Obsidian also has an official Google Keep importer, but Obsidian is not open-source and its importer does not bring across reminders, user assignments, or checklist indentation.
What transfers out of Google Keep
Google’s export service can download Keep note text and list items, attachments such as voice recordings, drawings and images, colors, pinned and archived state, collaborators, and labels. The official instruction is available in Google Keep Help’s export guide. Export availability can depend on the account: some work or school accounts may restrict or exclude data from download.

An export is not the same as a guarantee that every field will look identical in another application. The destination importer decides how it maps Keep’s data model to its own notes, tags, resources and metadata. Check representative notes before treating the migration as complete.

Choose the destination before exporting
Joplin: the open-source-focused route
Joplin is the practical choice when an open-source destination is a requirement. Its Google Keep To Joplin plugin listing describes support for notes, checklists, attachments, labels, creation and update timestamps, and selected metadata. Metadata represented as tags can include color and archived, pinned or trashed state, using a GoogleKeep/ prefix.

The plugin imports selected JSON files from the unzipped Takeout archive into the notebook you currently select. It does not claim that every Keep feature or collaboration rule becomes a native Joplin equivalent, so inspect the result rather than relying on the listing as a fidelity guarantee.
Obsidian: a documented alternative, not an open-source app
Obsidian has an official import workflow documented in Obsidian Help. It requires the official Importer community plugin and works from a Google Takeout archive. If open-source licensing is non-negotiable, use Joplin instead; Obsidian is included here because its importer is a well-documented option for readers who prioritize its vault and Markdown workflow.
Obsidian’s importer has two explicit limitations that matter for Keep users: checklist indentation is unavailable in the source export, and reminders and user assignments are not imported. The importer can expose the original Keep title to a template as {{source.title}}.

Step 1: Create and download a Google Takeout archive
- Open Google Takeout and start a new export.
- Clear products you do not need, then select Keep.
- Continue to the export settings, choose the delivery method and create the export.
- Wait for Google to prepare the archive, then download the ZIP file when Google makes it available.
- Store the ZIP in a safe location and make an untouched backup copy. Do not delete notes from Keep or overwrite this archive while you are testing the destination.
The archive is your recovery copy. It also lets you repeat the import if you discover that a plugin setting, notebook selection or file selection was wrong. If the Keep account is managed by an employer or school, confirm that the administrator permits Takeout and that the resulting archive includes the data you expect.

Step 2: Import the archive into Joplin
Extract the files
- Unzip the downloaded Takeout archive into a new working folder. Keep the original ZIP unchanged.
- Open the extracted Keep folder. According to the plugin instructions, each note is represented by a JSON file alongside attachments and other files.
- Do not rename or reorganize files before importing. Keeping the archive’s relationships intact makes it easier to identify a missing attachment or retry the process.
Install the importer
- Open Joplin’s plugin manager and find Google Keep To Joplin.
- Install and enable the plugin.
- Check the plugin’s current listing and Joplin compatibility before importing. The listing recorded version 1.0.5, a minimum Joplin version of 3.5, and a last update of 2026-02-08; those values can change.
Import selected notes
- Select the Joplin notebook that should receive the notes. The plugin imports into the currently selected notebook, so confirm this selection before opening the command.
- Choose Tools → Import Google Keep Notes.
- When the file picker appears, select the Keep JSON files you want to import. For a first pass, select a small representative group rather than the entire archive.
- Allow the plugin to process the notes and attachments. Then open several imported notes in Joplin and compare them with the corresponding notes in Keep.
- After the sample passes inspection, repeat the command for the remaining JSON files or import the complete set, depending on the plugin’s current selection behavior.
The plugin listing says Joplin can import note text, checklists, attachments, labels, creation and update timestamps, and selected metadata. It describes color and archived, pinned or trashed state as metadata represented with GoogleKeep/ tags. That representation is useful for filtering, but it may not resemble Keep’s visual interface or produce a native Joplin pin/archive control.
Step 3: Import the same archive into Obsidian, if you choose that workflow
Install the official Importer plugin
- Open Obsidian and go to Settings → Community plugins.
- Turn off restricted mode if Obsidian asks you to do so, then browse for the official Importer community plugin.
- Install and enable Importer.
Run the Google Keep import
- Open the command palette or the Importer ribbon command.
- Choose the Google Keep import option.
- Point the importer at the Google Takeout archive and follow its prompts to choose the destination vault and import settings.
- If you use an importer template, the original Keep title is available as
{{source.title}}. - Open a sample of the resulting notes and their attachments before importing the rest of the archive or removing anything from Keep.
Obsidian’s documentation is explicit about what is not available: Keep does not export checklist indentation in a form the importer can recover, and reminders and user assignments are not imported. A flat checklist may therefore look different from a nested list in Keep even when the individual items arrived. Any reminder schedule or assignment that matters should be recreated manually in the destination system.
Validate the migration before relying on it
Do not validate only a few plain text notes. Build a test sample that exercises the fields most likely to expose differences.

- Text-heavy note: compare the title, paragraphs, line breaks and list items.
- Checklist note: check completed and incomplete items, ordering and any nesting. Obsidian cannot restore Keep’s checklist indentation.
- Attachment note: open at least one image, drawing and voice recording if your library contains them. Confirm that files open and remain associated with the intended note.
- Label-heavy note: verify every important label and learn whether the destination stores it as a tag, property or other metadata.
- Pinned or archived note: locate the imported representation and confirm that it is searchable or filterable.
- Collaborative note: compare the visible author or collaborator information, but do not expect the old sharing permissions to be recreated automatically.
- Reminder note: check whether a date or reminder arrived. In Obsidian, reminders are explicitly not imported.
- Timestamp-sensitive note: compare creation and update dates where your destination exposes them.
Use counts as a sanity check, not as proof of fidelity. A matching number of files can still hide an unlinked image, a flattened checklist or metadata stored in an unexpected tag. Keep the original ZIP and the original Keep library available until your inspection is complete.

Common problems and practical fixes
The Takeout archive is missing Keep
Return to the export configuration and make sure Keep was selected. For a managed work or school account, ask the administrator whether Takeout is restricted. Google states that some work or school account data may not be downloadable, so an empty or incomplete export can be an account-policy issue rather than an importer failure.
Joplin imports into the wrong notebook
The plugin uses the currently selected notebook. Stop the import, select the intended notebook in Joplin’s sidebar, and run Tools → Import Google Keep Notes again. If you already imported into the wrong place, move the notes inside Joplin after checking for duplicate titles and attachments.
Only some Joplin notes appear
Confirm that you selected the JSON files rather than only the ZIP or an unrelated folder. Compare the selected files with the extracted Keep directory, then retry with a small group. Importing in batches makes it easier to identify a malformed or unexpectedly structured file.

Keep the extracted folder intact and retry from a fresh copy. Check that the attachment files were extracted alongside the JSON files and that the imported note points to the expected resource. Test more than one attachment type; success with an image does not establish that a voice recording or drawing was handled identically.

Obsidian checklists look flat
This is an exporter limitation documented by Obsidian, not a setting you can enable after the fact. Keep does not provide checklist indentation in the export, so nested structure must be rebuilt manually if it is important.
Reminders or assignments disappeared
Obsidian explicitly excludes reminders and user assignments from its Google Keep importer. Record those items separately before migration or recreate them in the destination’s task and sharing features. Do not delete the Keep originals until that work is complete.
Labels look different after import
In Joplin, inspect tags beginning with GoogleKeep/; the plugin listing describes that prefix for selected Keep metadata. In another destination, labels may be converted to tags or plain text. Search for a known label and inspect several notes before designing a new tag hierarchy.

Preserve a portable backup after moving to Joplin
Once your Joplin library is correct, create a Joplin-native backup as well as retaining the original Google archive. Joplin’s documentation on importing and exporting describes JEX as a tar-based Joplin export that is lossless for Joplin data. It preserves notes and metadata such as geolocation, updated time and tags, and it can be imported back into Joplin.
JEX is a recovery format for Joplin, not a universal migration format for arbitrary note applications. Keep both artifacts: the original Takeout ZIP preserves the source representation, while JEX preserves the post-import Joplin library. Joplin also documents HTML and PDF export options when you need readable copies rather than a complete Joplin restore.
A migration plan that minimizes risk
- Inventory important notes. Identify notes containing attachments, checklists, labels, archive or pin state, collaborators and reminders.
- Export once, preserve the source. Create the Takeout ZIP and make a backup copy before changing the Keep library.
- Choose the destination deliberately. Select Joplin when open-source software is a requirement; consider Obsidian only when its workflow is more important than that requirement and its stated limitations are acceptable.
- Run a small import. Use representative JSON files in Joplin or a small archive sample in Obsidian.
- Compare difficult notes. Open attachments, checklists, labels, pinned or archived notes and timestamp-sensitive entries.
- Import the remainder. Continue only after the sample behaves as expected and you know where destination metadata appears.
- Back up the result. For Joplin, create a JEX export after validation; retain the untouched Takeout ZIP separately.
- Retire Keep only when ready. Keep the source account or archive until you have finished recreating reminders, assignments and any collaboration arrangements that did not transfer.
Which route should you use?
Use Joplin if the destination must be open-source and your priority is moving a broad set of Keep fields through a dedicated importer. Its published plugin capabilities cover checklists, attachments, labels, timestamps and selected metadata, but you should still verify your own archive.
Use Obsidian if you specifically want its vault-based workflow and accept that it is not open-source. Its official importer provides a direct path from Takeout, while its documentation clearly excludes reminders and assignments and cannot reconstruct checklist indentation.
Neither set of documentation supplies a controlled, side-by-side fidelity test or a universal success rate. The defensible choice is therefore feature-based: compare the fields that matter in your library, test representative notes, and preserve the source archive until the result is trustworthy.
