On a Samsung Galaxy model with microSD support, use My Files to move or copy pictures from internal storage to the card. Open the picture files, choose Move or Copy, then select SD card as the destination. The card appears in My Files only when it is inserted, and not every Galaxy phone or tablet has an SD-card slot. Samsung’s microSD guide explains the transfer workflow and compatibility caveat.
Before you start: check that your Galaxy supports microSD
Samsung cautions that microSD support varies by Galaxy model. Check the specifications for your exact phone or tablet before buying a card or following these steps. Once a compatible card is inserted, it should appear as SD card in My Files. Menu names and availability can vary with device and software version. Samsung’s compatibility and transfer guidance covers these limits.

How to move pictures to an SD card on a Samsung phone
For camera photos, the usual folder is Internal storage > DCIM > Camera, as described in Samsung UK’s My Files guide. The steps below move or copy the files themselves; use My Files rather than Gallery for this transfer, according to Samsung US Support.
- Insert a compatible microSD card into the device.
- Open My Files.
- Tap Internal storage, then open DCIM and Camera. To select pictures from more than one folder, Samsung also documents using the Images category in My Files; selection controls can vary by version.
- Touch and hold a picture to select it. Tap any additional pictures you want to include.
- Tap Move to relocate the selected files, or Copy to leave the originals in internal storage.
- Return to the My Files home screen and tap SD card.
- Open the folder where you want the pictures saved, then tap Move here or Copy here.
Move or copy: which should you choose?
- Move relocates the selected pictures to the card; the source files are removed from their original location as part of the operation.
- Copy creates a copy on the card while keeping the originals in internal storage.
If you want a second copy rather than a relocation, use Copy and check that the pictures are present on the card before deleting anything from internal storage. Samsung distinguishes these actions in its My Files transfer instructions; they do not describe Move as a backup operation.

Why Gallery albums are different
Gallery is for viewing and organizing pictures, while Samsung directs users to My Files to transfer picture files to an SD card. Samsung UK documents creating an album on an SD card in Gallery on compatible devices, and its Gallery guide covers moving or copying pictures between albums. Those album actions are distinct from moving the underlying files between storage locations. See Samsung UK’s SD-card guide and Samsung’s Gallery guide.
Save new camera photos to the card
On supported devices, the Camera app may offer a Storage location setting that lets new photos save to the SD card. Availability is model-dependent; first confirm the device supports microSD, then look in the Camera settings for that option. Samsung’s UK guide to SD cards documents this setting.

Troubleshooting: the SD card or pictures are missing
SD card does not appear in My Files
Check that the card is inserted and that your Galaxy model supports microSD. Samsung says the SD-card destination appears only when a card is inserted. If your device has no SD slot, these steps cannot use an SD-card destination. Samsung describes external USB storage as an option on supported models, but that requires a different workflow. Samsung’s microSD support page and Samsung Singapore’s file-management guide provide the relevant device caveats.

Camera pictures are not in the folder you expected

Move and Copy are unavailable or the steps look different
Samsung notes that labels and controls can vary by model and software version. Confirm you are selecting files in My Files, not trying to transfer them through Gallery. Samsung’s file-management guide also documents copying and moving files to external storage.
