The simplest way to open a .jxl image on Windows, macOS, or Linux is XnView MP. Install the build for your operating system, choose File > Open, and select the file. XnView MP says it reads JPEG XL natively on all three desktop systems without a plug-in or external codec, and it can save an opened image as JPEG or PNG when another application does not support JXL.
What a JXL file is and why it may not open
JPEG XL, normally shown with the .jxl extension, is an image format designed for efficient compression and modern image features. A JXL file can contain still images and may also contain animation, high-dynamic-range (HDR) data, or metadata that does not survive a simple conversion to an older format.

The extension alone does not guarantee that every photo application, file manager, or browser can decode the image. Support depends on the operating system release, the application, installed codecs, and—in the case of browsers—the browser engine and version. Treat JXL as a format that needs a known-compatible viewer rather than assuming that double-clicking will work everywhere.

XnView states that XnView MP “reads and displays JPEG-XL (.jxl) files natively on Windows, macOS and Linux, with no plugin or external codec required.” It also documents saving a JXL image as JPEG or PNG. That makes it the most straightforward graphical workflow when you need to view files on more than one desktop operating system.

Open a JXL file
- Download XnView MP’s build for your operating system and install it using that system’s normal installer or package process.
- Start XnView MP. Use File > Open, browse to the folder containing the image, select the
.jxlfile, and choose Open. - If you want JXL files to open there automatically, use your operating system’s Open with command, select XnView MP, and enable the option to use it as the default application for
.jxlfiles.
Opening the file in XnView MP avoids relying on a browser, a thumbnail extension, or an operating-system component whose availability can vary by release.
Save a compatible copy
- Open the JXL image in XnView MP.
- Choose File > Save As (or the application’s export command).
- Select JPEG for broad photographic compatibility or PNG when you need lossless raster output or transparency support.
- Choose a new filename and destination, then confirm the export.
Keep the original JXL whenever possible. Converting it can alter compression, metadata, animation behavior, color information, or other format-specific features.
How to open JXL images on Windows
Use XnView MP immediately
Install XnView MP for Windows and open the image with File > Open. If double-clicking the file does nothing or launches an unrelated application, right-click the file, choose Open with, select XnView MP, and set it as the default application for the .jxl extension.

The JPEG XL support list records a Windows Imaging Component and a Windows thumbnail handler. In practice, Explorer thumbnails or behavior in Photos can therefore depend on which imaging component and Windows version are installed. Windows editions should not be assumed to include JXL support by default; there is no single documented package-and-version matrix that applies to every edition.
If you need only to inspect an image, use XnView MP rather than spending time diagnosing a missing thumbnail handler. If you need system-wide previews, check whether your particular Windows release has a compatible imaging component and thumbnail handler, then restart Explorer after installation if thumbnails remain blank.

Convert for Windows applications that reject JXL
Open the file in XnView MP and use Save As to create a JPEG or PNG copy. Give the converted file a different name so the original remains available for software that understands JXL.
How to open JXL images on macOS
Use XnView MP for local files
XnView MP provides a native desktop viewer for macOS. Install the macOS build, open the application, and use File > Open. You can also associate .jxl files with XnView MP through Finder’s Open with and Always Open With controls.

Safari 17 and browser viewing
Apple’s Safari 17 release notes state: “Added support for JPEG XL.” WebKit’s Safari 17 feature article also lists JPEG XL among the newly supported image types. This means a JXL image hosted on a page—or opened through a local-file workflow permitted by Safari—may display in Safari 17 or a later release that retains the feature.
Safari support does not make macOS Preview universally compatible. The available evidence identifies a macOS viewer/Quick Look plug-in in the libjxl support list, but plug-in availability should be checked for the specific macOS release. If Preview or Finder shows an error, use XnView MP or convert the file to JPEG or PNG.
Preserve the original when exporting
Use XnView MP’s Save As or export command to create a JPEG or PNG copy for applications that cannot decode JXL. Exporting is a compatibility step, not a reversible operation: format-specific metadata, animation, or HDR information may not be retained.

How to open JXL images on Linux
Install a ready-made graphical viewer
XnView lists Linux packages in DEB, RPM, and AppImage formats. Choose the package that matches your distribution or use the AppImage when you prefer a self-contained application, then open the file through File > Open. Package installation details differ between distributions, so follow the normal method for the package type you downloaded.
Use the distribution’s libjxl packages
For a distribution-native setup, install libjxl with your package manager. The libjxl project says that most Linux distributions package it, but package names and repository versions vary. A distribution may provide the libraries separately from command-line utilities or desktop integrations.
After libjxl is installed, use a viewer built with JPEG XL support, such as ImageMagick, gThumb, Gwenview, or another compatible Qt or GTK application. A viewer that is installed does not necessarily include JXL decoding; confirm that the package was built with libjxl support if the file still fails to open.
Check the package and viewer combination
- Confirm that your distribution’s repository contains libjxl and that the installed version is intended for your release.
- Confirm that the viewer you selected was compiled with JPEG XL support.
- If a desktop viewer cannot open the file, test the same file in XnView MP to distinguish a damaged image from a missing library integration.
- Use a JPEG or PNG export when a downstream application has no JXL decoder.
Convert JXL to JPEG or PNG
Graphical conversion in XnView MP
For one or a few files, the graphical method is usually safest: open the JXL, choose File > Save As, select JPEG or PNG, and save to a new path. JPEG is the practical choice for broad compatibility with photographic software. PNG is appropriate when you need lossless raster output or transparency and accept that the resulting file may be larger.
Command-line conversion with libjxl
libjxl supplies the official djxl decoder and cjxl encoder tools. A typical workflow is to decode a JXL into a supported raster format with djxl, or to encode a compatible source image with cjxl. The exact options available depend on the libjxl version packaged by your operating system, so check the installed tools’ help output before scripting a large conversion.

cjxl input.png output.jxlUse a separate output filename and inspect a sample of converted files before processing a whole directory. Decoding and re-encoding can change compression settings, metadata, animation, color profiles, or HDR behavior. Do not overwrite the only copy of the original JXL.
Batch work and automation
For repeated conversions, make the input and output directories explicit, preserve extensions that identify the new format, and log failures rather than silently skipping them. Test animated and HDR files separately from ordinary still images; a command that works for a standard SDR still may not preserve every feature in a more complex JXL.

Safari 17 has documented JPEG XL support, but support outside Safari is version-dependent and differs between browser engines. Do not promise that any browser will display every local JXL file. Test the exact browser version used by your audience, especially when a page depends on animation, HDR, or embedded metadata.
For a dependable local-file workflow, use a standalone viewer such as XnView MP. For web delivery, provide a JPEG or PNG fallback when you cannot control the visitor’s browser, or verify support in the specific browsers and versions your users operate.

Troubleshooting when a JXL file will not open
Double-clicking does nothing
Use Open with and select XnView MP. If that works, set XnView MP as the default application for .jxl. This fixes an association problem without changing the image.
The file opens in a viewer but not in Explorer or Finder
Thumbnail and Quick Look support are separate from full image decoding. Windows thumbnail behavior can depend on a Windows Imaging Component and thumbnail handler; macOS Quick Look depends on the available plug-in and macOS release. Continue using the full viewer, or export a JPEG or PNG for folders where previews are essential.
A Linux application reports an unsupported format
Install libjxl from your distribution and verify that the application was built with it. Because repository versions and package splits differ, one viewer may support JXL while another installed on the same system does not. Test the file in XnView MP to isolate application integration from file validity.
A browser shows a broken image icon
Check the exact browser and version. Safari 17 documents support, but other browsers may not, and a browser update can change behavior. Use a JPEG or PNG fallback for recipients whose browser support cannot be verified.

The converted image looks different
That can be an expected consequence of changing formats. JPEG uses lossy compression; PNG is lossless for the raster data it receives but cannot preserve every JXL feature. Compare color, transparency, animation, metadata, and HDR behavior, and retain the source JXL for archival or later conversion.
