Samsung Smart Switch moves selected photos, contacts, messages, videos, documents and, where supported, apps from an Android phone or iPhone/iPad to a Galaxy device. You do not have to buy a cable: wireless transfer is available, while a compatible cable or adapter provides a wired option. The exact items available depend on the source device and the route you choose, so keep the old phone until you have checked the new Galaxy.
What Smart Switch moves—and what it does not
Smart Switch is Samsung’s migration utility for bringing content to a Galaxy device. Samsung’s US support page says the supported destination is Galaxy; it is not a tool for transferring data to an iPhone. The categories shown during setup depend on the connected devices and the connection method. See Samsung’s current compatibility list at Content that can be transferred with Smart Switch.

| Source and route | Content Samsung documents as available | Important qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| Android phone to Galaxy | Contacts, messages, photos, videos, documents and apps; some transfers can include additional Galaxy-specific data or app data. | The connected Android model, software and selected route determine which categories appear. Smart Switch does not guarantee every app record or login. |
| iPhone or iPad by cable | Contacts, messages, photos, videos, documents and recommended apps in the documented iOS workflow. | Apple-owned apps themselves cannot be transferred as apps. They can be downloaded again on Android when an Android version exists. |
| iPhone or iPad through iCloud | Relevant iPhone/iPad content that Samsung makes available through its iCloud workflow. | You must authenticate to the account used for the iCloud backup. The categories offered can differ from the cable route. |
| Computer or external storage | Samsung also documents computer and external-storage workflows for moving content to a Galaxy. | The files must first be available to the computer or storage device, and the categories offered still depend on Smart Switch support. |
Content that is already synchronized to an online account may not be copied as a separate local item. Instead, it can reappear after you sign in to that account on the Galaxy. Samsung also lists private-storage content and DRM-protected files among exclusions. For iPhone and iPad migrations, Samsung states: “Passwords and Apple Keychain data are not transferred via Smart Switch.” Read the iPhone/iPad limitations in Samsung’s support instructions at How to transfer data from an iPhone or iPad to a new Galaxy device with Smart Switch.

A few minutes of preparation prevents the most common interruptions. Samsung warns that a low battery can interrupt a transfer, so charge both phones first and keep them close together until the process and its final status screen finish.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Keep the old phone unlocked and available. Do not erase it or remove its accounts yet.
- Charge both devices sufficiently, or connect them to power where practical.
- Install or open Smart Switch on the Galaxy. If the app asks to update, complete the update before connecting the phones.
- Check the ports on both devices if you plan to use a cable. A USB-C-to-USB-C cable may work for two USB-C phones; another combination can require a compatible adapter.
- Make sure the Galaxy has enough free storage for the categories you intend to bring over. Smart Switch will show the selectable categories and any size information it provides.
- For an iCloud transfer, confirm that you can sign in to the Apple account containing the required backup or synchronized content.
Do not treat the preparation list as a promise that every item will copy. It only ensures that the devices are ready to present the transfer choices documented for their particular combination.
Choose wireless, wired, iCloud or computer transfer
There is no universal speed figure or guaranteed completion time in Samsung’s guides. Transfer size, the connection route and device compatibility all affect the result. Choose the method that matches your equipment and source phone rather than assuming one route always wins.
| Route | Choose it when | What you need | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wireless | You want to avoid finding or buying a cable and both phones can remain nearby. | Smart Switch on the Galaxy and the wireless prompts on the old phone. | No port matching, but the phones must stay connected and close during the transfer. |
| USB cable | You already have a cable or adapter that fits both phones and want a direct phone-to-phone connection. | A compatible data cable and, for some port combinations, an adapter. | Requires correct port and cable compatibility; a charging-only or incompatible cable will not establish the required connection. |
| iCloud | You are moving from an iPhone/iPad and prefer Samsung’s documented account-based route instead of connecting the two phones directly. | Internet access and credentials for the Apple account that holds the content. | The available categories differ from the cable method, and passwords and Apple Keychain data are excluded. |
| Computer or external storage | The phones cannot connect directly, or your files are already stored on a computer or supported external medium. | A computer or storage device, plus the appropriate Smart Switch workflow. | It adds an intermediate step and does not bypass Smart Switch’s content restrictions. |
Samsung documents wireless and USB transfer for phone-to-phone moves and also describes computer or external-storage options in Transfer content with Samsung Smart Switch.
Move data from Android to Galaxy wirelessly
Use this route when you do not want to match cables or adapters. Names on the screens can vary by Galaxy software version and region, so follow the wording displayed on your devices.
- On the new Galaxy, open Smart Switch. During initial device setup, you can also choose the data-transfer or import option when it is offered.
- Choose the option that makes the Galaxy the receiving device, then identify the old phone as an Android device.
- Select Wireless (or the equivalent wireless connection choice). The Galaxy will display instructions for connecting the old phone.
- Open Smart Switch on the old Android phone if prompted, approve the connection request and keep both screens active while they establish the link.
- When Smart Switch displays the categories, select the items you want: for example, photos, contacts, messages, videos, documents and any supported apps or app data.
- Review the selection and the amount of data shown. Deselect categories that you do not need if Galaxy storage is limited.
- Start the transfer and leave both phones nearby, powered and unlocked as required by the prompts. Do not disconnect either device until Smart Switch reports completion.
- Dismiss the completion screen only after noting any categories Smart Switch could not transfer. Those notices identify what needs a separate sign-in, download or manual copy.
The wireless route does not make a cable unnecessary in every circumstance: if a particular source-device combination does not offer the category or connection you need, try the wired or documented account route instead.

Move data from Android to Galaxy with a USB cable
A wired connection is optional, but it is useful when you already have compatible hardware. Check both ports before you begin; a USB-C phone pair can generally use a suitable USB-C cable, while different connectors may need an adapter.
- Open Smart Switch on the Galaxy, or choose the transfer option in the Galaxy’s setup flow.
- Set the Galaxy as the receiving device and choose Android as the source.
- Select the wired or USB-cable connection method.
- Connect the phones with the compatible cable and adapter, if one is required. Approve any access or connection prompt shown on either screen.
- Wait for Smart Switch to read the old phone. When its category list appears, select the photos, contacts, messages, videos, documents and supported apps or app data you want.
- Start the transfer. Keep the cable firmly connected and avoid using either phone for tasks that could interrupt the connection.
- When the Galaxy reports that the transfer is complete, disconnect only after the app permits it. Make a note of any excluded category for follow-up.
If the Galaxy does not detect the old phone, the likely first checks are the cable type, adapter fit, both ports and the on-screen permission prompts. If those checks fail, return to the wireless route rather than purchasing an unverified accessory.

Move an iPhone or iPad to Galaxy with a cable
Samsung provides a dedicated iPhone/iPad-to-Galaxy cable procedure. It can bring over contacts, messages, photos, videos and documents, and it can present recommended apps. Recommended apps are suggestions for Android replacements; they are not a transfer of the original Apple app installation.
- On the Galaxy, open Smart Switch or the data-transfer flow offered during setup.
- Choose the receiving/importing option, select iPhone or iPad as the source, and choose the cable route.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the Galaxy with a cable and any adapter required by the two ports.
- Unlock the Apple device and approve the trust, access or connection request if it appears.
- Wait for Smart Switch to scan the source, then select the categories you want to import. Review the list carefully because the available items are not identical to an Android-to-Galaxy move.
- Start the transfer and keep the cable connected until the Galaxy shows completion.
- Review any recommended-app section separately. Download an Android version later from the appropriate app store when one exists; Smart Switch cannot move Apple-owned apps themselves.
Apple passwords and Keychain data are not transferred through this documented method. Plan to sign in to services again using a method available to you; do not expect Smart Switch to recreate those credentials.
Move iPhone or iPad content through iCloud
The iCloud route is intended for people who are moving from an iPhone or iPad and do not want to connect the devices directly. It depends on the account content available to Samsung’s supported workflow, so the categories shown on your Galaxy are the authority for what can be imported.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- On the Galaxy, open Smart Switch or the setup screen’s data-transfer option.
- Choose iPhone or iPad as the source and select the iCloud option when it is offered.
- Sign in with the Apple account associated with the iCloud content you want to retrieve, following the authentication prompts.
- Allow Smart Switch to load the available categories. Select the content you want and review the summary before starting.
- Begin the import and keep the Galaxy connected to the required network until Smart Switch finishes.
- Check the completion report. Items that were only synchronized through an account may require you to sign in to that account on the Galaxy instead of receiving a local copy.
This route does not transfer Apple passwords or Keychain data. Apple-owned apps also remain unavailable as transferred installations, although compatible Android versions may be downloaded separately.

Use a computer or external storage as an intermediate step
Samsung’s US instructions also describe moving content through a computer or external storage. This is useful when a direct phone-to-phone connection is impractical or when your files already reside in an intermediate location.
- Choose the computer or external-storage workflow in Smart Switch on the Galaxy, following the current prompts for that device.
- Make the old phone’s supported content available to the computer or storage device using the method appropriate to that source.
- Connect the computer or storage device to the Galaxy as instructed and allow Smart Switch to scan it.
- Select the categories Smart Switch recognizes, then start the import.
- Wait for the completion message before disconnecting the storage device, and verify the resulting files on the Galaxy.
This method is not a way around unsupported formats, private storage or DRM restrictions. If Smart Switch does not list a file or category, use the account, app or service that owns that content to retrieve it instead.
Choose the categories carefully
Photos and videos
Select photos and videos in the category screen, then verify them in the Galaxy’s Gallery after completion. A file that exists only in protected storage or is subject to DRM may be excluded. Photos synchronized through an online account can appear after you sign in to that account rather than through the transfer itself.
Contacts
Contacts can be offered for Android and iOS migrations, but their source matters. Contacts stored in an account may synchronize when that account is added to the Galaxy, so a missing contact is not proof that the transfer failed. Check both the imported contacts and the accounts you normally use.

Messages
Messages are a documented category in the supported phone-to-Galaxy workflows. Check the Galaxy’s messaging app after the transfer and look for any category-specific notice in Smart Switch’s completion report.
Apps and app data
Android transfers may expose apps or additional app data, while the iPhone/iPad workflow presents recommended apps rather than Apple app installations. An app can therefore be listed as unavailable, recommended for download or transferred without every service record inside it. App-specific data and logins should be checked inside each important app.
Documents and other files
Documents are among the categories Samsung lists for relevant Android and iOS routes. Private-storage content and DRM-protected files are exclusions Samsung identifies, so compare the source folders with what Smart Switch reports rather than assuming a complete file-system clone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the Galaxy before retiring the old phone
Use this checklist immediately after Smart Switch finishes. It separates a successful transfer from content that needs an account sign-in or a separate download.
- Open Gallery and spot-check recent, older and video items.
- Open Contacts and search for several names, including contacts that were stored under different accounts.
- Open Messages and check recent conversations as well as an older thread.
- Review the app list. Open the apps you rely on and confirm whether their records, subscriptions and sign-ins are present.
- Install Android versions of recommended or missing apps where appropriate.
- Add or sign in to the accounts that previously synchronized your contacts, photos or other content, then allow their data to appear.
- Check documents and other files in the locations where you expect them.
- Read Smart Switch’s completion summary for excluded or unsupported categories.
Keep the old phone intact until these checks are complete. This gives you a source for another attempt or for retrieving an item that was excluded by Smart Switch.

Troubleshoot missing content or an interrupted transfer
The transfer stopped or never began
Charge both phones and restart the Smart Switch flow. Low battery can interrupt a transfer. For a wired attempt, recheck that the cable carries data, that any adapter fits both ports and that each phone’s access prompt was accepted. If the connection remains unreliable, switch to wireless or the documented computer route.
A category is not listed
Smart Switch’s supported list changes with the source device and route. A category missing from the selection screen is not available through that particular connection. Try the route Samsung documents for your source—for example, the iCloud workflow for relevant iPhone content—or retrieve the item by signing in to the service that synchronizes it.
Photos or contacts appear only after signing in
That behavior is expected for content maintained by an online account. Add the same account to the Galaxy and allow synchronization, then check the relevant app again. Do not create duplicate local copies unless you specifically need them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAn app is missing, or its data is empty
For Android, Smart Switch may support an app or some app data without reproducing every service record. For iPhone and iPad, Apple-owned apps cannot be transferred as apps; install compatible Android versions instead. Open each critical app and complete its own sign-in or restore process.
A password or saved credential did not arrive
Samsung explicitly excludes passwords and Apple Keychain data from the documented iPhone/iPad transfer. Smart Switch should not be expected to recreate those credentials. Use the account’s supported sign-in or recovery process on the Galaxy.
Protected files are absent
Private-storage content and DRM-protected files are among Samsung’s listed exclusions. Look for an export or download function in the service that owns the files rather than repeatedly rerunning Smart Switch.
Which method should you use?
Choose wireless when avoiding a cable is more important than having a direct physical connection. Choose wired when you already have a compatible cable or adapter and both phones’ ports support it. For an iPhone or iPad, choose the cable route when you want the direct device workflow, or iCloud when the account-based method better fits your setup. Use a computer or external storage when direct phone-to-phone transfer is not practical. In every case, let Smart Switch’s category screen and completion report define what was actually supported.
Smart Switch is therefore best treated as a guided migration of supported categories, not a perfect clone of the old phone. Photos, contacts, messages and documents are commonly offered, while app installations, app-specific records, account-synchronized data, passwords, private files and protected media require closer checking or a separate recovery path.
