Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The safest way to move screenshots out of Google Photos is to create copies, then verify those copies before removing anything from Photos. For a few files, download the screenshots from photos.google.com and upload them to Google Drive or another cloud service. For a large collection, use Google Takeout: it can create an archive and deliver it to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or Box.
Neither method is a destructive “move” by default. Exporting or downloading leaves the Google Photos originals on Google’s servers, so you decide separately whether and when to delete them.

Choose the right transfer method
Your best workflow depends mainly on how many screenshots you need to transfer and whether you want individual image files immediately or can work with an archive first.
| Situation | Recommended method | What you receive | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| A handful of screenshots | Download from Google Photos, then upload | Individual image files | Each file must be selected, downloaded and uploaded |
| Hundreds or thousands of screenshots | Google Takeout | One or more export archives | You may need to download, extract and organize the archive |
| You want to stay inside one Google account | Takeout with “Add to Drive” | An archive in Google Drive | The archive uses your shared Google Account storage |
| You want separation from Google | Takeout to Dropbox, OneDrive or Box | An archive in that provider | You must manage a separate account’s quota and sharing rules |
For a small number, individual downloads are normally fastest because the destination contains usable image files as soon as the upload finishes. Takeout is the documented bulk-export route when selecting files one by one would be impractical.

What happens to your originals
Downloading, uploading and creating a Takeout export make copies. They do not remove the Google Photos originals. Google’s Photos help explicitly says: “Important: If you download your Google data, it doesn’t delete it from Google’s servers.”
Treat the operation as copy-and-verify rather than drag-and-drop moving. Keep the originals until you have confirmed that the destination contains the screenshots you need, that the files open correctly and that the archive has been extracted if necessary. Only then should you consider deleting anything in Google Photos.
Method 1: transfer a few screenshots by downloading them
This is the simplest route when you need only a few images or want the destination to contain separately browsable files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStep 1: Open Google Photos on a computer
- Open photos.google.com in a desktop browser and sign in to the Google account that contains the screenshots.
- Use the Photos timeline, search, albums or other organization already present in your account to locate the screenshots.
The documented download workflow is computer-based. If the screenshots are difficult to identify, search for them first and then select only the files intended for export.
Step 2: Select a screenshot
- Open the screenshot or select it from the grid.
- Choose More, then choose Download.
Google Photos creates a local copy on the computer. The browser may save it in its default Downloads folder, or it may ask where to save it depending on your browser settings.
Step 3: Upload the local copy
- Open Google Drive or the other cloud service you have chosen in a second browser tab or window.
- Create or open the folder where the screenshots should live.
- Use that service’s upload control and select the downloaded image file.
- Wait for the upload indicator to finish before closing the tab or shutting down the computer.
Repeat the download and upload sequence for each screenshot. If you download several files together, keep them in a clearly named local folder so you can match the local set with the uploaded set.

Step 4: Check the destination
- Open several uploaded screenshots, including at least one of the largest or most important files.
- Confirm that the file count in the destination matches the number you intended to transfer.
- Check that filenames, dates shown by the destination and image content are acceptable for your filing system.
- Do not delete the Google Photos originals until these checks pass.
Method 2: transfer many screenshots with Google Takeout
Google Takeout is the appropriate documented workflow for a large export. It packages Google Photos data into an archive instead of presenting every screenshot as an individual upload step.
Step 1: Select Google Photos in Takeout
- Open Google Takeout while signed in to the correct Google account.
- In the product list, select Google Photos.
- Use the product’s All data included control if you need to limit which Photos data is included in the export.
Limiting the selection is important when your library contains more than screenshots. A narrower export can make the archive easier to handle and reduces unrelated files in the destination.
Step 2: Continue to export settings
- Select Next step.
- Review the available export settings presented by Takeout.
- Choose the delivery method that matches your destination and storage plan.
Step 3: Choose where the archive will go
Takeout can deliver the export to Google Drive or to supported external cloud destinations such as Dropbox, OneDrive and Box.
| Delivery choice | Best fit | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Add to Drive | You already organize files in Google Drive and want the export in the same Google account | The archive consumes the shared Google Account storage quota |
| Dropbox | Your working files and collaborators already use Dropbox | The archive uses Dropbox storage and may need extraction before individual browsing |
| OneDrive | Your files are managed in the OneDrive ecosystem | The archive uses OneDrive storage and follows that account’s quota and permissions |
| Box | Your organization already receives exports in Box | The archive is subject to Box storage and access policies |
Step 4: Create and wait for the export
- Select Create export.
- Wait for Google’s notification that the export is ready.
- Open the destination folder or account and locate the generated archive.
Export preparation is not an instant upload operation. The time depends on the amount of Google Photos data selected and the destination process. Keep the Google Photos library intact while the export is being prepared and checked.
Step 5: Inspect and extract the archive
- Confirm that the archive downloaded or arrived in the selected cloud account.
- Download the archive to a computer if the destination does not provide the organization tools you need.
- Extract it with your operating system’s archive utility or another trusted archive tool.
- Locate the screenshots and move or copy them into the folder structure you actually intend to use.
Takeout is optimized for exporting data, not for presenting a perfectly curated screenshot folder. Expect to perform a small amount of sorting after extraction. Keep the original archive until you are satisfied that the extracted images are complete, unless storage pressure requires removing it after verification.
How Google Drive storage and Photos synchronization differ
Google Photos and Google Drive are separate products for synchronization purposes. They are not two live views of one automatically mirrored file library.

Google stated: “Since photos and videos will no longer sync across both products, items copied in Original Quality will count towards your storage quota in both Drive and Photos.” In practical terms, a copy placed in Drive is a separate stored item. It does not become a transparent replacement for the Photos item, and changes made to one copy should not be assumed to update the other.
Google Account storage is shared across Google Photos, Drive and Gmail. An archive added to Drive therefore uses the same account-level quota that those other services use. Before choosing Add to Drive, check that enough storage remains for the archive and for the extracted screenshots if you plan to keep both.
Choosing between Drive and another cloud
The transfer method is the same general idea, but the destination affects quota, access and day-to-day management.

Drive is convenient when you already share documents through a Google account and want the screenshots in that environment. The key cost is shared quota: a Takeout archive added to Drive competes for space with Photos and Gmail. An archive may also be less convenient than individual files until you extract and reorganize it.
Dropbox
Dropbox can be a sensible destination when your existing folders, collaborators or backup routines are already there. Its own storage allowance applies, and a Takeout archive generally needs to be opened or extracted before screenshots are individually browsable.
OneDrive
OneDrive fits users who already manage files in that ecosystem. Plan around the account’s available quota and its sharing permissions rather than assuming Google’s storage rules carry over.

Box
Box is another supported Takeout destination. It can make sense for an organization with established Box folders and retention policies. Check that those policies permit the archive size and that the people who need the screenshots can access the resulting folder.
Account separation as a deciding factor
A non-Google destination separates the exported copy from the Google account that holds the Photos originals. That can be useful for independent backup, organizational ownership or a change in how you manage files. Keeping the archive in Drive is simpler when one account and one sharing system are preferred.
Storage planning before you export
Estimate the size of the screenshots and the temporary space needed for the archive and extracted files. A Takeout export can require room for both the compressed archive and the files created after extraction. If your computer’s internal disk is tight, use removable staging storage.
- A USB flash drive can hold downloaded screenshots temporarily before you upload them to cloud storage.
- An external SSD can provide more practical staging space for very large Takeout archives or computers with limited internal storage.
- Neither accessory is required by Google, and the suitable capacity depends on the size of your export and how long you plan to keep local copies.
Do not treat a removable drive as the only copy while it is being used as a transfer step. Eject it safely, avoid interrupting an active copy and keep the cloud or Google Photos copy available until verification is complete.

Deletion should be a separate decision made only after the destination has been checked.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Compare the number of screenshots selected with the number present after upload or extraction.
- Open files from different parts of the export, not just the first few alphabetically.
- Check that important screenshots display fully and are not zero-byte or visibly damaged files.
- Confirm that the destination account can still access the files after signing out and back in, if account separation matters.
- For a Takeout archive, verify both the archive itself and the extracted screenshot folder before discarding either.
- Keep the Google Photos originals until the checks are complete and you have decided that the new copy meets your backup or organization needs.
Troubleshooting common transfer problems
The archive is in Drive but the screenshots are not easy to browse
That is expected for an archive-based export. Download the archive, extract it and organize the resulting image files into folders. Keep the archive as a reference until you have checked the extracted set.

Drive reports that storage is insufficient
A Takeout archive added to Drive counts against the shared Google Account quota. Free space by removing unneeded data, use a different supported destination with sufficient capacity or choose a smaller Photos selection through All data included. Do not assume that deleting a local download changes cloud quota.
The destination cloud is full
Dropbox, OneDrive and Box apply their own storage limits. Check the available space in that account, reduce the export scope or use another supported destination. The Google Photos originals remain available while you resolve the destination problem.
You cannot find the downloaded files
Check the browser’s Downloads location and its download history. Search the computer for recently created image files, then move them into a dedicated staging folder before uploading so the transfer can be audited.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Some screenshots appear to be missing
First confirm whether the missing files were included in the Takeout selection. If the export was narrowed with All data included, create a new export with the required Photos data selected. For individual transfers, compare your original selection list with the uploaded folder and download the missing items again.
You want to delete the Photos originals immediately
Do not use deletion as a way to test whether the transfer worked. Exporting does not delete Google’s copy, so retain the originals until the destination has passed the verification checklist. Deleting from Photos is irreversible for the purposes of this transfer once any available recovery window has passed.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Choose individual downloads when the number of screenshots is small and you want ready-to-use files.
- Choose Takeout when selecting screenshots one by one would take too long.
- Choose Drive when shared Google-account access is more valuable than account separation and your shared quota can hold the archive.
- Choose Dropbox, OneDrive or Box when your existing files, collaborators or policies already live there.
- Use a USB flash drive or external SSD only as optional staging storage when local disk space is limited.
- Verify the uploaded files or extracted archive before removing any Google Photos originals.
