The most reliable approach is to decide what stays exclusive for each asset, select an access model that matches your business goal, and test the effect on referral traffic, reader satisfaction, subscriptions and total revenue.
There is no universally correct summary length or paywall setting. Daily-news guidance from Google suggests experimenting with sampling, while studies of paywall changes show that audience demand and revenue can move in opposite directions. Treat the summary as an editorial product, not merely a truncated article.

What an ungated summary should accomplish
An ungated summary is a freely accessible orientation to work that has a paid or otherwise restricted full version. It answers the reader’s immediate questions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- What is this work about?
- Why is the subject important now?
- Who or what does it affect?
- What will a subscriber or registered reader gain from opening the full version?
The open portion should be useful on its own. A reader who does not subscribe should still leave with accurate context, not a blank teaser. At the same time, the summary should stop before it gives away the work’s distinctive value: original interviews, source documents, detailed methodology, exclusive data, complete analysis, investigative findings or the full set of recommendations.

That boundary is editorial, not a fixed word count. A 150-word orientation may be enough for a short analysis; a complex investigation may need several paragraphs to establish its stakes. The right stopping point depends on what makes the complete work worth paying for.
Decide what to gate for each asset
Forrester’s gating framework recommends evaluating four questions for every asset: its objective, target audience, value and uniqueness. Use those questions before choosing a meter or writing a summary.
| Question | What to determine | Editorial implication |
|---|---|---|
| Objective | Is the piece intended to acquire subscribers, build trust, generate leads, support a membership appeal or serve existing customers? | A subscription-acquisition piece may need a stronger demonstration of expertise than a newsletter-registration page. |
| Target audience | Is the likely reader a search visitor, a regular member, a professional buyer or an existing subscriber? | New visitors need more context; known readers may need less orientation and a clearer path to the full work. |
| Value | What practical or emotional benefit does the complete version provide? | Keep the benefit visible in the summary, while reserving the detailed execution for the premium section. |
| Uniqueness | Which material cannot be easily found elsewhere? | Protect the exclusive reporting, evidence, data, interviews and analysis that create the strongest reason to subscribe. |
Make an inventory before publication. Label each section as open orientation, supporting context, premium evidence, premium analysis or premium action. This prevents a common mistake: leaving the headline and first paragraph open, then accidentally revealing the decisive finding in the next paragraph.
Keep the premium value specific
Do not describe the full version only as “more detail.” Name what remains inside: the documents examined, the people interviewed, the data set, the methodology, the competing explanations or the step-by-step implications. Specificity helps an open reader make an informed decision without exposing the material itself.
Choose an access model
Lead-ins, meters and selected premium sections are different controls. They can be used alone or combined.
| Model | How it works | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open lead-in | A fixed introduction remains free; the rest asks the reader to subscribe or register. | High-value individual pieces where a clear explanation of the stakes can persuade a reader. | Every visitor encounters the same stopping point, regardless of prior reading. |
| Meter | Readers can open a quota of articles before a paywall appears. | Publications that want broad sampling and a predictable conversion path. | A low quota can reduce discovery; a high quota can reduce urgency. |
| Selected premium sections | Some articles or sections are restricted while others remain fully open. | Mixed catalogs with clear differences in exclusivity or audience value. | Readers may find access rules inconsistent unless labels and explanations are clear. |
| Hybrid | A useful lead-in is combined with a meter, registration requirement or premium sections. | Publishers balancing search reach, habitual use and paid conversion. | More rules create more opportunities for confusing user experience or measurement errors. |
Google’s reader-revenue guidance treats these as separate levers rather than one universal paywall formula. Select the model asset by asset, then document who can see each section and under what condition.
How much should an ungated summary reveal?
No source establishes an ideal length for a separately written ungated summary. Google Search Central states that “there is no single value for optimal sampling across different businesses” and recommends experiments that measure referral traffic and conversion.

The same guidance reports that general user satisfaction begins to degrade significantly when a paywall is shown more than 10% of the time, generally meaning about 3% of the audience has encountered it. Preserve the qualification: this is Google’s analysis and framing, not a guaranteed threshold for every audience.
Use a five-part summary structure
- Subject: State what the work examines in plain language.
- Stakes: Explain who is affected and why the issue matters.
- Established context: Give enough background for a first-time reader to follow the subject.
- Distinctive promise: Identify the original reporting, evidence or analysis in the full version without disclosing its decisive details.
- Next step: Ask the reader to subscribe, register, join a newsletter, contribute or open another free item, depending on the publication’s goal.
Stop before the summary delivers the central proof, the complete explanation or the actionable sequence that the premium work is selling. A useful test is to remove the paywall mentally: if the summary lets a reader accurately answer the full article’s “how,” “who,” “why” and “what happens next,” it is probably too revealing.
Do not assume a longer teaser always converts better
A 2025 study of news contexts found that displaying a standfirst or introductory sentences was associated with lower odds of clicking a subscribe button. The finding is an association in the studied settings, not evidence that all summaries should be removed. It does show why teaser length and placement belong in testing rather than intuition.
Build the summary and access rule step by step
1. Map the article’s value before writing
List the exclusive elements in the full work: interviews, records, data, methods, narrative scenes, analysis and recommendations. Mark which elements establish credibility and which ones create the strongest subscription incentive. Keep the first group available as context only when doing so does not reveal the second group.
2. Write the open orientation independently
Draft the summary as a complete explanation, not as the first paragraphs copied from the premium article. Use a direct subject sentence, a stakes sentence and one or two pieces of verified context. Avoid suspense language that promises a revelation without telling readers what they are evaluating.
3. Define the stopping point
Insert the access boundary immediately before the premium work’s distinctive evidence or analysis. The boundary should be meaningful: “The full report compares the original records with current filings” is more informative than “Continue reading for more.”
4. Label access clearly
Tell readers whether the next action requires a subscription, free registration, a contribution or another entitlement. Use the same language in the button, paywall message and account flow. Do not imply that registration is free if payment is required later in the process.

5. Add a goal-matched call to action
Google Publisher Help lists subscription, registration, newsletter, contribution and further reading as possible calls to action. Choose one primary action for each page. A subscription page should not compete with three equally prominent buttons asking for unrelated actions.

6. Check the open experience
- Open the page in a signed-out browser and on a mobile connection.
- Confirm that the summary makes sense without the premium paragraphs.
- Verify that the paywall explains what access includes and how to obtain it.
- Check that keyboard users and screen readers can identify the boundary and action.
- Confirm that returning subscribers see the entitled content without a loop.
Set up a meter and test it responsibly
A meter changes more than the number of articles a reader can open. It changes the number of search visits, internal recommendations, advertising opportunities and chances to encounter a subscription offer. Define the experiment before changing the allowance.
Choose the test variables
- Monthly article allowance.
- Whether the paywall appears after the summary or at a fixed article position.
- Whether search visitors, social visitors and direct visitors receive the same rule.
- Whether registered users receive a different allowance from anonymous users.
- Whether the call to action asks for payment, registration or a contribution.
Google says publishers should experiment with different sampling values and observe their effects on referral traffic and conversion. Record the exposure rule precisely so a result can be reproduced.
Measure the whole funnel
| Metric | What it reveals |
|---|---|
| Referral traffic | Whether search and external links still bring readers to open summaries. |
| Summary engagement | Whether visitors reach the access boundary and interact with the explanation. |
| Subscription initiation | Whether readers begin the purchase or registration flow. |
| Subscription completion | Whether initiated users finish, rather than abandoning at payment or account creation. |
| Reader satisfaction | Whether the rule creates complaints, short sessions or declining return visits. |
| Total revenue | The combined effect of subscription, contribution and advertising income. |
Do not judge a rule by starts alone. A setting that increases subscription clicks but sharply reduces completion, referrals or advertising may not improve the business.

A quasi-experiment analyzed by Aral and Dhillon in Management Science, published online in 2020, examined paywall policy changes at The New York Times. In that setting, total content demand fell about 9.9%, total subscriptions rose 31% over seven months and net positive revenue exceeded $230,000 because subscription gains more than offset lower advertising revenue. Those are effects of the studied policy and period, not a forecast for another publisher.
Google’s Reader Revenue playbook also reports a contribution-model test involving more than 200 North American publishers. It says the test raised about US$1.6 million, with roughly 70% of contributions coming from existing subscribers. The figures describe that Local Media Association test and should not be treated as expected fundraising for an individual site.
Make restricted content understandable to search engines
If a page is intended to appear in search while some sections require access, implement Google’s documented paywall structured-data approach. The purpose is to distinguish legitimately restricted material from cloaking.
Match selectors to the actual page
Mark each restricted section with the class selectors required by Google’s current documentation, and ensure those selectors identify exactly the same elements that visitors see as restricted. A selector that points to the wrong container can cause search engines to misread the page.
Keep sections separate
Google’s guidance says not to nest restricted content sections. Use separate, accurately marked sections rather than placing one restricted container inside another. Validate the rendered page after template changes.

Do not send hidden premium text to the browser unintentionally
If the publisher does not want restricted content accessible at serve time, do not deliver that content to the browser and merely hide it with styling or script. Server-side entitlement checks should determine what is sent. This is both a content-protection requirement and a way to avoid exposing premium text through view-source, scripts or cached responses.
Keep the summary honest
Structured data cannot compensate for a misleading teaser. The visible summary, paywall message and marked restricted section should describe the same access state. Do not show search engines a different article than the one delivered to readers.

The summary gives away the conclusion
Symptom: Readers can understand the decisive finding without opening the full version.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix: Keep the question, stakes and method open, but reserve the complete evidence chain and implications for the premium section.
The summary is too vague to earn trust
Symptom: The page says only that an article contains “exclusive insights.”
Fix: Name the subject, affected group, reporting method or document type. Explain what the full version adds without reproducing it.
The meter is copied from another publisher
Symptom: A quota is introduced without measuring audience behavior or business effects.
Fix: Treat Google’s 6-to-10-article daily-news range and 10-article starting point as experimental inputs, not universal settings. Test against your own referral, satisfaction and revenue data.
Best Value
The paywall appears before readers understand the offer
Symptom: A visitor sees a payment request with no explanation of what remains exclusive.
Fix: Put a concise value statement beside the action and state whether the next step is subscription, registration or contribution.
Search implementation exposes or mislabels premium material
Symptom: Restricted sections are nested, selectors do not match the template or hidden text is still delivered to unauthenticated browsers.

A practical publication checklist
- The summary states the subject and stakes without revealing the premium conclusion.
- The full version’s distinctive reporting, evidence or analysis is named accurately.
- The access model is documented for anonymous users, registered users and subscribers.
- The call to action matches the intended business outcome.
- The meter, if used, has an explicit allowance and experiment plan.
- Referral traffic, engagement, starts, completions, satisfaction and total revenue are tracked.
- Restricted sections use the current structured-data guidance and non-nested selectors.
- Unauthenticated responses do not deliver premium text that the publisher intends to restrict.
- Mobile, keyboard and screen-reader users can understand the boundary and action.
- Editors have checked that the open summary remains accurate after updates to the premium article.
FAQ
Should every premium article have an ungated summary?
No. Decide asset by asset. A piece whose value depends almost entirely on a confidential database or a tightly controlled tool may need a shorter orientation, while a complex investigation may require substantial context to be understood. Apply the objective, audience, value and uniqueness test before selecting the access rule.
Is a 10-article monthly meter the recommended setting for all publishers?
No. Google frames 6 to 10 articles as a range many daily-news publishers may find appropriate and 10 articles as a starting point for experiments with Google Search users. Other publication types should establish their own baseline and test it.
Can a summary be indexed if the rest of the article is restricted?
Yes, provided the page accurately represents the restricted sections and follows Google’s paywall structured-data guidance. The visible summary must match what an unauthenticated visitor can actually access.
Should the summary reveal the main finding to demonstrate value?
Usually, reveal the subject, stakes and reporting approach rather than the complete finding or evidence chain. The full version should retain a meaningful reason to open it. Test this boundary because the 2025 teaser-behavior study found that introductory text was associated with lower subscription-button clicks in its studied contexts.
