Use X’s mute controls when you want less of a topic or person without the confrontation of a block. Muting an account removes its posts from your timeline without unfollowing it, and the account is not notified. Muted words, phrases, usernames, emojis and hashtags can be excluded from your Home timeline, notifications, or both. The controls are reversible, can expire automatically, and work independently of blocking, unfollowing and search filters.
The menu names can move as X updates its iOS, Android and web interfaces. The paths below follow X Help Center guidance checked on October 13, 2026; if a label has moved, look for the same Notifications, Privacy and safety and Muted sections.

Choose the control that matches the problem
Before changing a setting, decide whether the unwanted material comes from one account, particular terms, or a whole class of notifications. Muting is a visibility control: it changes what you see, but it does not delete posts or stop every form of contact.

X describes account muting as removing an account’s posts from your timeline without unfollowing or blocking it. See X’s account-mute guidance and its overview of experience controls for the current distinctions.

How to mute an account from a post
This is the fastest method when a specific post is the problem.
- Find a post from the account in your Home timeline or another X view.
- Open the post’s More menu (the three-dot icon).
- Select Mute. Confirm if X asks you to do so.
The post disappears from the relevant timeline, and future posts from that account are muted. X does not tell the account that you muted it.
How to mute an account from its profile
- Open the account’s profile.
- Tap or click the More menu near the profile controls.
- Choose Mute.
This route is useful when the account has not recently appeared in your timeline or when you are cleaning up several accounts. To see accounts you have already muted, open X’s privacy and safety settings, then the Muted accounts list. X documents platform-specific routes in How to mute accounts on X.
What account muting changes—and what it does not
Your follow remains in place
Muting does not unfollow the account. You can continue following it, and it can continue following you. This makes mute suitable for temporary events, prolific posters or topics you want to avoid without making the change visible.
The account is not alerted
Muted accounts are not notified. X also says you stop receiving push or SMS notifications from muted accounts.
Direct messages still work
Mute does not prevent the account from sending you a Direct Message. If unwanted contact is the issue, use the account-level controls that restrict messaging rather than relying on mute alone.

Replies and mentions depend on whether you follow the account
For an account you follow, its replies and mentions can still appear in Notifications. In conversations, some replies from a followed muted account can remain visible. For an account you do not follow, X hides its replies and mentions from Notifications, and replies from that account are hidden when you open the conversation. This follow-status distinction is why an account mute may not make every interaction disappear.
How to unmute or review muted accounts
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Go to Privacy and safety.
- Open the Muted accounts list.
- Select an account and choose Unmute, or use the list to review which accounts are muted.
The same list is available through X’s iOS, Android and x.com settings, although the exact nesting can change. Unmuting restores the account’s normal visibility; it does not automatically alter your follow status.
How to mute a word, phrase, hashtag or username
Word mutes are managed from notification settings. X allows individual entries for words, phrases, usernames, emojis and hashtags. Add each term separately rather than assuming one broad entry will cover every variation.
- Open the Notifications tab.
- Select the notifications settings gear.
- Choose Muted, then Muted words.
- Select Add (or the equivalent plus button).
- Enter one word, phrase, username, emoji or hashtag.
- Choose where it applies: Home timeline, Notifications, or both.
- If you selected notifications, choose whether the filter applies to Everyone or only to People you don’t follow, where that option is offered.
- Choose a duration and save the entry.
X publishes instructions for iOS, Android and desktop in How to use advanced muting options. If your app uses slightly different wording, remain in the Notifications settings and look for Muted words.
Build word mutes that catch the posts you actually want to avoid
Use the exact term and its common forms
Word matching is case-insensitive. Muting unicorn also mutes #unicorn, so you do not need a second hashtag entry for the same spelling. Add a separate entry for a meaningful alternate spelling, abbreviation or phrase when people use one.

Use the at-sign for references to one account
To filter posts and notifications that mention a particular account, include the @ sign, such as @example. This filters references containing that username; it does not mute the account itself. Use account mute when you want the account’s posts removed regardless of the words they contain.
Enter one item at a time
X’s muted-word list treats entries individually. A phrase is one entry, while separate unrelated terms require separate entries. Review the list later and remove terms that are too broad or no longer useful.
Set the right scope and duration
| Setting | Effect | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Home timeline | Removes matching posts from your Home timeline | You want a quieter feed but still want ordinary notification filtering handled separately |
| Notifications | Filters matching notifications; X can distinguish everyone from people you do not follow | The problem is replies, mentions or interaction alerts rather than the timeline itself |
| Home timeline and Notifications | Applies the term in both places | You want the broadest word-based reduction available through mute |
| Forever | Stays active until you edit or delete it | A lasting subject or phrase you consistently do not want to see |
| 24 hours | Expires after one day | A short event, live broadcast or temporary news cycle |
| 7 days | Expires after one week | A limited campaign, launch or recurring event |
| 30 days | Expires after 30 days | A month-long topic you want to revisit later |
Forever is the default duration. The four durations above are X product settings, not usage statistics. Choose a temporary period for fast-moving events so the list does not accumulate permanent filters.

What a muted word filters
X says word mutes apply to matching posts and to related replies and mentions and their interactions, including likes, reposts, further replies and quote posts. The practical result is that one term can reduce several kinds of notification noise, not merely a post in the Home timeline.
Notification filtering can be limited to people you do not follow. That option is useful when you want to keep interactions from followed accounts visible while reducing drive-by mentions or automated activity from unknown accounts.
Important limits of word muting
Search is not covered
Muted words do not remove matching posts from search. If you deliberately search for the term, matching results can still appear. For search, X provides a separate Safe Search setting that can exclude muted or blocked accounts from results; see X’s search guidance. Do not treat a word mute as a search deletion tool.

Mobile post alerts can be an exception
People who have opted into mobile notifications for posts from accounts they follow may continue to receive those alerts even when the post contains a muted term. If those alerts are the problem, review the followed-account post-notification setting as well as your muted-word list.

A mute is not moderation or removal
Other users can still publish the post, and it remains available in places not covered by the setting. Muting changes your view; it does not report, delete or alter the original content.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Mute, unfollow, block or filter notifications?
Choose mute when preserving the relationship matters
Mute is the least disruptive option. Use it for a prolific account, a temporary disagreement, a recurring topic or a person you still want to follow quietly. The account receives no alert, and your follow remains.
Choose unfollow when the timeline itself is the issue
Unfollowing stops that account’s posts from appearing because you follow it. It is more visible as a relationship change than mute, but it is straightforward when you no longer need the account in your feed.
Choose block for access and contact restrictions
Blocking is for stronger boundaries around following, Direct Messages and engagement. It is not merely a quieter timeline setting.
Choose notification quality or advanced filters for broad noise
If the problem is low-quality or automated-looking notifications rather than a particular term or account, use X’s notification-quality and advanced-filter controls. These can target categories of accounts and notification types, while leaving your timeline and follow relationships unchanged. The distinctions are outlined in Control your X experience.

Troubleshooting when muted content still appears
The post appears in search
This is expected: word mutes do not filter search. Use search’s Safe Search controls if your goal is to exclude muted or blocked accounts from search results.
A followed account’s reply or mention appears
Account mute has different behavior for followed and unfollowed accounts. Replies and mentions from a followed muted account can remain in Notifications, and some replies can remain visible inside a conversation. If you need those interactions gone, consider unfollowing, blocking or adjusting notification filters.
You received a mobile post alert containing the muted term
Check whether you opted into post alerts for that followed account. X documents this as an exception to word-mute filtering. Turn off that account’s post notifications if the alerts are unwanted.
The wrong posts disappeared
Review the muted-word entry for broad words, punctuation and scope. A short word can occur inside many unrelated terms. Edit or delete the entry from Notifications settings > Muted > Muted words, then replace it with a more specific phrase or hashtag.
You cannot find the setting
Use the settings search, if your X client provides one, and search for Muted words or Muted accounts. Otherwise start from the Notifications tab for word mutes and Privacy and safety for account mutes. X can rename menu items between app releases and the web interface.
A practical cleanup workflow
- Identify the source. Is one account responsible, or is the same topic coming from many accounts?
- Pick the narrowest control. Use account mute for one publisher and a word mute for a topic, hashtag or phrase.
- Set the scope deliberately. Choose Home timeline, Notifications or both instead of assuming the widest setting is best.
- Use an expiry for temporary events. Select 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days rather than Forever when the topic has a known end.
- Test the result in the place that matters. Check Home, Notifications and search separately; they are not governed by the same filter.
- Escalate only when needed. Unfollow or block when you need a relationship or contact boundary, not merely less visibility.
- Review periodically. Remove obsolete terms and unmute accounts when the reason for the filter has passed.
Privacy and safety considerations
Muting is discreet: X does not notify the muted account. That discretion can make it useful for avoiding an unnecessary confrontation, but it should not be confused with a safety response. If an account is harassing, threatening or attempting unwanted contact, save relevant evidence and use X’s reporting, blocking and privacy tools as appropriate.
Because a mute does not stop Direct Messages and does not remove content from search, check the other surfaces where you may encounter the account or term. A clean Home timeline alone does not mean the material has been removed from X.

Key takeaways
- Mute an account from a post or its profile to hide its posts without unfollowing or blocking it.
- Add words, phrases, usernames, emojis and hashtags under Notifications settings > Muted words.
- Word mutes can cover Home timeline, Notifications or both, with durations of Forever, 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days.
- Muting is case-insensitive; the hashtag form of a muted word is covered, while an
@entry filters references rather than muting the account. - Search remains separate, and followed-account mobile post alerts can still bypass a muted term.
- Use unfollowing, blocking, notification-quality filters or Safe Search when the problem is broader than visibility in the Home timeline.
