What you need before moving WhatsApp
Choose the method before opening WhatsApp on the replacement phone. The direct route works when both Android phones are available at the same time. The backup route is useful when you need to restore from a previously created Google Account backup.

Method 1: Use WhatsApp Chat Transfer
Chat Transfer is WhatsApp’s direct Android-to-Android migration feature. It moves chat and media history from the old handset to the new one without first creating a Google Account backup. The phones communicate during the transfer, so keep them together and leave WhatsApp in the foreground until the progress bar finishes.

1. Prepare the old phone
- Charge the old phone or connect it to power. Keep its screen available throughout the process.
- Turn on Wi-Fi on both phones. A Wi-Fi connection to a router is not required according to WhatsApp’s instructions, but the Wi-Fi setting itself must be enabled.
- Keep the two phones physically near each other. Do not reset, erase, or uninstall WhatsApp from the old phone.
- Open WhatsApp on the old phone and go to More options > Settings > Chats > Transfer chats.
- Tap Start. This initiates the migration from the source phone; it is the point at which you should proceed with setup on the new phone.
2. Start setup on the new phone
- Install and open WhatsApp on the new Android phone.
- Tap Agree and continue, then verify the same phone number used on the old phone.
- When WhatsApp displays the restore or transfer choices, select Transfer from old phone. Do not choose a different setup path if you intend to use the direct transfer.
- Continue through the permission prompts. The requested permissions are necessary for the connection. On Android 12 and earlier, WhatsApp says precise-location permission is required for this process and that it does not collect precise location for it.
3. Pair the phones with the QR code
- The new phone displays a QR code after you choose the transfer option.
- Use the old phone’s camera inside the transfer flow to scan that QR code. Scan the code shown by the new phone after registration; scanning a different code or leaving the setup flow can prevent pairing.
- Accept the connection on the new phone when WhatsApp asks you to confirm it.
4. Let the import finish
- Keep WhatsApp open on both phones and leave both screens unlocked.
- Do not switch off Wi-Fi, separate the handsets, or interrupt the process while the progress bar is moving. Messaging is paused during the transfer.
- When the import completes, tap Next on the new phone.
- Open several individual conversations, group chats, photos, videos, documents, and voice messages that matter to you. Check that recent messages and the expected media are present before changing anything on the old phone.
What the direct transfer does—and does not—move
WhatsApp describes Chat Transfer as moving chat and media history between Android phones, but it lists specific exclusions. Payment messages are not transferred. Media received through WhatsApp Channels is not transferred. The cited WhatsApp help page also states that the WhatsApp Business app cannot currently transfer chats with this feature.
Those exclusions are different from a failed transfer. A completed migration can still omit those categories by design. Preserve the old phone until you have reviewed the new phone and decided whether the missing items are important to retain elsewhere.

Method 2: Back up to a Google Account and restore
Use this route when a direct phone-to-phone move is not practical, or when you deliberately want to restore an existing WhatsApp backup. The backup belongs to both the phone number and Google Account used to create it. A different number or account can make an otherwise valid backup appear unavailable.
1. Create a current backup on the old phone
- Open WhatsApp on the old phone.
- Go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
- Tap Back up and wait for the operation to finish before closing WhatsApp or removing the account from the phone.
- Note which Google Account is selected for WhatsApp backup and keep access to that account on the new phone.
WhatsApp says each later Google Account backup overwrites the previous backup. Therefore, make the manual backup only after the old phone contains the conversations you intend to carry forward. A backup is not protected by WhatsApp end-to-end encryption unless you have enabled that option in WhatsApp’s backup settings.

2. Restore during new-phone setup
- On the new Android phone, add or select the same Google Account used to create the backup.
- Install and open WhatsApp, then register it with the same phone number.
- When WhatsApp finds the backup, choose Restore from backup and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Allow the restore to complete, then open conversations and media to verify the result.
If WhatsApp reports that no backup was found, first check the Google Account selected on the new phone and confirm that the registered number matches the number tied to the backup. Google specifically recommends using the same Google Account on both phones when a backup is not found.
Understand replacement rather than merging
Google’s Android guidance warns that chat history already created on the new phone cannot be merged with the old history. Restoring the old backup replaces the new phone’s WhatsApp history. If you have already exchanged messages on the new phone, preserve anything important before choosing restore; do not assume those messages will be appended to the old archive.

If your phone number is changing
Change the number on the old phone before moving the account and chat history. WhatsApp warns that registering the new number directly on the new phone, without first changing the number on the old phone, can result in lost chat history.
Complete the number change in WhatsApp on the old device while its existing chats are still available. After that account change has been completed, use the direct-transfer or backup-and-restore procedure with the updated number as required by the setup prompts. Keep the old phone intact until the new phone shows the expected conversations.

Which migration method should you choose?

Troubleshoot a failed or incomplete transfer
The QR code will not pair
- Confirm that Chat Transfer was started on the old phone before the new phone was registered for migration.
- Use the old phone’s camera within WhatsApp to scan the current QR code displayed on the new phone. Do not scan an old or unrelated code.
- Accept every permission prompt. WhatsApp identifies permissions as necessary to complete the connection.
- Keep Wi-Fi enabled on both devices and check the live-location setting if the QR connection still fails; WhatsApp lists Wi-Fi and live-location settings among possible QR issues.
- If the problem persists, restart both phones and begin the transfer again. WhatsApp recommends restarting both devices as the first retry step.
The transfer stops, stalls, or shows an error
- Do not delete WhatsApp data, reset the old phone, or uninstall the app from it. WhatsApp says the source data remains on the old phone when a transfer fails, stalls, or errors.
- Reconnect both phones to power, keep them close, unlock both screens, and reopen the transfer flow.
- Restart both phones, then start again from Settings > Chats > Transfer chats > Start on the old phone.
- After a second attempt, verify the chats on the new phone before making any changes to the old phone.
The new phone cannot find a Google Account backup
- Check that the new phone is signed in to the exact Google Account used for WhatsApp backup.
- Verify the phone number entered during WhatsApp registration. Backups are tied to the number used to create them.
- On the old phone, confirm that a manual backup completed from Settings > Chats > Chat backup. If the old phone is still available, create a fresh backup and try restore again.
Some content is missing after a successful move
First distinguish an intentional exclusion from an error. Direct Chat Transfer does not move payment messages or media received through WhatsApp Channels, and WhatsApp Business is listed as unable to use this transfer feature. For ordinary chats and media, keep the old phone untouched and retry the documented route rather than deleting the source data.
You already used WhatsApp on the new phone
Do not expect the old and new histories to combine. The direct method says the destination should not be registered before migration is initiated. For a Google restore, Google says the old history replaces the history already created on the new phone. Decide which history is authoritative before continuing.
