Turn on the platform’s broad sensitive-content or Restricted Mode setting, mute or unfollow accounts that repeatedly post upsetting material, mark recommendations as Not interested or Show less often, mute words where available, and disable autoplay on every device you use.
These settings lower exposure and reduce surprise playback, but they are not perfect blockers. Filters can miss new or coded terms, and their behavior can vary by age, country, account type, device and rollout. If a post is traumatic or threatening, leave the feed and block or report the source instead of trying to manage it only with recommendation settings.

What each control can and cannot do
Social-media safety controls work at different points in the viewing process. Using the right combination matters because a broad filter cannot silence one persistent account, while muting one account does not change unrelated recommendations.
| Control type | Scope | When it acts | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad sensitive-content or Restricted Mode setting | Recommendations or mature-content exposure across a service | Before content is recommended or displayed in supported surfaces | You may see fewer legitimate recommendations along with fewer upsetting items |
| Mute, hide, unfollow or block | A particular account, post or story | After you identify a recurring source, with some options available directly from a post menu | Muting can preserve a connection while hiding posts; blocking ends the account’s access to you more completely |
| Not interested or Show less often | Recommendations related to a post, creator or topic | After an unwanted recommendation appears | It guides the recommendation system but does not guarantee that similar material disappears |
| Muted words or phrases | Matching words in supported notifications, posts or other surfaces | When the service checks text against your mute list | Coded, misspelled or image-only references can bypass a word filter |
| Media warnings | Potentially sensitive media | Before you open or view warned media | You still have to make a decision at the warning screen |
| Autoplay off | Video playback on a particular device or app | Before the next video starts automatically | You must press play yourself, and the setting may be separate on other devices |
No platform cited here promises that every graphic or triggering item will be detected or blocked. Treat the settings as exposure reduction, not a guarantee.

Set up a layered protection plan
- Start with the broadest filter. Use Sensitive Content Control or Restricted Mode where the service offers it. Choose the strictest reduction option that still lets you use the service comfortably.
- Remove recurring sources. Mute, hide, unfollow or block accounts that repeatedly post upsetting material. Muting is useful when you want to remain connected without seeing someone’s posts.
- Train recommendations immediately. Whenever an unwanted suggestion appears, use Not interested, Show less often or the platform’s equivalent instead of watching, commenting or sharing it. Engagement can signal interest to a recommendation system.
- Mute language that reliably precedes distressing posts. Add words and phrases to the service’s mute list where that feature exists. Include common spelling variations only when you know the platform supports them.
- Stop surprise playback. Turn autoplay off on every phone, computer, television and tablet you use. Services can store this preference separately by device or browser.
- Escalate serious material. Leave the feed, then block or report content that is traumatic, threatening or otherwise violates platform rules. For a child or teen, add device-level supervision rather than relying only on an in-app filter.
Instagram: reduce Explore recommendations and mute accounts
Turn on Sensitive Content Control
Instagram’s Sensitive Content Control changes how much sensitive content appears in Explore. Meta provides three choices: Limit, Allow and Limit Even More. The Allow choice is unavailable to people under 18.
- Open your profile menu.
- Choose Settings and privacy.
- Open the Sensitive Content Control area.
- Select the strictest available reduction option, generally Limit Even More when it is offered for your account.
Meta describes this feature as giving people control over sensitive content. The setting is focused on what appears in Explore; it does not turn every post, message or account into a guaranteed safe zone. Read Meta’s explanation at Instagram Sensitive Content Control.
Handle a recurring account
When one account is the problem, mute or unfollow it from the account or post controls. Muting lets you remain connected while taking a break from that person’s content. If the material is abusive, threatening or illegal, blocking and reporting are more appropriate than simply muting.

Facebook: hide stories and adjust Feed preferences
Hide an upsetting story
Use Facebook’s Feed controls to hide an individual story as soon as it appears. The same controls let you adjust what appears in Feed, which helps reduce repeated recommendations from a source or topic.
- Open the options menu on the unwanted story.
- Choose the hide option for that story.
- Open Feed preferences to adjust what you see more broadly.
- Hide or snooze sources that repeatedly post upsetting material, then continue using Feed controls when similar recommendations appear.
Facebook’s help guidance describes these Feed preferences at Facebook Feed preferences.
Teen accounts
For teen accounts, Meta says the Reduce recommendation control makes potentially sensitive content harder to encounter in places such as Search and Explore. Meta’s description of age-appropriate protections is available at Meta’s teen protections update. Because teen protections can differ from adult settings, check the account’s own controls rather than assuming an adult profile’s options will appear.
X: mute sources, words and sensitive media
Reduce a post or account from the timeline
Open the menu on a post and choose to mute the account or select Show less often. X states that muted accounts are not notified. Muting is different from blocking or unfollowing: it changes what you see without necessarily ending the connection.

Mute words and phrases
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Go to the privacy and safety controls.
- Open the muted-words area.
- Add words or phrases you do not want appearing in notifications.
Use the word-muting control for predictable text triggers, but remember that it cannot reliably catch a graphic image with no matching text or a deliberately altered spelling.
Show a warning over sensitive media
Enable the option to show a warning over media that may contain sensitive content. A warning inserts a decision point before the media is displayed, which is useful when you do not want an unexpected image or video to load while scrolling.
X documents these controls in its control-your-X-experience guidance and explains recommendation feedback in its recommendations guidance.
TikTok: use Restricted Mode and mute creators
Turn on Restricted Mode
TikTok’s Restricted Mode limits exposure to content that may contain mature or complex themes. Enable it from the account’s safety settings, then keep it on while browsing the For You feed if mature themes are a concern. TikTok’s current instructions are at TikTok Restricted Mode.

This combination handles both an isolated recommendation and a creator who appears repeatedly. TikTok also supports muting push notifications, which can prevent alerts from pulling you back into an upsetting stream. Its muting instructions are at TikTok’s muting help page.
YouTube: combine Restricted Mode with device-specific autoplay settings
Turn on Restricted Mode
Open the profile menu or Settings and enable Restricted Mode. YouTube says the feature uses signals including a video’s title, description, metadata, Community Guidelines reviews and age restrictions. It is an optional setting, not a promise that every graphic video will be removed.
Restricted Mode works at the browser or device level. Turning it on in a phone app does not automatically configure a television, another browser or a separate computer. Follow YouTube’s instructions at YouTube Restricted Mode help.

- Repeat on mobile, computer, TV and any other device where you watch.
YouTube allows separate autoplay settings for mobile, computer, TV and other devices. Confirm the switch on each one instead of assuming a single account-wide change. The device instructions are at YouTube Autoplay help.

One account posts upsetting material
Mute the account when you want to stay connected without seeing its posts. Unfollow when you no longer need the connection in your feed. Block when you want the strongest separation, particularly for harassment or repeated unwanted contact.
A recommendation appears once
Use Not interested or Show less often immediately. Do not open the item merely to verify how upsetting it is; opening, watching or interacting can create additional recommendation signals.
A topic keeps returning through different accounts
Use the broad filter first, then add relevant words or phrases where the service supports muting. Continue giving negative recommendation feedback when a new account surfaces the topic, because a word list alone cannot cover image-only posts or unfamiliar wording.
Video starts before you can react
Disable autoplay on that service and repeat the change on every device. A warning setting, where available, adds another pause before sensitive media opens.
Compare controls by the decision you need to make
Choose a control based on whether you want to prevent, pause or correct exposure. A broad filter acts across recommendations before you select an item, but it can also remove benign material. A warning leaves the choice to you at the moment media is about to open. Autoplay prevention is narrower: it does not judge content, but it stops the next video from beginning without a deliberate tap.
Source controls are more permanent than a single recommendation signal. A mute or unfollow targets one account, while a block creates a stronger boundary. On X, muting does not notify the account and is explicitly different from blocking or unfollowing. On Instagram, muting is designed to let you remain connected while taking a break from someone’s content. Review those side effects before choosing the strongest option.

Coverage also differs. A control aimed at Explore, Search, a For You feed or notifications may not cover comments, direct messages, stories or another recommendation surface. Check where the setting applies, then repeat the relevant protection in each place where exposure occurs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fast setups for common situations
- You want fewer graphic videos everywhere: enable the broad filter or Restricted Mode, turn autoplay off, and use negative recommendation feedback on every unwanted clip.
- One friend or creator is the recurring source: mute first if you want to preserve the connection; unfollow or block if the material or contact continues.
- Specific words are the trigger: add those words and known variants to a muted-words list where supported, then keep the broad filter active because images and coded language can bypass text matching.
- You are configuring a teenager’s account: use the account’s own age-appropriate controls and add device-level supervision. Do not assume an adult profile exposes the same options.
- You need a pause before any sensitive media opens: use X’s sensitive-media warning and disable autoplay on video services.
Why filters miss content and how to troubleshoot
- New or coded language: A muted-word list cannot anticipate every euphemism, misspelling or code. Add recurring variants only after you identify them, and keep the broad filter enabled.
- Image-only or video-first posts: Text filters may not match content whose trigger appears only in pixels or audio. Use source controls and recommendation feedback as well.
- Different surfaces: A setting may target Explore, Search, a recommendation feed or notifications without covering direct messages, comments or every other surface. Check the control’s stated scope.
- Device separation: YouTube explicitly keeps Restricted Mode and Autoplay at browser or device level. Other services can also present different controls by app, account, age or rollout, so verify the setting where the exposure occurs.
- Age and region differences: Instagram’s Allow option is unavailable under 18, and Meta’s teen protections add separate recommendation controls. Availability can also vary by country, account type and staged rollout.
- Recommendations learn from behavior: Watching, sharing or commenting on an upsetting clip can look like interest. Use the negative-feedback control and leave the item instead.
If a setting appears to do nothing, close and reopen the app, check that you changed the active account, and test the same feed after confirming the control is still enabled. If the material is severe, do not keep testing the filter: leave, block or report it.

Protect children and yourself beyond feed settings
For a child or teen, combine the platform’s age-appropriate controls with device-level supervision. In-app filters can reduce recommendations but cannot govern every browser, shared account or notification channel.
When content causes a strong reaction, put distance between yourself and the feed: stop scrolling, close the app and take a break before deciding whether to report it. Blocking removes a source from your immediate experience; reporting sends the item to the platform’s review process. Use both when the material is threatening, exploitative or otherwise unsafe.
Recheck settings after app updates, account changes or switching devices. A layered setup remains more dependable than a single filter, while still requiring occasional review as recommendations and platform controls change.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop seeing graphic videos on social media?
Turn on the platform’s broad sensitive-content or Restricted Mode setting, disable autoplay, and use Not interested or Show less often whenever an unwanted recommendation appears. Mute, unfollow or block accounts that repeatedly post upsetting videos. These steps reduce exposure but cannot guarantee that every item will be blocked.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I mute triggering words or accounts?
Use a muted-words feature where the service provides one, adding predictable words and phrases. For accounts, open the post or profile controls and choose mute; unfollow or block when you need a stronger separation. Text muting cannot reliably catch image-only posts, audio, coded language or altered spellings.
Best Value
How do I turn off autoplay for upsetting content?
Open the service’s playback or video controls and switch Autoplay off. Repeat the change on every phone, browser, television, tablet or other device you use. YouTube specifically keeps Autoplay settings separate by device or platform.
Is there a sensitive-content filter on Instagram?
Yes. Instagram’s Sensitive Content Control offers Limit, Allow and Limit Even More for content shown in Explore. Allow is unavailable to people under 18. Choose the strictest reduction option available to your account, then mute or unfollow recurring sources.
Does TikTok have a filter for mature themes?
TikTok’s Restricted Mode limits exposure to content that may contain mature or complex themes. You can also mark a post Not interested, choose Creator to reduce that creator’s posts when offered, mute the creator from the profile, and mute push notifications.

X provides an option to show a warning over media that may contain sensitive content. You can also mute accounts, choose Show less often, and mute words or phrases in notifications. Muted accounts are not notified, and muting is different from blocking or unfollowing.
Will YouTube Restricted Mode block every graphic video?
No. YouTube describes Restricted Mode as an optional setting that uses signals such as titles, descriptions, metadata, Community Guidelines reviews and age restrictions. It reduces exposure, but it is not a guarantee. Keep Autoplay off as an additional safeguard.
What should I do if a post is traumatic or threatening?
Stop viewing it and leave the feed. Block the source and report the item when appropriate instead of repeatedly testing a filter. For children and teens, add device-level supervision because an in-app setting may not cover every browser, account or notification channel.
The Bottom Line
Use layers: enable the broadest filter, mute recurring sources and triggering words, give immediate negative feedback on recommendations, and turn autoplay off on every device. Because platform controls differ by surface, age, region and device—and no service promises perfect detection—leave, block or report material that is traumatic, threatening or unsafe.
