You can apply each entry to your Home timeline, notifications, or both. This filters matching text in those areas; it does not remove every sports post or block the topic across X.
Mute a sports word or hashtag on X
X groups the muted-word instructions for iOS, Android, and desktop, though button placement and labels can vary by interface. The current published route is through notification settings:

- Open the Notifications tab and select its settings or gear control.
- Go to Muted, then Muted words.
- Select Add and enter a sport, team, league, player name, phrase, or hashtag you want to filter.
- Choose whether the entry applies to Home timeline, Notifications, or both.
- Select a duration and save. Available choices listed by X are Forever, 24 hours, 7 days, and 30 days.
Add entries one at a time. For example, you could add a league name and a team name separately, then add common terms or hashtags that appear in posts you want to reduce. This is a practical starting point, not an exhaustive list: X does not promise that a set of keywords will catch every sports post. See X’s instructions for advanced muting options if the controls differ in your version.

What muted words match
- Matching is case-insensitive. Muting “NBA” also matches “nba.”
- A word also covers its hashtag form. X says muting “unicorn” also mutes “#unicorn,” so you generally do not need a separate entry for the hashtag version of the same word.
- Phrases can include punctuation. Punctuation at the end of a phrase is not required.
- To target a username mentioned as text, include the @ sign. This filters matching text; it does not mute that account.
These matching rules help reduce posts that contain the terms you enter, but they cannot identify every post about a sport. A post may discuss a game without using the words or names you muted.

Where the filter applies—and where it does not
X Help Center states: “Muting words and hashtags only applies to your notifications and Home timeline.” In practice, select the Home timeline, notifications, or both when you add an entry; muted posts can still appear in search results. The control should not be treated as an X-wide block on sports content.
There is also an exception for some mobile alerts: if you opted in to mobile notifications when an account you follow posts, X says muted words and hashtags do not apply to those alerts. A followed Topic and a muted word are different controls, too. X describes the For You timeline as including followed accounts and Topics as well as recommendations, and its muted-word guidance does not promise suppression across every recommendation surface. See X’s explanation of the timeline for how those sources of posts are described.

Choose the right control for the sports content you see
| Control | What it targets | Scope or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Muted words | Words, phrases, and hashtags in posts | Choose Home timeline, notifications, or both. Search results remain visible; some opted-in mobile post alerts from followed accounts are not covered. X Help Center |
| Mute an account | A particular account’s posts | Removes that account’s posts from your timeline without unfollowing or blocking it. It does not target sports terms in posts by other accounts. X account muting guidance |
| Notification filters | Categories of accounts or notification activity | X’s quality and advanced filters are separate notification controls; they are not keyword filters for sports content. X Notifications documentation |
If the unwanted content comes mostly from one account, muting that account may be more direct. If the posts come from many accounts but repeat recognizable terms, muted words are the relevant text-based option. Neither control guarantees that all sports-related content disappears from every X surface.
