Use WhatsApp’s built-in Transfer chats feature to move your account, conversations and most media directly from a Samsung Android phone to a Redmi Android phone. Keep the same phone number, do not register WhatsApp on the Redmi before starting the transfer on the Samsung, leave both phones powered, nearby, unlocked and in WhatsApp, and do not erase the Samsung until you have checked the Redmi. If direct transfer is unavailable, make a current Google Account backup on the Samsung and restore it during the Redmi’s initial WhatsApp setup.
Which transfer method should you use?
For two working Android phones, direct Chat Transfer is the preferred method. WhatsApp creates a temporary connection between the Samsung and Redmi and moves the account information, personal messages, photos, videos, documents and other chat history without requiring a cable or external drive. The old phone remains available until you decide to erase it.

Google Account backup and restore is the supported fallback when the phones cannot complete a direct connection, when the old phone will not stay available during setup, or when you want a cloud copy before attempting the move. It requires an active Google Account, Google Play services, internet access and enough storage. A backup is restored during initial WhatsApp setup on the Redmi; it is not an ordinary file that can be imported later.

Check the requirements before you start
- Android version: WhatsApp’s Android transfer instructions require Android 6 or later on both phones. Exact Samsung and Redmi model menus can differ, so follow the labels shown by your installed WhatsApp version.
- Phone number: Use the same number on the Redmi that is registered on the Samsung. If you are changing numbers, complete WhatsApp’s number-change process on the Samsung first; instructions are below.
- New phone status: Do not register or activate WhatsApp on the Redmi before beginning the transfer from the Samsung. If WhatsApp is already active there, the direct process must be restarted from an unregistered installation.
- Power and proximity: Connect both phones to power and keep them close together. A transfer can pause or fail if either phone sleeps, loses power or moves out of range.
- Wi-Fi: Enable Wi-Fi on both phones. WhatsApp’s main Android transfer instructions say the phones do not necessarily need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network for the direct transfer, but a particular troubleshooting prompt may ask for the same Wi-Fi network or another network condition. Follow the prompt displayed by WhatsApp.
- Permissions: Accept the permissions WhatsApp requests. On Android 12 and earlier, WhatsApp says precise-location permission is required for this process and that it does not collect precise location through that permission.
- Working old account: The Samsung must still open the WhatsApp account and display its chats. If you no longer have access to the old number or account, recover that account before attempting a move.
Before touching the transfer controls, check that the Redmi has enough free storage for the conversations and media you expect to receive. Also make sure you know the screen lock or authentication method on both phones, because you may need to unlock them repeatedly while the process runs.

Transfer WhatsApp directly from Samsung to Redmi
The following sequence uses WhatsApp’s Android-to-Android flow. The wording can vary slightly by app version, but the order is important: start the transfer on the old phone before registering the new one.
- Prepare both phones. Charge or connect the Samsung and Redmi, enable Wi-Fi, place them next to each other and keep the Samsung’s WhatsApp account intact. Do not uninstall WhatsApp or reset either phone.
- Open the transfer control on the Samsung. In WhatsApp, select More options > Settings > Chats > Transfer chats > Start. Approve the permissions requested on screen.
- Install WhatsApp on the Redmi. Download WhatsApp from the normal Android app source, open it, accept the terms and verify the same phone number used on the Samsung. Grant the requested permissions.
- Choose the old-phone transfer on the Redmi. When WhatsApp shows Restore or transfer chats, select Transfer from old phone, continue and start the process. Do not choose a different number or finish setup past this choice if you intend to use direct transfer.
- Scan the connection code. WhatsApp displays a QR code on the Redmi. Use the Samsung’s camera inside the transfer flow to scan it, then accept the connection on the Redmi if prompted.
- Leave the process undisturbed. Keep both screens unlocked, keep WhatsApp open on both devices and keep the phones near each other while the progress indicator runs. WhatsApp pauses messaging during the transfer, so new messages cannot be sent until the process completes.
- Finish the import. When WhatsApp reports that the import is complete, continue through the completion prompt on the Redmi. Allow the app time to index media if thumbnails or albums appear gradually.
- Check the result before deleting anything. Open several recent and older conversations on the Redmi, check group membership, scroll through important attachments and open representative photos, videos and documents. Only after those checks should you consider changing or wiping the Samsung.
The transfer is designed to move account information and personal messages plus photos, videos, documents and other chat/media history. It does not include peer-to-peer payment messages or media received over WhatsApp Channels. Those exclusions are part of WhatsApp’s stated transfer scope, not a sign that the operation failed.
Protect the Samsung until the Redmi is confirmed
The Samsung is your recovery copy while you verify the result. Do not delete its WhatsApp data, perform a factory reset, change phones, or uninstall WhatsApp immediately after the progress bar reaches the end. WhatsApp specifically advises keeping the old device intact until successful transfer is confirmed.

- Open conversations from different dates, including a long group thread and a one-to-one chat.
- Check the media tabs or attachments in chats that matter to you.
- Confirm that your profile, groups and recent messages appear under the correct number.
- Send a test message from the Redmi only after the imported history is visible.
- Keep the Samsung untouched until you are satisfied that the Redmi is your usable copy.
A direct transfer is not a merge operation. If you start using WhatsApp on the Redmi and later try to import an older Samsung history, new chats created on the Redmi cannot be merged with the old phone’s chats. Preserve the old copy and choose the correct route before activating the destination phone.
What if you are changing your phone number?
WhatsApp’s account-transfer guidance says to change the number on the old phone before transferring the account and chat history. On the Samsung, use WhatsApp’s own number-change feature while the old account is still accessible, complete verification of the new number, and then perform the Samsung-to-Redmi transfer using that updated account.
Do not simply register a new number on the Redmi and expect the old history to follow it. If you no longer have access to the old number or account, recover the old account first. A backup is tied to the account and number used for the WhatsApp setup; it is not a freely interchangeable archive that can be assigned to any different number.

Use Google Account backup when direct transfer is not practical
WhatsApp’s Android backup route stores a copy through a Google Account. It is useful when the two phones cannot maintain a direct connection, when you need to move at a different time, or when you want a separate safety copy. Google provides and manages the storage; WhatsApp does not keep your chat history on its servers for it to restore on request.

- An active Google Account added to the Samsung and available on the Redmi.
- Google Play services installed and functioning.
- Enough free space on the Samsung for the backup and enough space in the Google Account for the stored copy.
- A stable internet connection while creating and restoring the backup.
- The same WhatsApp phone number during setup on the Redmi.
- The password or 64-digit encryption key/passkey if the backup is protected with end-to-end encryption.
Create a fresh backup on the Samsung
- Open WhatsApp on the Samsung and select Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
- Check which Google Account is selected and confirm that it is the account you will use on the Redmi.
- Choose the manual backup option and wait for the backup date and time to update. Keep the phone connected to power and a reliable connection until it finishes.
- Decide whether videos should be included. WhatsApp does not include videos unless the Include videos option is enabled, and enabling it increases the backup size.
- If end-to-end encrypted backup is enabled, confirm that you can provide its password or 64-digit key/passkey. Without that credential, the encrypted copy cannot be opened.
Do not rely on an old backup timestamp if conversations or media changed recently. Create the fresh copy before starting WhatsApp on the Redmi.
Restore the backup on the Redmi
- Add the same Google Account to the Redmi and make sure Google Play services and internet access are available.
- Install and open WhatsApp on the Redmi, accept the terms and verify the same phone number used for the backup.
- When WhatsApp offers to find and restore a backup, confirm the displayed Google Account and backup date before proceeding.
- Choose Restore and wait for the message history to finish restoring. Media may continue downloading after the text history appears.
- Complete the remaining setup and inspect important conversations and attachments.
Restore is offered during initial setup. If you complete setup without accepting the restore prompt, WhatsApp’s troubleshooting guidance recommends starting again from a clean installation rather than expecting a later import. Preserve the Samsung until the Redmi has been checked.

Troubleshooting common transfer problems
The Redmi does not show the QR code
Confirm that you verified the number on the Redmi and selected Transfer from old phone under Restore or transfer chats. If WhatsApp is already active on the Redmi, uninstall it, install it again and begin from the initial setup. A destination that has already been registered cannot be used for the direct flow without starting over.
The QR scan fails or the phones will not connect
- Enable Wi-Fi on both devices and keep them next to each other.
- Check that the Redmi is displaying a live QR code generated after registration, not a stale setup screen.
- Grant every permission requested by WhatsApp. On some Android versions, the app may ask for precise location or live-location access as part of connection troubleshooting.
- Unlock both phones and keep WhatsApp in the foreground.
- If WhatsApp specifically asks that both devices use the same Wi-Fi network, follow that on-device instruction even though the general transfer guidance says a network connection is not always required.
The transfer is stuck or ends with an error
Stop the attempt, restart both phones, wait about 30 seconds after they power off, then retry from the beginning. Recheck power, Wi-Fi, permissions and free storage. Do not erase the Samsung while investigating; preserving its WhatsApp data gives you another attempt and keeps the backup option available.
WhatsApp is already active on the Redmi
WhatsApp’s troubleshooting instructions say the transfer must happen before activation. New chats made on the Redmi cannot be merged with the Samsung’s old history. If the Redmi contains no information you need, uninstall WhatsApp, reinstall it and repeat the setup so that Transfer from old phone appears before activation.
The old phone is lost, broken or no longer has the account
Direct transfer requires the old account and phone. Use a Google Account backup only if one was created and is accessible with the correct Google Account, number and encryption credential. If you no longer control the old number or account, recover that account first; do not assume that any backup can be attached to a different number.
A third-party migration app recommends a faster method
WhatsApp states: “Using non-WhatsApp chat transfer apps isn’t supported and may cause loss of chats.” Avoid utilities that ask you to extract WhatsApp databases, disable security protections or upload private conversations. Use the built-in transfer flow or the official Google backup route instead.
Important limits and safety notes
- No ordinary cable is required: The official direct flow uses the phones’ Wi-Fi capability and a QR code. WhatsApp does not require a USB cable, external drive or special Samsung-to-Redmi adapter.
- Exports are not restores: An exported WhatsApp chat is a text record for reading or sharing. WhatsApp says exported chat files cannot be imported back as live chat history.
- Messaging pauses during direct transfer: Plan the move when you can leave WhatsApp open and avoid sending messages until it finishes.
- Media can take longer than text: A conversation list may appear before every photo, video or document has finished indexing or restoring. Check important attachments before wiping the Samsung.
- Model-specific menus vary: Samsung One UI and Redmi software versions can place Wi-Fi, battery or permission controls in different locations. The WhatsApp labels and on-screen prompts are the authoritative path for this operation.
- Keep credentials private: Never share your WhatsApp verification code, Google Account password or encrypted-backup password/key with another person or an untrusted app.
Final verification checklist
Before retiring the Samsung, confirm all of the following on the Redmi:

- Representative photos, videos and documents open.
- Your profile and expected settings are present.
- You can send and receive a new test message.
- You have no unresolved prompt asking for a backup password or encryption key.
Once these checks pass, you can remove WhatsApp data from the Samsung or reset the old phone according to your normal device-disposal plan. Until then, the Samsung is the safest copy of the history you are trying to preserve.

For a Samsung-to-Redmi move, start with WhatsApp’s direct Transfer chats flow: same number, Android 6 or later, Wi-Fi enabled, both phones powered and nearby, and the Redmi unregistered until the Samsung begins the transfer.
