For a new Galaxy, Samsung Smart Switch can transfer selected contacts from an Android or iPhone. If your contacts already sync to Google, signing in to the same Google Account on the new Android phone may be all you need. Contacts saved only on the old phone or SIM require an extra backup or import step.
Choose the route that matches where your contacts are stored

Before transferring, have both phones available, charge them, and check the old phone’s Contacts app to see whether entries are stored in Google, another account, device storage, or on the SIM. This prevents a common surprise: contacts visible on the old phone may not all belong to the account you plan to use on the new one.

Transfer contacts to a new Galaxy with Smart Switch
Smart Switch is Samsung’s transfer option for moving selected content from an Android or iOS phone to a new Galaxy. You can choose contacts without copying everything. Samsung’s Smart Switch instructions describe wireless and wired transfers; steps and available options can vary by phone model and software version.
- Open Smart Switch on the new Galaxy. If it is not available, check Samsung’s instructions for your model and region.
- Choose Receive, then select the old phone’s type and a connection method.
- Follow the prompts to connect the phones. For a wired transfer, the old phone sends and the new Galaxy receives.
- When asked what to transfer, choose the option for accounts, calls, contacts, and messages, or use a custom selection that includes contacts. You do not have to select everything.
- Start the transfer, keep both phones available, and check the Contacts app on the new Galaxy when it finishes.
Samsung’s US support guidance suggests wireless transfer when a transfer is expected to take a long time and both phones need charging. A wired connection may be more convenient when the phones can be connected, but the cable must fit both devices. Some older Galaxy packages included a USB-OTG adapter; newer models may not, so check the exact phone combination rather than expecting one in the box.

Samsung Newsroom’s September 16, 2026 article describes a QR-based Smart Switch route that does not require installing the app on an iOS device, but ties that detail to One UI 9 and the eighth-generation Galaxy Z series. It should not be assumed to apply to every Galaxy. Samsung Newsroom’s article gives that model-specific context.
Use Google sync when the contacts are already in your account
If the old phone saved contacts to a Google Account, add that same account to the new Android phone. Google says those contacts appear after sign-in, so check this before running a full device-to-device transfer.

If some names are missing, they may be stored only on the old phone or SIM rather than in Google. On supported Android devices, Google Contacts offers a setting to automatically save device-only and SIM contacts to a selected Google Account. Availability depends on the device make and model; Google’s guidance also notes limitations for work or school Google Workspace accounts and child accounts. See Google’s instructions for syncing device and SIM contacts and confirm the contacts appear in the account before relying on it for the new phone.
Import SIM contacts or export contacts manually
If the contacts are on a SIM, or you need to move locally stored entries, use the Contacts app’s import/export tools. On many Samsung phones, start at Contacts > Manage contacts > Import or export contacts, then choose the available source or destination, such as SIM or SD card. The exact labels and destinations depend on the model and software version. Samsung’s contact management guidance covers importing and exporting.

- On the old phone, open Contacts and find the import/export option.
- Choose the source for the contacts, such as the SIM, or export the selected contacts if that is the available route.
- Select a destination offered by the phone, such as a Google Account or device storage, and complete the prompts.
- On the new phone, import the file or SIM contacts if they have not already synced to an account.
- Open Contacts and verify that the expected entries are present.
For a transfer by cable, first check the ports on both phones. Google’s Android transfer guidance says the cable must fit both devices and an adapter may be needed. A compatible USB-C data cable is optional for a wired route; wireless transfer and Google account sync do not require buying one.

If some contacts are still missing
- Check the old phone’s contact storage: Look for entries saved to device storage, a SIM, or an account other than Google. Move or sync those entries separately.
- Confirm the account: Make sure the new phone is signed in to the same Google Account that held the contacts. If using another supported account, add that account too.
- Check the transfer selection: If you used Smart Switch, confirm contacts were included in the selected categories.
- Check import results: For SIM or manual import, verify the source and destination chosen in Contacts and look for the entries in the new phone’s Contacts app.
