The safest way to move from a Pixel to a Samsung Galaxy is Samsung Smart Switch. Install or open Smart Switch on both phones, make the Pixel the sending phone, make the Galaxy the receiving phone, then choose a wireless or cable transfer. Smart Switch can offer photos, videos, messages, contacts, call logs, documents, music and apps, but the exact list depends on the two devices.
A completed transfer is not proof that every app account, game save, download or private setting moved. After Smart Switch finishes, sign in to the Google accounts that contain synced data, verify your important content on the Galaxy, and use separate backup tools for apps such as WhatsApp. Keep the Pixel unchanged until those checks are complete.

What Smart Switch can and cannot move
Smart Switch is Samsung’s documented Android-to-Galaxy migration route. The Galaxy receives the content and the Pixel sends it. During the scan, Smart Switch shows the categories available for that particular phone combination; the displayed choices take precedence over a generic list.
Recommended Free Tools
| Content | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Photos and videos | Normally offered as transferable media when stored in accessible locations on the Pixel. |
| Text messages | Message history is an Android transfer category; inspect the result on the Galaxy, including important attachments. |
| Contacts | Device-stored contacts can be offered. Contacts synchronized to an account may return when that account is added to the Galaxy rather than being copied by Smart Switch. |
| Call logs | Listed by Samsung as an Android category, subject to what the connected phones expose. |
| Calendar and schedules | Some calendar information can be offered. Account-synchronized calendars are accessed by signing in to the relevant account. |
| Music and documents | Supported files may be selectable, but location, format and device restrictions affect availability. |
| Apps | Smart Switch can offer apps, generally by reinstalling compatible versions. An app icon does not guarantee that private app data, logins or settings came with it. |
| Synced-account data | Samsung says this is not transferred through Smart Switch. Add the same Google or other supported account on the Galaxy to synchronize it. |
| Private app storage and game progress | Samsung says private-storage app data cannot be backed up and specifically warns that game data is not transferred. |
These limits are why the migration has two parts: copy what Smart Switch offers, then restore account-based and app-specific data through each service’s supported method.

Prepare both phones before connecting them
A few minutes of preparation prevents most interrupted transfers and makes it easier to detect missing data.
Charge, unlock and update
- Charge both phones, or keep them connected to power where the chosen method allows it.
- Make sure the Pixel can be unlocked and that you know its screen lock.
- Finish any pending setup on the Galaxy far enough to open Settings and Smart Switch.
- Install Smart Switch on the Pixel if it is not already available. The Galaxy normally includes it or exposes it through Settings search.
- Check free storage on the Galaxy. A transfer cannot complete if the destination runs out of space.
Choose a connection
For wireless transfer, install Smart Switch on both phones, place them within about four inches of each other, and keep them on chargers if possible. Wireless is convenient when you do not have the right cable, but both phones must remain close and connected while permissions are exchanged.
For a cable transfer, use a data-capable cable that fits both phones. A charging-only cable will not carry the migration. Some Pixel/Galaxy combinations require a USB-OTG adapter; the connector arrangement on your particular phones determines whether one is needed. Wired Smart Switch supports more types of content according to Samsung, but the phones may be less convenient to keep charging during the connection.

Open important apps on the Pixel and look for their own account-sync, export or backup control. This is especially important for games, password managers, authenticator apps, offline downloads, editing projects and any app whose data is not stored in a cloud account. Do not assume that reinstalling an app restores its private files.
For WhatsApp, enable a current backup on the Pixel before migration. Google says WhatsApp chats and data restore from the cloud after you sign in on the new Android phone and open WhatsApp. Follow the current prompts inside WhatsApp because its screens and requirements can change.

Transfer from Pixel to Galaxy with Smart Switch
Menu names vary slightly by Galaxy model and software version, but the direction is always the same: Send from this phone on the Pixel and Receive on this phone on the Galaxy.
- Open Smart Switch on the Galaxy. Open Settings and search for Smart Switch, or launch the app from the Samsung folder if it is present.
- Choose the receiving role. Tap Receive on this phone, then select Galaxy/Android as the source type.
- Open Smart Switch on the Pixel. Choose Send from this phone.
- Select the same connection method. Choose Wireless on both phones for a wireless transfer, or connect the compatible data cable and choose Cable when prompted.
- Approve the connection. Accept pairing, connection and permission requests on the Pixel. Keep both screens available in case another confirmation appears.
- Wait for the scan. Smart Switch inventories the Pixel and presents the content categories it can offer. The scan result, not a generic checklist, determines what you can select.
- Choose a transfer scope. Select Everything to accept all available categories, or select Custom to review them individually.
- Review the selection. Check the estimated size and deselect items you do not need. Pay particular attention to photos, videos, messages, contacts, call logs, documents and apps.
- Start the transfer. Tap the transfer button and leave the phones close, powered and unlocked as requested. Do not disconnect a cable or restart either phone while the copy is running.
- Wait for completion. Smart Switch displays its own estimate after scanning. Let it finish and read the completion screen rather than relying only on a notification.
If the Galaxy is already set up, Smart Switch remains Samsung’s separate transfer route. Google’s setup-time Android copy is a different process and may be offered only once during initial setup; the available instructions do not establish a universal method for combining both routes or repeating every transfer on every Galaxy model.
Wireless or cable: which should you use?
| Method | Best fit | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wireless Smart Switch | You lack a suitable data cable or want both phones free of a physical connection. | No adapter or cable is required; both phones can remain on chargers. | Requires Smart Switch on both devices, close proximity, stable pairing and permission prompts. The phones must stay near each other throughout. |
| Cable Smart Switch | You have a compatible data cable and, if needed, an OTG adapter. | Samsung says the wired method can move more types of data. | Connector and adapter compatibility matters, and the physical connection can make charging or handling less convenient. |
Neither method guarantees a third-party app’s private storage, game progress or login state. Choose the method you can keep connected and supervised until the completion screen appears.
What happens to Google-synced information?
Samsung says synced-account data is not copied through Smart Switch. If contacts, calendars, email, photos or other information belong to a Google account, add that same account to the Galaxy and allow synchronization to complete. This can make information appear later, which is different from Smart Switch transferring it directly.
On the Galaxy, open the account settings, add the Google account used on the Pixel, and check the relevant Google apps. If you used more than one account, add each required account rather than assuming the primary account contains everything.

Restore and verify your data on the Galaxy
Do not factory-reset, trade in or erase the Pixel immediately. Verification should be deliberate, because an app icon or a partial photo list can look reassuring while important content is still missing.
Run this post-transfer checklist
- Photos and videos: Open Gallery and Google Photos, inspect recent and older items, and check albums, favorites and several large videos.
- Messages: Open the messaging app, scroll through older conversations and open representative photo or video attachments.
- Contacts: Check both device contacts and contacts shown after Google-account synchronization. Search for several names you know should be present.
- Call history: Confirm that recent and older call-log entries appear if you selected call logs.
- Documents and music: Open a sample of important files and verify that they are usable, not merely listed.
- Apps: Compare the Galaxy’s app list with the Pixel. Open important apps, sign in where required and inspect downloads, projects, settings and saved content.
- Security apps: Re-enroll authenticator or security apps using their supported recovery process. Transfer completion does not prove that authentication tokens moved.
- WhatsApp: Restore from the backup through WhatsApp’s current setup prompts and confirm that chats and media are present.
Keep the Pixel intact until these checks pass and any separate app backups are confirmed. This is a prudent recovery step because Smart Switch excludes some private app data and account-synchronized information.
WhatsApp: use its backup and restore path
WhatsApp should be treated separately from the general app transfer. On the Pixel, open WhatsApp’s backup settings and create or confirm a current cloud backup before you begin. Make sure the backup uses the account you intend to use on the Galaxy.
After signing in to the Galaxy with the relevant account, install or open WhatsApp and follow its restore prompts. Google advises that, for a post-setup transfer, you should not open or use WhatsApp on the new phone before the transfer. If WhatsApp was already opened or set up, Google’s troubleshooting guidance includes reinstalling it or clearing its storage before trying the supported restore flow again. Use the prompts currently shown in WhatsApp rather than relying on an old sequence of screens.
Understand Google’s separate Android setup copy
Google’s general “Copy apps & data from an Android to a new Android device” flow can copy data by cable or wirelessly during Android setup. Google says the process may take from a few minutes to over an hour, depending on how much data is moved; that is a general setup estimate, not a guaranteed Smart Switch duration.

Google’s setup guidance lists exclusions that are separate from Samsung’s Smart Switch rules. Depending on the setup path, these can include:
- Downloads such as PDFs.
- Media stored in hidden folders.
- Apps installed outside Google Play.
- Data from apps that do not use Android backup.
- Non-Google accounts and their data.
- Some device settings.
Do not merge this list with Samsung’s complete Smart Switch behavior. Use Smart Switch for the Galaxy destination, then check account synchronization and each important app’s own restore process.

The phones do not connect
- Unlock the Pixel and accept every connection or permission request.
- For wireless mode, confirm Smart Switch is installed on both phones and move them within the recommended close range.
- For cable mode, try a known data-capable cable that fits both connectors and add the required OTG adapter if the phones need one.
- Restart both phones and start the connection again if no pairing request appears.
A category is missing from the scan
Smart Switch only offers categories supported by the connected devices and software. Check that you selected the correct sending and receiving roles, review Custom selections, and confirm that the source phone is unlocked. Account-synchronized information may simply need the relevant account added to the Galaxy instead of being copied.
The transfer stops or reports insufficient space
- Keep both phones powered and avoid using them during the transfer.
- Free storage on the Galaxy, especially if photos, videos or documents are large.
- Reconnect a loose cable or switch to wireless if the physical connection is unstable.
- Run Smart Switch again after confirming that the Pixel still contains the original data.
An app is present but its data is absent
This is expected for some apps. Samsung says private-storage app data cannot be backed up, and its FAQ specifically identifies game data as an item that may not transfer. Open the app’s own backup, export or account-sync settings on the Pixel, then restore using the app’s documented method. Do not delete the Pixel copy until you have recovered important files or progress.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhatsApp chats are missing
Check that a backup was enabled on the Pixel, that the Galaxy uses the same relevant account and phone number, and that WhatsApp’s current restore prompt was followed. If WhatsApp was opened prematurely on the Galaxy, reinstalling it or clearing its storage may be part of Google’s troubleshooting sequence.

When is it safe to erase the Pixel?
Erase or trade in the Pixel only after you have verified irreplaceable photos, message attachments, contacts, documents, app projects, authentication access and WhatsApp chats. Confirm that separate backups are complete and that you can sign in to every important account from the Galaxy. Until then, the Pixel is your recovery copy—not proof that Smart Switch failed, but protection against the documented limits of phone-to-phone migration.
