To manage Safari tabs on iPhone, open the tab overview, where you can switch to a page or close it. To open a link separately, touch and hold it, then tap Open in New Tab. The exact route to the tab overview depends on your Safari layout: use the Tabs button if it appears, or tap More > All Tabs.
How do I open a new tab in Safari on iPhone?
- Open Safari and go to the page with the link.
- Touch and hold the link.
- Tap Open in New Tab.
By default, the new page may come to the foreground. To have links open in the background instead, go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Open Links and select In Background. This changes whether the new tab takes focus; it is not necessary to create a tab. Labels or settings can vary with your iOS version. See Apple’s instructions for opening and closing Safari tabs.

How do I find and switch to an open tab?
- In Safari, tap the Tabs button. If it is not shown in your layout, tap More > All Tabs.
- Browse the page previews in the tab overview.
- Tap the preview for the page you want to view.
If the page is missing, check whether you are viewing a different Tab Group. Groups keep sets of tabs separate, so a page may be open in another group.
How do I close a Safari tab?
Close one tab
- Open the tab overview using the control available in your layout: Tabs, or More > All Tabs.
- Tap the close control on the preview of the tab you want to remove.
Close all tabs in the current Tab Group
- Open the tab overview.
- Touch and hold Done.
- Choose Close All [number of] Tabs.
This action applies to the current Tab Group; it does not mean all tabs in every group are closed. Apple documents these controls in its Safari tab instructions.

How do I reopen a recently closed tab?
- Open the tab overview.
- Touch and hold the New Tab button.
- Tap the page you want in the recently closed list.
You can also add Recently Closed Tabs to the Safari start page, if you prefer to find closed pages there. Apple explains start page options in its Safari settings guide.
Can I see Safari tabs from another Apple device?
Yes. Use the same Apple Account on both devices and turn on Safari in iCloud settings. On iPhone, enable iCloud Tabs on the Safari start page to see tabs from your other devices. If tabs do not appear, Apple recommends checking that device software is current and that two-factor authentication is enabled. Follow Apple’s iCloud Tabs setup and troubleshooting steps.

When are Safari Tab Groups useful?
Tab Groups are optional: you do not need to make one to open, find, or close tabs. They can help keep related pages together. Safari also lets you create and rename groups, move tabs between them, reorder tabs, and pin a tab within a group. See Apple’s guide to organizing Safari tabs.
