GIMP can open, edit, and export Photoshop Document (PSD) files. Choose File → Open… to load the PSD, inspect the imported layers and effects, and make your changes. Save a working copy as GIMP’s native .xcf project, then use File → Export As… when you need to produce a PSD for another application.
The important limitation is compatibility: a PSD that opens successfully is not automatically a perfect round trip. GIMP documents that some PSD features may not load or may look different, and that some blending modes do not have exact Photoshop equivalents. Check the visual result in the application that will receive the exported file.

What happens when GIMP opens a PSD?
PSD is Photoshop’s native document format. It can contain a layered image rather than a single flattened picture, so opening one in GIMP may give you a layer stack, transparency, masks, and layer effects that you can continue working with. GIMP’s PSD support is sophisticated, but the project’s own glossary describes it as imperfect: the online PSD specification does not cover every detail, and some features may be missing or rendered differently.
That distinction matters for hand-offs. “The file opened” only proves that GIMP could read enough of the document to create an image. It does not prove that every layer behavior, effect, mask, or blend calculation matches the original. Inspect the result before you edit, preserve an XCF working copy, and check the exported PSD in its destination application.

Open a PSD in GIMP
The basic opening process uses GIMP’s standard Open command.
- Launch GIMP.
- Choose File → Open…. GIMP documents this command in its Open documentation.
- Browse to the PSD file, select it, and choose Open.
- Wait for GIMP to import the document. A layered PSD can take longer than a simple image because GIMP has to interpret the document structure.
- Before changing anything, compare the canvas with the original reference if you have one. Look for missing content, altered transparency, unexpected visibility, and effects that do not look as expected.
If the file opens with a warning or with an image that looks different, do not immediately overwrite the source PSD. Keep the original untouched while you determine which parts imported correctly.
Inspect the imported document before editing
A short inspection prevents you from building new work on an incorrect interpretation of the PSD.

Check the layer stack
Look at the Layers dock and confirm that the expected layers are present, named sensibly, and arranged in the expected order. Layer order affects what is visible, so a layer that imported but moved relative to another can change the appearance without producing an obvious error message.
Check visibility and transparency
Review which layers are visible and whether transparent areas still appear transparent. If the PSD relied on hidden layers, masks, or partially transparent artwork, compare those areas with the source. GIMP’s documentation specifically recommends checking important effects and masks because PSD compatibility is not complete.

Check important effects and blend behavior
Zoom into areas that depend on complex layer behavior, shadows, glows, overlays, or other blending. A subtle difference can be hard to see at a distance. GIMP warns that not all blending modes can be converted to exact Photoshop equivalents, so inspect the areas where layers interact rather than assuming the imported pixels are identical.
Decide whether the file is safe to continue
If the document is visually correct enough for your task, continue while keeping the original PSD as a separate file. If a critical effect is already wrong, ask for a flattened reference image or make the correction in the application that created the PSD before proceeding. GIMP can edit the imported result, but it cannot restore information that was never interpreted correctly.

Edit the PSD in GIMP
Once the import passes your inspection, edit the image using GIMP’s normal tools. The exact operation depends on the artwork, but the safe pattern is consistent: make a change, check the canvas at a useful zoom, and periodically verify the layer stack.
Keep edits organized
- Work on the appropriate layer instead of painting on a background layer by accident.
- Preserve visibility states while you test an edit, especially when the PSD contains alternate versions of artwork.
- After a major change, inspect edges, transparent areas, and regions where multiple layers overlap.
- Do not treat the imported PSD as your only recoverable copy. Create an XCF working file before extensive editing.
Save an XCF working copy early
GIMP uses XCF as its native project format. XCF is the format intended to preserve image information such as layers and transparency, allowing you to return to an editable GIMP project later. Choose File → Save As… (or the Save command in a version that presents the native-project workflow), give the file an .xcf extension, and save it in a separate working location.
Keep the original PSD as an untouched source and use the XCF as your working document. This gives you three useful states: the original incoming file, the editable GIMP project, and any PSD or other format you export for delivery.

Save versus export in GIMP
GIMP makes a deliberate distinction between its native project format and other file formats. The GIMP documentation states: “GIMP uses the Save command only for saving images in its native XCF format. When you need your image in a different file format, you can use the Export command.” See the Export File documentation for the workflow.

Export an edited GIMP image as a PSD
When you need to send the edited image back as a PSD, use GIMP’s export workflow.
- Open the XCF working file that contains your finished edits.
- Choose File → Export As….
- Enter a filename ending in
.psd, or choose Photoshop image from the available file-type choices. GIMP describes both approaches in its Export Image as Photoshop image documentation. - Choose the destination and confirm the export.
- Review any options shown by the PSD exporter. Use the settings appropriate to the receiving workflow rather than accepting an assumption that every GIMP feature has a one-to-one PSD equivalent.
- Open the exported PSD in the intended destination application and compare it with the XCF. Check the layer stack, visibility, transparency, masks, and blend-dependent areas.
Exporting does not turn GIMP’s internal representation into a guaranteed Photoshop-equivalent document. GIMP specifically notes that not all blending modes can be converted exactly. A PSD that looks correct in GIMP can still change when another application interprets its layer modes.
Understanding PSD layer and blending compatibility
Layer fidelity is the main reason to verify an exported PSD. GIMP’s glossary says that some PSD features may not load or may look slightly different. The practical consequence is that compatibility must be judged on the document you are exchanging, not on the file extension alone.

Why layer modes can change
Applications can use different formulas, names, and compositing rules for layer modes. GIMP’s PSD export documentation says that its legacy layer modes are closer to Photoshop equivalents for many modes, while legacy modes do not support setting the composite mode. It also describes Photoshop’s “Blend Clipped Layers as Group” behavior in relation to GIMP’s “Clip to Backdrop” composite mode.
These are implementation details with visible consequences. If a design relies on clipped layers, grouped compositing, or a nonstandard blend mode, inspect the result at full size in the receiving application. Do not promise a pixel-identical round trip solely because both programs can read and write PSD.
What to verify on a complex file
- Layers that use unusual or critical blend modes.
- Clipped or grouped layer relationships.
- Layer masks and areas whose appearance depends on a mask.
- Hidden and visible alternate artwork.
- Transparent edges, soft shadows, and other details that reveal compositing changes.
- Any effect that was essential to the original design but was not represented as ordinary painted pixels.
If a receiving editor reports a difference, compare the exported PSD with the XCF and the original PSD. This three-way comparison helps identify whether the change occurred during import, during your edit, or during export and re-opening.

The PSD does not open
Confirm that you used File → Open… and selected the intended file rather than an similarly named copy. Try opening the original again without first replacing it. If the file still cannot be opened, the issue may be a PSD feature or detail that GIMP cannot interpret; the documentation does not promise complete coverage of the PSD specification. In that situation, obtain a version saved by the source application with simpler layer behavior or request a flattened reference for visual checking.

The file opens, but the image looks different
Stop before editing and identify the difference. Check layer order, visibility, transparency, masks, and important effects. Then inspect blend-dependent areas at a closer zoom. GIMP’s documented limitation is that some features may be missing or look different, so an altered appearance is a compatibility issue to diagnose rather than an indication that your edit caused the problem.
Best Value
Layers appear, but a blend effect is wrong
Record which layer mode or compositing relationship produces the discrepancy. GIMP cautions that some modes do not map exactly to Photoshop. For a deliverable that must match the source, consider simplifying the affected effect into ordinary pixels in a copy of the artwork, or have the final compositing performed in the application used by the recipient. Keep the layered XCF so you can revise the edit without destroying your working structure.
The exported PSD looks right in GIMP but wrong elsewhere
Reopen the exported PSD in the destination application and compare it with the XCF, not just with the view you had before export. Pay special attention to blending modes, clipped layers, masks, and transparency. If the destination cannot reproduce a critical effect, deliver the format that workflow actually supports, such as a flattened image when editable layers are not required, while retaining the XCF for future changes.
You saved over the wrong file
For future work, maintain separate names and locations for the incoming PSD, the XCF project, and exported deliverables. GIMP’s Save-versus-Export distinction is designed to prevent this confusion: Save is for the native XCF project, while Export creates a different file format.

- Preserve the source: keep the original PSD unchanged.
- Open: use File → Open… in GIMP.
- Inspect: review layers, visibility, transparency, masks, effects, and blend-dependent regions.
- Create a working project: save an
.xcfcopy before substantial edits. - Edit: make changes in the XCF and check the canvas after major operations.
- Export only when needed: choose File → Export As… and select Photoshop image or use a
.psdextension. - Validate the hand-off: open the exported file in the destination application and compare its appearance and layer behavior with the XCF.
- Choose a fallback deliberately: if editable PSD compatibility is inadequate and the recipient only needs final pixels, export the format that recipient specifies and retain the XCF as the editable master.
Pre-delivery checklist
- The original PSD is still available and has not been overwritten.
- The latest edits are saved in an XCF project.
- The exported file has the requested
.psdextension or was identified as a Photoshop image. - Layer order, visibility, transparency, and masks have been checked.
- Important effects and blend modes have been examined at a useful zoom.
- The exported PSD has been opened in the application that will receive it.
- Any visual difference has been reported or corrected before delivery.
- If the recipient does not need layers, the final flattened format follows that recipient’s requirements while the XCF remains available for revisions.
Bottom line
To open a PSD in GIMP, choose File → Open…. You can edit the imported image, but first inspect its layers and effects because PSD support is not perfectly symmetrical with Photoshop. Save your editable work as XCF, then choose File → Export As… and select Photoshop image or a .psd extension when you need a PSD deliverable. Because blending modes and other features may not translate exactly, always verify the exported file in the destination application.
