On desktop Chrome, open More (⋮) > Settings > Appearance. In the Side panel section, select Left or Right. That is Google’s supported, stable control for changing where the side panel opens, including AI Mode when it appears there.
AI Mode availability and its exact controls are still being rolled out, so labels and options can differ by Chrome version, account, device, language, and country.

The supported way to move AI Mode
Chrome’s general side-panel preference is the reliable way to change the default side for AI Mode on a desktop computer. It is a browser-wide side setting rather than a permanent position switch built only for AI Mode.
- Open Chrome on your computer.
- Select More (⋮) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Open Appearance.
- Find the Side panel section.
- Select Left or Right, depending on where you want panels to open. The wording can vary slightly between Chrome versions.
- Open AI Mode from the address bar, or ask a question about the page you are viewing, to test the new location.
Google Chrome Help describes this path as the way to change the location of the side panel. If the preference is set to Right, AI Mode should open on the right when Chrome uses its side-panel view; set it to Left to place it on the left.

What the side-panel setting changes
The Appearance control sets the default alignment for Chrome’s side-panel framework. It is not documented as an AI Mode-only switch. As a result, changing it can also affect other Chrome panels that use the same framework.

Because the supported preference is broader than AI Mode, choose it when you are comfortable having Chrome’s side panels follow the same side. If you need to leave other panels untouched, look for a separate AI Mode alignment option only if your particular build exposes one.
How to check that AI Mode moved
After changing the setting, test the exact workflow that normally opens AI Mode. The most direct check is to use the AI Mode control in the address bar. You can also ask about the page currently open in Chrome; Google states that a current-page question opens the result in the AI Mode side panel.
- Keep a normal web page open in a tab.
- Use the address-bar AI Mode entry point, or invoke the current-page question feature.
- Watch which edge of the browser window receives the panel.
- If it remains on the old side, close the panel, quit and reopen Chrome, then repeat the test. A restart can make a newly saved interface preference visible, although Google does not require a restart for the setting itself.
The panel’s position is independent of whether AI Mode is shown beside the page or in a full-tab view. AI Mode can provide a side-by-side experience or open in a full tab; the side preference matters only when the side-panel presentation is used.

Why AI Mode may still open on the left
The preference was not changed
Chrome may have more than one settings category that mentions panels. Return to Settings > Appearance and change the specific Side panel location control. Selecting a different AI Mode command without changing this preference will not move the default side.
Your Chrome build uses different labels
Chrome’s interface changes as features roll out. Look for a Left/Right selector under Appearance and Side panel even if the surrounding wording is not identical to Google’s help text. Update Chrome through its normal About Chrome page if your installation is several versions behind, then check Appearance again.
AI Mode is being rolled out gradually
Google says AI Mode availability can differ by account, device, geography, and language, with expansion beyond the United States and English-language settings occurring in stages. A missing button or missing side-panel behavior can therefore reflect availability rather than a broken position setting.
A managed browser is enforcing a policy
On work, school, or otherwise managed installations, an administrator can control Google Search Side Panel with the GoogleSearchSidePanelEnabled policy. Chrome Enterprise documents this policy for Linux, Mac, Windows, and ChromeOS beginning with Chrome 115. If the policy disables the side panel, a user cannot restore AI Mode’s side-panel behavior from ordinary Settings.

Can you move only AI Mode?
Chromium development work contains separate alignment labels for Gemini, Google Search AI Mode, and Chrome Panels. Those labels show that per-panel alignment is being developed, but source-code work is not a promise that every stable Chrome release exposes a user-facing selector.
If your build displays a separate AI Mode alignment control, evaluate it using four questions:
- Scope: Does the control say AI Mode only, or does it refer to the general side panel?
- Stability: Is it present in your normal stable Chrome installation, or only in a preview or experimental build?
- Availability: Does it appear for your account, device, language, and region?
- Administrative control: Is a workplace policy overriding the user preference?
Use the general Appearance setting when you want the supported behavior available to ordinary stable users. Treat a separate AI Mode-only selector as version-dependent until Google documents it for the release you use. Preview builds can change labels, move the control, or remove it, so do not assume that instructions for a Chromium development build apply to every Chrome installation.

How to hide the AI Mode button
If your aim is to remove the entry point rather than move the panel, Google documents a separate visibility action:

- Right-click the address bar.
- Clear Always show AI Mode.
This removes the always-visible address-bar button. It is not documented as a universal way to disable every route by which AI Mode might appear, and it does not change the side-panel position for other Chrome features.

AI Mode supports both a side-by-side experience and a full-tab view. When Chrome opens a result for the current page, Google says that result opens in the AI Mode side panel. If you want more room, use the workflow that opens AI Mode in a full tab when that option is offered in your account and build.
There is no documented universal preference in the supplied Google help material that permanently forces every AI Mode request into a full tab or disables all side-panel behavior. The available presentation can therefore depend on the command you use and on the feature rollout for your account.

Availability by device and software channel
The documented steps apply to Chrome on a computer. Google’s AI Mode help describes the feature as available in Chrome but still rolling out, so a desktop user can have the Appearance setting without having AI Mode itself.
Chrome Enterprise lists the Google Search Side Panel policy for Linux, Mac, Windows, and ChromeOS from Chrome 115. That is a policy support statement, not a guarantee that AI Mode is available on every one of those platforms or in every language.
Chromium code changes that name separate alignment targets are useful evidence of ongoing development, but they should not be treated as stable-product documentation. A control seen in Canary or another preview channel can be absent from the stable channel and can change before release.
Choosing the right fix
- You want AI Mode on the opposite side and do not mind other panels following: Use Settings > Appearance > Side panel and select Left or Right.
- You want only AI Mode moved: Look for an explicitly AI Mode-specific alignment control in your version. If none appears, Chrome’s supported stable setting is the shared side-panel preference.
- You want the button gone: Right-click the address bar and clear Always show AI Mode.
- You want a larger AI Mode workspace: Use the full-tab presentation when your account and Chrome build offer it.
- You cannot change anything on a managed device: Have the administrator check
GoogleSearchSidePanelEnabled.
The key distinction is between location, visibility, and presentation. Appearance changes the side used by Chrome’s panel framework; the address-bar context menu changes whether the AI Mode button is shown; and a full-tab command changes how much space the AI Mode result occupies.
