To move to a new Xbox, treat your installations, save data, and settings as three separate jobs. Copy installed games with Network Transfer or a compatible USB drive, or reinstall owned titles from your library. Saves from Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S games sync through the cloud when you use the same Xbox profile. Settings require a fresh check during setup because Microsoft’s available migration guidance does not provide a complete, setting-by-setting list of what transfers automatically.
Set up and update the new console first, keep the old console online, and use the method that fits your situation: Network Transfer is usually fastest when both consoles are together, an external drive is practical when games are already stored on it, and library or disc installation works when the old console is unavailable.

What moves, and what does not
An Xbox game installation is the large collection of files stored on a console or drive. A save is your progress inside that game. Console settings include preferences such as network, display, privacy, accessibility, and controller choices. Xbox handles these categories differently, so moving one does not automatically move the others.
| What you want to move | Best-supported route | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Installed Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S games | Network Transfer between consoles, or a compatible USB external drive | These methods move installation files, not cloud saves or console settings. |
| Owned digital games | Sign in on the new console and use Ready to Install | The title must be supported on the new console and associated with the account you use. |
| Disc-based games | Insert the supported disc and install | The disc remains required to launch the game. Xbox Series S is digital-only. |
| Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S saves | Cloud synchronization after signing in with the same profile | The game must finish syncing before you continue playing. |
| Original Xbox saves | No supported transfer to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S | Backward compatibility does not carry original Xbox save files into those newer console families. |
| Console settings | Follow the new-console setup prompts, then verify preferences manually | A complete automatic-transfer inventory is not provided in the currently available migration guidance. |
The most common mistake is to copy a game and assume its progress traveled with it. Installation files can be moved by cable-free local transfer or USB storage; progress is obtained separately from Xbox cloud synchronization.

Prepare both consoles before transferring anything
Keep the old Xbox available and online
Do not reset, sell, or unplug the old console until you have checked the new one. Turn on the old Xbox, connect it to the internet, and open the games that matter most. This gives the console an opportunity to upload recent Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S progress before you begin. Xbox’s public guidance confirms cloud saves for those console families, but it does not provide a universal, per-game manual “sync now” checklist.
Set up and update the new console first
Start the new Xbox setup, sign in with the same Xbox profile used on the old console, and install the system update before attaching optional accessories. Xbox Wire recommends updating first. The dashboard labels can change after system updates, so install the current update before following menu paths.
Check storage before selecting games
Open the new console’s storage view and note the available internal space. Network Transfer lets you select a destination drive, but a large batch can exceed capacity. Decide whether each title belongs on internal storage, an expansion device, or an external USB drive before starting a long copy.

Gather the items that match your chosen method
- For Network Transfer: both consoles, power, internet access, and the same local network.
- For an external drive: the drive containing the installations, plus enough destination space if you plan to copy games back to internal storage.
- For reinstalling: the owning account for digital titles or the original disc for disc-based titles.
Option 1: Copy games with Network Transfer
Network Transfer copies selected installations over your local network, so you do not have to download every game again. Both Xbox consoles must be connected to the same local network. The source Xbox must allow transfers and remain powered on during the copy.
Enable transfers on the old console
- On the source Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > System > Backup & transfer.
- Choose the option to allow network transfer and enable it.
- Leave the old console powered on and connected to the local network.
Older dashboard versions used a path under Settings > Network > Network transfer. If your labels differ, use the current wording shown on your console rather than forcing an older menu path.
Select the old console on the new one
- On the new Xbox, open Profile & system > Settings > System > Backup & transfer.
- Open Network transfer and look under Local consoles.
- Select the old Xbox when it appears.
- Choose the games you want to copy. Select only titles that fit the destination drive’s available capacity.
- Choose Copy selected, select the destination drive, and start the copy.
Keep both consoles on and avoid changing the source console’s network connection while the transfer runs. You can transfer a smaller batch first if storage or network stability is uncertain.

What Network Transfer does not do
Network Transfer moves installation files. It does not replace signing in with the profile that owns digital licenses, it does not move original Xbox saves to newer console families, and it does not provide a verified setting-by-setting migration. Let the new console synchronize saves separately after you launch each game.

If the old Xbox does not appear
- Confirm that both consoles are connected to the same local network, not merely to the internet through unrelated networks.
- Return to the old console’s Backup & transfer page and verify that network transfer is allowed.
- Leave the old console powered on and signed in while the new console searches.
- Restart both consoles and check for system updates if the Local consoles list remains empty.
Option 2: Carry installations on a USB external drive
An external hard drive or SSD can store and transport game installations and can add capacity to an Xbox. This is useful when the games are already on a compatible drive or when moving both consoles onto the same local network is inconvenient.
Move an existing game drive
- Close running games and safely shut down the source console.
- Disconnect the compatible external drive from the old Xbox.
- Connect the drive to the new Xbox and wait for the console to detect it.
- Open the games and apps library or storage management, select the installations, and choose whether to keep them on the external drive or copy selected titles to internal storage.
- When a title requires internal or faster storage for play, copy it before launching.
The exact behavior depends on the game and console generation. Some installations can remain stored externally, while others may need to be copied to the destination console’s internal storage before they will run. Check current Xbox storage requirements before buying a drive; compatibility and direct playability are not identical for every title.
Understand the boundary of external storage
The drive carries installation files. It is not a container for Xbox cloud saves or a substitute for signing in with the correct profile. Do not erase local data on the old console to “force” a save transfer; save synchronization is a separate cloud process and game-specific recovery actions should be used only when Xbox or the game publisher documents them.
Option 3: Reinstall from your library or disc
Reinstallation is the cleanest route when the old console is unavailable, the local network is slow, or you prefer a fresh installation. It downloads the files again, so it does not save the bandwidth or time that Network Transfer can save.

- Sign in to the new console with the Xbox profile that owns the game.
- Open your games and apps library and find Ready to Install.
- Select supported titles and choose Install.
- Wait for the installation and any required updates to finish before launching.
Owned digital titles appear in Ready to Install when they are supported on that console and linked to the account. Do not assume that every edition, add-on, or game works on every Xbox model; verify compatibility for the specific title.

Disc-based games
- Insert the supported game disc into the new Xbox.
- Allow the console to download and install the game files.
- Keep the disc in the drive whenever you play, because it serves as the license check.
Xbox Series S has no disc drive and plays digital games only. A disc collection therefore cannot be installed directly on Series S unless you also own supported digital licenses.
Digital and disc choices at a glance
| Library type | What you need | What happens after installation |
|---|---|---|
| Digital purchase | The purchasing Xbox account and a supported title | Install from Ready to Install; the account supplies the license. |
| Supported physical disc | The disc and a console with a disc drive | Download and install from the disc; keep the disc inserted to play. |
| Series S target console | A supported digital license | Disc-based ownership alone cannot be used because the console is digital-only. |
Move saves and progress through the cloud
For games created on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, saves are independent of the installation method. Sign in to the new console with the same profile, install or start the game, and allow the synchronization process to complete. Do not quit the game or shut down the console while it reports that saved data is syncing.
Use the same profile
- On the new console, sign in with the exact Xbox account used for the existing progress.
- Install the game by Network Transfer, external drive, library download, or disc.
- Launch the game while connected to the internet.
- When the console asks to synchronize saved data, allow it to finish.
- Confirm that your latest progress, rather than an older local state, appears before continuing to play.
Xbox’s backward-compatibility FAQ states: “Lastly, game saves will not transfer to XBOX One or XBOX Series X|S but once created on XBOX One or XBOX Series X|S, the game saves can transfer to other XBOX One or XBOX Series X|S consoles through the cloud.” In practical terms, original Xbox save files do not move into Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, while saves created on Xbox One or Series X|S can move between those two console families through the cloud.
If a save is missing
- Check that the new console is online and that you used the profile that created the save.
- Wait for the game’s synchronization prompt to finish, then relaunch the game.
- Do not delete local or cloud data unless Xbox or the game publisher gives title-specific instructions; deleting the wrong copy can remove the only usable progress.
- If the game has separate versions for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, confirm that you installed the version associated with your progress and account.
What to do about settings
Follow the new-console setup prompts and then check your preferences manually. The available migration guidance does not expose a complete, verified inventory of which display, network, accessibility, privacy, or controller settings transfer automatically, so do not promise that every preference will appear unchanged.
Use a practical settings checklist
- Reconnect to your home network and verify the console is online.
- Check display resolution, refresh-rate, HDR, and audio choices on the television or monitor you will use.
- Review accessibility options, privacy permissions, family settings, and communication controls.
- Reconnect controllers and accessories, then test their buttons, profiles, and headset audio.
- Open the guide and confirm notifications, power behavior, and storage locations match your preferences.
These checks are a verification routine, not a claim that each item is automatically migrated. Complete them after the system update and before assuming the new console is configured like the old one.

| Method | Choose it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Network Transfer | Both consoles are together on the same local network and you want to avoid downloading installed files again. | The old console must allow transfer, remain powered on, and stay on that network. |
| External drive | Your installations already live on a compatible USB drive or local networking is inconvenient. | Some games may need to be copied to internal storage before play; compatibility varies by title and generation. |
| Reinstall from library | You no longer have the old console or want a fresh download. | You need the owning account and must download the game again. |
| Install from disc | You own a supported physical copy and the new console has a disc drive. | The disc is required to play, and Series S cannot use discs. |
| Cloud save synchronization | You need existing Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S progress on the new console. | It is separate from moving installations and requires the same profile and an online sync. |
Troubleshoot common migration problems
Network Transfer is missing or finds no console
Check that both consoles are on the same local network, enable Allow network transfer on the old console, and keep it powered on. Restart both consoles if the Local consoles list remains empty. Because dashboard wording changes, look under the current Backup & transfer menus rather than relying on an older screenshot.

The copy stops because of storage
Open storage management on the destination, remove or move titles you do not need immediately, and retry with a smaller selection. Choose the correct destination drive during the Copy selected step. If a game requires internal storage, leave enough internal capacity for it instead of filling the drive with titles that cannot run from that location.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA copied game asks for ownership
Copying files does not grant a license. Sign in with the account that bought the digital title, or insert the disc for a physical title. For a Series S, use a supported digital license because there is no disc drive.
The game starts without recent progress
Stop before creating new save data that could complicate recovery. Confirm the profile, connect to the internet, relaunch the game, and allow the cloud synchronization prompt to complete. If the title has multiple console versions, verify that the installed version matches the one associated with the existing save.
The external drive is detected but a game will not run
Move that installation to the new console’s internal storage and try again. The drive can still serve as transport or additional storage, but direct playability depends on the title and console generation.
A disc game will not install on Series S
This is a hardware limitation, not a transfer failure. Series S is digital-only, so you need a supported digital entitlement for that game.
