Smart Switch can bring over contacts, photos, videos, messages, compatible app matches, settings and other supported data. Choose the right transfer method first
Galaxy Z Fold models use Samsung Smart Switch for migration from iOS. You can transfer directly between the two phones, use a wireless QR-based connection, or import compatible information from iCloud. The choice affects how much data can move in one session and what preparation is required.

If the iPhone contains years of photos, many videos, a large message history, or WhatsApp chats you want to preserve, start with the wired method. Wireless and iCloud options are useful fallbacks, not reasons to wipe the old phone before checking the result.

Prepare both phones before opening Smart Switch
Identify the iPhone connector
Look at the port on the iPhone. Lightning models need a Lightning-to-USB-C cable. iPhones with a USB-C port need a USB-C-to-USB-C cable. The Galaxy Z Fold uses USB-C. A cable that only carries power will not establish the data connection, so use a certified, data-capable cable.
Charge, update and unlock
- Charge both phones before starting. Keep chargers nearby in case the transfer runs longer than expected.
- Install available system updates on both devices. Updated software reduces avoidable connection and compatibility problems.
- Keep the iPhone unlocked during the connection and while Smart Switch is reading it. If the iPhone asks whether to trust the connected device, approve the prompt.
- Keep both screens awake where possible. Auto-lock can interrupt a wireless session and can make a wired session appear stalled.
Make a safety backup
Create a current iPhone backup before moving anything. Confirm that you can sign in to the Apple account used for iCloud, including access to its verification method. A backup gives you a recovery point if a transfer is interrupted, while the original iPhone remains the authoritative copy until you finish checking the Fold.
Plan for items that do not migrate automatically
Write down any accounts that use passwords, passkeys or two-factor authentication. Smart Switch does not transfer passwords or Apple Keychain data. Apple-owned apps such as Apple Music must be downloaded again on Android, and individual apps may require a fresh sign-in or may not have an Android equivalent. Plan time for these manual steps instead of treating the Smart Switch completion screen as proof that every account is ready.

A cable is the preferred route for a substantial move because it avoids uploading and downloading your entire library and is the route Samsung specifies for WhatsApp data. Keep the iPhone available until WhatsApp and all other checks are complete.

- Open Smart Switch on the Fold. During initial setup, follow the data-transfer prompt. On an already configured Fold, open Settings, go to Accounts and backup, and select Smart Switch (the exact placement can vary slightly by software version).
- Set the Fold to receive. Choose Receive data, then choose iPhone/iPad.
- Connect the phones. Attach the correct Lightning-to-USB-C or USB-C-to-USB-C cable. Use the iPhone’s native port and the Fold’s USB-C port; do not add an unpowered hub or a charge-only adapter.
- Approve the iPhone prompts. Unlock the iPhone and accept any trust or accessory permission request. If no prompt appears, disconnect, unlock the iPhone, reconnect, and try again.
- Let Smart Switch scan. The Fold will identify categories it can read. The scan can take time when the iPhone contains a large library; do not disconnect simply because the first screen takes a while.
- Select the categories. Review the available choices for contacts, photos, videos, messages, compatible app matches, settings and other supported data. Clear anything you do not want on the Fold, then continue.
- Start the transfer. Keep the phones connected and unlocked as requested. The Fold displays an estimate on the device, but there is no universal transfer duration: the result depends on the amount and type of data, cable connection and device conditions.
- Run the WhatsApp step. When Smart Switch offers a WhatsApp tile, select it and follow the on-screen instructions. Samsung’s iPhone-to-Samsung procedure requires a cable for WhatsApp, so do not assume that a completed wireless or iCloud import has moved those chats.
- Finish setup and allow downloads. Compatible app matches may be offered for installation. Install them from the Android app store, then open the important ones and sign in individually.
Use Smart Switch wirelessly when a cable is unavailable
Smart Switch also documents a wireless phone-to-phone option. It is convenient when the correct cable is not available, but it can expose fewer compatible categories and adds a wireless setup step. It is not the method to rely on for WhatsApp migration.
- On the Fold, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Smart Switch.
- Choose Receive data, select iPhone/iPad, and choose the wireless option when Smart Switch presents the connection choices.
- Use the iPhone’s camera or the method shown by Smart Switch to scan the QR code. Keep both phones on the same nearby Wi-Fi environment and leave the iPhone unlocked.
- Review the categories Smart Switch can discover wirelessly. Select the items you want and start the transfer.
- Keep both devices close, awake and charging if necessary until Smart Switch reports completion. If the connection drops, reopen Smart Switch on the Fold and repeat the wireless pairing rather than deleting the iPhone’s data.
After a wireless move, use the verification checklist below and perform WhatsApp separately with a cable before retiring the iPhone.
Import compatible data from iCloud
iCloud import is useful when the phones cannot be connected directly. The Fold signs in to the Apple account, retrieves the categories Smart Switch supports, and downloads them. It does not create a complete image of the iPhone, and it does not bypass the separate cable requirement for WhatsApp.
- Open Smart Switch on the Fold from Settings > Accounts and backup > Smart Switch.
- Choose Receive data, select iPhone/iPad, then choose Get data from iCloud.
- Enter the Apple account credentials used for the iPhone’s iCloud data.
- Approve the verification code using a trusted Apple device or phone number. If you cannot receive the code, stop and recover account access before proceeding; repeated failed sign-ins will not make the import work.
- Review the compatible categories Smart Switch finds in iCloud and select the data to download.
- Keep the Fold connected to a reliable internet connection and power while the download runs. Large photo and video libraries can take substantial time because the data must be retrieved from the cloud.
- When the import finishes, check the Fold against the iPhone. Use a direct cable transfer for WhatsApp while the iPhone is still available.
What Smart Switch moves—and what still needs manual work
The following distinctions matter more than the completion animation. A category can transfer while individual apps or accounts still require action.

Verify the Fold before erasing the iPhone
Use a deliberate, item-by-item check. Do not rely only on the number of files shown by Smart Switch.
- Contacts: search for several people, including contacts with multiple numbers, email addresses and notes.
- Photos and videos: compare the oldest and newest dates, open several albums, and play longer videos with sound.
- Messages: inspect recent conversations and older threads, including any conversation you may need for work or legal records.
- Files: open downloaded documents and other non-photo files in their destination apps.
- WhatsApp: open chats, media and group conversations on the Fold. Send a test message only after the imported history is visible.
- Accounts: sign in to email, banking, work and social apps. Confirm that critical services recognize the Fold as an approved device.
- Authenticators: generate a test two-factor code for every important service. Keep backup codes accessible.
- Mobile service: place a call, send a text and test mobile data. If you use an eSIM, confirm that the line is active on the Fold before removing the iPhone from your account.
- Cloud libraries: check that the photo, file and music services you use are syncing to the intended account rather than an empty or newly created one.
Keep the iPhone powered on and unchanged until these checks pass. Afterward, make a fresh backup of the Fold, sign out of accounts on the old iPhone, remove its cellular plan, and erase it only when you are certain no required data or authentication method remains there.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The Fold does not detect the iPhone
- Confirm that the cable matches the iPhone port: Lightning-to-USB-C for Lightning iPhones or USB-C-to-USB-C for USB-C iPhones.
- Replace a charge-only or damaged cable with a certified data cable.
- Unlock the iPhone, accept its trust prompt, and reconnect directly to the Fold without a hub.
- Restart both phones, reopen Smart Switch, and select Receive data > iPhone/iPad again.
The transfer stops or appears frozen
- Keep both screens awake and phones charged. A sleeping iPhone or depleted battery can interrupt the session.
- Do not disconnect immediately during a large scan. If the progress does not change for an extended period, cancel from Smart Switch, restart both phones and retry with only the essential categories first.
- Check the cable and ports for looseness or debris. A stable physical connection is required for a wired transfer.
Some apps or app data are missing
Smart Switch may offer only an Android app match, not the iOS app itself, and developers control whether account data can be restored on another platform. Install the Android version, sign in with the original account, and use that app’s own export, cloud restore or migration feature. Do not assume that reinstalling an app recreates local-only data.
WhatsApp chats are not present
Return to the iPhone while it still contains the chats. Connect the phones by cable, open Smart Switch, select the WhatsApp tile when it appears, and follow every prompt. A wireless or iCloud Smart Switch run does not replace this cable-based step.

The iCloud option fails at verification
Check that the Apple account is the one that owns the iPhone’s iCloud data and that you can receive its verification code. Complete account recovery or verification on Apple’s side first, then restart the iCloud import. Without successful sign-in, the Fold cannot retrieve the selected categories.

For most people, this sequence minimizes rework:
- Back up the iPhone and confirm Apple account access.
- Charge and update both phones; identify the iPhone connector.
- Run a wired Smart Switch transfer and include the categories you actually need.
- Complete the WhatsApp tile immediately while the cable is connected.
- Install compatible app matches and manually recreate passwords, passkeys and authenticator access.
- Verify contacts, media, messages, files, accounts and mobile service on the Fold.
- Only after verification, sign out and erase the iPhone for return, resale or recycling.
This order separates data copying from account recovery. It also preserves the iPhone as a fallback if a service requires its original app or authentication token.
Questions to answer before you start
Can I transfer everything in one click?
No. Smart Switch can move many major categories, but passwords, Apple Keychain data, Apple-only apps and some app-specific content require separate action. Treat the transfer as the first stage of migration, not the final account setup.

Do I need a special cable for a Lightning iPhone?
You need a data-capable Lightning-to-USB-C cable. USB-C-to-USB-C is the correct direct cable when the iPhone itself has USB-C. In both cases, the cable must carry data, not only power.

Can I use iCloud instead of connecting the phones?
Yes. In Smart Switch choose Receive data > iPhone/iPad > Get data from iCloud, sign in, approve the verification code and select compatible categories. This does not remove the cable requirement for WhatsApp.
Will Smart Switch erase my iPhone?
No. The iPhone remains intact after Smart Switch. Erasing is a separate action you should take only after verifying the Fold and moving authentication and cellular service.
How long will the transfer take?
The Fold shows an estimate for the particular transfer. There is no universal duration because the amount and type of data, connection method and device conditions vary. Do not schedule the move around an unverified time promise.
