The safest migration path is to export Firefox’s saved logins to a CSV file, import that file using the destination password manager’s official procedure, verify several entries, and then delete the CSV. Firefox’s export is readable, unencrypted data, so keep the file only on a local, private device while the transfer is in progress. These steps move credentials into a separate password-manager application; they are different from using Firefox Sync to share passwords between Firefox devices.
What you need before exporting
Prepare the destination before creating an export. You should have:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A password-manager account or installation that you can unlock and that has an official import procedure.
- Access to the Firefox profile containing the saved usernames and passwords.
- The Firefox Primary Password, if you configured one, and the ability to complete any operating-system authentication Firefox requests.
- A private local folder for the temporary CSV. Do not choose a shared folder, cloud-synced folder, email attachment, chat upload, or removable media that other people can access.
- Time to verify the imported records before deleting anything from Firefox.
The menu wording differs between Firefox versions and languages. You may see Logins and Passwords or simply Passwords, and the export command may be called Export Logins… or Export Passwords…. Those labels lead to the same type of saved-login export.

Step 1: Open Firefox’s saved-password list
- Open Firefox’s application menu.
- Select Logins and Passwords. If your interface uses the shorter label, select Passwords.
- Wait for the password-manager page to load. It lists the websites for which Firefox has stored login information.
If Firefox asks you to unlock the list, complete the prompt before continuing. A Primary Password prompt or an operating-system authentication request is an access check for the stored credentials; it does not by itself indicate that the export has failed.

Step 2: Export the Firefox logins to CSV
- On the saved-password page, open the three-dot menu.
- Choose Export Logins… or Export Passwords….
- Read Firefox’s confirmation warning. Exporting creates a file in which the credentials can be read directly.
- Confirm that you want to proceed.
- If prompted, enter the Firefox Primary Password or complete the device-authentication step.
- Choose a local filename and a private location, then save the CSV.
Mozilla describes this export as a way to back up saved usernames and passwords or move them to another application. The file is not an encrypted Firefox backup. Mozilla Support warns: “Your passwords in the exported file will not be encrypted and will be in a readable form to anyone who can view this file.” Treat the CSV as equivalent to a document containing every exported password.
Step 3: Find the destination manager’s current import instructions
Do not assume that every password manager accepts Firefox’s CSV directly. Mozilla’s documented CSV-import procedure describes importing a file into Firefox itself; it does not establish compatibility with every separate password-manager product. Before selecting the file, open the destination manager’s own help or settings and look for an import option that explicitly mentions Firefox or Firefox CSV.
Import locations vary. Common wording includes Import, Import data, Import passwords, or a setup wizard shown when you first create a vault. Use the manager’s current labels rather than relying on an old screenshot or a generic conversion guide. If its instructions specify a particular file format, column mapping, desktop application, or browser extension, follow those requirements exactly.

- Open the manager’s import screen while keeping the CSV on the same local device.
- Select the source named Firefox, Firefox CSV, or the equivalent option documented by that manager.
- Choose the CSV file you just created. Do not upload it to an unrelated website to “convert” it.
- Review any preview, field-mapping, duplicate, or conflict choices the manager presents. The manager’s instructions determine which option is appropriate.
- Start the import and wait for the completion message. If the manager reports skipped or invalid records, save that information so you can investigate those entries before deleting the Firefox copies.
When the manager does not list Firefox
An absent Firefox option does not prove that the manager can never import the file, but it does mean compatibility has not been established by the manager’s documented workflow. Check its supported-source list and current help pages, or contact its support team. Do not rename the CSV, edit columns, or pass it through an online converter unless the manager’s own instructions specifically require and explain that process. For a small number of accounts, manually creating entries in the manager may be safer than experimenting with an untrusted conversion service; retain the Firefox records until every manual entry has been checked.
Step 4: Verify the imported entries before removing anything
Import completion is not the same as a successful migration. Verify records while the original Firefox entries are still available.
- Open several imported entries in the destination manager and compare the site address, username, and password with the corresponding Firefox record.
- Include a site with more than one saved login. This checks whether the manager kept separate usernames instead of merging them.
- Check a recently changed password and an older entry so that you test more than one kind of record.
- Use the manager’s normal autofill or copy-and-paste process on a test sign-in page. Confirm that it selects the intended entry and that the credentials work.
- Look for an import report, skipped-record list, or duplicate notice. Resolve those items using the manager’s documented procedure.
- Only after the checks succeed should you decide whether to remove the corresponding saved logins from Firefox.
Keep Firefox’s copies during verification. If an entry is missing or wrong, you can return to the original record without having to reconstruct the password. A migration is complete when the manager contains the accounts you need, the tested credentials work, and you have dealt with any reported conflicts or omissions.

Step 5: Delete the temporary CSV
Delete the export as soon as the import and verification are finished. Mozilla’s guidance is explicit: “Do not upload online, email or share the exported file. Delete this file when finished.” Remove the file from the folder where you saved it and empty the operating system’s Recycle Bin or Trash if your normal security practice requires that step. Do not leave another copy in Downloads, an attachment folder, a backup folder, or a file-sync queue.
The CSV-deletion step is separate from deciding whether to delete Firefox’s saved logins. If you want the new manager to be the only place where those credentials remain, remove the Firefox entries only after verification and after confirming that you can unlock and use the manager. If you want Firefox available as a temporary fallback, you can leave its entries in place, but then you have two copies to protect and maintain.
What this migration does—and does not—change
This workflow moves the usernames and passwords Firefox has saved for websites into another application. It does not automatically configure that application on every device, and it does not turn on Firefox Sync. After importing, follow the destination manager’s normal setup instructions on any additional devices where you want to use the new vault.
Firefox’s own import feature is a different direction of travel. Mozilla documents importing passwords from a CSV into Firefox through Settings > Import Data > Passwords from CSV file, or from the Passwords/Logins page by opening the three-dot menu and choosing Import from a File. Those instructions explain how Firefox receives a file; they do not guarantee that another manager accepts Firefox’s export unchanged.
Cost, equipment, and transfer choices
No special physical product is required for this migration. You do not need a hardware security key, encrypted USB drive, journal, or other accessory to perform the export and import. Use the computer on which the Firefox profile and destination manager are available, and keep the temporary file in a private local folder.
The export/import procedure itself is separate from any price or subscription decision for the destination manager. If a manager requires an account, desktop application, or a particular plan for importing, confirm that detail in the manager’s current documentation before exporting. Do not buy a product merely to transport the CSV, and do not choose a service based only on a generic claim that it accepts CSV files; the source format and supported import path must be stated by that manager.

Firefox export security: what the warning means
Firefox’s export is plain readable data. Anyone who can open the file can read the exported usernames and passwords; the CSV should therefore be handled like a secret, not like an ordinary backup. Practical safeguards include:
- Save it only to a local account or folder that other users cannot open.
- Keep the file closed except when selecting it in the destination manager.
- Do not email it, attach it to a ticket, place it in a shared network directory, upload it to cloud storage, or paste its contents into a chat or web form.
- Do not create extra copies merely to make the transfer more convenient.
- Delete it immediately after successful import and verification.
Firefox may request the Primary Password or device authentication before showing or exporting credentials. That protection controls access to the stored logins; it does not encrypt the CSV that is produced after you approve the export.
Migration versus Firefox Sync
Choose the method according to where you want the credentials to live.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Goal | Appropriate route | What it changes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use the passwords in a separate password-manager application | Export Firefox logins to CSV, import through the manager’s official workflow, verify, then delete the CSV | Creates records in the destination manager | Compatibility and exact import steps are specific to that manager |
| Use the same Firefox passwords on additional Firefox devices | Firefox Sync | Makes Firefox login data available across Firefox installations configured for the same Sync account | It does not move the credentials into a separate password-manager application |
| Bring credentials into Firefox from another browser or file | Firefox’s own import function | Adds supported data to Firefox | It is the reverse direction from the migration described here |
Mozilla documents Firefox Sync as the route for using passwords across Firefox devices. Mozilla also notes that Firefox does not save or sync login data from another browser or file unless you deliberately import it. Sync and CSV migration are therefore different operations, not interchangeable names for the same transfer.
Troubleshooting common problems
The export command is not where the instructions say
Open the Firefox application menu and look for Logins and Passwords or Passwords. Once that page is open, use its three-dot menu. Depending on the version or locale, the command can read Export Logins… or Export Passwords…. The wording variation is expected; the key is that you are exporting from the saved-login page, not downloading a browser-history file.
Firefox asks for a Primary Password or device authentication
Complete the authentication if you are authorized to access the profile. Mozilla identifies these prompts as possible requirements when accessing stored credentials. If authentication succeeds, return to the export confirmation and continue. If it fails, do not create a second export by guessing passwords; resolve access to the Firefox profile first.

The destination manager rejects the CSV
Stop before sending the file anywhere else. Recheck the manager’s official supported formats and whether its importer is available only in a particular application. If Firefox is not listed, ask the manager’s support team whether its current importer accepts Firefox’s CSV and what format it expects. Keep the original Firefox entries and the CSV private while you investigate.
The importer reports duplicates or multiple matches
Use the conflict choices described by the destination manager. Do not delete the Firefox copy until you have opened the resulting entries and confirmed that each username, password, and site is represented correctly. A site with multiple saved logins is an especially useful verification case because a careless merge can hide one of the accounts.
Some entries are missing after import
Compare the manager’s import report with Firefox’s list. Record which accounts were skipped, then follow the manager’s documented remedy. If no supported remedy exists, add only the missing records through the manager’s normal entry form or seek support, and verify each one before deleting its Firefox source.
You opened the CSV and can see passwords
Close the file and any application that may have retained its contents. Do not copy or share the text. Finish the import locally, then delete the CSV and remove it from the system’s Trash or Recycle Bin according to your security policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A careful post-migration checklist
- The destination manager’s official documentation confirms how to import a Firefox CSV.
- The export was created from Firefox’s Logins and Passwords or Passwords page.
- Any Primary Password or operating-system authentication prompt was completed by the authorized user.
- The CSV stayed on a private local device and was never emailed, uploaded, or shared.
- Several imported entries were compared with Firefox, including a site with multiple saved logins.
- Autofill or sign-in testing succeeded for representative accounts.
- Skipped records, duplicates, and conflict prompts were resolved or explicitly documented.
- The temporary CSV was deleted after verification.
- Firefox entries were removed only if that is your deliberate choice and the new manager is ready to be the authoritative copy.
What not to do
- Do not treat the CSV as encrypted backup data.
- Do not upload it to a “free converter,” send it by email, or place it in a shared drive.
- Do not assume that a manager accepts Firefox’s format merely because it imports CSV files from another source.
- Do not erase Firefox’s entries immediately after the import button reports success.
- Do not confuse Firefox Sync with migration to a separate password manager.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I export saved passwords from Firefox?
Open Firefox’s application menu, choose Logins and Passwords or Passwords, open the three-dot menu, and select Export Logins… or Export Passwords…. Confirm the warning, complete any Primary Password or device-authentication prompt, and save the CSV locally.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is the Firefox password-export CSV encrypted?
No. Mozilla says the exported passwords are not encrypted and are readable to anyone who can view the file. Keep the CSV private, never email or upload it, and delete it after import and verification.
Best Value
Will every password manager import Firefox’s CSV?
Not necessarily. Check the destination manager’s current official documentation for a Firefox or Firefox CSV importer. Firefox’s documented import instructions describe bringing a CSV into Firefox, not compatibility with every third-party manager.
Can I use Firefox Sync instead of exporting passwords?
Use Firefox Sync when you want passwords available on additional Firefox devices. Sync does not move credentials into a separate password-manager application, so it is not a substitute for CSV migration.
Why is Firefox asking for my Primary Password during export?
Firefox may require the Primary Password or operating-system authentication before granting access to stored credentials. This is an access check and does not mean the export has failed.
When should I delete my Firefox saved logins?
Keep them until you have checked several imported records, tested sign-in or autofill, and resolved skipped or duplicate entries. Removing Firefox copies is optional; if you keep them, you have two credential stores to protect.
What should I do if the manager reports duplicates or skipped records?
Use the manager’s documented conflict or remediation process, compare affected records with Firefox, and verify each resulting entry. Do not delete the Firefox source until every needed account is represented correctly.
Do I need special hardware or a paid product to move the passwords?
No special physical product is required. Use Firefox, the destination manager’s supported importer, and a private local folder. Any account or plan requirements are specific to the destination manager and should be confirmed in its current documentation.
The Bottom Line
Export Firefox logins to a private local CSV, import it only through the destination manager’s documented workflow, verify representative accounts—including multiple-login sites—and delete the readable CSV immediately afterward. Keep or remove Firefox’s original entries only after you are confident the new manager works.
