How to Open Family Safety in Windows 11 (There’s No Dedicated Widget)

Windows 11 does not have a documented, built-in Family Safety card for its Widgets board. To manage family settings, open Windows Security and select Family options, or use the Microsoft Family Safety app or family account website. The Widgets board is a customizable dashboard, while Family Safety controls live in separate settings and tools.

Is there a Family Safety widget in Windows 11?

Microsoft’s Windows Widgets guidance describes a board of cards that users can add, remove, move, resize, and customize, but it does not identify Family Safety as a built-in widget. Don’t follow instructions that promise a Family Safety card unless you can confirm it is available on your specific device.

Widgets are meant to provide quick information or actions, not replace full applications. Privacy settings for a widget depend on the app or service behind it; Microsoft says to check the widget’s “Powered by” information and that service’s settings. Microsoft’s Widgets guidance explains the dashboard and its settings.

How to open Family Safety from Windows Security

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu or Windows search.
  2. Select Family options.
  3. Follow the link to the family settings or Family Safety tools.

The Family options page is an access point, not a widget or a full set of controls embedded in the Widgets board. Labels and navigation can differ by Windows version. See Microsoft’s Family Options in the Windows Security App page for its documented role.

Choose where to manage family settings

Route Best for What to know
Windows Security > Family options Getting to family settings from a Windows PC It links to family tools; it is not a dedicated Widgets card.
Microsoft Family Safety app Managing settings through an app Microsoft provides the app as a way to access Family Safety.
Microsoft family account website Managing settings in a browser Family group organizers can manage members, limits, permissions, and reports.

Microsoft’s Family Safety setup guide describes creating a family group, assigning roles, adding members, connecting devices, and configuring controls. The Microsoft Family Safety app page covers the app route.

Set up the family group and connect a child’s Windows device

Establish the family group

Start at the Microsoft family account site and create or use a family group. Organizers can add or remove members and manage limits and permissions. Add the people whose accounts you intend to manage, then connect their devices before relying on device-specific controls or reports.

Connect the child’s Windows account

  1. On the child’s PC, open Settings and go to Accounts.
  2. Open the family section and follow the prompts to allow the child to sign in.
  3. Have the child sign in with the account in the family group. Microsoft says the device appears among connected devices after the child signs in.

Microsoft advises that a child’s Windows account should be a standard user, not an administrator, because Family Safety features may not work properly for an administrator account. Settings labels may vary by Windows build; use the current Accounts settings if the path differs. See Microsoft’s device connection instructions.

What Family Safety can control

Device screen time

Family Safety offers screen-time controls for connected devices. Configure them through the app or family account website, and make sure the device is connected to the family group so the relevant controls can apply.

App and game limits

App and game limits can be scheduled by day. Microsoft says these limits can span connected Windows, Xbox, and Android devices. The specific devices and accounts still need to be connected to the family group. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for setting app and game limits.

Web filtering and website limits

Website limits are not the same as app and game time limits: Microsoft’s app-and-game limit guidance says website time limits do not work as website limits. Use the documented website-blocking controls for web restrictions instead. Web and search reporting also depends on supported browser use, so don’t assume activity in every browser will appear.

Activity reporting: what appears and who can see it

Activity reports can include web and search activity, app and game use, and screen time, depending on the enabled settings and connected devices. Reporting is optional; an organizer must enable it to collect and view reports. Web and search activity is reported only for supported browser use. Microsoft explains the details in its Family Safety activity reporting guide and roles and permissions page.

Why controls or reports may not appear

  • The device is not connected: Connect it to the family group and have the child sign in with the account in that group.
  • The child’s Windows account is an administrator: Change it to a standard user; Microsoft warns that family features may not work properly with an administrator account.
  • Activity reporting is off: An organizer needs to enable reporting before reports are available.
  • You expect website limits to behave like app limits: Use website-blocking controls for web restrictions; app/game time scheduling does not impose website time limits.
  • Browser activity is missing: Web and search reporting is limited to supported browser use.
  • You are looking for a Widgets card: Family Safety is accessed through Windows Security, the app, or the family account website; Microsoft’s Widgets guidance does not document a dedicated card.
