How to Mow Your Lawn in October: Height, Frequency and Best Practices

Yes—keep mowing in October whenever your grass is still growing. Set the deck for your grass species, remove no more than one-third of the leaf at a time, mow often enough to prevent overgrowth, and stop only after growth has ended in your area. Cool-season lawns usually need more October attention than warm-season lawns, and the correct final-mow date depends on local temperatures rather than a calendar date.

Should you keep mowing in October?

October mowing is controlled by growth, not by the month on the calendar. If the lawn is producing new leaf tissue, continue cutting it. If growth has stopped locally, further mowing is unnecessary until the next growing period.

Grass type is the first decision. Cool-season grasses grow actively during the cooler parts of spring and fall, so they commonly continue growing through much of October. Warm-season grasses do most of their growing in summer and usually slow substantially or enter dormancy as fall temperatures decline. A warm-season lawn may therefore need fewer October cuts, while a cool-season lawn may still require regular mowing.

Do not choose a universal “last mow” date. Climate, species, irrigation, fertilizer, mowing height and local frost conditions all change the schedule. Iowa State University Extension’s 2024 review gives a regional example: Kentucky bluegrass commonly stops growing in late October or early November when daytime highs are consistently below 50°F. University of Minnesota Extension describes the end of October as a typical stopping point in its region. Those observations are useful reference points, not rules for every lawn.

Identify your grass before setting the mower

The same deck setting is not appropriate for every species. If you do not know the grass, identify it from seed or sod records, a local extension office, or a knowledgeable lawn professional before making a major height change. The ranges below are from Kansas State University Research and Extension’s 2024 guidance.

Grass species Recommended mowing height October implication
Tall fescue 2.5–3.5 inches Keep the deck within this range while growth continues.
Kentucky bluegrass 2–3 inches Continue mowing as long as it is actively growing; Iowa’s regional example places growth cessation around late October or early November when daytime highs stay below 50°F.
Buffalograss 2–3 inches As a warm-season grass, it generally slows as fall progresses; mow only while growth warrants it.
Bermudagrass 1–2 inches Use the species range rather than raising the deck outside the recommendation.
Zoysiagrass 1–2 inches Growth usually declines in fall; make the final cut based on actual growth and local conditions.

For a typical Midwest residential lawn, University of Minnesota Extension advises maintaining 3 inches or higher. That benchmark is especially useful when a lawn contains a mixture of cool-season species, but it does not override a species-specific recommendation.

Choose an October mowing height

Cool-season lawns

Iowa State University Extension advises lowering a cool-season lawn from about 3.0–3.5 inches to 2.5–3 inches in mid-to-late September. By October, stay in the recommended range for the species rather than repeatedly changing the deck. A practical general target for many cool-season residential lawns is roughly 2.5–3.5 inches, with 3 inches or higher a useful Midwest benchmark.

Lowering modestly can help prevent excessively tall leaf blades from lying over during late fall and winter. However, a lower setting is not automatically better. Cutting below the species recommendation removes too much leaf area and can expose the crown and soil. Make any seasonal adjustment gradually and keep it inside the published range.

Warm-season lawns

Bermudagrass and zoysiagrass are listed at 1–2 inches by Kansas State; buffalograss is listed at 2–3 inches. Warm-season grass may be mowed a little taller during late summer and early fall so it can store more carbohydrates for winter, according to Kansas State horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini. The taller setting may also help reduce cool-weather disease incidence, but it must still fall within the recommendation for that variety.

Do not raise warm-season turf indefinitely in the hope of providing winter insulation. Domenghini notes that when tall blades fall over, they can create a matted environment favorable to winter diseases. The goal is the correct species height, not the greatest possible height.

Keep the adjustment inside the range

“Follow recommendations for the variety of turf you are growing, but in general, you should maintain the proper height throughout the year,” Domenghini advises. That means October is a time to fine-tune a setting, not to scalp the lawn or leave it unusually tall.

How often should you mow in October?

There is no reliable October schedule such as every seven days. Kansas State states that mowing frequency depends on growth rate rather than a fixed time interval. Growth is affected by grass type, water, fertilizer, weather and the height you are trying to maintain.

Use the one-third rule at every cut: remove no more than one-third of the leaf tissue in a single mowing. If the grass is 4.5 inches tall and your target is 3 inches, cutting directly to 3 inches would remove one-third of the total height, but a larger reduction would violate the rule. If the lawn is substantially overgrown, raise the deck or make successive cuts, allowing the grass to recover between them, until you reach the target.

A simple frequency test

  • Measure or estimate the current blade height before mowing.
  • Compare it with your species-appropriate target.
  • Mow when the cut would remove no more than one-third of the leaf.
  • Check the lawn again after weather changes, watering or fertilization, because growth may accelerate or slow.
  • Stop scheduling cuts when the grass has stopped producing noticeable new growth.

October can therefore involve several cuts in one neighborhood and none in another. Two lawns with the same grass species may grow at different rates because of irrigation, fertilizer exposure, shade and local weather.

When is the final mow of the year?

Make the final mow after growth has stopped locally, not simply on a named date. A final cut made while the grass is still growing can leave the lawn too tall before winter; a cut made after growth has ended is usually unnecessary unless leaves or debris must be processed.

For Kentucky bluegrass, Iowa State’s 2024 review cites consistently below-50°F daytime highs as a sign that growth is ending, with late October or early November common in Iowa. Minnesota Extension places the transition generally around the end of October in its region. Use these as regional examples and watch your own lawn: the correct signal is ceased growth under your local conditions.

Keep the final setting within the normal species range. Cutting extremely short is not a substitute for timing, and leaving blades excessively tall can allow them to fall over and form the damp, matted conditions associated with winter disease.

How to mow leaves in October

Thin, dry leaf cover

A thin layer of dry leaves can often be mulched in place. Iowa State recommends mowing frequently with a mulching mower so the leaves are chopped into pieces small enough to fall between the grass blades. Kansas State explains that a mulching mower recuts material so it filters down into the turf canopy.

After mowing, look across the surface. The chopped material should not form a visible blanket that blocks light. If pieces remain piled on top of the grass, make another pass or collect them.

Thick leaf cover

A thick leaf layer can block light and cause dieback. Do not try to hide a heavy layer under the mower deck in one pass. Iowa State recommends multiple passes or collection when the leaves are too deep for clean mulching. Collect the material if repeated passes still leave a surface layer.

Wet leaves and clippings

Moisture is one of the factors that changes how practical a mowing pass will be. If leaves or clippings clump and remain on the surface, they are not being distributed through the canopy. Remove excess material rather than allowing it to accumulate.

When to collect grass clippings

Short clippings may remain on the lawn when they do not accumulate. Kansas State advises removing excess material that lies on the surface or contributes to thatch. The same visual check used for mulched leaves applies to clippings: material should filter into the turf, not form a layer that shades the grass.

Use the mower correctly for fall conditions

Keep the blade sharp

A sharp blade makes a clean cut. University of Minnesota Extension reports that dull blades leave jagged leaf ends and increase susceptibility to disease. Kansas State recommends inspecting the blade and keeping an extra sharp blade available so a damaged or dull blade does not force you to continue cutting poorly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Inspect the blade before October mowing begins.
  • Replace or sharpen it when the cutting edge is no longer clean.
  • Check the result after mowing: ragged, torn-looking tips indicate that the blade needs attention.

Change direction periodically

University of Minnesota Extension recommends changing mowing direction periodically. Alternating the direction encourages upright growth and reduces repeated scalping along the same wheel tracks or blade path.

Do not scalp an overgrown lawn

If growth outruns your schedule, do not solve the problem by dropping the deck to the final height in one pass. Remove no more than one-third of the leaf tissue, then make another cut later if necessary. A staged reduction protects the remaining leaf area and keeps the lawn within the one-third rule.

October choices by grass type and lawn condition

Decision factor Cool-season grass Warm-season grass
October growth Often still active through much of the month. Usually slowing toward dormancy, so mowing demand commonly declines.
Height reference Many residential lawns fall around 2.5–3.5 inches; Minnesota’s Midwest benchmark is 3 inches or higher. Use the species range: buffalograss 2–3 inches, bermudagrass 1–2 inches and zoysiagrass 1–2 inches.
Frequency Follow growth and the one-third rule; a regional Kentucky bluegrass example may continue until late October or early November. Mow only while active growth produces enough leaf to justify a cut.
Seasonal adjustment Iowa advises lowering from 3.0–3.5 inches to 2.5–3 inches in mid-to-late September. A slightly taller late-season setting can support carbohydrate storage, but it must remain inside the recommendation.
Final cut signal Growth has stopped locally; consistently below-50°F daytime highs are an Iowa example for Kentucky bluegrass. Growth has slowed or stopped under local fall conditions.

A practical October mowing procedure

  1. Identify the turf. Confirm whether the lawn is cool-season or warm-season and, if possible, identify the dominant species.
  2. Set the deck. Choose a height inside the species range. For many Midwest cool-season residential lawns, use at least 3 inches; use the narrower species ranges when known.
  3. Inspect the blade. Install or sharpen a blade that produces a clean cut.
  4. Check growth. Mow only where the grass has grown enough to justify a cut, and do not follow a calendar-based schedule automatically.
  5. Apply the one-third rule. If the lawn is too tall, raise the deck or plan successive cuts instead of scalping.
  6. Process leaves. Mulch thin, dry leaves with repeated passes; collect or remove thick layers that remain on the surface.
  7. Watch the discharge. Clippings and leaf pieces should filter into the canopy rather than form a visible blanket.
  8. Vary direction. Change the mowing pattern periodically to encourage upright growth and reduce repeated scalping.
  9. Reassess after weather changes. Water, fertilizer and temperature can change growth speed, so adjust the interval accordingly.
  10. Stop at growth cessation. Make the final cut when the lawn has stopped growing locally, using regional temperature guidance only as a reference.

Troubleshooting common October mowing problems

The lawn is too tall for the target setting

Do not lower the deck to the target and remove a large percentage of the leaf at once. Raise the setting so the first cut removes no more than one-third, then reduce toward the target through later cuts.

Leaves remain visible after mulching

Make another pass if the leaf layer is thin and dry. If the material still lies on top of the turf, collect it. A thick layer that blocks light should not be left in place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Grass tips look torn after mowing

Inspect the blade. A dull blade leaves jagged ends and can increase disease susceptibility; sharpen or replace it before the next cut.

The lawn looks matted after a tall final cut

Excessive height can fall over and create a damp, matted environment favorable to winter diseases. Keep the final setting within the species recommendation rather than leaving unusually tall blades for insulation.

One part of the yard is still growing while another has stopped

Treat the lawn according to actual growth. Shaded, irrigated or differently planted areas may not follow the same timing as exposed areas. Continue mowing where the one-third rule can be followed and stop where growth has ended.

October mowing checklist

  • Grass type identified before changing deck height.
  • Deck set within the published range for that species.
  • Cool-season lawn kept roughly in the 2.5–3.5-inch range when appropriate; 3 inches or higher is a useful Midwest residential benchmark.
  • Warm-season lawn kept within its species range rather than raised excessively.
  • No more than one-third of leaf tissue removed in a mowing.
  • Overgrown areas reduced through successive cuts instead of scalping.
  • Blade sharp enough to leave clean cuts.
  • Mowing direction changed periodically.
  • Thin, dry leaves mulched finely enough to disappear into the canopy.
  • Thick leaf or clipping accumulation removed when it blocks light or builds a surface layer.
  • Mowing stopped only after growth ended locally.

What matters most

October mowing is a condition-based job. Keep cutting while the grass grows, use the correct species height, remove no more than one-third of the leaf at a time, and manage leaves so they do not form a light-blocking layer. Sharp blades and changing direction protect cut quality. The final mow arrives when growth has stopped in your lawn—not on a universal date.
