Start the transfer during the new phone’s setup when possible, keep both devices charged and nearby, and don’t erase or trade in the old phone until you’ve checked your photos, messages, and other important data.
Before you start: identify your route and prepare both phones
Use the instructions for your direction of travel. Same-platform transfers and cross-platform moves do not carry the same data, and available options can depend on the exact models, operating-system versions, account access, carrier, and storage.

- Charge both phones and have the old phone’s screen-lock code ready.
- Connect to Wi-Fi where the setup flow requires it, and make sure you can sign in to the Apple Account or Google Account used for your backup.
- Back up the old phone before starting. Check that a cloud or computer backup exists and note its date if you may need to restore it.
- Keep the old phone intact until you have confirmed the new phone has the data you need.
A cable can be useful where both devices and the selected transfer method support a wired connection. Check the instructions for your phone models and use a cable with connectors and capabilities compatible with both; a cable is not required for every route.

Move from iPhone to iPhone
Use Quick Start when both iPhones are available
Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the old iPhone, unlock it, and place it near the new iPhone. Follow the Quick Start prompts, then choose to transfer directly from the old device or download from iCloud. Keep both phones near each other and connected to power as instructed. With an iCloud download, apps and data can continue downloading in the background, so you may be able to use the new iPhone sooner. A direct transfer requires waiting for the transfer to finish before using either phone. Apple says timing varies with network conditions and the amount of data being transferred. Restore a backup if the old iPhone is unavailable
During setup, choose an iCloud backup and check its date and size so you select the intended one. If you already finished setting up the new iPhone, Apple’s documented iCloud restore process requires erasing it first. Erasing removes data currently on that phone, so preserve anything you need before proceeding. Apple also documents restoring from a Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes backup; an unencrypted computer backup omits Health and Activity data. Move from Android to Android
Copy directly during setup
On the new Android phone, choose the option to copy data from an Android device and follow the on-screen pairing instructions. Unlock the old phone, select the categories to copy, and leave the devices powered while the transfer runs. Google recommends charging both phones, signing in to a Google Account, backing up the old phone, and having Wi-Fi available. Restore from a Google backup or sync items afterward
If the old phone is unavailable, sign in to the Google Account during setup and select an available backup. You may need the old phone’s PIN, pattern, or password. After signing in, contacts saved to that Google Account should appear; cloud-backed photos can be viewed in Google Photos, and files can be retrieved from Drive or copied using a computer. Music streaming libraries generally return when you install the service app and sign in.

Use Move to iOS during iPhone setup
Start while setting up the iPhone: choose the option to set it up without another Apple device, then select the move-from-Android route. Open Move to iOS on the Android phone, connect using the temporary Wi-Fi network or a supported cable, enter the code shown on the iPhone, and choose what to move. Keep both phones powered and undisturbed until the iPhone’s progress bar finishes. Apple warns that using another app or receiving a call on Android before completion can prevent some content from transferring.

Apple lists contacts; message history and SMS; camera photos, videos, and albums; files and folders; accessibility and display settings; web bookmarks; email accounts; WhatsApp messages and media; Voice Memos; call history; and calendars among the transferable categories. Some free apps may be matched if they are available in both stores and support transfer. Music, books, and PDFs need to be moved manually. App availability does not guarantee that every app login, subscription, paid license, or app-specific item will carry over. Move from iPhone to Android
Pick the supported transfer route for your Android phone
Google documents a classic transfer using a cable or the Android Switch app, plus an upgraded transfer available on selected devices. The upgraded option is limited to certain Pixel and Samsung devices and depends on rollout and compatibility, so check the instructions for your specific model rather than assuming it is available.

Google’s comparison shows photos and videos, contacts, and calendars across the listed methods. Messages and apps are supported in the classic cable and upgraded wireless flows; files, passwords and passkeys, Wi-Fi networks, call history, and eSIM support depend on the upgraded path in Google’s table. Handle iMessage, WhatsApp, purchases, and iCloud photos separately where needed
For Google’s classic route, turn off iMessage on the old iPhone after transferring so new messages can reach the Android phone. eSIM transfer depends on the device and carrier. WhatsApp timing also differs: the classic route may offer a transfer during setup, while the upgraded method handles WhatsApp separately after the initial transfer. If photos are stored in iCloud, Google points users to Apple’s privacy portal to request a copy for Google Photos. Paid iPhone apps do not automatically become Android licenses; ask the app developer about purchased apps.

Check the new phone before wiping the old one
Once the transfer flow reports completion, open the actual items you care about rather than relying only on a progress indicator. A transfer can cover some categories without moving every app’s account state or content.
- Open several recent and older photos and videos, and check albums where relevant.
- Check message history and send or receive a test message if appropriate for your route.
- Open essential apps, sign in, and verify any data that matters inside them.
- Confirm contacts, calendars, and files you rely on are present.
- Complete any applicable iMessage, eSIM, or WhatsApp steps for your transfer method.
Keep the old phone until these checks are done. Google explicitly advises erasing it only after confirming the data copied successfully.
