You can move Chromebook files to Windows with Google Drive, a USB or external drive, or OneDrive. Chrome bookmarks can sync through the same Google Account or be exported as an HTML file and imported into Microsoft Edge. First check whether each file is stored locally or already in Drive, then verify the Windows copy before removing anything from the Chromebook.
Choose how to transfer your files
Use the route that matches where your files are and how you want to access them on Windows. Files already in Google Drive do not need to be copied off the Chromebook first. Local files, including downloads, need an upload or removable storage transfer.

| Route | Best for | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Google Drive | Files already in Drive, or files you can upload and want available in the cloud | Requires internet access, available Drive space and access to the same Google Account on Windows. Wait for uploads to finish before relying on them. |
| USB flash drive or external drive | Offline transfer or a local copy of files | Check that the Chromebook has a compatible port and recognizes the drive’s filesystem. Eject the drive before unplugging it. |
| OneDrive | Files you want stored in Microsoft’s cloud | Upload files or folders through OneDrive in a browser on the Chromebook, then access them in OneDrive on Windows. |
Consider the amount of data, internet availability, cloud storage space, port and filesystem compatibility, and whether you want files stored locally or in the cloud. The documented options do not establish a transfer-speed advantage for any route.

Check where the Chromebook files are stored
- Open the Files app on the Chromebook.
- Look in Downloads, My files and Google Drive for the items you want to move. Files already in Drive are cloud files; local items need to be transferred.
- Protect important downloads before cleaning up or resetting the Chromebook. Google says files are saved to Downloads by default, describes it as a temporary folder, and warns that files there may be removed when storage is low. Deleting a file from Downloads is permanent. See Google’s guidance on opening, saving and deleting Chromebook files and keeping downloaded files from being deleted.
Move files with Google Drive
- On the Chromebook, connect to the internet and open Files.
- Select the local files or folders to transfer and upload or move them into a suitable folder in Google Drive.
- Wait for the upload to complete. Open Drive and check that the expected files and folders appear there.
- On the Windows laptop, sign in to the same Google Account and open Google Drive to access the uploaded files.
Google explains how Chromebook files work with Drive in its files guidance. Cloud access depends on a successful upload, internet access, account access and any applicable organization policy.

Move files with a USB flash drive or external drive
This route gives you a removable copy without first uploading files to cloud storage. Before connecting a drive, check that its connector fits the Chromebook and that the device is compatible. Google’s list of Chromebook-supported filesystems includes FAT, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT and NTFS, among others; a supported filesystem does not guarantee that every device or partition will be recognized.
- Connect the drive to the Chromebook and open Files.
- Select the files or folders you want to transfer and copy them to the external drive.
- When copying is complete, select Eject for the drive in Files before unplugging it.
- Connect the drive to the Windows laptop. Open File Explorer, open the external drive, and copy the files to a destination such as Documents or Pictures.
- Open the destination folder and check that the files you need are there and accessible. Keep the Chromebook originals until that check succeeds.
If the Chromebook asks to format a drive it does not recognize, do not proceed unless the drive’s contents are backed up elsewhere. Google warns that formatting erases the files on the device. Check Google’s file types and external-device guidance for supported storage types and handling.

Move Chrome bookmarks to Windows
Keep using Chrome: sync with your Google Account
- On the Chromebook, open Chrome settings and confirm that you are signed in to the Google Account you intend to use. Check that bookmarks are included in sync.
- On Windows, open Chrome and sign in to that same account.
- Check Chrome for the saved bookmarks.
Google says saved information, including bookmarks, is available on devices signed in to the account. If you sign out, bookmarks may remain only on the device. Sync can be restricted on managed or organization accounts. See Google’s guidance on getting bookmarks and other information across devices.
Switch to Microsoft Edge: export and import an HTML file
- In Chrome on the Chromebook, open Bookmark Manager and choose Export Bookmarks. Chrome saves the bookmarks as an HTML file.
- Transfer that HTML file to Windows using Google Drive or a removable drive.
- In Edge, go to Settings > Profiles > Import browser data.
- Choose the option to import a favorites or bookmarks HTML file, select the file you transferred, and complete the import.
- Check the Favorites bar in Edge. Microsoft says imported favorites appear in a folder there, which may be named Imported.
Microsoft’s Edge favorites instructions describe importing bookmarks from an HTML file.

- 【PC to PC File & Data Transfer】It supports data transfer between two computers, Windows-to-Windows or Windows-to-Mac. Equipped with PL27A1 smart chip, it lets you share one keyboard and mouse for both PCs. You can move the cursor freely across screens, drag & drop files and folders, and copy texts, images and screenshots via shared clipboard with stable connection. It works perfectly with old laptops and desktops without hardware upgrades, breaking the barriers of cross-system file transfer.
- 【USB 3.0 High-Speed Transmission】Adopting USB 3.0 main control chip, it reaches a max transfer speed of 5Gbps. Gold-plated connectors with signal gain ensure smooth bulk file copying without lag or disconnection. HD videos, large media libraries and 100GB+ folders get synced fast, cutting data migration time in half for new PC setup. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 ports at lower speeds. Actual speed depends on PC hardware and operating systems.
- 【Premium Materials】Gold-plated connectors enhance signal stability and anti-oxidation performance for longer service life. The connectors feature aluminum alloy housings for fast heat dissipation and safer operation. The thickened cable with high-density black braided outer layer has a 5mm wire diameter, offering great flexibility and durability.
- 【Instructions for Use】PCLINQ6 software needs to be installed for first-time use. The cable has built-in virtual storage that pops up as a disk drive after plugging in. Drag the installer to desktop to start fully offline transfer with no network or IP setup required. Notes: It’s only for PC-to-PC data transfer, not for charging or video output. Some antivirus software may block the installation of PCLINQ6; if installation fails, add PCLINQ6 to the whitelist in your antivirus program. For Mac users: On macOS 10.15 and above, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security, and grant PCLINQ6 permissions for Accessibility and Screen Recording.
- 【Wide Compatibility】Compatible with Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10/11 and macOS 10.15 and above. It supports secure migration of files, folders and user data as well as shared keyboard and mouse control between two devices. Ideal for PC upgrades, laptop-desktop data exchange, file backup and multi-device data management for teams, enabling quick backup of work and study documents. All files are transferred locally without passing through the internet, eliminating risks of private photos, contracts and work materials being leaked online. One-click full user profile migration is available, and you can pick specific files/settings without altering original data on the old PC.
If bookmarks are missing or a drive is not recognized
- Bookmarks missing in Chrome: Check which Google Account is signed in and whether bookmark sync is enabled. If sync is unavailable, export bookmarks to HTML on the Chromebook and import that file into Chrome or Edge on Windows. Google notes that signed-out Chrome data can remain only on the device.
- Drive not recognized: Check the connector and filesystem compatibility. Do not format the drive if it contains files you need; formatting erases its contents. Use another compatible device or a cloud route instead.
- School or work Chromebook restrictions: Organization policies may restrict storage devices, cloud services, files or account sync. Google advises users of managed Chromebooks to ask their administrator when a file or device does not work.
These steps move ordinary files and Chrome browsing data. They do not establish that Chromebook apps, Android app data, Linux development files or all device settings will transfer to Windows.
