For an Indian citizen moving to Switzerland for more than 90 days, the process starts with the right residence route and authorization from the canton where you plan to live. If you are going for a job, your prospective employer generally applies for the work permit; a job offer alone does not authorize you to work. After arrival, register with your local commune within 14 days—and, if employed, do so before starting work.
How can I move to Switzerland from India?
Work out your reason for moving, intended canton and length of stay before applying. The Swiss Embassy in India distinguishes short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period from stays longer than 90 days. A stay exceeding 90 days generally requires a national visa, and the Embassy says that visa is subject to authorization by the migration authority responsible for your intended place of residence. Indian citizens generally need a visa for this long-stay route.

There is no single application checklist or residence permit for everyone moving from India. Employment, study and family reunification have different requirements, and the competent canton handles or coordinates important parts of the case. Check the latest Embassy of Switzerland in India checklist for your route and ask the destination canton which additional documents it requires.
- Choose the route. Identify whether you are moving for employment, study, family reunification or another purpose, and establish which canton will be responsible.
- Confirm authorization and documents. Follow the applicable Embassy checklist and the canton’s instructions. Do not treat an entry visa checklist as interchangeable with a student or family-reunification checklist.
- Wait for the required decisions. Obtain the relevant cantonal authorization and, where required, the national visa before travelling.
- Arrange your arrival address and commune registration. Find out how the commune where you will live handles registration appointments and what evidence it requires.
- Complete settlement tasks on time. Register within 14 days of arrival, observe the work-start restriction if employed, and arrange compulsory health insurance within the applicable period.
The Embassy of Switzerland in India gives an approximate processing estimate of 8–12 weeks for national-visa applications. It says timing can vary considerably by canton and case, so treat this as a planning estimate, not a guaranteed decision date.

Which route applies to your move?
| Purpose | What to establish first | Where to confirm the case-specific requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Employment | Whether the job and your qualifications meet the third-country admission rules; the employer generally initiates the work-permit application. | The employer and the cantonal employment or migration authority; then follow the relevant Embassy visa instructions. |
| Study | The applicable long-stay student route and its supporting documents. | The current student checklist from the Embassy of Switzerland in India and the canton responsible for your residence. |
| Family reunification | Whether the sponsor’s status and your family relationship qualify, and whether the conditions for accommodation and financial support are met. | The cantonal authority and the current family-reunification checklist from the Embassy of Switzerland in India. |
| Another long-term purpose | The specific residence basis and authorization required; a general intention to live in Switzerland does not identify a permit category. | The migration authority for the intended canton and the Embassy’s instructions for the case. |
Swiss public guidance lists permit designations for third-country nationals such as L, B, C, Ci, G, F and N. These are tied to different circumstances and are not a set of options every newcomer can choose from. The canton can identify the applicable category and current evidence requirements for your purpose and duration of stay.
How do Indian citizens get a Swiss work permit?
Indian nationals are treated as third-country nationals for Swiss employment. Admission is limited and generally aimed at highly qualified candidates. The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) describes the typical candidate as a university or higher-education graduate with several years of professional experience; qualifications and profession matter in an individual case.
Your prospective employer generally applies to the cantonal employment or immigration authority. The employer must usually show that it could not recruit a suitable candidate from Switzerland or an EU/EFTA state. SEM summarizes the requirement this way: “Your future employer must apply for a work permit for you and prove that there is no suitable person to fill the job vacancy from Switzerland or an EU/EFTA state.”

The permit and any required entry visa are separate parts of the process. Cantonal authorities screen the application first; approved applications go to SEM for federal review, and the visa-authorization process follows the necessary approvals. Ask the employer for the written status of the application and follow the authorities’ instructions before making commitments based on a projected start date.

When must I register after arriving in Switzerland?
Register with the local communal authority in the place where you live within 14 days of arrival. If you are coming to work, you must register before taking up the job. Registration is a post-arrival requirement; it does not replace the authorization and visa needed to enter and reside in Switzerland.
Contact your commune or canton for its appointment procedure and document list. There is no single federal checklist established for every municipality and permit situation, so confirm what applies to your address and case rather than relying on a generic list.

How do I find housing before registering?
You need to know where you will live so you can identify the responsible commune and complete local registration. Start by choosing a canton and locality, then check current rental listings and lease conditions directly for that area. Housing availability, rents, deposits and landlord document requirements vary locally; federal guidance does not establish a current city-by-city rental guide or one national set of tenancy terms.
If you plan to bring family through family reunification, housing is also an immigration condition: the accommodation must be large enough for the family under Swiss standards. The official guidance does not translate that standard into a universal apartment size, so do not assume a particular number of rooms will qualify. Confirm the canton’s assessment and evidence requirements before relying on a property for the application.

Can I bring my spouse and children?
Swiss guidance for third-country residents says family reunification may be available for a spouse or registered partner and unmarried children under 18, subject to the sponsor’s permit status and the conditions that apply. Switzerland must recognize the marriage or registered partnership. The canton decides the individual case.
- Accommodation: The sponsor needs housing adequate for the family under Swiss standards.
- Financial circumstances: The sponsor must not rely on social assistance. A self-employed or unemployed sponsor must demonstrate sufficient financial resources.
- Language in a specified spouse situation: Where the spouse cannot communicate in the local national language, the guidance lists at least oral A1 ability or enrolment in a language course.
Use the current family-reunification checklist and ask the canton to confirm which requirements apply to your permit, family relationship and circumstances.
When should I arrange Swiss health insurance?
Swiss health insurance is compulsory. The federal ch.ch work guidance tells workers to insure themselves and their family no later than three months after arriving or beginning work. Confirm the applicable start date and coverage requirements for your own status with an insurer or official guidance, and include each family member who needs coverage.
