Short answer: Samsung’s current U.S. instructions document a shared Group name control in Google Messages, not in Samsung Messages. In Google Messages, open the group, tap its name at the top, choose Group name, type the new name, and tap Save. If you are using Samsung Messages, do not expect a documented group-display-name setting; its Edit categories feature organizes conversations on your phone but does not rename the group for participants.
First, identify which messaging app is open
“Samsung Messages” and “Google Messages” are separate apps, even when both are installed on a Galaxy phone. Their menus are different, so instructions for one app can appear to be missing in the other.

- Google Messages: The Samsung support guide documents a Group name command for an existing group and a name field during group creation.
- Samsung Messages: Samsung’s documented controls cover group creation, recipient management, conversation categories, and troubleshooting. The guide does not document a shared group-display-name control.
To check the app, look at the icon and the app name in your app drawer or in Settings > Apps. Do not rely only on the phone brand: a Galaxy phone may have Google Messages set as its default SMS app.
Rename a group in Google Messages
These are the rename steps Samsung documents for Google Messages:
#1 Best Overall
- PRIVACY DISPLAY: Automatically hide your screen from those beside you. The built-in privacy display can be preset¹ to turn on when receiving notifications, typing passwords, or using specific apps
- TYPE IT IN. TRANSFORM IT FAST: Enhance any shot in seconds on your smartphone by using Photo Assist² with Galaxy AI.³ Add objects, restore details, or apply new styles by simply typing or tapping
- NIGHTS, CAPTURED CLEARLY: From gigs to city lights, record and capture moments after dark with clarity using Nightography so your photos and videos stay crisp and clear on your Samsung Galaxy
- MAKE IT. EDIT IT. SHARE IT: Turn everyday moments into something personal with creative tools built right into your mobile phone, whether it’s a special contact photo, custom wallpaper, an invitation or more⁴
- HELP THAT KEEPS UP: Stay in the moment while Now Nudge with Galaxy AI helps you respond faster and stay organized with smart suggestions⁵ that appear exactly when you need them on your phone
- Open Google Messages.
- Open the group conversation you want to label.
- Tap the current group name at the top of the conversation.
- Tap Group name.
- Enter the new name.
- Tap Save.
If the conversation header shows individual recipients rather than a group name, open the thread first and tap the header itself. The command is attached to the group conversation, not to a contact’s entry in your address book.
Name a group while creating it
Samsung also says a name can be entered while creating a Google Messages group. Start a new message, add the intended recipients, and use the group-name field when it appears before sending. The exact screen layout can vary with the phone, carrier, and software version, but the relevant control is labeled Group name.
A group name is a label for the conversation. It does not change anyone’s saved contact name, phone number, or membership in the thread. To add or remove people, use the recipient-management controls rather than editing the name.

What Samsung Messages does—and does not—provide
Samsung’s current U.S. guide does not provide a step for assigning a shared display name to a group in Samsung Messages. If you open a Samsung Messages thread and cannot find Group name, that is not necessarily an error or a hidden gesture; the documented feature set does not promise that control.

Use categories for your own inbox
Samsung Messages includes Edit categories for organizing conversations. Categories can help you separate family, work, school, or other threads in your inbox, but they are not the same as a group display name. A category is an organizational label in your app; it should not be described as a name that every participant will see.
Use the app’s Edit categories command where it appears in your Samsung Messages menus. Samsung notes that menu locations and available features can vary by device and software version, so the wording may not be identical on every Galaxy phone.
Why group-message behavior affects the answer
Samsung describes group messaging in Samsung Messages as SMS or MMS. The distinction matters when you are diagnosing a group thread:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Message type | Behavior Samsung describes | What it means for naming |
|---|---|---|
| MMS group conversation | Participants can reply to the group, and multimedia sharing is supported. | A group conversation may be handled as an MMS thread, but Samsung’s documentation still does not establish a Samsung Messages group-name control. |
| SMS sent to multiple people | The message can go to everyone while replies arrive individually. | This may not behave like one shared conversation, so a group-name command may not be available. |
Samsung’s support wording is: “The Samsung Messages app automatically opts for MMS in group chats, enabling multimedia sharing and conversations with multiple contacts.” The number of people allowed in a group can depend on your carrier. A carrier limit, message type, device model, or software version can therefore change what you see.

Samsung Messages versus Google Messages at a glance
| Question | Samsung Messages | Google Messages |
|---|---|---|
| Is a shared group-name control documented in Samsung’s guide? | No. The guide documents categories and group-message management instead. | Yes. Open the group, tap its name, choose Group name, enter text, and save. |
| Can you label a conversation for your own organization? | Yes, with conversation categories where supported. | The cited Samsung instructions focus on the group-name control rather than Samsung Messages categories. |
| Which Android versions matter? | Samsung identifies its Samsung Messages instructions with Android 11 or older. | Google Messages is the alternative Samsung points affected users toward. |
| Does regional or carrier support matter? | Yes. Samsung warns that availability varies by device, carrier, software version, market, and some devices purchased outside the United States. | Availability and labels can also vary by device, carrier, and software version. |
Samsung Messages availability on newer Galaxy phones
Samsung says Samsung Messages was discontinued on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or higher in the U.S. Users on Android 11 or lower are not affected by that stated end of service. This is market-specific guidance, not a guarantee that every Galaxy phone worldwide follows the same schedule.
If your Galaxy phone runs Android 12 or later and Samsung Messages is missing, disabled, or no longer receiving support, use the messaging app Samsung provides for your device—often Google Messages—and then follow the Google Messages steps above if the Group name control is available. Do not install an older Samsung Messages package solely to obtain a naming feature that Samsung’s documentation does not promise.
Before changing apps, consider whether your conversations, notification settings, and carrier configuration need to be retained. The default SMS-app setting and migration prompts can differ by model and market. Samsung specifically cautions that features may vary on devices bought outside the U.S., so a result seen in one country is not proof of availability in another.

You are actually in Samsung Messages
Switching to a Samsung Messages thread will not reveal the Google Messages command. Confirm the app name, then decide whether a local category is sufficient or whether you need the documented Google Messages group-name workflow.

The thread is a one-to-one conversation
The Group name control is documented for a group conversation. A conversation with one recipient will not have a group label. Check that multiple recipients are present before looking for the command.
The thread is behaving like individual SMS messages
If replies arrive separately instead of in one shared thread, the conversation may be using an SMS-to-multiple-recipients pattern rather than an MMS group conversation. Carrier configuration and participant limits can affect this behavior. The messaging app may not offer the same group controls in that format.
Your phone, carrier, or region differs from the guide
Samsung lists device, carrier, software-version, and market differences as reasons features may not match its screenshots or wording. A phone purchased outside the U.S. can have additional limitations. Check the app’s current menus and your carrier’s group-messaging support instead of assuming a missing command is hidden.
You expected a category to rename the group
Categories organize your own Samsung Messages inbox. They do not establish the shared group-display-name feature documented for Google Messages. Keep the two functions separate when explaining the result to other participants.

Choose a name that works in notifications
A useful group name identifies the purpose quickly without exposing information that members would not want visible on a lock screen, shared display, or notification preview. Short names are easier to scan and less likely to be truncated.
- Base the name on the group’s shared activity, in-joke, or purpose.
- Avoid addresses, travel dates, health details, workplace secrets, or other private facts.
- Use a spelling that everyone can recognize; unusual punctuation can be hard to search.
- Prefer a name that will still make sense after the immediate event ends.
Original name ideas by group type
| Group | Ideas |
|---|---|
| Family | The Home Team; Cousins & Co.; The Usual Suspects; Sunday Supper Club |
| Friends | The Group Project; Plans Pending; The After Hours; Main Characters |
| Travel | Gate Change Gang; The Scenic Route; Passport Pending; Miles & Memories |
| Work or study | Mission Control; The Deadline Club; Brainstorm Bureau; The Study Hall |
| Hobby | The Side Quest; Weekend Workshop; The Replay Crew; Booked & Busy |
These are naming suggestions, not claims about names built into either messaging app. Pick one that matches the people and purpose in the thread.
A practical decision checklist
- Check the app: Confirm whether the conversation is in Samsung Messages or Google Messages.
- Check the thread type: Make sure it is a genuine multi-person conversation, not a one-to-one thread or a send-to-many SMS pattern.
- Use the documented control: In Google Messages, tap the group name, choose Group name, enter the label, and save.
- If Samsung Messages is open: Use Edit categories for your own inbox, but do not call that a shared group name.
- Check compatibility: Account for Android version, carrier, device model, market, and whether the phone was purchased outside the U.S.
- Protect privacy: Choose a concise label that is safe to display in notifications.
The key distinction is simple: Samsung’s current U.S. documentation gives Google Messages a documented group-name workflow, while Samsung Messages documentation gives you conversation organization rather than a promised shared display name.
