Mute or block the player immediately, stop replying, and file one clear report through the game’s own reporting tool. If the player keeps contacting you through alternate characters, accounts, or channels, escalate with a support ticket that identifies the account, timing, location, conduct, and any unedited chat evidence you retained.
Toxic chat is disruptive, but you do not have to win an argument or diagnose the other player’s motives before acting. The safest, most useful sequence is to cut off the chat, preserve enough context to explain what happened, submit one report under the closest conduct category, and escalate only when the behavior continues or bypasses the game’s controls.

The correct order: disengage, report, then escalate
1. Mute, ignore, blacklist, or block first
Use the fastest control available in the current chat window or player menu. A mute or ignore setting removes the unwanted stream from your view; a blacklist or block usually also limits direct contact or interaction, depending on the game. This gives you distance from the conflict and reduces the chance that an angry reply will become part of the moderation record.

Final Fantasy XIV specifically recommends adding a character to its blacklist or mute list as an initial response to harassment. Blizzard gives the same practical direction for ongoing World of Warcraft harassment: put the character on ignore and do not respond. The Elder Scrolls Online directs players to add the person to the Block/Ignore list when reporting. Guild Wars 2 combines reporting and blocking from its player and chat interfaces; use the report action and then block the player.

2. Do not argue back
Replying can prolong the exchange, expose more of your own messages to review, and make a straightforward incident harder to explain. You do not need to warn the person, threaten a report, or establish who started the dispute. Blizzard’s ongoing-harassment guidance explicitly says not to respond. Leaving the conversation is a practical safety step, not an admission that the other player was right.
3. Submit one report through the native tool
Use the game’s built-in report function or its designated support category rather than continuing a public argument. Select the conduct reason that best describes the behavior: harassment for targeted abuse, spam for repeated commercial or disruptive messages, and cheating or botting when those categories fit the event and are available in the menu.
A complete report is more useful than a series of short, duplicate reports. Guild Wars 2 says duplicate reports do not speed action. Its support guidance also warns that misusing the report tool can lead to account termination, so do not report someone merely because you dislike a legitimate opinion, lost a match, or want retaliation.
4. Escalate persistent or evasive harassment
Open a support ticket when the behavior continues after you use the game’s controls, when the player circumvents an ignore or block setting, or when alternate characters or accounts keep contacting you. Blizzard treats circumvention of ignore or other contact limits as ongoing harassment and says its staff can investigate chat logs. The same escalation principle applies when someone follows you between channels or repeatedly reappears after being blocked.
How to capture evidence without making the situation worse
Record the identifiers support can act on
Before closing the relevant chat or support window, note the character name and, if visible, the account name. Also record the approximate time, the chat channel or in-game location, and a concise description of what happened. Guild Wars 2 lists these details for a support ticket, and they are useful context for any publisher reviewing logs.

- Character name: Copy the spelling exactly, including capitalization or punctuation when the interface displays it.
- Account name: Include it only when the game exposes it to you; do not try to uncover private information.
- Time: Give an approximate time and your time zone if the form allows it. A narrow window helps staff locate logs.
- Channel or location: Identify party chat, a guild channel, a public zone, a whisper, a mail system, or another relevant location.
- Conduct summary: Describe the specific behavior and its target rather than labeling the person generally as “toxic.”
Preserve context in screenshots or logs
If the game permits screenshots or chat-log exports, keep the surrounding lines that show who spoke, where, and when. Do not crop away the context that makes the sequence understandable, and do not edit a screenshot to change the apparent wording. You can highlight a line for your own reference, but retain the original file. If the game does not provide a log export, a screenshot of the native chat window is still more useful when the player name and channel are visible.
Do not chase the player for more evidence, bait them into saying something worse, or publish their messages as a public callout. The purpose of evidence is to help the publisher review a defined event, not to create a second dispute outside the game.

Choosing the right report category
Harassment
Choose harassment when the conduct is targeted, abusive, threatening, or persistently directed at you or another player. Explain the repeated behavior, the specific statements or actions, and whether the player continued after you stopped responding or used a block or ignore control.
Spam
Use spam for repeated commercial messages or disruptive repetition that overwhelms chat. A single unwanted message and a sustained stream of repeated messages are different descriptions; state the frequency and channel rather than assuming moderators will infer it.
Cheating or botting
Select cheating or botting only when the observed conduct fits those categories and the game’s menu provides them. Report what you actually saw, such as behavior that appears automated or an apparent exploit, without presenting a guess as a proven fact.

Other categories
Some games provide additional reasons. Select the closest available option and use the description field to add the missing context. Avoid filing several categories for the same event unless the form specifically asks you to choose all applicable reasons.
Game-by-game instructions
Guild Wars 2
- In chat or a player panel, right-click the offending player’s name.
- Choose Report.
- Select the reason that matches the conduct.
- Send the report.
- Block the player so the immediate chat stream stops.
ArenaNet says one report is enough and that duplicate reports do not accelerate action. Its Game Masters investigate substantiated reports but do not disclose the outcome. Do not use the report tool for retaliation or mass-reporting; misuse can put your own account at risk. If the player returns on another character or account, provide the new identifiers and the earlier report context in a support ticket rather than submitting a stream of duplicate reports.

World of Warcraft
- Place the character on your ignore list as soon as the unwanted contact begins.
- Do not reply, even to tell the player that you are reporting them.
- Use Blizzard’s in-game reporting route for the abusive conduct.
- If the harassment continues, bypasses the ignore or contact limits, or appears through alternate characters or accounts, open Support and submit a ticket for ongoing harassment.
Blizzard says its staff can review chat logs in ongoing-harassment cases. It may notify the reported player of the reason for an action, but it does not reveal the reporter’s identity. A visible punishment is not guaranteed, and you should not interpret a lack of notification as proof that no review occurred.
FINAL FANTASY XIV
- Add the character to your blacklist or mute list immediately.
- Open the Support Desk by entering
/supportdeskin chat or using the Support Desk interface. - Choose Report Harassment or another category that accurately describes the conduct, such as Report Cheating when applicable.
- Include the character, time, location or channel, and a concise description of the incident.
- Use the support route again if the mute or blacklist does not stop continued contact, including contact from alternate characters or accounts.
The blacklist or mute is the immediate boundary; the Support Desk is the escalation path when the problem persists or needs staff review.

The Elder Scrolls Online
- Add the person to the Block/Ignore list.
- Use the in-game Report Player function.
- Select the category that fits the event. Bethesda identifies harassment, spam, exploiting, and botting as reportable categories.
- For continued contact or circumvention, provide the new character or account details through the game’s support process.
Report the behavior you observed, not a broad accusation. For example, distinguish targeted abuse from repeated spam or from suspected automation so the case reaches the appropriate review queue.
What to do when the player uses alts or multiple accounts
Recognize circumvention
A new character name after you block the original one is not necessarily a new, unrelated incident. Continued contact after you use an ignore or block control, repeated messages across channels, or a pattern of alternate accounts can indicate that the player is circumventing the game’s limits. You do not need to prove account ownership yourself; document the connection as clearly as you can and let the publisher investigate.
Keep the response narrow
Do not answer the new character to confirm that you noticed them. Block or ignore the new contact, note the identifier and time, and add those details to a support ticket. Explain that the contact continued after the earlier control was applied and reference the original report if the system gives you a case number.
Escalate rather than repeatedly reporting
Repeatedly pressing the same report button can create duplicate cases without adding useful information. A support ticket gives staff a place to review the sequence, compare chat logs, and consider whether the contact controls were deliberately bypassed. Include each relevant character or account name and a chronological summary rather than a long emotional narrative.
How publishers process reports—and what you should expect
A report is a request for review, not an instant punishment
Submitting a report sends the incident into the publisher’s moderation or support process. It does not guarantee a visible suspension, a reply, or a particular penalty. Guild Wars 2 says Game Masters investigate substantiated reports but will not disclose the outcome. That confidentiality means you may never learn what action, if any, was taken.
Your identity is handled differently from the accused player’s
Blizzard says it may tell the reported player the reason for an action while keeping the reporter’s identity confidential. Do not assume every game uses exactly the same notification policy. Avoid including personal information in a report that the publisher does not need; provide the game identifiers and incident details required for review.
Do not mass-report or retaliate
Coordinating reports to punish someone for a disagreement, filing knowingly false allegations, or abusing support channels can violate the game’s rules. Guild Wars 2 explicitly warns that misuse of its report tool can lead to account termination. A calm, accurate report protects your position better than a campaign against another player.

You can adapt the following structure to the game’s form without pasting unnecessary personal information:

Common mistakes that weaken a report
- Arguing first: A long back-and-forth creates more material and can obscure the original conduct.
- Reporting without identifiers: A nickname in your memory is less useful than the exact character name, time, and channel.
- Editing evidence: Cropping or altering messages can remove the context moderators need.
- Choosing the wrong category: Use harassment, spam, cheating, or botting according to what actually occurred.
- Submitting duplicates: In Guild Wars 2, duplicate reports do not speed action; use a support ticket when the case has materially changed.
- Publicly naming and shaming: A forum or social-media post does not replace the publisher’s report process and can expose other players’ information.
- Trying to investigate account ownership: Report the observed pattern and let the publisher compare its internal records.
- Expecting a visible result: Moderation outcomes are often confidential, so lack of a message is not a reliable measure of whether staff reviewed the report.
When the conduct crosses into an immediate safety issue
Use the game’s controls and support process for in-game harassment, but do not treat a serious real-world threat as ordinary trash talk. Preserve the message and relevant account details, stop engaging, and follow the publisher’s urgent safety or law-enforcement guidance where available. Do not publish personal information or attempt to confront the person yourself. The game report remains useful, but an immediate danger requires help appropriate to your location and circumstances.
A short checklist before you close the case
- Have you muted, ignored, blacklisted, or blocked the player?
- Did you stop replying?
- Did you copy the exact character name and any visible account name?
- Did you note the approximate time, channel, and location?
- Did you choose the closest conduct category?
- Did you preserve unedited screenshots or logs when permitted?
- Did you submit one complete report through the native tool?
- If contact continued, did you open the game’s support escalation path and list the later identifiers?
