Fastest answer: open the link in Instagram, open the page menu, and choose Open in external browser when that command is available. If it is missing, copy the destination address, switch to Safari, paste it, and go. You can choose Safari (or another browser) as iOS’s default for system-opened web links, but that setting does not make Instagram hand every in-app page to Safari automatically.
Use Instagram’s external-browser command first
Instagram’s iOS browser has included a page-level handoff command labeled Open in external browser. A screenshot in the UK Competition and Markets Authority’s 2024 technical report shows the command in Instagram’s browser menu. It is the least disruptive way to move the page you are currently viewing into Safari or another browser.

Step-by-step
- Tap the website link in Instagram. Wait for the destination page to load inside Instagram rather than in a separate browser app.
- Open the page menu. Depending on the Instagram version and where the link came from, this may be a menu button in the browser toolbar or another control that opens a bottom sheet.
- Tap Open in external browser.
- Let iOS route the handoff. If Safari is your selected default browser, it is the browser iOS normally uses for HTTP and HTTPS links that the system opens. If another browser is selected, the handoff may go there instead.
The exact wording, icon, position and availability can change with Instagram updates and with the surface that supplied the link. The CMA image proves that the command existed in the documented iOS interface; it does not prove that every current Instagram build shows the same label for every post, profile, Reel, Story or message.
If the menu command is missing: copy the real destination
Copying the address is the dependable manual fallback. It works even when Instagram does not expose an external-browser button for the page you opened.
#1 Best Overall
- In Instagram’s in-app browser, open the page menu and choose the copy-link or copy-address action that is available.
- Check what was copied before leaving Instagram. You want the address of the destination website, not the URL of the Instagram post, Reel, profile or redirect page.
- Open Safari (or your preferred browser), tap the address field, paste the URL and navigate.
- If the site redirects to a login or consent page, complete that step in the external browser. A site may not carry over a session that existed only inside Instagram’s embedded browser.
Menu labels differ by Instagram release, so do not assume that a control called “Share” copies the destination. If the copied text begins with an Instagram domain when you expected a publisher’s domain, return to the page and look for a page-level copy-address action or use the site’s own link details.
What “external browser” means on an iPhone
The command means “hand this URL to a browser app outside Instagram.” It does not necessarily mean Safari. Since iOS 14, iPhone users have been able to select a default browser for HTTP and HTTPS links that iOS opens through the system. The external-browser command and the default-browser preference are therefore related but separate controls:
- Instagram’s command controls whether the currently displayed page is handed out of Instagram at all.
- iOS’s default-browser setting influences which browser receives a link after an app hands it to the operating system.
- Safari is the result only when Safari is the selected default or when you deliberately open Safari and paste the address yourself.
Choosing Safari as the default does not give Instagram a command to stop using its embedded browser. An app can keep presenting links in its own web view until you invoke the app’s handoff control.

The labels vary slightly by iOS release, but the setting is found in the system’s default-app controls. On recent iOS versions, use this path:
Rank #2
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Default Apps.
- Tap Browser App.
- Select Safari or the browser you want to receive ordinary HTTP and HTTPS links.
On older iOS releases, the equivalent control appears under Settings > [your browser] as Default Browser App. If you cannot find either label, use Settings search for “default browser.” The setting affects links opened by iOS and apps that ask iOS to open a link; it is not a universal override for an app’s embedded web view.
Why Instagram links open inside Instagram
Instagram controls the presentation of links inside its app. Keeping a destination in an embedded browser lets Instagram preserve its own navigation controls and return path instead of immediately switching the user to another app. From the user’s perspective, that means a link can be fully functional yet still remain inside Instagram until an explicit handoff is requested.
There is no documented iOS switch that commands every app to abandon its embedded browser. Apple’s default-browser documentation describes which browser handles system-opened HTTP and HTTPS links; it does not promise that an app must use that browser for every link it displays internally. The WebKit bug discussion often cited in this context likewise describes the practical limits of a website trying to force a page out of an app’s embedded browser.
Universal Links are not a general “escape to Safari” switch
Universal Links are a separate Apple mechanism. They associate an HTTPS domain with an installed app so that an eligible link can open the app instead of a browser. Their behavior depends on the site’s association file, the installed apps and the user’s context.
Rank #3
Apple’s developer documentation gives an important example: “When a user browses your website in Safari and taps a universal link in the same domain, the system opens that link in Safari, respecting the user’s most likely intent to continue within the browser.” That rule protects a person already browsing in Safari; it does not turn Universal Links into a command for extracting an arbitrary page from Instagram’s web view. A site also cannot rely on Universal Links to force Instagram to hand out every link.
Choose the method that matches your goal
| Method | Scope | Best use | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open in external browser | The page currently open in Instagram, when the command is present | Fastest one-page handoff | Availability and wording vary by Instagram version and link surface; it does not change Instagram’s future behavior |
| Copy address, then paste in a browser | Any destination whose URL you can obtain | Fallback when no handoff command appears | Requires checking that you copied the destination rather than an Instagram URL |
| Change iOS default browser | HTTP and HTTPS links opened through iOS | Making system-routed links open in Safari or another chosen browser | Does not force Instagram to bypass its embedded browser |
Troubleshoot common failure cases
The external-browser option is not visible
First, make sure the destination has actually loaded in Instagram’s browser; controls shown on the Instagram post or profile are not necessarily the browser’s page controls. Open the page menu again after the page finishes loading. If the option still does not appear, use the copy-and-paste method. Because Instagram changes menus, the absence of the label is not evidence that your iPhone is misconfigured.
The option opens a browser, but not Safari
Check Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App and select Safari. On releases with the older layout, check the browser’s Default Browser App setting. Then try the handoff again. If Instagram keeps the page in its own browser, the app has not performed an external handoff; the default-browser preference cannot override that app-level choice.

Inspect the pasted address. If it is an Instagram post, Reel or profile URL, you copied the social post rather than the publisher’s destination. Return to the in-app page, use its browser menu, and copy the address shown for the destination page. Some links also pass through a redirect before reaching the final site, so allow the browser to finish navigation and confirm the domain in the address bar.

The page looks different or asks you to sign in again
An embedded browser and Safari can have different cookies, storage and login sessions. A site may therefore show a consent banner, a login prompt or a different layout after the handoff. This is normal browser-context behavior, not proof that the URL was changed. Sign in only on the intended destination domain and review the address before entering credentials.
The browser opens, then immediately returns to an app
An associated app may claim a Universal Link, or the site may intentionally redirect to an installed app. Universal-Link routing is contextual and controlled by the website-app association; it is not governed solely by your default-browser choice. If you need to remain in Safari, use the browser’s own address field and avoid tapping the page’s app-opening prompt.
Can you make Instagram always open every link in Safari?
There is no authoritative evidence of a current Instagram setting that permanently routes every link to Safari. The documented control is page-level: invoke Open in external browser for the page you are viewing. For links where that control is unavailable, copy the destination and paste it into Safari. Setting Safari as the iOS default improves the result for links that Instagram actually hands to iOS, but it does not compel Instagram to hand out all embedded pages.

- Verify the destination domain before signing in, especially after a shortened or redirected link.
- Do not treat the presence of a Safari tab as proof that the site is trustworthy; browser choice and site identity are separate questions.
- Expect separate cookies and permissions between Instagram’s embedded browser and Safari. You may need to grant location, notification or camera access again.
- If a page contains sensitive information, close the Instagram browser tab after copying the address so the destination is not left in the app’s history or tab list.
What to remember
Use Instagram’s page menu and choose Open in external browser whenever it is offered. If it is not, copy the destination URL and paste it into Safari. Keep Safari selected as iOS’s default browser if you want system-routed links to open there, but do not expect that preference to disable Instagram’s in-app browser. Apple’s Universal Links system handles website-app associations and user context; it is not a universal escape mechanism.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I open an Instagram link in Safari on my iPhone?
Open the link in Instagram, open the in-app browser’s page menu, and tap “Open in external browser.” If that command is unavailable, copy the destination address, open Safari, paste it into the address field and navigate.
Best Value
Why does Instagram keep opening links inside Instagram?
Instagram controls its embedded browser at the app level. iOS’s default-browser setting affects links handed to the system, but it does not require Instagram to hand every embedded page to Safari.
Will changing my iPhone’s default browser make Instagram always use Safari?
No. Since iOS 14, the selected default browser receives HTTP and HTTPS links that iOS opens through the system. Instagram can still keep links in its own browser until you use its external-browser command.

Are Universal Links a way to force Instagram pages into Safari?
No. Universal Links associate websites with apps and route links according to the association and the user’s context. They do not provide a general command for extracting an embedded Instagram page into Safari.
