How to open JPEG XL images in Firefox

By Freedom251 Team · · 15 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Firefox 158 Stable and later open JPEG XL images without a setting change. Update Firefox to version 158 or newer, then open the .jxl file directly or visit the page that contains it. Firefox 158, released October 13, 2026, enables JPEG XL by default and advertises support with image/jxl in its normal HTTP Accept header.

If an image still fails, the cause is usually the file, the website’s response, or an older Firefox build—not a missing preference in current Stable.

Open a JPEG XL file in current Firefox

  1. Check your Firefox version. Open the Firefox menu, choose Help, then About Firefox. Install the offered update and restart the browser if Firefox is below version 158. The release channel matters: Stable, Beta, and Nightly can have different defaults.
  2. Locate the image. A JPEG XL file normally ends in .jxl. Make sure the complete filename is visible; some operating systems hide extensions and can leave a file looking like an image when it is actually an archive, a web page, or a partially downloaded file.
  3. Open it. Drag the file into a Firefox window, use Firefox’s file-opening command, or double-click it if your operating system associates .jxl files with Firefox. The image should appear in a browser tab.
  4. For an online image, open its page normally. When a server supplies a JPEG XL representation, Firefox can request it because its default Accept header includes image/jxl.

For a local file, no web server, account, plug-in, or conversion step is needed. Firefox reads the encoded image from disk. If the file opens in a tab, you can use the normal browser controls to zoom, save, or copy its address for that local document.

No about:config change or Firefox Labs switch is required for Firefox 158 Stable. Those instructions describe earlier experimental stages and can confuse users who are already on a current release.

What changed in Firefox 158

Firefox 158 Stable is the release identified in Mozilla’s current release record as enabling JPEG XL by default. The change is dated October 13, 2026. It affects direct file viewing and normal web content, provided that the site actually sends a JPEG XL image.

The browser’s default HTTP negotiation now includes the MIME type image/jxl. In practical terms, Firefox can tell a server, “I can decode JPEG XL,” alongside the other image types it accepts. A server, CDN, or image service can inspect that declaration and choose a representation. This is an offer of support, not a command to return JXL.

A site may continue to return JPEG, WebP, AVIF, PNG, or another format. It may not have a JXL copy, may apply its own browser policy, or may use a fixed URL that never performs content negotiation. Therefore, a Firefox user can have a current browser and still receive a fallback image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

JPEG XL is commonly identified by the .jxl extension. Its registered web MIME type is image/jxl. If a download has a different extension, do not rename it to .jxl and assume that will convert it; changing a filename does not change the encoded data. Likewise, a URL ending in .jxl is not proof that the response contains JPEG XL bytes.

If Firefox still does not display the image

Work through these checks in order. They separate a browser-version issue from a bad download and from a website that is not delivering JPEG XL at all.

1. Confirm that the file is really JPEG XL

  • Check that the filename ends in .jxl and that the download completed.
  • Be cautious with files obtained from a link that appears to be an image but downloads as an HTML error page, a login page, or a redirect. Firefox cannot display a web page as a JPEG XL image merely because the URL ends in .jxl.
  • If the file was renamed, restore the original name or obtain a fresh copy. Renaming changes only the label shown by the operating system.
  • If the download came from a generated link, try saving it again rather than reusing a zero-byte or unusually small partial file.

When a local file is valid but the tab remains blank or shows an error, note the exact Firefox version and whether the same file opens in another JPEG XL-capable application. That distinction helps identify a damaged file without assuming that a browser preference will repair it. A second application opening the file does not prove that a particular website is sending the same bytes to Firefox; it only helps isolate a local decoding or transfer problem.

2. Distinguish a local-file problem from a website problem

Try opening the downloaded file directly in Firefox. If the local copy works but the web page does not, the website is likely selecting another representation, returning the wrong content type, or failing to provide a usable fallback. Firefox’s support for JPEG XL cannot correct a server response that is not an image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the local copy also fails, download it again and verify that it is a complete JPEG XL file. A truncated transfer or a file with a misleading extension should be fixed at the source; repeatedly toggling browser settings is not a reliable remedy. If only one file fails while other known JXL files open, suspect that file or its transfer before suspecting Firefox.

3. Check the site’s image delivery

A site has to serve a suitable image for content negotiation to matter. Firefox advertising image/jxl does not make a server generate JXL, and it does not override a site that intentionally serves a different format. Websites may also use a fixed image URL, a content-delivery rule, or an HTML fallback that never performs negotiation.

For a site you control, verify that the response is an actual image and that JPEG XL is sent with Content-Type: image/jxl. Check the response rather than relying only on the filename. If a CDN caches variants, make sure its cache policy distinguishes requests that advertise different image formats; otherwise, one client can receive a representation selected for another client.

For a site you do not control, look for a download link, an alternate image option, or a non-JXL version supplied by the publisher. Do not assume that an image shown in another browser proves that the same URL is delivering the same format to Firefox. The other browser might be receiving AVIF, WebP, JPEG, or a server-generated fallback.

4. Confirm that you are not using an older channel

Firefox’s support history is channel- and version-specific. A current Stable installation should not need an experimental preference, but an older release, Beta build, or Nightly build may have different defaults. Check the version shown in About Firefox before following historical instructions. Record both the version number and channel when reporting a problem, because “Firefox” alone does not identify the implementation you are testing.

5. Check for an accidental override

If an old guide changed a JPEG XL preference, an override can make troubleshooting confusing even after an update. Search for the setting only to inspect whether it was modified; do not change unrelated advanced preferences. On current Stable, the normal default is the supported path, so remove an unnecessary override by using its reset control rather than guessing at a replacement value.

Ways to open a downloaded .jxl file

Drag and drop

Open Firefox and drag the file from your file manager onto a browser window. Firefox should create a tab for the image. This is often the quickest method when the operating system has no JPEG XL file association, and it avoids changing which application opens every JXL file.

Use Firefox’s file-opening command

From Firefox’s menu, choose the command for opening a file, select the .jxl image, and confirm. The exact wording can vary slightly by operating system and Firefox interface, but the action opens a local file without requiring a web server. If the file picker hides extensions, switch to a view that shows the full name so you can select the intended file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the operating-system association

If your system offers an “Open with” option, select Firefox. This changes how that system launches the file; it does not convert the image or alter Firefox’s decoder. If another application is assigned to .jxl, dragging the file into Firefox avoids changing the system-wide association. You can also keep a dedicated JPEG XL viewer as the default and use Firefox only for browser testing.

Why older instructions mention image.jxl.enabled

JPEG XL reached Firefox through experimental rollout stages, so older guides can be accurate for the release they describe and still be wrong for current Stable. Always identify the version and channel in an archived procedure.

Firefox 152 release and beta builds

Mozilla’s Firefox 152 release/build record described experimental JPEG XL support through Firefox Labs. In that context, a user could open Firefox Labs and enable the JPEG XL experiment. Those steps belong to that release-era rollout; they are not a prerequisite for Firefox 158 Stable.

Firefox 153 Nightly

Firefox 153 Nightly documentation described the preference image.jxl.enabled. Nightly preferences are not a dependable guide to the defaults in a later Stable release, and copying a Nightly instruction into current Stable can lead to unnecessary troubleshooting. A preference documented for Nightly may be renamed, removed, or enabled by default before a Stable release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you changed the preference in an old guide

Mozilla Support warns that changing advanced about:config settings can affect browser stability, security, and performance. If you are following an old-build procedure because you intentionally remain on that build, open about:config, search for image.jxl.enabled, and use the preference’s reset control to return it to its default value when you are finished testing. Resetting is safer than leaving an experimental override in place, but the preference itself is unnecessary on Firefox 158 Stable and later. Do not change unrelated settings while trying to diagnose one image.

What JPEG XL can contain

JPEG XL is a raster image format standardized as ISO/IEC 18181. The format supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation, high bit depths, wide color gamuts, and high-dynamic-range (HDR) imagery. It can also losslessly transcode existing JPEG images, preserving their JPEG data while placing it in a JPEG XL representation instead of decoding and recompressing the pixels.

Those capabilities explain why a file may be used for very different jobs: a photographic image, a transparent graphic, an animated asset, or a high-fidelity source for color-managed workflows. They do not guarantee a particular file size or visual result. Compression efficiency depends on the original image, encoder settings, color data, and the target quality level. A lossless file and a lossy file can have very different sizes even when they depict the same scene.

Feature support also does not tell you how a particular page will display the image. Animation, transparency, wide-gamut color, and HDR depend on the content, the browser’s rendering path, and the display environment. For ordinary viewing, the important first question remains whether Firefox can decode the file and whether the site delivered it correctly.

How Firefox and a website negotiate the format

When Firefox requests an image from a web server, its HTTP Accept header lists formats it can handle. Firefox 158 adds image/jxl to that default list. A server, CDN, or application can inspect the header and choose an appropriate representation.

Negotiation is not an instruction to send JXL in every case. The site may have its own compatibility policy, may not store a JXL copy, or may use an HTML image element with a fixed URL. A server can also return a fallback even when Firefox advertises JXL. Consequently, “Firefox supports JPEG XL” and “this website serves JPEG XL to Firefox” are separate statements.

If a page uses a <picture> element, the browser can select among declared sources based on their type and other attributes. If the page uses one ordinary <img> URL, the server may need to perform negotiation itself. These are different delivery designs, so a failure in one does not demonstrate a decoder failure in the other.

How website authors should provide fallbacks

MDN recommends offering an alternative format such as AVIF, WebP, or JPEG in a <picture> element when deploying JPEG XL on the web, because browser support is not universal across all browsers and versions. A typical pattern is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
<picture>
  <source type="image/jxl" srcset="photo.jxl">
  <source type="image/avif" srcset="photo.avif">
  <source type="image/webp" srcset="photo.webp">
  <img src="photo.jpg" alt="Description of the image">
</picture>

The JPEG XL source should be a genuine JXL resource, and each fallback should point to a file in the format named by its type. The final <img> remains the broadly recognizable fallback in this example. A site can use different ordering or formats, but it should not assume that every browser understands image/jxl. Keep meaningful alternative text on the fallback <img>; changing the image encoding should not remove the page’s accessibility information.

Test the complete chain, not only the JXL file. Verify that a Firefox 158 client receives or selects the JXL source, while a browser without JXL support reaches AVIF, WebP, JPEG, or another usable alternative. Also test a direct request for each URL so a mislabeled or missing asset is caught before publication.

Progressive rendering in Firefox

Mozilla’s implementation uses the Rust-based jxl-rs decoder. Mozilla describes progressive rendering: Firefox can begin displaying an image while additional image data is still downloading. Mozilla Hacks author Jake Archibald wrote, “That challenge was met; Google Research built jxl-rs, and it’s the core of our JPEG XL support in Firefox.”

Progressive display should not be confused with a promise of faster loading. Network speed, image dimensions, compression choices, server latency, and the rest of the page all influence the time to a complete image. No universal size-saving or performance percentage applies to every JPEG XL file. A progressive image can begin appearing sooner while still taking time to finish, and a slow server can prevent any format from displaying promptly.

JPEG XL compared with common fallback choices

The useful comparison is not simply which extension is newest. Choose based on the browser versions you must support, the image features you need, the quality and compression behavior of your particular assets, and whether you can provide a fallback.

Format Role when publishing for the web What to verify
JPEG XL (.jxl, image/jxl) Modern format with lossy and lossless modes, transparency, animation, high bit depths, wide gamuts, HDR, and lossless JPEG transcoding. Confirm that the target browser/version decodes it and that a fallback is available for other browsers.
AVIF Alternative format named by MDN for use as a fallback when deploying JXL. Check support in the browser audience you serve and test the actual images you encode.
WebP Alternative format named by MDN for a <picture>-based fallback. Check support and the visual result for the asset type you publish.
JPEG Broadly recognizable fallback named by MDN for deployment alongside JXL. Use it when compatibility with older or unknown clients is more important than JXL-specific features.

The table describes deployment roles, not a universal quality ranking. A format that is technically capable of a feature is not automatically the best choice for every image or audience. Compare your own encoded files at the quality settings you intend to ship, and keep an alternative when browser coverage is uncertain.

A practical troubleshooting checklist

  • Firefox version: Is the browser Firefox 158 Stable or later?
  • Channel: Are you testing Stable, Beta, or Nightly, and does the guide you followed match that channel?
  • File identity: Does the file really end in .jxl, and did the download finish?
  • Local test: Does the downloaded file open when dragged into Firefox?
  • Website response: Is the site returning an image rather than an HTML error, redirect, or login response?
  • Content type: If you operate the server, is the JXL response labeled image/jxl?
  • Negotiation: Does the server or CDN react correctly when Firefox advertises image/jxl?
  • Fallback: Does the page provide AVIF, WebP, JPEG, or another alternative through a <picture> element?
  • Experimental settings: Have you followed an old guide that changed about:config? On current Stable, reset unnecessary overrides.

Frequently asked questions

Does Firefox support JPEG XL?

Yes. Firefox 158 Stable, released October 13, 2026, enables JPEG XL by default. Firefox can also advertise image/jxl in its default HTTP Accept header. The website still has to send a compatible image or provide a suitable source.

How do I view a .jxl image in Firefox?

Update to Firefox 158 or later, then drag the file into a Firefox window, choose Firefox’s file-opening command, or open it through your operating system’s “Open with” option. No conversion is required for a valid JPEG XL file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Firefox won’t open my .jxl file. What should I try first?

Check the version, confirm that the download completed, and test the file locally by dragging it into Firefox. If it fails locally, obtain a fresh copy and verify that it is genuinely JPEG XL rather than an HTML error page or another renamed file. If it works locally but not online, investigate the website response and fallback.

Do I need to enable image.jxl.enabled?

Not on Firefox 158 Stable or later. That preference appeared in earlier experimental documentation, including Firefox 153 Nightly. Firefox 152-era release and beta testing used Firefox Labs. Those version-specific procedures should not be presented as a requirement for current Stable.

Can changing the filename convert an image to JPEG XL?

No. Renaming photo.jpg to photo.jxl changes only the filename. The encoded bytes remain JPEG, so Firefox cannot treat the renamed file as a genuine JPEG XL image.

Why does a site show another format even though Firefox supports JXL?

Support allows Firefox to decode JXL and advertise that capability; it does not require the site to serve JXL. The site may lack a JXL asset, use a fixed URL, apply its own compatibility policy, or intentionally return AVIF, WebP, JPEG, or another fallback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is JPEG XL always smaller or faster?

No universal percentage applies. JPEG XL supports several compression modes and image features, and results depend on the source image, encoder settings, color data, quality target, network, and server. Progressive rendering can show part of an image while it downloads, but it is not a guarantee of faster completion.

What should a website publish alongside JPEG XL?

MDN recommends an alternative such as AVIF, WebP, or JPEG, commonly declared with a <picture> element. Test that the JXL source is labeled image/jxl and that browsers without JXL support reach a valid fallback.

Bottom line for Firefox users

On Firefox 158 Stable or later, updating the browser and opening the .jxl file is the complete procedure. If that fails, investigate the file and the website’s delivered content before changing settings. The historical Firefox Labs and image.jxl.enabled instructions describe earlier experimental releases, not a required setup for current Stable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Firefox support JPEG XL?

Yes. Firefox 158 Stable, released October 13, 2026, enables JPEG XL by default and advertises image/jxl in its default HTTP Accept header.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I view a .jxl image in Firefox?

Update to Firefox 158 or later, then drag the file into Firefox, use its file-opening command, or choose Firefox from your operating system’s “Open with” menu.

Do I need to enable image.jxl.enabled?

No for Firefox 158 Stable or later. That preference and Firefox Labs instructions belong to earlier experimental releases and channels.

Why does a website show JPEG, WebP, or AVIF instead of JXL?

Firefox support does not force a site to send JPEG XL. The server may lack a JXL copy, use fixed URLs, apply its own policy, or deliberately provide a fallback.

What should I do if Firefox won’t open my .jxl file?

Check the Firefox version, confirm the download completed, and test the file locally. A misleading extension, HTML error page, truncated transfer, or incorrect server response can all prevent display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can renaming a JPEG file to .jxl convert it?

No. Renaming changes only the filename; it does not change the encoded image data.

Is JPEG XL always faster or smaller?

No. File size and loading depend on the image, encoder settings, quality target, server, and network. Firefox can progressively render supported JXL data, but no universal performance percentage applies.

The Bottom Line

Update to Firefox 158 or later and open the .jxl file directly. If it fails, verify the file and the website response first; current Stable does not require an about:config or Firefox Labs change.
