How to Move Your Apps and Data to a Samsung Foldable Phone

The safest way to move to a Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip is Samsung Smart Switch, run from the new phone’s setup process whenever possible. It can copy much of an Android phone’s content and settings, or core personal data from an iPhone or iPad. Choose wireless transfer for convenience, or a USB-C data cable for a direct connection. Keep the old phone untouched until you have checked photos, messages, contacts, documents, two-factor authenticators and app access.

What Smart Switch moves to a Samsung foldable

Smart Switch is Samsung’s supported migration app for moving contacts, photos, videos, messages, apps, settings and other content to a new Galaxy device. The exact result depends on the old phone’s platform, the data categories selected and whether an app or account permits migration.

From an Android or Galaxy phone

Samsung lists these categories for Android-to-Galaxy transfers:

  • Contacts
  • Schedule and calendar entries
  • Messages
  • Photos and videos
  • Music
  • Call logs
  • Documents
  • Email
  • Wi-Fi settings
  • App installation
  • App data on Galaxy devices
  • Home-screen layout
  • Other device settings

Android-to-Galaxy moves generally preserve more device configuration than a cross-platform move because Smart Switch can handle Galaxy-specific app data, home layout and settings. Google’s Android guidance recommends copying apps and data during the phone’s initial setup; on some devices, that option may not be available later.

From an iPhone or iPad

Smart Switch can bring contacts, text messages and media from an iPhone or iPad. Samsung also provides an iCloud import path for additional cloud data. iOS applications are not guaranteed to have identical Android versions, so plan to install Android equivalents and sign in again. App-specific data, subscriptions and secure credentials may require each service’s own recovery process.

Prepare before you start

A few checks prevent the most common failed or incomplete transfers.

  • Charge both phones. Keep the old phone and the foldable powered throughout the copy.
  • Update and unlock the devices. Have the old phone available to approve prompts and permissions.
  • Check storage on the foldable. A large photo or video library can exceed available space. Review the selected categories before starting.
  • Choose the right cable if you use a wired move. Use a USB-C data-transfer cable, not a cable that supports charging only. For an iPhone or iPad, use a physically compatible data cable or adapter for its port.
  • Know your account sign-ins. Some apps will install but still require a password, a one-time code or a fresh device registration.
  • Keep recovery methods available. Do not remove the old phone from authenticator apps, banking services or work accounts before testing access on the foldable.

Move data during the foldable’s first startup

The setup wizard is the preferred route because Android’s copy option can be unavailable after setup is complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn on the new Galaxy foldable and begin the setup wizard.
  2. At the data-copy screen, choose Galaxy or Android device for an Android source, or iPhone or iPad for an Apple source.
  3. Follow the wizard’s pairing instructions. Samsung says the wizard can copy an existing account, settings and more by QR code.
  4. On the foldable, open Smart Switch if the wizard does not open it automatically, then tap Receive data.
  5. Select the old phone’s platform.
  6. Choose Wireless for a cable-free transfer, or connect the phones with a USB-C data cable for a direct wired transfer.
  7. Approve the connection and permissions on the old phone. Keep both screens available until Smart Switch shows the category-selection screen.
  8. Review the categories and deselect anything that will not fit in the foldable’s available storage.
  9. Start the transfer. Leave both phones powered and connected until Smart Switch reports completion.
  10. Open the transfer report and begin the verification checklist before wiping or trading in the old phone.

Move data when the foldable is already set up

You can launch Smart Switch after setup instead of resetting the foldable.

  1. On the foldable, open Settings → Accounts and backup → Bring data from old device or Transfer data for device setup. The wording can vary by software version.
  2. Launch Smart Switch and tap Receive data.
  3. Choose Galaxy or Android device or iPhone or iPad, depending on the source.
  4. Select wireless or USB-C cable transfer, review the categories and start the copy.

If you have a computer backup, Samsung Cloud backup, microSD card or USB storage, Smart Switch also documents restoring from those sources. These methods are useful when the old phone is unavailable, when a direct connection fails or when you need an intermediate copy for a very large library.

Wireless, cable or backup restore: which method fits?

Method Source platform What to expect Accessory or intermediary When the foldable is already set up
Wireless Smart Switch Android, Galaxy, iPhone or iPad Android transfers can include contacts, calendars, messages, media, apps, selected app data, Wi-Fi settings and device settings. iPhone transfers cover core personal data, with iCloud import for additional cloud data. No cable; both phones must remain powered and connected. Supported through Smart Switch.
USB-C data cable Android, Galaxy, iPhone or iPad with a compatible data connection Uses the same Smart Switch categories as the selected source platform through a direct wired connection. USB-C data-transfer cable; a charge-only cable will not carry the transfer. Supported through Smart Switch.
Backup restore Content stored in a computer backup, Samsung Cloud, microSD card or USB storage Depends on what the backup contains and which categories Smart Switch can read. Computer, cloud account, microSD card or USB storage as applicable. Useful when the new phone is already configured.

Samsung and Google do not provide a guaranteed transfer speed or completion time in the guidance covered here. Large libraries take longer than small contact-only moves, so keep the phones connected until the completion report rather than judging progress by an estimated timer.

Android-to-Galaxy transfer details

For a Galaxy source, Smart Switch can reproduce more of the old phone’s feel: app installation, Galaxy app data, home layout, Wi-Fi settings and other device settings may be included alongside personal files. Review every category because selecting everything can consume substantial storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to check after an Android move

  • Open Contacts and confirm both the number of entries and several recently added contacts.
  • Check calendar views and a few future events, including recurring entries.
  • Open Messages and verify recent conversations, attachments and group threads.
  • Browse photo and video folders, then open several older files and recent files.
  • Test Wi-Fi connections at home and at another frequently used location.
  • Open important apps and confirm that their expected data is present rather than assuming an installed icon means a complete migration.
  • Check the home screen and folders if preserving the previous layout matters to you.

iPhone-to-Galaxy transfer details

An iPhone or iPad move is a platform change, not a perfect clone. Start Smart Switch on the foldable, choose Receive data, select iPhone or iPad and follow the wired or wireless prompts. Select contacts, messages and media for the direct move. Use Samsung’s iCloud import step when additional cloud data is stored there.

Plan for app replacement and new sign-ins

There is no guarantee that every iOS app has an identical Android version, and Smart Switch cannot turn an iOS-only application into an Android installation. Search for the service’s Android app on the foldable, install it and sign in. A service may then synchronize its account data, but that behavior is controlled by the service rather than by Smart Switch.

Keep the iPhone available while you test messaging, photo access, password-required apps and any account protected by a verification code. If a service uses the old iPhone as its trusted device, complete its own device-change or account-recovery procedure before retiring the iPhone.

Audit the new foldable before erasing the old phone

A transfer copies data; it does not erase the source phone. Perform this audit while the old device is still usable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. People and communication: check contacts, recent calls, messages, group conversations and message attachments.
  2. Photos and videos: compare recent and older dates, open files from different albums and confirm that important videos play.
  3. Documents and email: open a sample of local documents and confirm that required mail accounts sync.
  4. Apps: launch banking, travel, work, health and authentication apps. Confirm both their data and their ability to sign in.
  5. Two-factor authentication: generate a test code or complete a sign-in challenge before changing or deleting the old authenticator.
  6. Connectivity: test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth accessories and any device-specific settings you rely on.
  7. Storage: check that the foldable still has adequate free space after the copy completes.

Only after these checks should you factory-reset, sell or trade in the old phone. Retaining it temporarily is the recovery option if a missing file, credential or app-specific record appears later.

What may not transfer automatically

Platform-specific app data

App installation and app data are not the same thing. An app can appear on the foldable while requiring a fresh sign-in or a separate in-app restore. Galaxy-to-Galaxy transfers generally support more Galaxy-specific data than iPhone-to-Galaxy transfers.

Secure credentials and authenticators

Security-sensitive credentials, passkeys, authenticator databases and organization-controlled sign-in records can require a separate export, re-enrollment or account-recovery process. Complete those steps while the old phone still works. Do not assume that a copied app contains its secret keys.

Digital-rights-managed media

Some DRM-protected media may require you to download it again through the service that supplied it. A visible media app or account does not prove that every protected item was copied.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Managed phones and work content

Google warns that managed phones may not transfer everything. A company or school administrator can restrict copying, app installation or access to managed content. Ask the administrator for the approved enrollment and recovery procedure instead of trying to bypass the policy.

Troubleshoot a failed or incomplete transfer

Smart Switch cannot find the old phone

  • Unlock both phones and keep them awake while pairing.
  • Confirm that Smart Switch is open on the foldable with Receive data selected.
  • Accept connection and permission prompts on the old phone.
  • Retry using a USB-C data cable if wireless pairing does not complete, or switch to wireless if the cable is not recognized.

The transfer stops partway through

  • Reconnect both phones to power and restart the transfer.
  • Check the foldable’s available storage, especially when transferring a large photo or video library.
  • Replace a suspected charge-only or damaged cable with a known data-capable cable.
  • Transfer in smaller category groups if one large selection repeatedly fails.

Apps are missing or empty

Install the Android equivalent and sign in again. For a Galaxy source, review whether app data was selected. For an iPhone source, use the service’s own account synchronization or export process; iOS app data is not guaranteed to have an Android counterpart.

iPhone data is missing

Run the iCloud import step for cloud-stored content, then verify that the iPhone was unlocked and that the selected categories included the missing items. Keep the iPhone intact until the result is confirmed.

Work or school data is absent

Managed-device restrictions can block copying. Contact the organization’s administrator for an approved transfer or re-enrollment path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A safe finish

Smart Switch is the central path for a new Samsung foldable: run it during initial setup when possible, choose wireless or a USB-C data cable, review categories before copying and verify critical information afterward. Treat iPhone migration as a core-data move with additional iCloud and app sign-in work, and treat Android-to-Galaxy migration as broader but still subject to app, security, DRM and management limits. The old phone should remain available until the new foldable has passed your personal audit.
