The reliable way to keep your Spotify music when moving to a lighter desktop client is to preserve the account and playlists first, then reconnect that account or use the client’s supported playlist-sync method. Spotify’s mobile app now includes an import flow powered by Tune My Music: open Your Library, choose Import your music from other apps, authorize the source, select playlists or tracks, and tap Transfer to Spotify. You can then install a lightweight client such as Spotube and verify the imported library.
Playlists, saved tracks and local audio files have documented workflows. Spotify preferences, downloaded cache, queue state, recommendation history and other personalization data do not have a documented general migration path, so plan to recreate those settings manually.

What actually moves to a lightweight client
Signing in with the same Spotify account does not automatically mean every part of the Spotify desktop experience will appear in another app. The documented paths cover playlists, some library items, and local files. They do not establish a universal export for account preferences or playback history.

There is no independently established memory threshold that defines “lightweight.” The figures often quoted for newer clients are vendor or secondary-report claims, not a universal benchmark.

Prepare your account and library before switching
Keep the Spotify account as the source of truth
Do the playlist transfer while you can still see the original service and its library. Use the same Spotify account when you later authorize a desktop client; creating a second account is the easiest way to make an apparently empty library look like a failed transfer.
Make a short verification set
Choose a few playlists that represent your real use: a small playlist, a long playlist, one containing obscure tracks, and one with local audio if you use it. Record the approximate track count and note a handful of songs near the beginning, middle and end. This gives you a practical check after import or synchronization without having to inspect every item.
Separate streaming tracks from local files
Spotify’s local-files feature reads audio stored on the device. Those files are not uploaded as Spotify catalog tracks and are not transferred by a playlist import service. Keep the source folders available on the computer where the replacement app will run, and make sure you have the legal right to store and play the files.

Spotify documents this workflow in its mobile app and says the integration is powered by Tune My Music. Spotify’s newsroom described the feature as rolling out globally in November 2025, but the menu can still vary by market and app version.
- Open the mobile Spotify app and go to Your Library. The documented import entry point is in the library area, not in the desktop settings panel.
- Tap “Import your music from other apps.” If the label is absent, check the app version and market availability before assuming your account is ineligible.
- Select the source service and sign in. The source service may open its own authorization screen.
- Tap Allow when the source asks for access. Review the service name and requested permissions before approving.
- Choose the tracks or playlists to move, then tap “Transfer to Spotify.” Start with the verification set if you want to test matching before transferring a larger library.
- Authenticate with Spotify. The imported items should appear in Your Library when the transfer completes.
Track matching is a catalog operation, not a byte-for-byte copy. A song can be unavailable, region-limited, renamed, or represented by a different version. After the transfer, open each important playlist and look for missing or substituted tracks before relying on it in another client.

If the import menu is missing
- Update the mobile Spotify app and sign out and back in if the interface appears stale.
- Check Your Library again rather than searching desktop Settings; Spotify’s documented path is mobile.
- Availability may depend on your market and app version because the feature was rolled out over time.
- If the menu remains unavailable, retain the original playlists and use a target client’s own supported synchronization process instead of assuming the account has lost its data.
Set up Spotube as the first lightweight desktop option to test
Spotube describes itself as a cross-platform, extensible, open-source music streaming platform. Its product site advertises desktop support, local playback and “Playlist Sync” for importing and synchronizing playlists from popular music services or managing playlists locally. A GitHub project page describes it as a Flutter-based lightweight cross-platform Spotify client and lists current desktop distribution options.
Install the current desktop package
- Open the current Spotube product or project page and select the package for your operating system.
- Use the release’s current installer or package instructions rather than copying an old command from a forum post. Package names, signing requirements and update methods can change.
- Launch Spotube after installation and complete any first-run permissions it requests.
Because Spotube relies on community plugins for music sources, availability and behavior can change when a plugin or upstream service changes. Keep the original Spotify app available until your verification set works in Spotube.
Connect the account or use the supported playlist-sync flow
Use the account connection or playlist-sync option presented by the current Spotube release. The available material does not promise that every Spotify preference is imported, so treat synchronization as a library operation. If the app presents an authorization page, confirm that it is the expected Spotify sign-in flow and read the permission scope before accepting.
Verify playlists and saved tracks
- Open the synchronized playlist that you recorded before switching.
- Compare its approximate track count and check the sample tracks at the beginning, middle and end.
- Play several items, including one less-common track, to distinguish a playlist-entry problem from a playback-source problem.
- Check whether liked songs or other saved-library categories are exposed. Spotube’s playlist-sync description does not guarantee that every library category is mirrored.
- Keep Spotify installed until the checks pass and you have confirmed that local files, if any, are configured separately.
Consider Spotifast if you need a native desktop client
TechRadar reported on October 9, 2026 that Spotifast is a native lightweight desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux that connects to Spotify and imports users’ music. The report says a Spotify Premium subscription is required. During setup, users grant two approvals: access to the library and permission to play music on the computer.
TechRadar attributed a typical memory-use figure of 100–250 MB to Spotifast’s information page. The same report estimated Spotify’s desktop app at 600 MB to more than 1 GB. These are reported claims, not an independent benchmark performed under controlled conditions; memory use varies with operating system, playback state, artwork, extensions and the size of the library.

Choose Spotifast when native desktop packaging and a reported lower memory range matter more than a mature, broadly documented migration path. Choose Spotube when open-source distribution, playlist synchronization and local playback are the priorities. In either case, test before removing Spotify.
Bring local music files into Spotify
Local files use a different workflow from playlist transfer. Spotify scans folders on the computer; it does not turn those files into cloud catalog tracks for every device.
- Open Spotify’s desktop Settings.
- Find Show Local Files and enable it.
- Under Show songs from, turn on the listed folder sources, or choose Add a source to select the folder containing your audio.
- Open Your Library and select Local Files to confirm that the tracks appear.
Use audio you are legally allowed to store and play. If you later move to Spotube or another client, point that application at the same folder through its own local-library controls; do not expect Spotify’s local-files index or playlist references to be copied automatically.
When local tracks appear but do not play
- Confirm that the files still exist at the selected path and that the account running the app has read access.
- Check that the audio format is supported by the client you are using.
- If a playlist contains both catalog tracks and local files, verify which entries are local before comparing counts between applications.
Recreate Spotify settings manually
No source here documents a general settings exporter. Make a short settings checklist while Spotify is configured the way you want, then reproduce only the choices your new client exposes.

This manual step is also a useful privacy check. A lightweight client may expose fewer controls, use a different playback engine or depend on plugins, so matching a Spotify setting by name does not guarantee identical behavior.

Compare the migration risks before committing
Playlist fidelity
The safest sequence is to import into Spotify first, inspect unmatched tracks, and only then synchronize to the desktop client. A target app that advertises playlist sync may still represent unavailable songs differently or omit unsupported playlist types.
Account and plan requirements
Spotify’s import flow requires authentication to the source service and Spotify. Spotifast’s reported workflow specifically requires Spotify Premium and approvals for library access and computer playback. Spotube’s cited product descriptions do not state a comparable Premium requirement, so check the current release’s sign-in screen and terms.
Platform coverage and updates
Spotube advertises desktop, mobile and tablet support. Spotifast was reported for Windows, macOS and Linux. Distribution packages and update procedures are volatile; use the current project instructions rather than relying on an old installer link or command.
Resource and privacy claims
The 100–250 MB Spotifast figure and the 600 MB-to-over-1 GB Spotify estimate come from a vendor information page and a secondary report. They are useful as orientation, not as a promise for your machine. Measure the client during your own playback workload if memory is the reason for switching.

Longevity
Spotube’s community-plugin model can broaden source support but also creates a dependency on changing APIs and plugin maintenance. A native client with fewer layers may feel simpler, yet its import coverage and permission model still need verification. Keep an export or a written list of critical playlists so a client update cannot strand your only copy.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
A playlist imported with missing tracks
Open the playlist in Spotify and identify unavailable, region-limited or alternate-version entries. Replace those entries in Spotify first, then run the target client’s synchronization again. Do not judge the desktop client until the source playlist itself is correct.
The replacement app shows an empty library
Confirm that you authorized the same Spotify account used for the playlists. Sign out and repeat the supported authorization flow if the account was selected incorrectly. For Spotube, check whether the current release expects direct account connection or a separate playlist-sync action.
Playback permission was denied
Spotifast’s reported setup uses separate approvals for library access and playing music on the computer. If either approval is declined, repeat the authorization from the app’s account or connection screen and review the requested scope before accepting.
The playlist is present but local files are absent
Reconfigure local folders on the computer. Spotify’s Local Files index is not a cloud transfer, and another client will not inherit it merely because both applications use the same account.
Memory use is higher than expected
Close duplicate clients, stop unnecessary playback views and observe usage during the same task in each app. The published memory figures are typical or estimated ranges, not guarantees, and should not be treated as a performance certification.
A plugin or package stops working
Check the current project release notes and installation instructions. Avoid unofficial modified builds, and keep Spotify available as a fallback while a plugin or client catches up with a service-side change.
Use a safe migration checklist
- Update the Spotify mobile app and desktop app.
- Record a small verification set of playlists and tracks.
- Import playlists from another streaming service through Your Library › Import your music from other apps, then authorize the source and Spotify.
- Inspect unmatched tracks in Spotify.
- Install the current Spotube package, or evaluate Spotifast if you have Premium and accept its two approval scopes.
- Connect the same Spotify account or run the target client’s supported playlist-sync flow.
- Compare playlist counts and sample tracks.
- Recreate playback, quality, notification, appearance and privacy choices manually.
- Configure local folders separately and verify Local Files.
- Keep the original Spotify installation until cloud playlists, saved items and local playback all work as expected.
Bottom line
Move the library in two stages: use Spotify’s documented Tune My Music import flow for playlists arriving from another service, then connect a lightweight desktop client and verify representative playlists. Spotube is the strongest documented first option because it advertises playlist synchronization, local playlist management, cross-platform support and local playback. Spotifast is an emerging native alternative for Windows, macOS and Linux, but its reported Premium requirement, permission scopes and unverified import coverage deserve a test before you commit. Treat preferences, offline downloads, queue state and recommendation history as manual recreation tasks, and configure local audio folders independently on the new computer.
