The transfer moves control of the coins, but it does not erase the old address, hide its balance history, or break the public link between the old inputs and the new output.
For the strongest practical privacy, back up the wallet first, use coin control to select only the reused address’s unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs), avoid combining unexpected dust with ordinary funds, and stop using the old address for new receipts. A whole-wallet sweep is easier, while selective UTXO spending gives you more control over what becomes linked.

What a move to a fresh address actually does
Bitcoin has no account-level transfer button. A wallet transaction spends one or more existing UTXOs and creates one or more new outputs. When you send coins from an old address to a newly generated address that you also control, the blockchain records the old UTXOs as inputs and the fresh address as an output.

That creates a visible relationship: anyone examining the transaction can see which inputs funded the output. A fresh destination prevents that destination from being reused for future payments, but it cannot rewrite earlier blocks or remove the old address’s transaction history. Bitcoin.com Support summarizes the underlying privacy issue this way: “All Bitcoin and cryptocurrency transactions are public, traceable, and permanently recorded in the blockchain data.”

Moving coins is therefore useful for stopping new address reuse, not for making an old address anonymous. If an exchange, merchant, block explorer label, or other observer already associated the old address with you, a self-transfer does not remove that association.
Prepare before you send anything
Confirm that you control the wallet
Open the wallet through its official application or hardware device and confirm that you can spend from the reused address. Do not paste a seed phrase or private key into a website, chat, form, or “address recovery” service. A legitimate wallet will not need your secret recovery words to generate a receiving address or make a transaction.
Make and check a current backup
Ensure the seed backup is complete, readable, and stored offline before moving funds. If the wallet uses a passphrase, additional account, or hardware-device backup, verify those recovery details as well. A fresh address is only useful if you can recover the wallet that controls it.

Update the wallet and check the network
Use the wallet’s current supported release and confirm that you are operating on Bitcoin mainnet rather than a test network or an unrelated asset network. Wallet interfaces can show similar-looking addresses for different networks. Sending on the wrong network can make recovery difficult or impossible.
Step-by-step: move BTC to a fresh address
1. Generate a new receiving address
- Open the wallet’s Receive screen.
- Choose the control for creating another address. In Bitcoin.com’s documented flow, this is Get fresh address.
- If the wallet has an address-reuse setting, turn Re-use deposit address off so the wallet generates a new destination for later receipts.
Previously generated addresses do not disappear. Bitcoin.com Support says that all old addresses remain securely saved in its wallet application. They can continue to receive payments, but they should not be used for unrelated new payments when privacy matters.
2. Verify the destination independently
Compare the address shown on the wallet’s trusted screen with the address you intend to use. With a hardware wallet, confirm the full or visually distinctive portion on the device itself, not only in the computer window. If you copy and paste, check the first and last characters and, where possible, scan a QR code from a trusted display. Malware can replace clipboard contents.
Check that the address belongs to Bitcoin mainnet and that the wallet recognizes its format. Never approve a transaction solely because an address looks plausible; an attacker’s address can have the same length and a similar prefix.

3. Decide which UTXOs to spend
If the wallet offers coin control, open the UTXO or inputs view and select the outputs belonging to the reused address that you want to migrate. This can prevent unrelated addresses from being combined in the same transaction.
If coin control is unavailable, the wallet may automatically combine inputs from several addresses to reach the amount. That common-input combination creates a public link among those addresses. Read the wallet’s transaction preview so you know whether more inputs are being spent than intended.
4. Enter the fresh address and amount
Paste or scan the verified fresh address, select the amount, and inspect the transaction summary. Confirm the fee rate, total fee, selected inputs, destination output, and any change output. The change may be sent to another wallet-generated address; that is normal, but it is still part of the transaction graph.
Input count affects transaction size. Selecting many small UTXOs generally requires more block space and therefore a higher fee than selecting one larger UTXO at the same fee rate.
5. Choose whether to use a test transfer
A small test transaction can reduce the risk of an operational mistake when moving a large balance or using an unfamiliar wallet. It also creates another on-chain transaction and another fee, and it does not undo any links already created. For a well-verified wallet and address, sending the intended amount in one transaction may be simpler and cheaper.
6. Review and broadcast
Approve the transaction only after checking the destination on the trusted wallet screen. Record the transaction ID if the wallet provides one. A status such as broadcast means the transaction has been sent to the network; it does not mean that a block has confirmed it.
7. Wait for confirmation
Watch the transaction in the wallet and, if necessary, a reputable block explorer. Treat the payment as settled only when it has the number of confirmations required by your own risk policy or by the service receiving the funds. Fee markets and network conditions determine how quickly a transaction confirms.

8. Retire the old address for new receipts
After the transfer confirms, generate a new address for each unrelated incoming payment whenever your wallet supports it. Keep the old address in the wallet for historical access, but do not publish it as your current payment address or reuse it merely for convenience.

Choose the right migration method
There is no single best method for every wallet. The practical choice depends on how much control you need over input selection and how much operational complexity you can manage.

A separate wallet can help you keep savings, spending, or business activity organized, but it is not a magic privacy boundary. Anyone analyzing the transaction can still see that the old inputs funded an output controlled by the destination address. Off-chain records, exchange withdrawals, and address labels can add further associations.
How UTXOs and change reveal relationships
A Bitcoin address does not hold a mutable balance. It receives outputs, and each output remains unspent until a transaction consumes it. The wallet may spend one output or several inputs and then create a payment output plus a change output returned to you.
When multiple inputs appear in one transaction, outside observers commonly treat them as being controlled by one entity. That inference is not a mathematical proof of ownership, but it is a powerful heuristic. If your goal is to stop linking unrelated activity, avoid selecting inputs from unrelated addresses in the same transaction.
The destination output is also not automatically private merely because it is new. The spending transaction links it to the old inputs, and future spending can create additional links. A fresh address limits reuse going forward; it does not sever the history visible before the move.
Dust attacks: do not consolidate unexpected tiny outputs
A dust attack sends very small outputs to addresses in an attempt to make the recipient spend them later. BIP451 describes dust attacks as forced address-reuse attacks because spending the dust together with ordinary funds can create common-input links between addresses.

If you notice an unexpected tiny UTXO:
- Label it as unknown or suspicious in the wallet.
- Freeze or lock it if the wallet provides that control.
- Do not include it in a routine sweep with your normal balance.
- Read the wallet’s documented dust-handling guidance before spending or consolidating it.
Do not assume that every small output is harmless change. The amount may be intentionally uneconomical to spend, and combining it with larger UTXOs can reveal relationships you were trying to avoid.

Deterministic wallets derive many addresses from one seed. BIP44 separates receiving addresses onto an external chain and change addresses onto an internal chain. It also specifies an address-discovery gap limit of 20 unused external addresses.
The gap limit matters during recovery. If you generate a long sequence of addresses and never use them, a restoring wallet may stop scanning before it reaches later addresses. Do not create many unused addresses and assume every wallet will find them automatically after a restore. Follow the wallet’s documented backup and recovery process, and test recovery with a small amount before relying on it for a large balance.
Address history is normally retained inside the wallet even after you generate newer destinations. Losing the seed, account selection, passphrase, or derivation-path information can make an otherwise valid fresh address inaccessible, so record recovery details securely before migrating funds.
Fees, amounts, and confirmation decisions
Fees rise with input complexity
Bitcoin fees are based largely on transaction size and the fee rate you choose. A transfer with many selected inputs occupies more block space than one with a single input. Coin control can improve privacy while increasing the fee if it requires spending numerous small outputs.
Leave enough for the fee
The amount received by the fresh address is the selected input value minus the network fee and any change returned by the wallet. Review the final receive amount rather than assuming the entire visible balance can be sent. Some wallets offer a send maximum option that calculates the fee automatically; still verify the destination and resulting amount on the confirmation screen.

A transaction can be visible in the wallet or a mempool while still waiting for inclusion in a block. If the fee is too low for current conditions, confirmation may take longer. Avoid creating a replacement or spending the same UTXOs again unless you understand the wallet’s fee-bumping procedure and the consequences for the original transaction.
Troubleshooting common problems
The new address is not shown after restoring the wallet
Confirm that you restored the correct seed, passphrase, account, network, and derivation path. Check whether the wallet has scanned far enough to cover the used addresses. Because BIP44’s external-chain gap limit is 20 unused addresses, a long run of unused generated addresses can prevent automatic discovery. Use the wallet’s official rescan or account-recovery procedure rather than importing a seed into an unknown website.
The wallet combines more inputs than expected
Open the transaction’s input details. If unrelated UTXOs are included, cancel the draft and use coin control, a separate account, or a smaller amount that can be funded by the intended inputs. If the wallet has no such feature, recognize that the transfer will create a broader public link and decide whether the convenience is worth it.
The transaction is unconfirmed
Check that it was broadcast to the Bitcoin network and that the transaction ID is consistent across your wallet and a reputable explorer. Review the fee rate and current network conditions. Use only the wallet’s supported fee-bump or replacement feature; do not paste the seed phrase into a service promising instant confirmation.
The destination address was wrong
If the transaction has not been broadcast, cancel it and create a new draft with a newly verified address. If it has been confirmed, Bitcoin transactions generally cannot be reversed by the sender. Contact the owner of the destination only if you can identify them through a trusted, independent channel; no blockchain authority can retrieve coins from an address controlled by someone else.
An unexpected dust output appeared
Freeze or label it, avoid spending it with normal funds, and consult the wallet’s dust guidance. Treating every output as spendable can defeat the privacy purpose of the migration.
Practices that prevent future address reuse
- Use the wallet’s Receive function to generate a new address for each unrelated payment.
- Keep a verified offline seed backup and protect any passphrase separately.
- Verify addresses on a trusted wallet or hardware screen before approving a transaction.
- Check the Bitcoin network and address format before sending.
- Use coin control when you need to avoid combining unrelated UTXOs.
- Label your own UTXOs so you can distinguish expected change from unexpected dust.
- Do not publish old addresses as current donation, invoice, or payment addresses.
- Remember that a fresh address prevents new reuse but cannot erase public history already recorded.
What the move can and cannot accomplish
The successful transfer gives you a new address for receiving future Bitcoin and can reduce unnecessary reuse. It does not anonymize the old address, conceal the self-transfer, remove explorer labels, or guarantee that observers cannot connect your future activity. Privacy depends on the entire transaction pattern: input selection, change handling, address publication, custodial records, and how you later spend the coins.
Bitcoin.com Support puts the practical benefit plainly: “Using a fresh address each time you receive Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies will help to preserve your financial privacy.” Treat that as a forward-looking practice, not as a promise that a migration can erase the past.
