You usually should not convert every video to 30 fps. For individual YouTube uploads, preserve the frame rate at which each video was recorded. For one continuous always-on stream, use the encoder’s single configured output frame rate and conform clips only where the playout pipeline needs a shared cadence. Test representative footage before switching the full library.
When to preserve frame rates—and when to normalize
YouTube’s upload guidance recommends encoding and uploading content at the frame rate at which it was recorded. Common upload rates include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 and 60 fps; other rates, including 23.98, 29.97 and 59.94, are also accepted. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings and upload troubleshooting guidance.

That recommendation applies to uploads, not necessarily to a continuous playout chain. A live encoder sends one configured output cadence. If clips with different rates are joined in that chain, the playback or encoding pipeline has to handle the differences. YouTube recommends automatic detection of live resolution and frame rate by default; manual resolution selection requires a custom stream key. There is no universal house rate that suits every channel. Choose one only when your continuous output needs it, based on the dominant footage, motion, and encoder constraints. Details are in YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
Inventory your video library first
Before batch processing, identify each asset’s actual frame rate and whether it is progressive, interlaced, or variable-rate. Distinguish close-but-not-identical rates such as 24 and 23.976, or 30 and 29.97; a label rounded to an integer can hide a meaningful timing difference.

YouTube does not prescribe a particular inventory utility or one target rate. Treat this as a production check, not a platform requirement.
Choose a house rate for the continuous output
Base the output cadence on the footage that dominates the channel and the kind of motion viewers will see. If most material is 25 fps, converting all of it to 30 fps does not create additional captured motion; it may instead introduce repeated frames or uneven cadence. If your library mixes rates, make a short test playlist and compare it at the intended output rate before converting everything.

Separately uploaded videos and clips assembled into a single continuous live output are different cases. For uploads, retain the recorded rate when practical. For a continuous output that requires a common cadence, conform assets in the playout path as needed and verify the result. YouTube Live supports encoder output up to 60 fps; YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These live settings do not mean that every source file should be converted to 60 fps. Check the current YouTube encoder recommendations for the relevant resolution and SDR or HDR bitrate guidance rather than treating any bitrate as universal.

A constant-frame-rate conversion changes the frame sequence, not just the metadata. FFmpeg’s fps filter converts to a specified constant rate by duplicating or dropping frames as needed.

- Dropping frames: reduces temporal sampling and can make motion look less smooth.
- Duplicating frames: can produce judder or brief holds, especially when the source cadence does not divide evenly into the target cadence.
- Interpolating frames: creates synthetic in-between motion. It can show artifacts around occlusions, fast movement, or scene cuts; results depend on the footage and settings.
FFmpeg’s separate framerate filter interpolates output frames from source frames. Its documentation says it is not designed to work correctly on interlaced media, so deinterlace first. Conversion should preserve intended duration and audio synchronization; changing timestamps or merely retagging a file is not equivalent to resampling frames. No conversion method guarantees clean results for every clip, so inspect the actual output.
Deinterlace interlaced footage before upload
YouTube instructs creators to deinterlace interlaced video before uploading. Its example converts 1080i60 to 1080p30. Interlaced fields are not the same thing as progressive frames: do not relabel 60 fields per second as 60 progressive frames per second. Follow YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations and check deinterlaced motion for artifacts before using an archive clip in a continuous stream.

Test the playlist and live output
Before a live run, build a short test playlist using the actual edge cases in your library: the lowest and highest rates, camera pans or sports/game motion, titles, quick scene cuts, and interlaced footage if you have it. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
- Play the test playlist through the intended playout and encoder path.
- Check for repeated, dropped, or visibly interpolated frames during motion and at cuts.
- Confirm clip durations remain correct and audio stays synchronized at joins.
- Confirm the encoder reports the expected output frame rate and monitor YouTube’s live stream health.
For a continuous operation, converting files before they enter the always-on playout path can make output behavior easier to manage where a shared cadence is required. YouTube does not prescribe a particular playout architecture; choose an approach you can validate and maintain.

Quick Recap
Troubleshooting frame-rate problems
- Motion looks juddery after conversion: compare the original and converted clip. Duplicated or dropped frames may be visible; reconsider the target cadence or keep the source rate if a shared output rate is not necessary.
- Interpolated motion has distortions: inspect fast movement, occlusions, and cuts. Interpolation creates synthetic frames and can produce artifacts; try a different conversion approach or preserve the native rate.
- Audio drifts or clips change duration: check that conversion preserves timestamps, intended duration, and audio synchronization. A metadata-only rate change is not a substitute for frame resampling.
- Interlaced footage looks combed or wrong: deinterlace before upload or interpolation, then review the progressive output. YouTube’s example is 1080i60 to 1080p30.
- The live output cadence differs from the plan: check the encoder’s selected output settings and the reported stream rate. YouTube recommends automatic detection by default; manual resolution selection requires a custom stream key.
- The stream reports health warnings: test with representative motion and audio before the event, then monitor YouTube stream health and its messages while live.
