The safest migration is staged. Export or import what you need, verify messages and attachments on the destination, confirm that everyone has joined any replacement group, and only then leave, uninstall, or erase WhatsApp from the old phone.

What can actually move from WhatsApp?
The result depends on the destination and on the kind of move you mean. Telegram provides a documented import route from WhatsApp. Signal’s documented transfer and backup tools are for moving existing Signal history between compatible devices, not for converting WhatsApp exports into Signal conversations.

WhatsApp’s own export is an archive or sharing function, not a restorable backup. Its Help Center states: Your chat history can’t be re-imported because it’s a text file and not a backup file.
That limitation matters if you plan to export a chat, delete WhatsApp, and later expect to restore the export inside WhatsApp or another app that does not provide an importer.

A migration also does not make the two services synchronize. After a Telegram import, new messages sent in WhatsApp remain in WhatsApp unless people deliberately continue in both places. After a Signal group is rebuilt, its timeline begins with the new Signal conversation; the old WhatsApp timeline remains a separate record.
Before you start
Keep both apps and the old phone available
Update WhatsApp and the destination app first. Do not erase the old phone or delete WhatsApp data until you have checked the destination. WhatsApp gives the same practical advice for its own device migrations: retain the old phone until the transfer is confirmed. That is sensible here because a failed export, missing attachment, or incomplete group move is much easier to correct while the source remains available.
For a group, identify an administrator or another participant who can help confirm that the replacement group is correct. For a private chat, make sure you know exactly which Telegram conversation should receive the import; sending a large export to the wrong destination can be difficult to untangle.

Check storage before including media
An export that includes photos, videos, voice notes, and documents can be substantially larger than a text-only export. Make sure the phone has enough free space for WhatsApp to prepare the export and for Telegram to receive it. If storage is tight, choose Without media and preserve important files separately rather than allowing an export to fail partway through.
Including media is a choice made for each export. A text-only copy cannot later be turned into a complete media-inclusive import, because attachments omitted at export time are not present in the package. Conversely, selecting Include media does not guarantee that every item will arrive if the phone cannot finish creating or sharing the package, so inspect representative files afterward.
Decide what “move” means for your records
- Searchable history in Telegram: use Telegram’s import route.
- A readable record without a new messenger copy: use WhatsApp’s text export, with or without media.
- A fresh, private group conversation in Signal: recreate the group and retain WhatsApp as a read-only archive.
- A replacement phone for an existing Signal account: use Signal’s own Secure Backup or direct device-transfer process, not a WhatsApp export.
Neither route creates a universal, restorable backup that can be opened in every messaging app. Treat an export as a copy for the specific destination or archive you selected. Keep the original source until you have decided that the copy is sufficient.
Move a WhatsApp one-to-one chat to Telegram
Telegram documents importing WhatsApp history on both iOS and Android. The wording of menus can vary slightly by app version, but the operation begins in WhatsApp and ends in the system share menu.

- Start an export. On iOS, open the contact’s information screen and tap Export Chat. On Android, open the chat, tap ⋮, then More > Export Chat.
- Choose media handling. Select Include media when attachments are important and available storage is sufficient. Select Without media for a smaller text-focused import.
- Select Telegram in the share sheet. WhatsApp passes the export to Telegram. If Telegram is not shown, use the share sheet’s app list or save the export first and share it from a location that offers Telegram.
- Choose the Telegram destination. Select the appropriate existing chat or follow Telegram’s prompt for the destination conversation. Confirm the contact name before proceeding.
- Wait for processing to finish. Keep both apps open if the phone indicates that the share or import is still working. Large exports can take longer than a text-only file.
- Verify before changing WhatsApp. Open several older sections of the conversation, check dates, and open representative photos, videos, or documents if you included media.
Telegram’s import route is a destination-specific operation. If you have several WhatsApp chats, repeat the process for each one rather than assuming that exporting one conversation carries over the rest of your account. A WhatsApp export starts with the chat currently open.
How imported dates are displayed
Telegram says imported messages retain their original timestamps, but the imported batch is displayed under the current day. This can make the conversation look as if a large block arrived today even though individual messages still carry their historical times. Check an old message’s details rather than judging the timeline from the day divider alone.

This display behavior is especially important for long-running conversations. Tell other participants that the visible “today” grouping reflects the import event, not the date on which the original message was written. The retained timestamps are the useful reference when you need to establish the sequence of older messages.
What to verify
- Messages from the beginning, middle, and end of the selected export.
- Whether the intended Telegram chat received the import.
- Attachment types that matter to you, especially videos and documents.
- Whether names and surrounding context are understandable after import.
- That Telegram has completed the operation before you archive or remove WhatsApp.
- That the most recent messages you expected are present; an export captures the chat at the time you created it, not future WhatsApp activity.
Move a WhatsApp group to Telegram
Telegram supports importing WhatsApp groups as well as private chats. The export still starts from WhatsApp, so you need access to the group and enough storage for the selected media.
- Open the WhatsApp group. On iOS, open Group Info and tap Export Chat. On Android, open the group, tap ⋮ > More > Export Chat.
- Select Include media or Without media. Include media only when the resulting package is manageable and attachments are needed in Telegram.
- Choose Telegram from the share menu. The share action transfers the export to Telegram rather than creating a general account migration.
- Select the Telegram group destination when Telegram asks where to place the imported history. Check the group name and members before confirming.
- Check the result with other members. Confirm that the right group received the messages and that important participants can find the imported context.
- Announce the switch separately if needed. An imported history does not, by itself, guarantee that every WhatsApp participant has joined or will receive future Telegram messages.
Telegram’s documented import support includes videos and documents. WhatsApp controls whether media is sent at all, so an import cannot contain attachments that were omitted during export or that the app could not include in the package.
For a busy group, consider announcing a short pause while the import is checked. Messages sent in WhatsApp during the changeover are not automatically appended to the Telegram copy. Set a clear cutover time and tell participants where new messages belong.
Use WhatsApp’s export when you need an archive
WhatsApp’s general export procedure is useful when your goal is to save or share a transcript rather than create a live conversation in another app.
- Open the WhatsApp chat or group.
- Choose More options > More > Export chat.
- Select Without media or Include media.
- Choose a share destination or storage location.
- Open the resulting archive while WhatsApp data is still available and confirm that it contains what you expected.
WhatsApp explicitly says the resulting chat history cannot be re-imported because it is a text file, not a backup file. Keep that file as a readable record, not as a promise that WhatsApp or Signal can reconstruct the original conversation from it.

Do not assume that placing the file in a share destination gives it the same protections as an in-app encrypted conversation.
Move WhatsApp chats to Signal
There is no documented WhatsApp-to-Signal history importer in Signal’s current support material. Do not expect a WhatsApp text export, ZIP package, or media folder to appear as a normal Signal conversation. For this use case, moving to Signal means starting a new conversation and preserving the old WhatsApp record separately.
This is not the same as losing the old messages. You can leave WhatsApp installed, keep the old phone available, or save a WhatsApp export for reference. What you cannot do through Signal’s documented tools is insert that transcript into a new Signal thread with its original timeline and participants.

Plan the switch with the people involved
- Tell participants in WhatsApp. Explain that the new Signal conversation starts from a chosen date and that earlier messages will remain in WhatsApp.
- Choose the cutover time. Give people a clear point after which new messages should go to Signal.
- Install and register Signal. Make sure the people who need to participate have working Signal accounts before you close the WhatsApp group.
- Keep WhatsApp available. Treat it as a read-only archive until you have confirmed that the new group works.
- Repeat the announcement in the new Signal conversation. State where the historical record is kept so nobody mistakes the empty opening timeline for missing data.
Recreate a WhatsApp group in Signal
Signal’s documented group workflow creates a new group, sets its name and options, and adds people who use Signal. You can then use an invite link or QR code for members who are not yet in the group.
- Create a new group. In Signal, choose the option to start a group, select contacts or enter phone numbers, and continue.
- Set the group name and permissions. Configure the group options that suit your participants before distributing the invitation.
- Open the group-link settings. In the Signal group settings, choose Group Link and enable the link.
- Choose approval behavior. If you want an administrator to screen entrants, require approval for new members.
- Share the link or QR code in WhatsApp. Members can use either method to join the new Signal group.
- Confirm membership. Check that the important people have joined and that any approval requests have been handled.
- Declare the cutover. Post the date and time from which the Signal group is the active conversation, while leaving the WhatsApp group available as an archive for as long as necessary.
Adding only the people already in your Signal contacts is not enough if some participants have not registered yet. The link or QR code gives those people a path to join, but they still need Signal installed and a working account. If the group has sensitive content, an administrator approval requirement can prevent an unintended person from joining through a forwarded link.
What is not carried into the new Signal group
- The old WhatsApp message timeline is not inserted into Signal.
- WhatsApp participants do not become Signal members automatically.
- Old WhatsApp media is not converted into Signal messages by the documented group-creation flow.
- People who have not installed or registered Signal still need another way to receive the invitation and switch.
- Messages sent in WhatsApp after the cutover are not mirrored into Signal.
Do not confuse WhatsApp migration with Signal phone transfer
Signal does support moving an existing Signal account’s message history to a replacement phone through its own Secure Backups or direct device-transfer options. Those procedures are different from importing WhatsApp data.
For a direct Signal device transfer, Signal says both devices must be available and that the available transfer choices depend on the platforms involved. Signal messages are stored locally; its restoration guidance also notes that Signal Desktop does not support transferring message history to or from another device. If the old device is unavailable, recovery of Signal history can therefore be limited. These constraints apply to Signal-to-Signal moves, not to a WhatsApp-to-Signal conversion.
In practical terms, first identify which history you are trying to preserve. If it was created in WhatsApp, use Telegram’s documented import when you need an in-app transcript, or retain a WhatsApp export/archive. If it was created in Signal and you are changing phones, follow Signal’s device-specific transfer or Secure Backup instructions instead. Choosing the wrong workflow will not create a usable conversion.
Verification checklist before you leave WhatsApp
- Destination: You opened the exact Telegram chat or group, or the correct new Signal group.
- Coverage: You checked messages from different points in the old conversation.
- Media: Important photos, videos, and documents open correctly where media was included.
- People: The required Signal members joined, or Telegram participants know where the active conversation is.
- Dates: You understand Telegram’s current-day display for imported batches and have checked individual timestamps.
- Archive: You retained a WhatsApp copy or export if the old transcript may be needed later.
- Source safety: You have not deleted WhatsApp data until these checks are complete.
- Cutover: Everyone knows the date and time after which messages should be sent only in the destination app.
Common problems and what to do
The export is too large or fails
Retry with Without media, free storage on the phone, and then preserve especially important attachments separately. A text-only export is smaller, but it will not supply the media that was excluded. If the same chat is needed in Telegram with attachments, make sure the phone has enough room before attempting Include media again.
Telegram is not offered in the share menu
Confirm that Telegram is installed and updated, then reopen the share sheet. You can save the export to a shareable location first and choose Telegram from there if the operating system does not show it immediately. Do not delete the WhatsApp conversation while you are still troubleshooting the handoff.
The Telegram import appears under today
This is expected behavior according to Telegram’s import description. Open individual messages or their details to check the retained original timestamps instead of relying only on the date divider.
The wrong Telegram chat received the import
Stop before deleting WhatsApp. Check the destination selection carefully and repeat the export to the intended chat if necessary. Keep the original WhatsApp conversation as the authoritative copy until the correct Telegram destination has been checked.

Some Signal members cannot join
Confirm that they have Signal installed and registered, resend the group link or QR code, and review any administrator approval requests. Keep the WhatsApp group available until the expected participants are present.
The Signal group looks empty
That is normal for a recreated group. Signal does not document a WhatsApp-history importer, so the new conversation begins with messages sent after its creation. Use WhatsApp or a saved export to consult earlier messages.
You deleted WhatsApp too soon
Stop making further changes and check whether a local WhatsApp copy, device backup, or previously saved export remains available. An exported text file is not a restorable WhatsApp backup, and Signal has no documented mechanism to turn it into message history. Recovery may be limited if the only source was deleted and no usable copy remains.
