What this setting controls
Firefox for Android lets you place its address (or navigation) bar at either the top or bottom of the phone screen. The choice changes where you reach the address field, back and forward controls, and related navigation controls; it does not change your bookmarks, open tabs, browsing history, or saved settings.

Mozilla describes this as a built-in layout preference rather than a performance feature. Its help documentation does not establish that either position is faster, safer, or better for every user. Select the position that suits the way you hold and use your phone.
Mozilla’s dedicated navigation-bar instructions were updated on October 2, 2024: Move the navigation bar to the top or bottom of the app in Firefox for Android.

Move the address bar to the top
- Open Firefox for Android.
- Tap the three-dot menu. It is the menu button in Firefox’s toolbar.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Customize.
- Find Address bar location and tap Top.
After you select Top, Firefox places the navigation/address bar along the upper edge of the app window. You can return to the same setting at any time and select Bottom instead.
Check that the change took effect
Return to a normal web page and look at the edge of the Firefox window. The address field and navigation controls should now be above the page content. If the tab bar is also displayed, the address bar appears directly beneath that tab bar rather than at the absolute top of the screen.
What happens when the tab bar is visible
Mozilla’s current toolbar documentation says that showing the tab bar automatically places the address bar at the top, below the tab bar. This is separate from manually selecting Top or Bottom in the address-bar setting.

That means a phone can show a row of tabs at the very top and the address bar immediately below it. If you expected the address field to touch the screen edge, the tab bar may be the reason it does not.

If you cannot find “Customize”
Menu names can differ between Firefox versions and release channels. The standard route documented by Mozilla uses Settings → Customize. A July 2024 Mozilla Support forum discussion from a Firefox Nightly user used the label Address bar settings instead of the older customization wording.

That forum thread is an archived, channel-specific report, not confirmation that stable Firefox has changed its normal menu. If your screen does not match the steps above, identify the Firefox version and whether it is Stable, Beta, or Nightly before trying alternate instructions.

Nightly and hidden settings
Replies in the archived discussion mention Nightly’s Secret Settings. Those are experimental controls and are not the ordinary fix for a stable installation. Do not treat a hidden or experimental menu as a required step when the regular Address bar location control is available.
You can read the limited version-context discussion here: Pin toolbar to the top’s been removed?. The thread includes a user report that the toolbar moved to the bottom after an update, but it does not establish a widespread current problem or explain every version’s behavior.

Top or bottom: which should you choose?
Firefox documents two positions. The table describes the actual options without implying a universal advantage.

Mozilla’s help material does not provide a speed, battery, security, or accessibility ranking for the two choices. The setting is a personal layout preference.

Troubleshooting checklist
The address bar is still at the bottom
- Reopen Settings → Customize → Address bar location and verify that Top is selected.
- Check whether the tab bar is displayed. With the tab bar visible, Mozilla says the address bar is placed at the top below that tab row.
- Confirm that you are changing Firefox for Android, not another browser or a desktop installation.
- Note the Firefox version and release channel if the visible labels do not match Mozilla’s documented route.
There is no “Customize” entry
- Look for an entry named Address bar settings; this wording was reported by a Nightly user in the archived 2024 forum thread.
- Do not enable Secret Settings merely because the stable instructions are hard to find. Experimental menus can vary by Nightly build.
- Use the version and channel information when asking Mozilla Support for help, because the available forum report is not a general rule for all releases.
The toolbar moved after an update
An archived support discussion contains a user report that the toolbar moved to the bottom after an update. That is evidence of an individual experience, not proof that a particular update changed the layout for everyone. The dependable remedy is to inspect the current address-bar location setting in your installed version.

Does this apply to Firefox on a computer?
No desktop procedure is established by the Mozilla pages cited for this guide. They specifically document Firefox for Android. Firefox on Windows, macOS, and Linux has a different toolbar interface, so do not assume that the Android menu path exists there.
If your question concerns desktop Firefox, identify the operating system and Firefox release before following advice intended for Android. The Android instructions above are for the mobile app only.
Mozilla’s documented terminology
You may see both address bar and navigation bar in support material. In this setting, they refer to the same Firefox toolbar area that contains the web address field and navigation controls. Mozilla’s October 2024 article calls it the navigation bar, while the setting itself is labeled Address bar location in the documented Android steps.
