Yes—but the method depends on the format. Affinity can import PSD and AI files directly for editing. An INDD file is different: Affinity’s documented workflow starts with an IDML file exported from InDesign, not the original INDD project. Affinity can import that IDML, but it cannot export an editable INDD or IDML file.
Use a duplicate of every source file, check the imported document against the original, and keep an Adobe-compatible handoff in mind before you begin. The current official compatibility information establishes import support, not lossless conversion for every feature.

Which files can you open directly?
The quickest way to choose a workflow is to identify the extension and decide whether you need an editable project or only a finished page for viewing or printing.

Adobe’s current InDesign format reference separates three operations: opening a project, exporting a project and placing an asset. INDD and IDML are listed in the InDesign workflow, while PSD and AI appear as assets that can be placed. Placing a PSD or AI into a layout is therefore not the same as opening that file as an independently editable project.

What you need before starting
- Affinity installed: Use the current Affinity application that matches the job—vector editing for artwork, pixel editing for raster work, or page layout for documents. The product site describes these tool areas together.
- A free Canva account: Affinity’s page-layout FAQ says its vector, design and pixel tools are available with a free Canva account.
- The original file and its assets: Keep the source untouched. Make a working duplicate before importing.
- Fonts and linked files: Gather the fonts and externally linked graphics used by the original document. Import support does not guarantee that a missing font or unavailable link will be reproduced automatically.
- A delivery requirement: Ask whether the recipient needs an editable Adobe-native project, an Affinity file, a PDF or another export. That answer determines whether Affinity alone is sufficient.
Integrated Canva AI tools are a separate matter. The FAQ says those tools require a premium Canva plan, but it does not say a paid plan is required to import PSD, AI or IDML files. Do not buy a premium plan solely on the assumption that file import needs it.
How to open and edit a PSD file
1. Make a safe copy
Duplicate the PSD and work on the copy. Keep the original in its original location and preserve its filename, because it is your reference if conversion changes a layer, font, effect or link.
2. Import the copy into Affinity
- Open the appropriate Affinity application.
- Use the application’s File → Open command and select the copied PSD.
- Allow the import to complete before making edits. For a large document, wait for all layers and previews to appear.
The current Affinity compatibility page lists PSD as an import type. That establishes that the file can be brought into Affinity; it does not promise that every Photoshop-only feature will behave identically.

3. Audit the imported document before editing
- Layers and groups: Expand the layer hierarchy and compare names, order, visibility and masks with the original.
- Text: Check every headline, caption and paragraph for substitutions, changed line breaks, missing glyphs and altered spacing.
- Effects: Zoom into shadows, glows, blend effects and other treatments. A visual difference may not be obvious at normal zoom.
- Fonts: Record any missing or substituted font before changing copy. Replacing a font can change pagination and alignment.
- Links and embedded material: Confirm that placed images and other linked content are present and point to the intended files.
- Canvas and color appearance: Compare the document dimensions and representative colors with the original export or a reference render.
4. Save an editable working copy
After the audit, save the document in Affinity’s native format. This preserves your ongoing edits in the application’s own structure instead of repeatedly reopening the PSD. Keep the imported PSD alongside it as a reference, not as the only working file.

5. Export for the recipient
Export only after checking the intended output size, resolution, transparency and color settings. If the recipient needs an editable Photoshop document with the original feature behavior, confirm that requirement before promising a PSD handoff; the cited compatibility information does not establish complete round-trip parity.
How to open and edit an AI file
Import the artwork
- Copy the AI file so the original remains unchanged.
- Open Affinity and choose File → Open.
- Select the AI copy and wait for the document to finish importing.
AI is listed as a supported Affinity import. Treat that as a starting point for editing, not a guarantee that every Illustrator-specific feature, linked workflow or effect will transfer unchanged.
Check vector structure and appearance
- Inspect the layer and object hierarchy, including hidden items and clipping or masking relationships.
- Review every text object for font substitution, altered wrapping and missing characters.
- Zoom in on strokes, gradients, transparencies, live effects and small details that can change during conversion.
- Verify placed or linked graphics and replace missing files with the correct originals.
- Compare artboard boundaries and the position of objects that extend beyond the visible page.
Make a deliberate decision about effects that look different. Rebuilding an effect in Affinity may be faster than trying to preserve an imported appearance that no longer matches the source, but record the change if another designer will compare the files.

Save a native Affinity working copy before extensive edits. Export the final artwork in the format specified by the recipient, and inspect the exported file—not just the editable canvas—before delivery. If a client requires an Illustrator-native file with editable behavior, establish that requirement at the start because the cited pages do not promise complete AI round-trip compatibility.

How to edit an INDD project without keeping Creative Cloud
An INDD file is an InDesign project, not an interchangeable graphics asset. The documented Affinity route is a conversion through IDML while you still have access to InDesign.
1. Export IDML from InDesign
- Open the original INDD project in InDesign.
- Use InDesign’s Export command and choose the IDML format.
- Save the IDML beside, but separately from, the original INDD. Do not overwrite the source project.
Adobe’s format reference lists INDD and IDML in InDesign’s own open/export workflow. Affinity’s FAQ specifically documents importing IDML; it does not say that Affinity opens INDD directly.
2. Open the IDML in Affinity’s page-layout workflow
- Launch Affinity’s page-layout application.
- Open the exported IDML file.
- Save an Affinity-native copy as soon as the conversion is complete.
Affinity says that page structure, text frames and basic styles are preserved through IDML import. Those elements still need inspection because preservation does not mean that every page is production-ready without adjustment.
3. Repair complex layout features
Work through the document page by page and compare it with a PDF or other reference export from InDesign. Affinity identifies GREP styles, anchored objects and tables as features that can require manual adjustment.

- GREP styles: Check paragraphs or characters that were formatted automatically by pattern-based rules. Reapply the intended formatting manually if the rule did not survive.
- Anchored objects: Confirm that inline graphics, callouts and objects attached to text remain anchored to the correct words or paragraphs.
- Tables: Check row heights, cell contents, borders, fills, spanning cells and page breaks. Rebuild or correct any table that shifted.
- Text flow: Look for overset text, changed line endings, altered columns and unexpected page breaks.
- Styles and master-page elements: Compare recurring headers, footers, numbering and basic paragraph or character styles throughout the document.
4. Decide what the final handoff must be
Affinity’s FAQ states that it does not export to INDD or IDML. Therefore, an Affinity-edited document cannot be returned as an editable INDD project using Affinity alone. If an editor, printer or client requires INDD, keep the converted work as a reference and use an InDesign-compatible step for the final native handoff. If the recipient needs only a finished layout, export a PDF instead.

If the goal is viewing, proofing, emailing or printing—not continued layout editing—ask for a PDF export from the original InDesign project. Adobe lists PDF as an InDesign export format. A PDF is a fixed-output representation: it preserves the intended appearance more directly than a layout conversion, but it is not a replacement for an editable INDD project.
- Choose PDF when the recipient only needs to read, print or approve the pages.
- Choose IDML conversion when the recipient needs to continue editing the layout outside InDesign.
- Choose the original INDD workflow when an Adobe-native editable handoff is mandatory.
Fidelity checks that prevent expensive surprises
Import success is not the same as production readiness. Use a repeatable comparison before you commit to a delivery.

- Render a reference: Export or print the original document, where possible, so you have a visual baseline.
- Compare dimensions: Check page size, canvas size, bleed, margins and orientation.
- Review typography: Verify fonts, weights, line breaks, tracking, leading, paragraph spacing and glyphs.
- Inspect imagery: Check resolution, crops, transparency, color appearance and every linked file.
- Check structure: Review layers, groups, masks, styles, page numbering, headers and recurring elements.
- Examine edge cases: Zoom into small type, thin strokes, shadows, transparency and objects near page edges.
- Test the exported file: Open the final PDF or image in a separate viewer and inspect representative pages at normal and high zoom.
- Record manual repairs: Keep a short change log so another editor knows what was rebuilt rather than imported unchanged.
Common problems and the correct response
The INDD file will not open
This is expected under the documented Affinity workflow. Ask the InDesign user to export IDML, then import that IDML into Affinity. Do not rename the INDD extension or assume that doing so converts the project.
The imported file looks different
Stop editing and compare the source and import systematically. Check fonts, effects, linked graphics, masks, text flow and document dimensions first. Restore the source or rebuild the affected element rather than silently delivering a changed design.
Text moved or overflowed
Look for missing fonts, altered metrics, changed frame sizes and style conversions. Correct the cause, then review every subsequent page because one text change can alter pagination.
A table or anchored object is broken after IDML import
Affinity specifically warns that tables and anchored objects may need adjustment. Rebuild the affected structure in the page-layout document and compare it with an InDesign reference export.
The recipient asks for INDD after you finish
Affinity cannot export INDD or IDML according to its FAQ. Tell the recipient that the Affinity file or PDF is available, and use an InDesign-compatible workflow if an editable INDD handoff is non-negotiable.
You only need to send a proof
Export a PDF from the source layout when possible. A fixed PDF avoids introducing an unnecessary editable-file conversion.

What the current documentation actually guarantees
As of the Affinity pages accessed October 11, 2026, PSD and AI are listed as imports, and the page-layout FAQ documents IDML import with stated caveats for advanced layout features. The same FAQ says the core vector, design and pixel tools are available with a free Canva account and that Affinity does not export to INDD or IDML. Adobe’s InDesign format reference, updated August 7, 2026, distinguishes opening and exporting InDesign projects from placing PSD and AI assets.
Those sources establish software-level format support. They do not establish a lossless conversion guarantee, a complete list of unsupported Photoshop or Illustrator features, or hands-on results for a particular file. The safest professional practice is therefore to preserve the source, inspect every imported document and agree on the final file type before work begins.
