You cannot complete this migration yet. As of October 13, 2026, Zcash’s official ZIP registry lists ZIP 2005, “Ironwood Quantum Recoverability,” as Proposed. It prepares certain Orchard notes for possible future recovery, but it does not make Zcash quantum-resistant, and its recovery protocol is not fully specified. No supported consumer-wallet procedure or named wallet for this exact move has been established.
The safe plan is to preserve your seed, identify whether your ZEC is in Sapling or Orchard, monitor official network and wallet announcements, and use only a documented migration flow after the protocol is activated. Do not improvise a sweep, buy a device because it uses “quantum-safe” wording, or send funds to an address marketed with that label.

What you can do today
There is no verified, end-to-end transaction that moves ZEC into a quantum-resistant wallet today. The relevant Zcash work is still at the proposal and development stage. Your immediate actions are preparation and verification:
- Keep your wallet seed and recovery information offline, private, and tested for restoration.
- Record which shielded pool holds your funds: Sapling, Orchard, or both.
- Follow the official Zcash ZIP registry and network-upgrade announcements for activation status.
- Wait for a wallet that explicitly documents support for the deployed recovery protocol and your account or seed format.
A new receiving address, a hardware signer, or a fresh seed does not perform a protocol transition by itself. A wallet can sign transactions securely and still lack the Zcash protocol changes required for post-quantum recovery.

Why “quantum-resistant wallet” is not a normal wallet upgrade
A quantum threat matters because a sufficiently capable quantum computer could break the discrete-log assumptions used by conventional public-key cryptography. Zcash’s proposed response is not simply to generate another address. It requires changes to how eligible notes are created, how funds are recovered if an old pool must be disabled, and how wallets move value between pools without unnecessarily exposing users.
That creates four separate layers that should not be conflated:
1. Preparation in the existing protocol
ZIP 2005 proposes an Orchard note-construction change intended to make qualifying notes recoverable through a later process. It is preparatory, not a complete defense.
2. A future recovery protocol
If a discrete-log-breaking or quantum adversary required an old shielded pool to be disabled, a later Recovery Protocol would move eligible value into another shielded pool. ZIP 2005 does not fully specify that protocol.
3. Wallet migration software
A wallet must implement the protocol, obtain consent, schedule transfers, display disclosures, and handle failures. ZIP 318 describes design requirements for migration between shielded pools; it is not a consumer-wallet product.
4. A genuinely post-quantum destination
Only an explicitly deployed Zcash protocol and wallet implementation can establish what “quantum-resistant” means for a particular migration. Orchard support, a seed phrase, or hardware signing alone is not enough.
What ZIP 2005 actually proposes
The official registry lists ZIP 2005, “Ironwood Quantum Recoverability,” as Proposed. Its goal is to change Orchard note construction so that qualifying notes could later be recovered if Orchard had to be disabled after a cryptographic break. The proposal itself states:

That distinction is decisive. A proposed note format is not the same as an activated network rule, and an activated rule would still not be the same as a finished wallet recovery experience.
Why Orchard and Sapling matter
ZIP 2005 concerns qualifying Orchard notes. The proposal says Sapling funds should be migrated to Orchard to benefit from the proposed change. That does not mean every present-day Sapling-to-Orchard transfer automatically creates a quantum-resistant balance: the network must first activate the relevant rules, and the receiving notes must satisfy the final eligibility conditions.
Until those conditions and a supported wallet flow are published, do not assume that moving funds between pools is protective. An improvised transfer can create ordinary privacy and operational risks without providing the intended recovery property.

Before any future migration, determine whether the balance is in Sapling, Orchard, or both. Shielded pools are distinct protocol domains, so a wallet’s total “shielded balance” may conceal which pool contains the notes.
- Open the wallet’s official balance or shielded-pool details screen.
- Record the amount shown for Sapling and the amount shown for Orchard separately, if the wallet exposes that information.
- Export or note the wallet version and account type without exposing your seed or spending keys.
- If the interface does not identify the pool, consult that wallet’s own documentation or support channel; do not infer the pool from an address label alone.
A future migration may support only one pool, one account type, or notes created after a particular activation height. The wallet should state those constraints before asking you to approve a transfer.
What to preserve before a supported flow exists
Protect the seed and recovery data
ZIP 32 describes how Zcash shielded keys are derived from a wallet seed. A correctly stored seed can allow wallet recovery under that key-derivation scheme, but it does not give the resulting funds post-quantum protection. Keep the seed offline, make more than one durable backup, and verify that restoration works in the wallet’s documented recovery process.

Record operational details
- Wallet name and exact version.
- Whether the wallet uses a single account or multiple accounts.
- Which pools contain funds.
- Any viewing-key exports or watch-only setups that you rely on.
- The date and block height of significant deposits, if the wallet provides them.
Never type a seed into a web form, migration site, unsolicited support chat, or message claiming to be an upgrade service. A legitimate wallet flow should operate inside the official application or through instructions published by the wallet and Zcash project.

The following is a verification checklist for the future. It is not evidence that a retail migration is currently available.
- Confirm activation. Check that the Zcash network has activated the relevant protocol and that the wallet version explicitly supports it. A proposal, testnet mention, or roadmap is not activation.
- Confirm eligibility. The wallet should identify your current pool, account, and notes that can participate. It should explain whether Sapling funds must first be moved to Orchard and whether any notes are excluded.
- Read the consent screen. A pool-crossing transfer can reveal the net amount crossing between pools on-chain. The wallet should show what amount will be visible and request explicit approval before funds leave the old pool.
- Choose the documented migration mode. Prefer the wallet’s privacy-preserving flow rather than manually sweeping the entire balance in one transaction. The implementation should explain denominations, scheduling, and any limits.
- Review network privacy. Read whether the wallet broadcasts directly, uses a privacy network, or relies on a server. Without network-layer privacy, a server or observer may correlate a broadcast IP address with the visible pool-crossing event.
- Authorize and monitor. Keep the application open or follow its documented background-processing requirements. Record transaction identifiers and watch for failed, delayed, or partially completed transfers.
- Verify the destination. Confirm the resulting balance and pool inside the official wallet interface. Do not treat an email, webpage, or third-party dashboard as proof that recovery completed.
Why a one-transaction sweep can reveal more
ZIP 318 explains that a transfer between shielded pools reveals the net amount crossing between them on-chain. Sending an entire balance in one operation can therefore expose the amount and timing of the pool crossing, and network metadata may add correlation information.
The specification’s recommended wallet design decomposes a balance into canonical denominations and schedules pool-crossing transfers over time. It also describes shared anchor heights and best-effort background broadcasts to reduce obvious timing correlation. These techniques are privacy design requirements for an implementation, not instructions to recreate manually with separate transactions.
A wallet should explain the trade-off plainly: delaying or splitting transfers may reduce correlation, but it can require the wallet to remain synchronized, keep operating in the background, and handle retries. Users should be able to consent to that behavior and understand what happens if the device is offline.

Shielded transaction contents and network metadata are different privacy layers. Even when transaction values are shielded, a wallet server or network observer may see a broadcast IP address and correlate it with a publicly visible pool-crossing event if no network-level privacy is used.
Tor or another privacy option may be appropriate where the wallet actually supports it, but availability, performance, and legal or network restrictions vary by implementation and region. Do not assume that every wallet offers the same transport choices, that a setting is enabled by default, or that one option is universally available. Read the wallet’s own disclosure before approving the migration.

Project Tachyon is a roadmap, not a migration button
Project Tachyon describes research and development for a proposed shielded pool and a payment-delivery approach using private information retrieval (PIR) and post-quantum key exchange. Its roadmap says mainnet activation depends on community consensus and the applicable ZIP requirements.
That work should not be merged with ZIP 2005. A research roadmap does not establish that a pool is activated, that a wallet supports it, or that users can move funds into it. Treat any announcement as a capability claim that still needs an activation height, wallet version, account compatibility statement, and published recovery instructions.
How to evaluate a future wallet
When named wallets eventually appear, compare documented capabilities rather than marketing labels. The following criteria are the minimum evidence to request:

| On-chain disclosure | How the net amount crossing pools is displayed before approval. |
| Network privacy | Available transport options, server involvement, IP-correlation warnings, and regional limitations. |
| Recovery documentation | A complete restore procedure, failure handling, and explanation of what “quantum-resistant” covers and does not cover. |
| Independent review | Published security review or audit details that identify the reviewed code and version. |
Do not rank products until these claims are verifiable. A wallet that merely supports Zcash, Orchard, a hardware signer, or a seed phrase has not thereby demonstrated quantum-resistant migration support.
Common unsafe shortcuts
“I will generate a new address.”
A new address changes where a transaction may be received; it does not alter the cryptographic assumptions of the existing pool or create a recovery path.
“I will move everything from Sapling to Orchard now.”
The proposal says Sapling funds should migrate to Orchard to benefit from the proposed change, but the final rules and wallet behavior are not established. An ordinary transfer today should not be described as quantum protection.
“A hardware wallet makes it quantum-safe.”
Hardware signing can protect key material from some device threats. It does not implement a new Zcash pool, note format, or recovery protocol unless the complete software and network stack supports those features.
“The first support message offering migration must be legitimate.”
Unsolicited migration offers are a high-risk way to lose funds. Never disclose a seed or approve a transaction from a link supplied through an unexpected message.
Troubleshooting a future migration
The wallet says the pool is unsupported
Do not force the transfer. Confirm the wallet version, network activation, and whether your funds are in Sapling or Orchard. The correct remedy may be waiting for a later wallet release rather than making an intermediate transfer.
The displayed amount differs from your total balance
Check whether the wallet is showing only eligible notes, one account, or one pool. Review pending transactions and transparent balances before approving anything.

The transfer is delayed
Background scheduling may intentionally spread broadcasts over time. Check the wallet’s documented retry and offline behavior, and avoid creating a second manual sweep unless the wallet explicitly instructs you to do so.
You cannot restore the wallet
Stop and preserve the original seed backup. Use only the wallet’s official recovery procedure, verify the network and account settings, and do not send the seed to support personnel. If the seed itself is missing, a migration cannot safely compensate for that loss.
What would make the migration genuinely available
Look for all of these signals together:
- The relevant ZIP moves beyond Proposed status or is otherwise activated by a stated network upgrade.
- The recovery protocol is specified well enough for independent wallet implementations.
- A wallet release names the supported protocol, pool, account type, and eligibility rules.
- The wallet presents consent, amount-disclosure, scheduling, and network-privacy information before signing.
- Recovery and failure procedures are documented, including seed restoration and interrupted transfers.
Until those conditions exist, the accurate answer to “How do I move Zcash to a quantum-resistant wallet?” is: you do not perform the move yet; you prepare your wallet and wait for official, activated support.
