The reliable way to move a Character.AI character is to export your account data, inspect the archive, then rebuild the character in the destination chatbot. There is no documented universal import that transfers every character field, lore rule, and conversation into any service. Treat the job as an export-and-rebuild project, and keep chat history as a separate migration.
Character.AI says a data export can take 3–4 weeks to prepare and that the emailed download link remains valid for 7 days. Request it before you are ready to switch, download it promptly, and do not assume the archive contains every field you remember creating.

What actually moves between services
A character is more than a name and a paragraph of description. Its behavior usually comes from several pieces that different chatbots label differently. Make a list of these parts before choosing a destination.

These pieces are not interchangeable. A lore file supplies facts; it does not automatically enforce a speaking style. A character prompt establishes behavior; it does not recreate the hidden context of an old conversation. Plan to move them separately.

Decide what you are allowed to reuse
Start with characters you created yourself. Public characters may belong to another creator, and an export does not grant permission to republish or redistribute their definitions. If you want to preserve a public character for private use, check the creator’s stated terms and the destination service’s rules.
Make an inventory
- List every character you want to keep.
- Record associated Lorebooks and any custom prompt text.
- Mark conversations that contain important plot, relationship or world-state information.
- Note images, attachments or other media you may need to save separately.
- Separate your own writing from text copied from another creator.
This inventory prevents a common mistake: rebuilding a character while forgetting the lore or a particular chat that supplied its continuity.
Keep two copies of the original
When the archive arrives, save the untouched download and make a separate working copy. Edit only the working copy. Keep the original in a location you control, because the export link expires and the platform does not promise that you can request an identical archive on demand.
Request a Character.AI data export
The current Character.AI Help Center gives different menu paths for the website and mobile app.
On the website
- Sign in to Character.AI.
- Open Profile.
- Select Profile Settings.
- Open Account.
- Choose Manage Account & Data.
- Select Export Data and submit the request.
In the mobile app
- Open your profile.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Legal & Privacy.
- Tap Export Data and submit the request.
Character.AI states that processing may take 3–4 weeks. When processing finishes, it emails a download link that is valid for 7 days. Check the email address attached to the account, including spam and filtered folders, and download the archive during that window. Starting the request on the day you plan to leave is likely to create a long gap.
The export help article does not publish a complete file manifest. It is therefore not safe to promise that every character definition, hidden setting or conversation will be present. Use the archive as the first source of material, then fill gaps from characters and chats you can still open in Character.AI.
Inspect the archive instead of assuming its contents
After downloading, copy the archive to your working area and inspect the file names, formats and dates. Look for character text, conversation records and lore-related files, but do not treat a missing, unfamiliar or empty-looking file as proof that the data never existed. Some content may use platform-specific names or structures.

A practical inspection sequence
- Record the archive’s total size and the names of its top-level folders.
- Open text-based files in a plain-text editor so you can see the original characters and prompts without formatting changes.
- Search for each character’s name, distinctive greeting line and a unique lore term.
- For each match, save a readable copy in your inventory: identity, definition, scenario, greeting, examples, lore and chat transcript.
- Compare the recovered material with what you can still view in Character.AI and note omissions.
If a definition or chat is absent, manually copy the material while you still have access, or recreate it from your notes. Do not fill an unknown field with invented text and then assume it came from the export.
Move Lorebooks with the supported import path
Character.AI documents a specific Lorebook import feature. The guide describes Lorebooks as beta and says the feature is available to c.ai+ subscribers. It accepts pasted text or a plain-text or JSON file up to 10 MB.
For JSON, the documented mapping recognizes an entry’s title, keywords and content. The guide says an entry may use up to eight keywords. Pattern-based keyword rules, secondary conditions, trigger chances, timing and ordering are not carried across by that mapping. Those behaviors must be recreated manually, if the destination supports them.
Prepare the lore
- Split the world information into clear entries rather than one very large block.
- Give every entry a descriptive title.
- Add the names, aliases and terms that should activate the entry as keywords.
- Keep each entry within the destination’s size and keyword limits.
- Remove platform-specific trigger syntax that the destination cannot interpret.
Import and verify
- Open the destination’s Lorebook or knowledge import control.
- Choose the plain-text or JSON file, or paste the prepared text.
- Review every imported entry for missing titles, keywords or content.
- Add keywords where none were recognized.
- Correct entries that exceed the platform’s limits.
- Ask the new chatbot a question that requires each important fact, then adjust keywords if the relevant entry is not recalled.
This is a lore transfer, not a complete character or chat transfer. A successful Lorebook import will not recreate the original greeting, personality definition or previous conversation.
Rebuild the character in the new chatbot
Translate the material into the destination’s actual fields instead of pasting one giant block into whichever box is available. Use this mapping as a starting point:

Character-card applications
An application with explicit character-card fields gives you separate places for identity, description, personality, scenario, greeting and example dialogue. SillyTavern’s documentation describes character import and export, prompt components and a CAI Tools browser-extension route for importing Character.AI chats and bots. In that workflow, use the card fields for behavior and the application’s lore or author-note features for world facts.
Because the extension is maintained outside Character.AI, treat it as a third-party tool rather than an official migration feature. Check its current compatibility, read the permissions it requests and obtain it from a source you trust. A browser extension that worked previously may stop working after either service changes its interface.

Managed chatbot builders
A managed builder that supports custom instructions and knowledge files can also host a rebuilt character. Put behavior, role and boundaries in its instruction field; upload lore as reference files; and place example dialogue where the builder supports examples. Creation, sharing and publishing can depend on your account plan, workspace policy and administrator permissions.

Product roadmaps change. The current help material for GPT-style builders describes a planned retirement or migration timeline for GPTs in some workspaces. Confirm that you can create, edit and continue using the destination before investing time in a large cast of characters.
Use the SillyTavern third-party route carefully
If preserving a Character.AI chat or bot through an automated route is your priority, SillyTavern’s chat-file documentation points to the CAI Tools browser extension. This can reduce manual copying, but it does not make the process universal or permanent.
- Install the extension only after checking its current compatibility and permissions.
- Use it to export or import the supported Character.AI material into SillyTavern.
- Open the resulting character card and inspect every field rather than trusting the conversion.
- Compare the greeting, definition, examples and lore with your original inventory.
- Save a clean character export from SillyTavern so you have a destination-side backup.
SillyTavern also documents exporting chats as plain text or as a re-importable file format, plus character-file import and export. Compatibility depends on the exact format and the tools involved; an imported file may still require cleanup.
Keep conversation history separate from the character
A character definition does not contain the hidden state of an old conversation. If the story must continue, preserve the transcript separately and give the new chatbot a concise, curated recap.
For a short chat
Copy the important turns into a recap containing the setting, relationships, promises, unresolved questions and current scene. Include names exactly as they appear in the character and lore files.
For a long-running story
- Keep the full transcript as an archive.
- Create a shorter continuity document with established facts and chronology.
- Mark which facts are certain, which are character beliefs and which plot threads remain open.
- Paste or upload only the recap needed for the next scene.
- Keep updating the recap instead of sending the entire transcript every time.
When a destination supports chat-file import, use its documented format and then verify the first few exchanges. Do not assume a transcript import also updates the character card or lorebook.

Test the rebuilt character before relying on it
No documented tool guarantees identical responses to Character.AI, and there is no published migration-success rate. Test behavior deliberately rather than judging the first reply.

When a test fails, change one component at a time. Move factual material out of behavior instructions and into lore, shorten contradictory rules, add a missing example exchange, or rewrite the recap. Retest the same prompt after each change so you can identify the cause.

Different services solve different parts of migration. Compare the capabilities that affect your material:

These are workflow distinctions, not a ranking. Pick the option that matches whether you value editable character cards, managed access, local control, chat portability or minimal setup.
Handle privacy and account settings separately
Exporting data, opting out of model improvement and deleting an account are different actions. Character.AI’s model-settings guidance describes an opt-out path for users in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom. It says new content will not be used for model training after opting out, while some data may still be used to improve other aspects of the service. The setting does not export or erase your data.
Before uploading an archive, transcript or lore file elsewhere, remove secrets, personal identifiers and private details you do not need. Check the destination’s retention, sharing and training controls, especially if you are using a shared workspace or a browser extension.
Common failure modes and fixes
The export email never arrives
- Confirm that the request was submitted from the correct account.
- Check spam, promotions and filtered folders.
- Remember that the stated preparation time is 3–4 weeks, not same-day delivery.
- If the link arrives, download immediately because it expires after 7 days.
The archive does not contain a character field
The export guide does not list every file, so do not infer completeness from the archive. Copy the missing definition, greeting or examples from the character page or your own notes, and label the reconstructed portion in your working inventory.
Lore imports but the bot ignores it
Check the entry title, keywords, content and size. Add up to the documented eight keywords where appropriate, use the destination’s trigger syntax, and test with the exact names and aliases that appear in the conversation.
The new bot sounds generic
Replace broad personality adjectives with observable rules and add representative exchanges. Preserve the greeting and scenario, then test a routine prompt and a boundary-sensitive prompt separately.
The story contradicts itself
Keep the character definition, lore and continuity recap distinct. Remove duplicate or conflicting facts, identify the current scene in the recap and avoid sending the entire unedited transcript when a concise state summary is sufficient.

An importer stops working
Third-party extensions and destination formats can change. Disable the extension if its permissions no longer make sense, preserve your original archive, and fall back to manual extraction rather than granting broader access just to complete the transfer.
What a successful migration can and cannot promise
You can preserve the written ingredients that create a character’s identity: instructions, examples, scenario, greeting and lore. You can also preserve a conversation as a transcript or compatible chat file when the destination supports it.
You cannot reasonably promise a one-click universal transfer, complete archive coverage, identical replies or automatic restoration of hidden conversation memory. Character.AI’s documented workflows cover account export and Lorebook import, not a native button that sends complete characters and chats to arbitrary third-party chatbots.
An older Character.AI notice about manually moving chats from a retired beta site concerned an internal move within Character.AI. It was not an external migration method. Likewise, a Character.AI Help Center article dated May 2, 2023 stated, “We don’t currently have an API.” That dated statement should not be treated as proof of the platform’s status in 2026; rely on current documentation for any API decision.

Migration checklist
- Inventory characters, Lorebooks, important chats, media and custom prompts.
- Confirm that you have permission to reuse each character’s material.
- Request the export through the current website or app path.
- Plan for the stated 3–4 week processing period.
- Download the emailed archive within its 7-day validity window.
- Keep an untouched backup and inspect the actual files.
- Extract identity, definition, scenario, greeting, examples, lore and chat history into separate notes.
- Import Lorebooks within the documented 10 MB and eight-keyword limits, then verify every entry.
- Rebuild the character in the destination’s real instruction, card and knowledge fields.
- Use the third-party SillyTavern route only after checking current extension compatibility and permissions.
- Preserve long conversations as files and create concise continuity recaps.
- Run greeting, routine, boundary, lore and continuity tests before relying on the new chatbot.
- Review privacy, retention, sharing and account-access settings on both services.
