Smart Switch transfers eligible data, not a complete iPad clone, and the best route depends on your devices’ ports, available storage, and whether you can get online.
Choose the right transfer method
| Your goal | Best place to start | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Move a large set of eligible data to a new Galaxy | Samsung Smart Switch, using a compatible cable or eligible iCloud import | Transferable content depends on the source and method; some data will not move. |
| Copy selected photos, documents, or other files | External drive or cloud storage | Check connector, adapter, drive format, storage space, accounts, and Galaxy compatibility. |
| Send a few items between nearby devices | Check Samsung Quick Share requirements | Support depends on the exact Galaxy, Apple device, software, and settings. |
Before choosing, consider whether you need a migration or just a few files, whether internet access is available, and whether the content is tied to an app, account, or DRM restriction. A cable that connects to one tablet may not fit the other: iPads may have USB-C or Lightning, and an adapter may be needed for external storage.

Move data to a new Galaxy with Smart Switch
Samsung’s UK guide, updated March 10, 2026, describes starting Smart Switch during Galaxy setup and connecting an iPhone or iPad by cable. The named options are USB-C-to-USB-C and Lightning-to-USB-C; check the ports on both tablets before connecting. Samsung also describes importing eligible content from iCloud. Follow the on-screen prompts and grant the requested permissions.

- On the new Galaxy, begin device setup and choose the iPhone/iPad transfer option when prompted.
- Connect the iPad using a compatible cable. On the iPad, accept the trust prompt if it appears.
- On the Galaxy, review the detected content, select what you want to transfer, and start the transfer.
- If using iCloud instead, follow Smart Switch’s iCloud import prompts and sign in when asked.
Samsung recommends turning off iMessage when transferring all text messages. Its guide says passwords and Apple Keychain data are not transferred. Apple-owned apps cannot be transferred as apps, although corresponding Android apps may be available to download separately. Transferable content varies by device and transfer method; synced-account data may appear after signing in to the relevant account rather than being copied by Smart Switch. DRM-protected media and some data controlled by apps or third-party providers may be excluded. See Samsung’s iPad-to-Galaxy Smart Switch instructions and its Smart Switch content list for details.

Copy selected files with an external drive
An external drive or SD card can act as a hand-carry bridge: copy items from the iPad to the storage device, disconnect it, connect it to the Galaxy, and copy the items onward. Apple documents this workflow through the iPad Files app. An adapter may be needed to connect storage to the iPad.
- Connect the drive or SD card to the iPad. Open Files and copy the selected photos or files to the storage device.
- Eject or disconnect the storage safely, then connect it to the Galaxy. Use a compatible adapter if needed.
- Open the Galaxy’s file-management app, locate the copied items, and copy them into the desired folder on the tablet.
Apple documents APFS, exFAT, and MS-DOS (FAT) formatting for USB-C iPad models. That does not establish that every Galaxy tablet supports every drive or format, so check the exact Galaxy model’s storage, connector, and power requirements first. If you need to format a drive, back it up beforehand: formatting erases its contents. Apple’s instructions are in Transfer files from iPad to a storage device, a server, or the cloud.

Use cloud storage when both tablets can get online
Apple lists iCloud, Box, and Dropbox as examples of cloud storage that can be accessed from Files. Upload or save the selected files from the iPad, then sign in to the same service on the Galaxy and download them. Apple also documents connecting to a file server through Files. Cloud services may charge subscription fees; this route also requires account access, internet connectivity, and enough available storage. Check that the service’s app or browser supports the workflow you need on the Galaxy.
Try nearby sharing only after checking compatibility
Samsung describes Quick Share for photos, videos, and documents and lists iPad (5th generation or later) among supported Apple devices. Its described Apple-side sending action uses AirDrop. This is a conditional option, not a guarantee that every iPad and Galaxy combination will work. Check Samsung’s Quick Share instructions for the exact device, software, and settings requirements before relying on it.
