Yes. You can open and edit common Word, Excel and PowerPoint files without Microsoft Office by using LibreOffice or ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors. Both document support for DOCX, XLSX and PPTX, but they are not identical choices: LibreOffice is a local open-source suite with a documented batch-conversion tool, while ONLYOFFICE combines local desktop editing with optional cloud, server and AI-provider connections.
Choose based on where files may be stored, whether several people must work together, how complex the files are, and whether AI requests should use a local model or an online provider. Opening a file successfully is only the first check; verify layout, formulas, embedded objects and macros on the actual documents you depend on.

The practical choice in one view
For ordinary local editing, install LibreOffice or ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors and open the file in the application that matches its content: Writer for word-processing documents, Calc for spreadsheets, or Impress for presentations. LibreOffice officially lists support for Microsoft Word .doc and .docx, Excel .xls and .xlsx, and PowerPoint .ppt and .pptx. ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors states that it can create, view and edit DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and other common formats.
The difference becomes important when you need AI or teamwork. ONLYOFFICE documents an AI Agent and a plugin manager for connecting an AI provider, and its Docs deployment guidance describes both online providers and local models such as LocalAI, LM Studio and Ollama. LibreOffice’s documented features in this context are office editing and conversion; do not assume that an AI assistant is built in or active by default.

LibreOffice: the local, conversion-friendly route
What it opens
LibreOffice maps the familiar Microsoft applications to its own components: Writer opens word-processing files, Calc opens spreadsheets, and Impress opens presentations. Its compatibility list includes the older binary formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt) as well as the newer Office Open XML formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx).
Use File → Open in the relevant component, or open the file from your operating system and select LibreOffice when prompted. If you edit a file and need to send it back to a Microsoft Office user, use Save As and retain the original extension when that is the recipient’s requirement. Saving a working copy in OpenDocument format is safer when you control the workflow, because it avoids repeatedly translating the same file between formats.
Batch conversion with the Document Converter Wizard
LibreOffice’s Document Converter Wizard is useful when a folder contains many Microsoft Office files that you want in OpenDocument formats. It is a conversion workflow, not a promise that every feature has an equivalent representation.

- Open LibreOffice’s Document Converter Wizard from the suite’s Wizards area.
- Select the Microsoft Office file types and the folder or files to process.
- Choose the OpenDocument output type that matches each application: text documents for Writer, spreadsheets for Calc, and presentations for Impress.
- Choose a separate destination folder so the source files remain untouched.
- Run the conversion, then open representative outputs and compare them with their originals.
- Only replace or archive the originals after checking pages, formulas, charts, links, embedded objects and print output.
The LibreOffice help guidance specifically focuses on changing normal content such as text, cells and graphics and advises against editing macros in the described conversion workflow. Treat macro code as a separate migration project; conversion does not guarantee that it will be preserved or executable.
When LibreOffice is a good fit
- You want a free, open-source desktop suite and files can remain on your computer.
- Your work is mainly text, tables, calculations, charts and standard presentations.
- You need a documented way to process many files in one folder.
- You prefer to work in OpenDocument formats and export Microsoft-compatible copies when necessary.
ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors: Microsoft-oriented files with optional AI
Desktop editing without a constant connection
ONLYOFFICE describes Desktop Editors as open source under the AGPL v.3 license. The desktop applications can create, view and edit DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and other common formats. Its getting-started documentation describes working with files on a computer without a constant internet connection, while also allowing optional connections to its cloud, server or third-party storage.

That makes it a useful starting point when your team exchanges Microsoft-format files frequently but you do not want every edit to depend on a browser session. Before adopting it for a business template, inspect the actual document in the desktop editor and in the recipient’s Office application; the format label alone cannot establish identical rendering.
AI Agent and plugin integration
The AI capability described for ONLYOFFICE is an integration rather than a blanket guarantee of a built-in, free or private assistant. The getting-started material identifies an AI Agent tab and a Plugin Manager. The AI plugin guide describes connecting an AI provider for tasks including:

A typical setup sequence is:
- Open the document in ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors.
- Open the AI Agent tab and inspect the available tools.
- Use the Plugin Manager to install or enable the AI plugin if it is not already present.
- Configure the provider credentials or endpoint requested by the plugin.
- Run a harmless test on a copy of the document, such as asking for a short summary.
- Check the provider, account and retention terms before sending work material.
- Review every generated change manually, especially formulas, legal wording, figures and macro code.
The documentation does not establish that every provider is included, free, private or enabled by default. The provider you select determines where prompts and document excerpts are processed.
Local models, online providers and hosted Docs
Local-model route
ONLYOFFICE Docs guidance lists LocalAI, LM Studio and Ollama among local-model options. In this arrangement, the model service runs in an environment you control and the office deployment is configured to call it. “Local” describes the model endpoint, not an automatic guarantee: telemetry, logging, backups, network policies and the office server still need review.
Before using confidential material, confirm the endpoint address, authentication, logging behavior, model storage and whether the office deployment can fall back to an online provider. Test with a non-sensitive document first and monitor the network path according to your organization’s policy.

Online-provider route
An online provider can be simpler to enable and may offer models that are impractical to run locally. It also means prompts or selected document content may leave your computer or server. Check the provider’s current terms, data-retention settings, region, account controls and breach-notification commitments yourself; these details can change independently of the office editor.

Browser and server deployment
ONLYOFFICE Docs documents browser-based editing and collaboration. A hosted service removes some installation work, while a self-managed server gives your organization more control over storage and network boundaries but adds administration, upgrades, backups and access-control responsibilities. The available AI providers and plugin behavior can differ by deployment, so confirm them for the exact Docs edition and configuration you will use.

A safe workflow for opening and editing a Microsoft file
1. Preserve the source
Copy the incoming DOCX, XLSX or PPTX to a working folder and keep the original read-only or archived. If the file arrived as an attachment, retain the original attachment as well as any extracted copy.
2. Identify the file’s risk and complexity
Note whether it contains tracked changes, comments, custom fonts, charts, pivot tables, external links, embedded files, forms, macros or a highly designed slide layout. The more of these features it uses, the more important a visual and functional comparison becomes.
3. Open it in the matching component
Use Writer, Calc or Impress in LibreOffice, or the corresponding document, spreadsheet or presentation editor in ONLYOFFICE. If the application warns about unsupported features, record the warning and continue only on the working copy.

4. Check structure before editing
- In a document, inspect headings, table of contents, page breaks, headers, footers, fields and comments.
- In a spreadsheet, inspect formulas, named ranges, filters, charts, hidden sheets, data validation and external references.
- In a presentation, inspect slide masters, fonts, transitions, videos, speaker notes and object alignment.
5. Make a small controlled edit
Change one paragraph, one cell formula or one slide object, save a new copy, close the application and reopen that copy. This catches problems that are not visible during the first session.
6. Save in the required format
Keep an editable working copy in the format that best preserves your workflow. Export or save a Microsoft-compatible copy when another person or system requires DOCX, XLSX or PPTX. Use a clear filename that identifies the editor and revision, rather than overwriting the source.
7. Verify in the destination environment
Open the delivered copy in the application that will be used for approval, printing, presentation or further calculation. Compare representative pages, formula results and slide views; do not rely solely on the fact that the file reopened successfully.

Format support means the application recognizes the file type and can attempt to interpret it. It does not prove that every layout rule, formula, object, font metric, add-in or macro behaves identically. A document can open while a table of contents shifts, a chart changes size, a formula recalculates differently or an embedded object becomes unavailable.

The Document Foundation’s LibreOffice 26.8.1 release update, published October 2, 2026, lists compatibility work involving hyperlinks in DOCX tables of contents; text alignment and line spacing; drawing objects and database ranges in XLSX; and a PPTX problem that previously caused Impress to close while opening. These fixes are useful evidence that compatibility improves over time but remains a moving target, not a universal fidelity guarantee.
Build a file-specific acceptance test
- Documents: compare page count, headings, table of contents links, line spacing, tables, images, fields, tracked changes and printed output.
- Spreadsheets: compare key formula results, date and currency formats, named ranges, charts, filters, data validation and refresh behavior.
- Presentations: compare every slide in slideshow mode, including fonts, object positions, media, transitions and notes.
- Automation: run required macros or scripts only after checking them separately and keeping a tested original.
If the file is business-critical, make the acceptance test part of the handoff process and retain the editor version used to produce the approved copy.
Common problems and practical fixes
The file opens but the layout changed
Work from the original, install or substitute the intended fonts where licensing permits, and inspect paragraph spacing, page breaks, tables and anchored objects. Save to the format required by the recipient only after the visual comparison is complete. For a repeatedly used template, test a representative sample before migrating the whole library.
Formulas, charts or ranges look different
Check the formula results rather than only the displayed values. Recalculate the workbook, inspect named ranges and verify chart source ranges. If the spreadsheet depends on external links or add-ins, test those dependencies in the destination environment; a compatible file extension cannot provide missing services.
A macro no longer works
Do not edit or convert the only copy. LibreOffice’s conversion guidance cautions against editing macros in that workflow, and neither suite’s format support should be treated as a macro-preservation guarantee. Keep the original, document the macro’s purpose and test code in an isolated copy before deciding whether it needs rewriting.
The AI plugin is missing or inactive
Check that you are using a deployment that exposes the AI Agent and Plugin Manager, install or enable the plugin, and confirm that a provider endpoint and credentials are configured. If the organization blocks outbound connections, a local-model endpoint may be required. If the provider is unavailable, continue editing without AI rather than pasting sensitive content into an unapproved service.
Collaboration is required but desktop files conflict
Move to a browser or server deployment only after deciding who will host the files and manage permissions. Establish a naming, versioning and backup policy, then test simultaneous editing with a non-critical document. Hosted collaboration changes the storage and access model; it is not simply a different “Open” button.

There is no documented universal compatibility winner in these materials. Choose the application that fits the files and operating model you can test, then validate the templates that matter before making a broad switch.

- Inventory the DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT and PPTX files you actually use.
- Classify them as simple, feature-rich or macro-dependent.
- Keep untouched originals and create a small test set.
- Open the test set in LibreOffice and ONLYOFFICE if both are candidates.
- Record layout, formula, object and macro differences.
- Decide whether files stay on desktops or move to a hosted or self-managed Docs deployment.
- If AI is needed, select a local or online provider based on your data policy and verify its current terms.
- Configure the AI integration on copies, then test generated output for factual and technical errors.
- Document the approved save format, review steps and backup location for everyone who edits the files.
- Convert or migrate the wider library only after the test set passes.
What to check before relying on an AI-assisted edit
- Confirm which text, cells or slides are being sent to the model.
- Check whether the provider is local, hosted by your organization or online.
- Remove confidential or regulated content unless the approved configuration permits it.
- Review generated prose for invented facts, changed meaning and unsuitable tone.
- Recalculate and inspect generated spreadsheet formulas.
- Read generated macro code before running it.
- Keep a versioned copy so every AI-assisted change can be reversed.
These controls matter even when the office editor itself is open source: the AI provider, endpoint, deployment and logging configuration determine how an AI request is handled.
