How to Move Direct Deposits and Automatic Payments to a New Bank

Open the new account first, then update each deposit and payment separately. Confirm when the first deposit will arrive, move withdrawals only after funds are available, and keep enough money in the old account for anything still pending. Close it only after you have verified the switch.

This is general U.S. guidance; employers, benefit payors, billers and banks can have different forms, cutoffs and processing times. Confirm effective dates with each organization.

1. Open the new account and make an inventory

Open the account before changing payment instructions. Check its opening requirements and make sure you can access the account details needed to set up deposits and payments. If you are still choosing an account, compare monthly fees and the conditions for avoiding them, minimum-balance requirements, convenience, branch or ATM access where relevant, online and mobile banking, and bill-pay services. Terms and features vary, so confirm current details with the institution. See the CFPB’s checklist for moving a checking account and its checking-account comparison guidance.

List every transaction connected to the old account, including deposits and withdrawals. Check recent statements and account activity, and include:

  • Paychecks and other recurring deposits, such as benefits.
  • Company-authorized automatic debits for utilities, loans, insurance, subscriptions and other bills.
  • Recurring payments scheduled through the old bank’s bill-pay service.
  • Checks that have been written but may not yet have cleared.

The CFPB recommends listing all automatic deposits and withdrawals before making the switch.

2. Update direct deposits with each payor

For payroll, use your employer’s process to submit the new account information. Contact each other deposit source separately, such as a benefit payor, and follow its instructions. Opening a new account does not redirect deposits automatically.

Ask each payor when the first deposit is expected to reach the new account. There is no universal transition date: processing depends on the organization’s forms, cutoffs and schedule.

3. Identify who controls each automatic payment

“Automatic payment” can mean two different things, and the update must go to the party that controls the instruction:

Payment setup Who initiates it Where to change it
Automatic debit The company takes money from your account under your authorization. Update the payment method with the biller or service provider.
Recurring bank bill pay Your bank or credit union sends payment to the company. Update or recreate the recurring instruction in the bank’s bill-pay service.

For each payment, confirm with the relevant company or financial institution that the new instruction is active and the old one is stopped. The CFPB’s explanation of automatic payments describes the distinction between company withdrawals and payments sent through a bank’s bill-pay service.

4. Schedule withdrawals after the first new deposit

Once you know when the first deposit should arrive, arrange payments from the new account for dates after that deposit. Change each biller’s debit instructions and each bank bill-pay schedule as appropriate. Stop the matching old-account payment to reduce the risk of paying twice. Verify the effective date with the organization that handles each payment; a change submitted today may not apply to the next scheduled transaction.

5. Keep the old account funded while activity clears

Do not transfer every dollar or close the old account as soon as you submit the changes. Leave enough to cover checks that have not cleared and payments that have not yet occurred. Monitor balances and scheduled activity in both accounts while the transition is underway; an overlooked debit or check can lead to a returned payment or an overdraft or nonsufficient-funds problem.

6. Stop an old company debit when needed

If a company-initiated debit should no longer occur, contact both the company and your bank or credit union, and follow up in writing. Keep a record of your requests and the dates. Your financial institution may suggest a stop-payment order, which may carry a fee. The CFPB’s stop-payment guidance covers these steps.

Stopping a debit does not cancel a subscription, contract or loan obligation. If you still owe the amount, arrange another way to pay it.

7. Verify the switch, then close the old account

Check both accounts for incoming deposits and scheduled withdrawals. Once deposits are arriving in the new account and payments are leaving it as intended, transfer the remaining funds and ask the old institution to close the account. Request written confirmation of closure.
