The dependable way to move OneDrive files to another cloud is to copy them in batches, upload or sync those copies to the destination, verify the result, and only then remove the originals. For a personal account, the usual path is OneDrive download → local extraction → destination upload. An administrator can use Google Workspace’s migration service for an organization moving from OneDrive to Google Drive, but that service has exclusions and is not a consumer shortcut.
Choose the route that fits your account and data
Your best method depends on whether the OneDrive account is personal or managed, how much data you have, and whether preserving permissions and versions matters. The options below are deliberately separated because their capabilities are not equivalent.

| Route | Suitable for | Local storage needed | Who controls it | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Download, then upload | Personal accounts and small-team moves | Usually yes, at least temporarily | The individual user | Creates ZIP archives for multiple selected items. You verify the destination manually. |
| OneDrive sync app, then destination sync folder | Large collections that are awkward to download as browser ZIP files | Yes, unless files are kept online-only and staged in batches | The individual user or local administrator | Can make large transfers more manageable, but both sync clients and the destination’s limits still apply. |
| Google Workspace Data Migration | Organizations moving OneDrive content into Google Drive | Not necessarily on each user’s computer | A Google Workspace administrator | Google performs an administrator-led migration, but restricted, externally owned, blocked, and shortcut content can be excluded. |
| Third-party cloud-to-cloud service | Only when a service has been separately vetted for your accounts and data | Potentially less local staging | The service plus account administrators | Current consumer tools, pricing, authorization terms, and preservation of permissions or versions are not established here. Treat any claim of a seamless transfer cautiously. |
A direct cloud-to-cloud copy can avoid downloading to your computer, but availability and behavior vary by provider. Do not authorize a service until you have checked its current privacy terms, supported destinations, quotas, and ability to handle the file types and sharing model you use.
Prepare before copying anything
Preparation prevents the most expensive failure: believing a move is complete and deleting the only good copy. Work through this checklist first.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
- Confirm the destination quota. Check available capacity, per-file limits, filename rules, supported formats, and any organization policy in the destination service’s current help pages.
- Inventory the source. Record the top-level folders, approximate file counts, and any unusually large or important files. Include photos, archives, project files, and folders shared with you.
- Decide what is actually yours to move. In a work or school OneDrive, material may belong to an organization or another person. Ask the IT administrator before moving managed, shared, confidential, or legally retained content.
- Check access to shared items. OneDrive’s documented download workflow does not download files directly from the Shared view. Open a shared file and use the available save or copy option, or ask the owner to provide a copy.
- Plan staging space. Browser downloads are packaged as ZIP files, so your computer needs room for the archive and the extracted files. If internal storage is insufficient, temporary staging on an external SSD is an option; it is not a OneDrive requirement.
- Choose a batch plan. Smaller, clearly named batches make failures easier to identify and keep the ZIP and extraction process within documented limits.
- Set a validation rule. Decide in advance which folder counts, file samples, permissions, and links must be checked before the source is considered safe to remove.
Manual transfer: download from OneDrive and upload to the new cloud
This is the general-purpose method for a personal account or a small move. Microsoft’s instructions for downloading files and folders are at Download files and folders from OneDrive or SharePoint.
1. Select a manageable batch in OneDrive
Open OneDrive on the web and work from the Files view. Select a top-level folder or a group of files that belongs together. Avoid selecting your entire library simply because the interface allows it: a single failed archive is harder to diagnose than several labeled batches.
Give each batch a useful local name before downloading, such as Projects-2024 or Photos-Phone. Keep a simple list of which source folders belong to each batch. Do not move or rename the source while a batch is being prepared; changing the collection mid-process makes later counts unreliable.
2. Download the batch
- In OneDrive, select the files or folders.
- Choose Download.
- When more than one item is selected, wait for OneDrive to create one ZIP archive.
- Save the archive to a location with enough free space for both the ZIP and its extracted contents.
- Wait for the browser download to finish before closing the tab or putting the computer to sleep.
Microsoft documents a 250 GB file-size limit and a 10,000-file total limit for the relevant download workflow; it also lists a 10,000-file limit for a folder in that context. These are OneDrive download constraints, not universal limits for every destination cloud. Split a larger library into batches below the documented limits. The current Microsoft page also notes that OneNote notebooks and some encrypted or information-rights-managed files may not be included in ZIP downloads, so inspect those categories separately.
3. Extract without changing the structure
Open the downloaded ZIP with your operating system’s archive utility and extract it into a new staging folder. Preserve the folder hierarchy and filenames. Do not drag individual files out of nested folders unless you have a specific reason, because the hierarchy is often the only record of project or date organization.

If extraction reports a damaged archive, an incomplete download, or a filename error, do not upload the partial result. Delete that incomplete extraction, download the same batch again—preferably with fewer items—and compare the resulting top-level folders before continuing.
4. Put the extracted files into the destination
You have two common upload paths:
- Destination website: Open the destination cloud’s web interface, choose its upload control, and select the extracted folder or files. Keep the browser open until the service reports completion.
- Destination sync folder: If the destination provider supplies a desktop sync application, copy the extracted folders into that application’s local sync folder. Leave the computer connected to power and the network while the client uploads.
Upload controls, quotas, filename rules, and per-file limits belong to the destination provider. A successful OneDrive download does not guarantee that the destination accepts every item. Watch for skipped files, renamed duplicates, unsupported formats, or quota warnings and record each exception.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Wait for cloud completion, not just local appearance
A file appearing in a local sync folder means only that the client has noticed it. Open the destination’s web interface and check that representative files are present there. For a large batch, allow the sync status to settle and make sure there are no pending, paused, or error states before starting validation.
6. Verify, then preserve the source
Verification should be deliberate rather than a quick glance at one folder.
- Compare the expected top-level folders with what appears in the destination.
- Compare approximate file counts for each batch. A count difference is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself that data is missing.
- Open representative documents, images, videos, archives, and any unusually large or uncommon formats.
- Check filenames, folder nesting, and modified dates where those details matter to your work.
- Review sharing settings and recreate required collaborators or links in the destination. A manual copy should not be assumed to preserve OneDrive permissions or links identically.
- Keep the OneDrive originals until the checks pass and any exceptions have been resolved.
Only after validation should you archive or delete the source. If the destination has a recycle bin or trash policy, learn its retention period before treating deletion as irreversible.

Limits that affect a OneDrive download
Several Microsoft figures are easy to confuse because they apply to different operations. The table keeps their scope explicit.
Recommended Free Tools
| Figure | Operation and meaning | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 250 GB | Documented OneDrive file-size limit in the listed upload/download or ZIP contexts; it is not a universal limit for every cloud destination. | Microsoft download guidance and Microsoft restrictions and limitations |
| 10,000 files | Maximum total number of files listed for the relevant multi-item OneDrive download operation. | Microsoft download guidance |
| 10,000 files in a folder | Folder-level limit stated on the same download guidance page; split very large folders into smaller selections. | Microsoft download guidance |
| 2,500 files at one time | Limit Microsoft gives for copying through the OneDrive website. This is a copy operation, not the ZIP-download limit. | Microsoft restrictions and limitations |
| 300,000 items | Microsoft’s recommendation for optimum sync performance. It is distinct from hard download or upload limits. | Microsoft restrictions and limitations |
For a very large library, Microsoft recommends using its sync app in relevant transfer guidance. Syncing can be more practical than repeatedly creating browser ZIP archives, but it does not remove destination quotas or the need to verify completion. Keep the source intact while batches are still syncing.
Moving OneDrive files to Google Drive in an organization
Google Workspace organizations have an administrator-led option rather than requiring every user to download and re-upload files. Google describes the service at Data migration to Google Drive and says it can transfer content from Microsoft OneDrive and other providers. This is a business or school administration feature, not a general consumer promise.
What the administrator should plan
- Confirm the Workspace plan and permissions. The administrator should identify the source accounts, destination users or shared drives, and the authorization required to read the source.
- Inventory before migration. List active accounts, shared material, large libraries, externally owned files, and content subject to retention or legal controls.
- Set a migration window. Tell users when copying will occur and ask them not to edit documents, folders, or shared drives during that period. Google warns that changes to content or permissions during migration can create errors and make versions harder to maintain.
- Run the migration from the Google Admin console. Follow the current console prompts for the source and destination mapping, then monitor the job for errors and skipped items.
- Organize and set access after copying. Review destination folders, shared drives, memberships, and permissions instead of assuming that the OneDrive sharing model was reproduced exactly.
- Have users validate representative content. Check important files, versions where relevant, and links before allowing normal editing to resume.
Content Google says may not migrate
Google lists several exclusions: content with restricted permissions, items blocked from download, content created by external users outside the organization, and OneDrive folder shortcuts. The service therefore is not a guaranteed byte-for-byte transfer of every source item. Record excluded items, decide whether an administrator can obtain an authorized copy, and communicate any permanent gaps to affected users.
Google’s migration page describes the capability this way: "You can transfer a variety of files and formats, including content from Microsoft OneDrive, SharePoint Online and Dropbox." The statement is about Google Workspace’s migration service and should not be read as a guarantee that every OneDrive feature, permission, shortcut, or version history will appear identically in Drive.

What may not survive a manual copy
A downloaded file is a copy of file content, not a full recreation of the source service. Treat the following as separate migration tasks:
- Sharing permissions: Recreate collaborators and groups in the destination. Different providers use different roles and inheritance rules.
- Sharing links: Existing OneDrive URLs generally should not be handed out as if they point to the new copy. Create and test destination links after upload.
- Version history: A downloaded file normally represents the copy you obtained, not an automatically reconstructed timeline of prior versions. Preserve critical historical versions through an approved export or administrative process if your organization requires them.
- Shortcuts: A shortcut may point to another location rather than contain the target files. Resolve important shortcuts and confirm their targets separately.
- Special file types: OneNote notebooks and some encrypted or IRM-labeled files may be omitted from OneDrive ZIP downloads. Do not mark those folders complete until they have been checked.
- Metadata: Names, folder placement, and some file dates may carry over, but do not assume every custom field, label, comment, or audit record does.
For work or school data, ask the administrator whether retention, eDiscovery, classification labels, or ownership rules impose additional requirements. A consumer-style download may be inappropriate for regulated or shared records.

The manual route needs temporary room for downloaded archives and extracted files. You can reduce the peak requirement by processing one batch at a time: download one batch, extract and upload it, verify it, then remove only that temporary local copy while retaining the OneDrive source. An external SSD can provide staging room if your computer is short on space.
Do not assume that a cloud-to-cloud service is automatically safer or better. The available products, supported OneDrive destinations, prices, privacy terms, account authorization scope, and treatment of permissions or version history change over time and are not established here. If you evaluate one, require a written answer to these questions before granting access:

Troubleshooting common failures
The download button is unavailable for shared content
OneDrive’s documented workflow does not download directly from the Shared view. Open the item, use an available save-a-copy option, or ask the owner or administrator to provide an authorized copy. Do not bypass a download restriction by using an unapproved tool.

The ZIP is too large or fails partway through
Split the selection into smaller batches, staying below the documented 250 GB and 10,000-file limits. Use clear batch names and wait for each archive to finish. If one folder repeatedly fails, divide that folder again and isolate unusual files such as notebooks or protected content.
Files appear locally but not in the destination website
The destination sync client may still be uploading, paused, or reporting errors. Check its status, then inspect the destination web interface. Keep the computer online until the service reports completion; local presence alone is not validation.
The destination rejects names or formats
Read the destination provider’s current naming and compatibility rules. Record the original path, make the smallest necessary filename adjustment, and maintain a mapping so users can find the renamed item. Re-upload only the affected files and verify them individually.

Counts do not match
First check whether shortcuts, unsupported files, duplicates, hidden system items, or files outside the selected batch account for the difference. Compare the batch inventory with destination error logs, then repeat only the missing subset. Do not delete the source to make counts appear consistent.
Users keep editing during an organization migration
Pause the migration, communicate the migration window again, and let the administrator assess whether changed permissions or content created conflicts. Google specifically cautions that edits during migration can cause errors and make versions harder to maintain.
