear housing: HTC warns that newer models have built-in batteries and advises against removing the back cover or battery yourself.
The procedures below apply only to the named models and variants. The cited snap-on-cover instructions use a thumb or finger; they do not call for a separate tool.

Open a removable-cover HTC Desire
Turn the phone so its back faces you and locate the small opening at the bottom edge. On the Desire 601, HTC places the notch near the charger/accessory jack. Keep the phone supported, create a small gap with your thumb or finger, and lift gently from the bottom and sides. Do not force a cover that does not begin to release.

HTC Desire 512 (Cricket)
- Hold the phone facing down.
- Use a thumb or finger at the small bottom opening to lift the cover.
- To replace it, align the top of the cover, then press the sides and bottom until it clicks into place.
HTC Desire 520 (Cricket) and Desire 526G dual sim
- Hold the phone with the bottom edge up and the back facing you.
- Place a finger at the bottom opening and create a small gap.
- Lift the cover gently from the bottom and sides.
- To close it, align the top first, then press the sides and lower part until the cover clicks.
HTC Desire 326G dual sim
- Use the bottom opening to create a small gap.
- Lift the cover from the bottom and sides.
- Press the cover down from top to bottom until it clicks.
HTC Desire 601
- Find the notch near the charger/accessory jack.
- Open the cover gently from the bottom and sides.
- When replacing it, align the top, then press the sides and bottom until it locks.
- Check that the cover has no gaps or bulges. HTC says this cover is for access to the battery, SIM, or SD card.
Open the sliding cover on an HTC Status
This method is specific to the HTC Status; do not use it on another model unless that phone’s own manual says to.
- Turn off the phone and hold it face down.
- Brace the phone’s body and push the battery cover out with both thumbs.
- To replace the cover, slide it back until it clicks.

If the back is sealed, do not pry it open
HTC’s UK service FAQ says not to remove the back cover or battery because doing so may cause physical damage and void the device warranty. It explains that newer models have built-in batteries and recommends contacting customer service about battery-life problems before deciding whether repair is needed. HTC also says service should be performed by HTC or an HTC-authorized service center. This is general guidance from HTC’s UK page, not a ruling on the warranty terms for every phone or region. What to do if the cover will not open or close
- It will not release: Stop rather than levering harder. Confirm the model and notch location in its manual; the opening point and direction differ between phones.
- You cannot find a notch: Your model may use a sliding cover or sealed rear housing. Check the model-specific instructions before applying pressure.
- The cover will not sit flush: Remove and realign it according to that model’s instructions. For the Desire 601, HTC specifically advises checking for gaps or bulges after reassembly.
- You need battery or internal repair on a sealed phone: Contact HTC or an authorized service center instead of attempting to remove the housing.
