The original game and SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition are separate compatibility targets. Original-edition mods do not carry over to Complete Edition: its integrated Mod.io support makes those mods incompatible.
Back up the entire source save folder and your mod files before changing anything. Copy only duplicates, test one campaign first, and keep the untouched backup until the destination version loads successfully.

What can move between editions—and what cannot
There are two different migration problems: moving campaign data and moving modifications. A save is a record of campaign state; a mod can change the units, scripts, database or rules that the save expects. A copied save may therefore load only when the destination has the appropriate edition, downloadable content and compatible mod setup.
The most important distinction is that the original game and Complete Edition are not one shared installation target. Steam’s Complete Edition package includes the original SHOGUN 2 and its downloadable content except the Blood Pack. Purchases through Epic, Microsoft Store and GOG include Complete Edition only. Confirm the storefront and edition before copying anything.

SEGA announced Complete Edition for October 13, 2026, with a 64-bit upgrade and more than 50 newly playable minor factions. Existing Steam owners were offered a 75% limited-time loyalty discount ending November 12, 2026. Those product details do not change the file-copy rules: ownership of both packages does not make their mods interchangeable, and a successful save load must still be verified.
Back up before you touch the installation
Do not begin by moving the only copy of a campaign. A failed load, an overwrite or a mod mismatch can leave you with less information than you started with. Use this sequence for every migration.
- Exit the game. Close SHOGUN 2, then exit Steam completely. Do not copy while the game or client may be writing autosaves, configuration data or workshop files.
- Make a dated save backup. Copy the entire original save directory, not just the newest visible file. Include manual saves, autosaves and advisor or tutorial saves if they are present. Name the copy with the source edition, computer and date so you can identify it later.
- Back up mod sources separately. Preserve subscribed Workshop content, locally installed
.packfiles and any Assembly Kit working files. A subscription record is not the same thing as a standalone archive of the files currently on disk. - Use independent storage. Put the duplicate on a USB flash drive or another location that is not the source computer’s active game folder. A USB stick is a practical way to carry a local save between computers.
- Keep the source untouched. Do not delete, rename or “clean up” the original until the destination has loaded a test campaign and you have confirmed that the result is usable.
When the source campaign uses mods, record the mod list and load order in a text file alongside the backup. This is a reference for rebuilding the campaign; it does not make an original mod compatible with Complete Edition.

That is the place to look for locally installed original-edition data files, including .pack files. Steam may be installed on another drive, and a 64-bit Windows installation can use a different Steam library location, so treat the path as the default rather than a promise about your computer.
Workshop subscriptions can redownload their content when the game launches. For that reason, copying a single file from the data directory is not a complete preservation strategy: keep the full backup and the subscription or mod list as well.
Windows: save files
The published material available for this migration identifies the Windows mod-data path above but does not establish one universal Windows save path. Install location, user profile and edition can affect where the game keeps campaign data. To locate the source folder safely, close the game, search the system for a folder named save_games, and compare candidate folders by modification date and by the presence of the campaigns you recognize. Once identified, copy the whole folder rather than individual files.

If more than one candidate exists, open the newest location only after making a backup. Do not merge similarly named folders from different editions; preserve each as a separate dated archive until you know which one the game is reading.
macOS: original-game saves
Community guidance identifies the original Mac port’s save directory as:
~/Library/Application Support/Feral Interactive/Total War SHOGUN 2/appdata/save_games

In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder…, enter the path exactly, and press Return. If the folder is not visible, make sure the game has been launched at least once on that Mac and that you are using the same macOS user account that runs the game. Move an original-game save from Windows to Mac
This procedure is for the original SHOGUN 2 build on both computers. It does not convert a Windows modded campaign into a Complete Edition campaign.
- Prepare the source. Exit the game and Steam on Windows. Copy the complete Windows save directory to your dated backup location. Include every save category you want to retain.
- Carry the duplicate. Copy the backup to a USB flash drive or another independent transfer location. Leave the original Windows folder in place.
- Prepare the Mac. Install and launch the original Mac build once, quit it, then open Finder’s Go > Go to Folder… command.
- Open the destination. Enter
~/Library/Application Support/Feral Interactive/Total War SHOGUN 2/appdata/save_games. - Copy, do not move. Place the backed-up save files in that
save_gamesdirectory. If macOS asks whether to replace a file, stop and preserve the destination copy in a separate folder first; overwriting removes a useful comparison point. - Launch the original build. Open the campaign list and look for the transferred manual or autosave. Test one campaign before copying additional material.
- Check downloadable content and mods. If the campaign is missing or refuses to load, verify that the Mac installation has the same campaign type and required DLC. Reinstall or re-subscribe to Mac-compatible original-game mods separately; do not assume Windows Workshop files will work unchanged on macOS.
A save that appears in the list but fails during loading is not a successful transfer. Quit without deleting the backup, restore the untouched source if necessary, and test with the closest unmodded or differently modded save you have. Keep notes about which save and edition were tested so you do not overwrite a known-good copy.
Move a save from the original game to Complete Edition
SEGA’s published Complete Edition FAQ does not guarantee that campaigns from the original game will load. The correct approach is therefore controlled testing, not a one-click conversion.
- Confirm the destination edition. Check the title shown in your launcher and the storefront package. Steam can contain both targets, while Epic, Microsoft Store and GOG purchases described above provide Complete Edition only.
- Preserve the original installation or archive. Keep the original game, its save backup and its mod backup until testing is finished. A Complete Edition installation should never be your only copy of an active campaign.
- Choose one expendable campaign. Select a save you can afford to test. Copy that duplicate into the Complete Edition save location only after you have confirmed which folder that edition is using.
- Start without copying original mod files. Do not place original
.packfiles in the Complete Edition data directory. Launch with the destination’s default content first so you can distinguish save incompatibility from a mod conflict. - Check the campaign list and load. A campaign that is visible but fails to load has not passed the test. Try another save only after recording the result and preserving the first backup.
- Rebuild modifications independently. Find an equivalent in Mod.io, read its edition and version notes, and add one mod at a time. Keep the original Workshop and Assembly Kit archive for the original game.
There is no published conversion utility or universal compatibility promise in the FAQ reviewed for this edition change. A successful result for one campaign does not establish that every campaign, patch level, DLC combination or modded save will work.

Why original mods do not transfer to Complete Edition
The incompatibility is deliberate rather than a missing copy operation. SEGA’s Complete Edition FAQ states: “Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition is launching with integrated mod support with Mod.IO, therefore mods from the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 are not compatible with Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition.”
That statement has several practical consequences:
- Steam Workshop subscriptions from the original edition do not activate those same mods in Complete Edition.
- Copying an original
.packfile into the Complete Edition data directory is not a supported migration method. - Assembly Kit projects and working files remain valuable source material, but they are not automatically converted into Mod.io packages.
- A modded save may depend on content that is unavailable in the destination. Test the save without the original mod files before diagnosing anything else.
- For Complete Edition, search Mod.io for an equivalent and check its edition and version notes. The equivalent may have different settings, dependencies or behavior.
For the original game on Mac, treat mod installation as a separate task from save transfer. Reinstall or re-subscribe to versions intended for the Mac build instead of copying a Windows Workshop folder wholesale.
Use a controlled test matrix
When a campaign does not load, change one variable at a time. The following order prevents you from destroying the evidence needed to identify the cause.
- Edition: Confirm that the source and destination titles are the ones you intended.
- Platform: Confirm whether the destination is Windows or the Feral Mac port.
- DLC: Check that the destination owns the campaign’s required downloadable content.
- Mod state: Test the copied save with no original-edition mods enabled, then rebuild only with destination-compatible mods.
- File copy: Compare the dated backup with the destination copy and recopy from the untouched source if a file was interrupted or overwritten.
- Patch state: Record the game build shown by each installation. A result from one patch should not be treated as a guarantee for another.

When to keep both editions installed
Keeping the original game available is the least risky choice when a long-running campaign depends on Workshop or Assembly Kit content, when a save has not yet been tested in Complete Edition, or when you need to preserve a modded campaign exactly as it was played. Complete Edition is the better destination for its newer 64-bit build, its additional minor factions and its integrated Mod.io workflow, but those advantages do not remove the need for an original-edition archive.
Use separate backup folders labeled by edition, platform and date. For example, distinguish an original Windows archive from an original Mac archive and from a Complete Edition test copy. Never let a launcher or a file-management operation turn those three states into one undifferentiated folder.
