Xbox saves can move to a Windows PC only when the specific game supports Xbox Play Anywhere or another documented Xbox-to-PC cross-save system. There is no universal Xbox-to-PS4 or Xbox-to-PS5 import. A PlayStation can continue an Xbox player’s progress only when that particular game and its publisher provide cross-progression.
In every supported case, the game—not a USB drive or a console setting—determines whether the save is readable on the destination. The sections below show how to verify support, complete a safe Xbox-to-PC sync, identify the limited Xbox-to-PlayStation options, and recover from common synchronization failures.

What actually transfers between Xbox, Windows PC and PlayStation?
Xbox save transfer is a title-level feature, not a universal console feature. Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere program allows participating digital games to share both entitlement and cloud-save progress between an Xbox console and a Windows PC. The game’s store listing must display the Xbox Play Anywhere designation, or the publisher must document an equivalent Xbox-PC cross-save system.

Microsoft describes Game Saves as keeping progress available when users sign in on supported devices. That availability is conditional: the game must use the service and the destination edition must be one of the supported versions.
How Xbox cloud saves work
When you play while connected to Xbox services, the console keeps a local save and synchronizes it with the cloud. Xbox compares the local and cloud versions, including their timestamps, and uploads newer local data. The cloud copy is then available to a compatible device after you sign in.
This is synchronization rather than a manual file export. You normally do not browse to a save folder, copy a file to a drive or choose an Xbox save from a file picker. The game and Xbox services handle the save data in the background. If both the local and cloud copies changed, Xbox can show a conflict dialog and ask which state to keep.

- An offline session can leave a newer local save that has not reached the cloud.
- Launching the game on another device before synchronization completes can expose an older cloud state.
- Choosing a conflict option is potentially destructive; select the copy that contains the progress you want, not simply the first option.
Move an Xbox save to a Windows PC
Use this procedure for an Xbox Play Anywhere game or another title whose publisher explicitly promises Xbox-to-Windows cross-save. It applies to the supported digital game and its supported PC edition, not automatically to every PC release with the same name.
1. Identify the exact game and edition
- Open the game’s Xbox or Microsoft Store listing.
- Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere icon or wording that says progress is shared between Xbox and Windows PC.
- Check whether the listing distinguishes a Windows edition, a PC storefront or a special edition. A similarly named PC release may use a separate save format.
- Read the publisher’s requirements for regions, account linking, online services and minimum PC specifications before installing.
Play Anywhere is title-specific. Do not infer support from the fact that a game is published by Microsoft, appears on both platforms or supports cross-play. Cross-play lets players meet in the same session; cross-save or cross-progression is the feature that carries progress.

2. Put the Xbox online and finish the upload
- Connect the Xbox to the internet and sign in to the account that owns and plays the game.
- Start the game and verify that your newest progress is visible.
- Exit the game normally rather than shutting down during a save operation.
- Leave the console online for a short period so Xbox can synchronize the local save to the cloud. If the game displays a saving or syncing indicator, wait until it disappears.
There is no universal percentage counter for every title. The practical test is to close the game while online, wait, and avoid making additional offline changes before starting the PC copy.
3. Install the supported Windows version
- On the Windows PC, install the edition identified in the game’s listing or publisher documentation.
- Meet the publisher’s stated hardware, operating-system and storage requirements.
- Sign in to the Microsoft/Xbox account associated with the Xbox gamertag that made the save.
- Launch the game while connected to the internet and allow its first-run account and cloud checks to complete.
For Play Anywhere titles, the progress is associated with the gamertag. Signing in with a family member’s account, a second Microsoft account or a newly created PC profile can make the game appear to have no save even though the Xbox copy is intact.

Start the game and wait at the title screen or synchronization prompt. The Windows edition should retrieve the cloud state automatically. Some games show a message while downloading; others load the save after the account check without a visible prompt. Do not force-close the game during this first synchronization.
5. Resolve a save conflict carefully
If the PC reports that local and cloud data differ, read the dates, device names or progress descriptions shown in the dialog. Choose the copy containing the desired progress. The cloud option may be newer than the PC’s first-run local placeholder, while an offline Xbox session may have created a newer local save that has not uploaded yet.
When the dialog does not clearly identify the versions, stop rather than guessing. Close the game, return to the Xbox, connect it to the internet and confirm the intended progress. Then repeat the launch on PC. Selecting an incorrect overwrite option can make the unwanted state the synchronized copy.

Why an Xbox save may not appear on PC
The game does not support Play Anywhere
A console save is not guaranteed to match a PC save. If the store listing has no Play Anywhere designation and the publisher does not document Xbox-PC cross-save, the PC version may use an independent save system. In that case, an Xbox cloud save is not a transferable file.
You installed the wrong edition
Different generations, deluxe editions, remasters and separate PC storefront versions can have different save systems. Verify the exact product name and edition. A shared entitlement does not prove that every release shares progress.
The accounts do not match
Check the gamertag shown on Xbox and the Microsoft/Xbox account used on Windows. If the title requires a separate publisher account, sign in to the same publisher account on both platforms and follow its linking rules.
The Xbox was offline
A save made offline can remain only on the console until the device reconnects and synchronizes. Put the Xbox online, launch the game, confirm the latest progress, close it normally and wait before starting the PC version.
A conflict was resolved with the wrong copy
If you selected an older cloud state, the game may now synchronize that state to the PC. Stop playing on both devices, check whether the game or publisher offers a recovery slot, and contact the publisher’s support team before creating more saves. Do not assume that reinstalling the game will restore an overwritten cloud state.

Can you move an Xbox save to PS5 or PS4?
There is no Xbox setting that exports a save directly into PlayStation storage. PlayStation’s documented save workflow concerns PlayStation saves and PlayStation online storage; it does not describe importing Xbox cloud data.
The only supported Xbox-to-PlayStation route is game-specific cross-progression. In that arrangement, the publisher stores progression on its own account servers or provides a documented migration process. The exact game must list both Xbox and PlayStation among the supported platforms.
How to check for a supported cross-progression route
- Open the game publisher’s official support page for the exact title.
- Search for “cross-progression,” “cross-save,” “linked accounts” or “transfer progress.” Do not rely on a page that discusses only cross-play.
- Confirm that Xbox, PS4 or PS5, and your particular edition are included.
- Read account-linking instructions, including whether one publisher account can be linked to only one Xbox or PlayStation account.
- Check migration deadlines, region restrictions, platform-specific currencies, downloadable content and one-time transfer limits.
- On PlayStation, install the supported edition, sign in to the same publisher account and follow the game’s activation or migration prompt.
Some games may carry character level, inventory or campaign progress while excluding platform purchases, premium currency, trophies or achievements. The publisher’s documentation determines what crosses over. If the title has no explicit Xbox-and-PlayStation statement, treat the save as incompatible.

PlayStation online storage can move a PlayStation save between supported PlayStation devices, but it is not an Xbox conversion tool. PlayStation also distinguishes streamed and downloaded games: saved data is not automatically transferred between those types. You must upload the compatible PlayStation save and download it to the destination.

Upload a downloaded PS4 game save
- On the PlayStation console, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4).
- Choose Upload or Delete from Console Storage.
- Select Upload to Cloud Storage and choose the game’s save.
- Wait for the upload to complete before turning off the console.
Download the save on the destination
- On the destination PlayStation, open the same saved-data area.
- Choose Download or Delete from Cloud Storage.
- Select the game and the desired save, then download it to console storage.
- Launch the game and verify the expected progress before making new saves.
Menu labels vary between PS4 and PS5 and between downloaded and streamed game types. A PlayStation Plus subscription may be required for online storage under PlayStation’s current rules. This workflow transfers PlayStation-format data; it does not make an Xbox cloud save readable by the console.

Troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the destination: distinguish Windows PC from PS4 and PS5, and identify the exact game edition.
- Verify support: look for the Play Anywhere icon or an official publisher statement that names your source and destination platforms.
- Check accounts: use the same Microsoft/Xbox account for Xbox-to-PC, and the same linked publisher account where cross-progression is required.
- Synchronize first: reconnect the Xbox, open the game, confirm the latest progress, close it normally and wait for cloud synchronization.
- Read conflict dialogs: compare dates and progress before choosing local or cloud data.
- Check services: an outage, maintenance window or account-linking error can prevent a supported save from appearing.
- Check network and storage: keep both devices online and ensure the PC has enough space for the game and its required services.
- Do not overwrite blindly: avoid playing on several devices while a conflict is unresolved.
- For PlayStation: use the game’s documented account-linking route or PlayStation’s own online-storage workflow for PlayStation saves; an Xbox cloud save is not automatically readable.
- Skip the hardware purchase: a USB drive, cable or generic transfer application is not a substitute for game-level support.
What to do before changing platforms
- Record the game title, edition, platform storefront and account used.
- Take a screenshot of the current in-game progress so you can recognize the correct copy during a conflict.
- Finish pending missions or save at a safe checkpoint while online.
- Close the game and wait for synchronization before installing or launching the destination version.
- Read the publisher’s rules for linked accounts, region changes, DLC and premium currency.
- Keep the original Xbox save untouched until the destination has loaded and verified the expected progress.
Bottom line for each destination
For Windows PC, check for Xbox Play Anywhere or an equivalent documented Xbox-PC cross-save feature, synchronize the Xbox while online, install the supported edition and sign in with the same gamertag. For PS4 or PS5, assume that direct transfer is unavailable unless the game publisher explicitly provides Xbox-to-PlayStation cross-progression. PlayStation cloud storage can move PlayStation saves between supported PlayStation devices, but it cannot convert an Xbox save. No universal USB, cable or save utility bypasses those game-specific rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will deleting the Xbox game delete the cloud save?
Uninstalling a game normally removes its local installation, not the Xbox cloud save. Do not delete saved data from the console or choose an overwrite option until the intended cloud copy has synchronized and been verified.
Does Xbox Game Pass automatically make every save available on PC?
No. The game must support Xbox Play Anywhere or another documented Xbox-PC cross-save system, and the Windows edition must use the same Microsoft/Xbox account. A subscription or shared game access does not by itself convert an unsupported save.
Can I use a PC save editor to create a PlayStation save?
There is no supported universal conversion process. Save formats, encryption and account ownership vary by game, and editing may corrupt data or violate the game’s rules. Use only a publisher-documented cross-progression or migration method.
What if my Xbox and PlayStation accounts use different email addresses?
Follow the game publisher’s account-linking rules. The relevant requirement is usually the same linked publisher account, not necessarily identical email addresses, but some games restrict relinking or allow only one platform account per publisher account.
