X is the only one of these three services with a documented, native viewer keyword mute. Its muted-word tool can remove matching text from your Home timeline and notifications for a chosen period. Reddit relies on spoiler labels that blur thumbnails and hide previews, while YouTube’s documented blocked-words setting is for creators moderating comments and live chat—not for viewers hiding video titles, thumbnails, or recommendations.
For the strongest protection, set a broad list of terms on X, avoid spoiler-prone Reddit communities and rely on their spoiler rules, and train YouTube’s recommendations away from the game. None of these measures can guarantee protection from screenshots, euphemisms, misspellings, untagged posts, or an accidental click.

Which service can actually mute spoiler keywords?
The controls are different enough that treating them as interchangeable causes disappointment. X offers a viewer-facing text mute. Reddit’s official feature is a reveal barrier applied to posts, not a personal blacklist. YouTube’s documented blocked-words list belongs to channel owners and affects comments and live chat.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Service | Who controls it | Where it applies | Matching and duration | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| X | Viewer | Home timeline, replies, notifications, push notifications, and email/SMS notifications, depending on the options selected | Case-insensitive text matching; a muted word also covers its hashtag form. Choose 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, or Forever. | Muted posts still appear in search. Followed-account mobile notifications that you opted into may still arrive, and images without the term are not filtered. |
| Poster or moderator applies the spoiler label; viewer controls when to reveal it | Tagged post thumbnails are blurred and previews are hidden until you open the post | No personal arbitrary-keyword blacklist is documented in Reddit’s cited help guidance; labels remain until a viewer reveals the post | Untagged posts, misleading titles, and communities that do not follow spoiler rules can expose you. | |
| YouTube | Channel creator | Comments and live-chat messages on that creator’s channel or videos | Creators add words or phrases; matching comments may be held for up to 60 days. The setting applies to future comments. | It is not documented as a viewer filter for video titles, thumbnails, search results, or recommendations. |
The current Activision support page, dated October 16, 2026, uses the title wording “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.” Use that exact phrase, plus the shorter forms people are likely to post, when building your mute list.

Build a spoiler keyword list that catches real conversations
A single phrase is too narrow. People abbreviate the game, use a hashtag, mention a campaign mission instead of the title, or write a spoiler warning without naming the game. Start with broad terms, then add safe, known names only after you have confirmed them. Adding a very common word can hide unrelated posts, so review your list if your timeline becomes empty or confusing.
Core title and abbreviation terms
Modern Warfare 4Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4MW4COD MW4Call of Duty(use this broad term only if you are willing to suppress unrelated Call of Duty discussion)
Spoiler-signaling terms

On X, matching is case-insensitive, so you do not need separate entries for uppercase and lowercase. A muted word also mutes its hashtag form. If a phrase is commonly written as a hashtag or joined term that may not be caught as you expect, add that hashtag variant separately. Add character, mission, or location names only when you know them; otherwise you may accidentally hide older games, unrelated media, or ordinary conversation.
How to mute Modern Warfare 4 terms on X
X’s help guidance says that users can mute posts containing particular words, phrases, usernames, emojis, or hashtags. The setting is available on iOS, Android, and desktop. Add entries individually because each term has its own scope and duration choices.

Set up the mute list
- Open Notifications.
- Tap or click the gear icon.
- Choose Muted.
- Choose Muted words.
- Select Add.
- Enter one term, such as
Modern Warfare 4, then save it. - Repeat for the other terms in your list.
Choose where and how long each term is muted
For each entry, select Home timeline, Notifications, or both. Where X presents an audience-scope choice, select the scope that matches how aggressively you want to filter. Then choose Forever, 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days. A temporary period is useful if you only want protection around launch or review dates; Forever is better when you do not want to see story discussion until you deliberately remove the mute.
For a practical first pass, add the title and abbreviation terms with Home timeline and Notifications enabled. Add spoiler, spoilers, leak, leaks, ending, campaign, and story if you want a wider filter. Broad terms create more false positives, so you can remove them later while keeping the title-specific entries.
Understand what X’s mute does not do
- Search is not filtered. X explicitly warns that you will still see matching posts through search. Do not search for the game, its abbreviations, or likely mission names while trying to stay spoiler-free.
- Opted-in mobile notifications can be an exception. The help guidance notes that mobile notifications from followed accounts that you have opted into may still arrive even when they contain a muted term.
- Images are not text matching. A screenshot, thumbnail, meme, or image containing the spoiler can pass through when the post text does not contain one of your terms.
- Different wording bypasses the list. Misspellings, euphemisms, initials, coded language, and a character or mission name that you did not add will not necessarily match.
- The account is not blocked. Muting terms removes matching posts from the selected surfaces; it does not remove every post from an account everywhere.
Adjust the list after launch
Return to Notifications → gear → Muted → Muted words to edit or remove an entry. If unrelated posts disappear, remove the broadest term first. If a spoiler gets through, note the exact wording used in the post and add that term, its common plural, or a hashtag variant.

How Reddit’s spoiler protection works
Reddit’s official help describes spoiler tags as labels used to identify a post containing spoilers. When a post is marked, its thumbnail is blurred and its preview is hidden until you click to view it. Posters and moderators can apply the label, and a title containing spoiler or spoilers is automatically tagged. Titles containing no spoiler or no spoilers are not automatically tagged.
This is a labeling and reveal-control system, not a documented personal keyword blacklist for a reader’s home feed. Reddit’s cited guidance does not provide a setting equivalent to X’s muted words. A correctly tagged post gives you a decision point; it does not prevent an untagged title, comment, image, or cross-post from revealing the plot.
Use Reddit without exposing yourself
- Identify communities where Modern Warfare 4 discussion is likely and avoid opening them until you are ready for spoilers.
- Read each community’s spoiler rules before participating. Moderators may require spoiler tags, title formatting, or spoiler-free periods.
- Do not click blurred thumbnails or hidden previews unless you have decided that spoilers are acceptable.
- Be cautious with search results and external links. A post can be untagged or mislabeled even when a community generally follows its rules.
- If a community repeatedly exposes spoilers, leave it or avoid its feed rather than assuming Reddit will remove matching words for you.
Desktop extensions: useful, but not a Reddit setting
Third-party browser extensions can add page-level keyword filtering on desktop, but they are separate software. Before installing one, check when it was last maintained, which browser versions it supports, what permissions it requests, and whether it filters post titles, comments, images, or only visible page text. Treat an extension as an additional layer, not a guarantee: a filter may fail on dynamically loaded content, mobile apps, screenshots, or wording it does not recognize.

Why YouTube’s blocked-words setting does not mute spoilers for viewers
YouTube’s help page places blocked words in YouTube Studio comment settings. A channel creator can enter words and phrases that should not appear in comments; matching or closely matching comments may be held for review for up to 60 days, and live-chat messages can also be blocked. Held comments are reviewed in YouTube Studio. The setting applies to that channel’s comments and future comments.
That feature does not document a viewer control for hiding video titles, thumbnails, search results, or recommendation cards. Entering Modern Warfare 4 in a creator’s blocked-words list therefore protects that creator’s comment area; it does not protect your personal YouTube home page.

- Do not search for the game or likely spoiler terms. Searches and watch choices can expose titles and thumbnails before any recommendation control is available.
- Use the card menu immediately. When a spoiler-prone video appears, open the menu on its recommendation card and choose Not interested. If the source is consistently posting spoilers, choose Don’t recommend channel when that option is offered.
- Unsubscribe temporarily from high-risk channels. You can resubscribe after finishing the campaign or after your chosen spoiler-free period.
- Do not open a video merely to inspect it. The title, thumbnail, description, comments, and autoplay sequence may reveal more than the card did.
- Consider a reputable browser filter on desktop. A maintained extension may filter page text or video titles, but these controls are product-specific and can change. Recheck its maintenance status, permissions, and compatibility before relying on it.
The labels and menus in YouTube’s apps and browser can change. The actions above are practical viewer behaviors, not capabilities established by the blocked-words help article. YouTube does not document a native viewer keyword mute comparable to X’s feature in the cited guidance.
A layered spoiler-avoidance plan
No single service can recognize every spoiler. Use the controls in the order that limits accidental exposure.
Before you browse
- On X, add the title, abbreviation, spoiler terms, and any known hashtag variants. Set both Home timeline and Notifications if you want the broadest documented coverage.
- On Reddit, leave or avoid likely spoiler communities and read their spoiler policies before returning.
- On YouTube, unsubscribe temporarily from channels that publish launch coverage and be ready to use Not interested or Don’t recommend channel.
While browsing
- Do not use X search for the game; muted terms still appear there.
- Do not open Reddit’s blurred thumbnail or hidden preview unless you accept the risk.
- Do not click a YouTube recommendation just to identify it. Remove it from recommendations instead.
- Remember that text filters cannot read every spoiler embedded in an image or video thumbnail.
When a spoiler gets through
- Record the exact text, abbreviation, hashtag, character name, or mission name that bypassed your filter.
- Add the new term to X’s muted words if it is text-based and you want to suppress future matches.
- On Reddit, report an incorrectly tagged post to the community moderators and avoid opening further content from that thread.
- On YouTube, mark the recommendation as Not interested or block the channel recommendation when available.
- If the content is an image or video with no matching text, accept that a keyword list cannot address that particular bypass and tighten your browsing habits instead.
Common failure cases and fixes
| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A muted MW4 post appears in X search | Search is explicitly outside the mute’s coverage. | Do not use search for spoiler terms; rely on Home timeline and notification filtering. |
| An X notification contains a muted word | You opted into a mobile notification from a followed account, or the wording did not match. | Review notification choices, add the exact variant, and remember that image-only spoilers may pass through. |
| A Reddit thumbnail is visible | The post was not marked with a spoiler tag, or the community did not apply its rules. | Avoid the post and community; Reddit does not document a personal arbitrary-keyword mute. |
| A YouTube video title reveals the ending | YouTube’s blocked-words feature is for creator comments and live chat, not viewer recommendations. | Use the recommendation card menu, unsubscribe temporarily, avoid related searches, and consider a carefully vetted desktop filter. |
| Your filter hides too much unrelated discussion | A broad term such as story, campaign, or Call of Duty matches ordinary posts. |
Remove the broad term and keep title-specific entries such as Modern Warfare 4 and MW4. |
What protection you can and cannot expect
X gives you the most direct control: configurable viewer mutes, case-insensitive matching, hashtag coverage, selectable surfaces, and fixed durations. Reddit can prevent an accidental reveal when posters and moderators use spoiler tags correctly, but it does not provide the documented personal keyword blacklist many readers expect. YouTube offers creator-side comment moderation rather than a viewer-side title or recommendation filter, so avoidance and recommendation controls are the practical options.
Across all three services, protection is text-dependent and incomplete. Images, thumbnails, videos, misspellings, euphemisms, untagged posts, search results, and opted-in notifications can defeat a keyword strategy. Treat the filters as risk reduction, combine them with deliberate browsing, and remove the mutes when you are ready to discuss the game openly.
