The safest way to move data from an iPhone to an Android foldable is to use the foldable’s built-in transfer tool. On a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, open Smart Switch and choose Receive on this phone, then select iPhone/iPad. A cable usually transfers the broadest range of supported content; wireless Smart Switch and an iCloud import are alternatives. You will normally reinstall Android versions of apps and sign in again because iOS apps are not portable Android binaries.
For the reverse move, use Google’s Move to iOS app while setting up the new iPhone. In both directions, keep the old phone charged and available, verify photos, files, messages, contacts and account access, and only then erase or trade it in.

Before you start
Transfer support depends on the exact foldable, iPhone model, operating-system versions and connection method. Samsung’s Smart Switch categories can vary by device OS, OS version and whether you use a cable, wireless connection or iCloud. Other Android foldables may provide a different migration utility, so identify the destination manufacturer and model before following the Galaxy-specific labels below.
Prepare both phones
- Charge both devices and keep them close together for the entire transfer.
- Unlock the iPhone and make sure you know the Apple Account password, verification method and any passcode required for trust prompts.
- Back up the iPhone before starting. Keep account-recovery details, app passwords and two-factor authentication methods available.
- Check free storage on the foldable. If it cannot hold the entire photo and video library, plan to copy those items separately or deselect the largest categories.
- Check whether photos are stored locally on the iPhone or optimized in iCloud. Cloud-only originals may require an iCloud or Google Photos step rather than a direct device copy.
- Have the correct cable and, for some Lightning iPhones, a USB-C-to-Lightning cable or adapter.
Decide what must move
Make a short priority list before opening the transfer tool: contacts, calendars, message history, camera photos and videos, documents, notes, passwords, authenticator access and the apps you use every day. This prevents a full transfer from failing because a small foldable has insufficient space and makes it easier to verify the result.

Choose a transfer method
| Method | Best use | What it depends on | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cable | Samsung says this supports the most types of data. | Correct ports, a compatible cable and any required adapter. | Connector types differ between iPhone models. |
| Wireless Smart Switch | Avoids finding a cable and is available in the setup flow on supported Galaxy devices. | Compatible models, network discovery and a stable connection. | Availability varies by model, OS version and region. |
| iCloud import | Useful when important content is already synchronized to iCloud. | Apple Account credentials, verification approval and cloud-resident content. | Items still in iCloud, interrupted transfers and unsupported formats need separate checking. |
For a Galaxy Z Fold, start with a cable when the widest content coverage matters. Use wireless when both phones can maintain the required connection, or use iCloud when local cable access is impractical and your content is already synchronized.
Move data from an iPhone to a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold
Wired Smart Switch transfer
- On the Galaxy, open Smart Switch.
- Choose Receive on this phone.
- Select iPhone/iPad, then choose Cable.
- Connect the iPhone and Galaxy with a compatible cable. A Lightning iPhone may need a USB-C-to-Lightning cable or adapter.
- Unlock the iPhone and accept its trust or access prompt. If the prompt does not appear, disconnect, unlock the iPhone again and reconnect.
- Review the categories Smart Switch offers. Select only what the foldable can store and what you actually need.
- Start the transfer and follow any in-app instructions for app-specific data, including prompts shown by messaging apps.
- Wait for the copy and the post-transfer organization to finish. Do not disconnect either phone merely because the progress bar reaches its final stage.
- Open representative items on the Galaxy before touching the old iPhone: a recent and an older photo, a video, a document, several contacts, message threads and your most important apps.
Smart Switch can move supported contacts, photos, videos, messages, apps, settings and other content, but Samsung does not promise identical categories for every device and connection. A successful transfer screen therefore is not proof that every app’s private data or every iCloud item arrived.
Wireless Smart Switch
Open Smart Switch on the Galaxy, choose Receive on this phone, select iPhone/iPad and follow the wireless connection prompts shown on screen. Keep both phones nearby, unlocked when prompted and connected to power if the transfer is large. Wireless pairing can fail when the network blocks device discovery; if the phones cannot find each other, use a cable instead.
Samsung describes an updated QR-code connection experience for its eighth-generation Galaxy Z devices. That is not a universal feature of every Android foldable, and the displayed setup path is the authority for your model.

Import from iCloud
- Open Smart Switch on the Galaxy and choose the receive option for an iPhone.
- Select the iCloud route when it is offered.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used for the content you want to retrieve.
- Approve the verification request on the iPhone or complete the displayed verification step.
- Select the compatible categories available in iCloud and begin the import.
- After it finishes, check the resulting content in the relevant Galaxy apps and confirm that cloud-only photos and files are actually available offline when you need them.
This route depends on account access and synchronization. It cannot retrieve content that never reached iCloud, and an item can be absent because of its format or an interrupted download.
Galaxy Z Fold8 and eighth-generation regional limits
Samsung’s August 25, 2026 guidance says its upgraded iOS-to-Galaxy method for the Galaxy Z Fold8 and eighth-generation Z series applies to devices running Android 17 or later and iPhones running iOS 26.6 or later, in regions outside mainland China. Treat those requirements as specific to that feature, not as a blanket requirement for every Smart Switch transfer or every foldable. Check the current on-device setup and local support before relying on the QR-based path.
What happens to apps
iOS apps are not copied as Android installations
An iPhone app package cannot simply be placed on Android. Smart Switch may identify supported apps or transfer app-related information, but you should expect to download the Android version from the Play Store and sign in again. If an app has no Android edition, you need its web service, an alternative Android app or a manual export if the developer provides one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteApp data is controlled by each app
Whether a login, conversation database, game save or offline download migrates depends on the app and the transfer route. Follow the app’s own migration instructions when Smart Switch displays a prompt. Some services require an in-app backup, a transfer code, a phone-number confirmation or a fresh login. Do not assume that an app appearing on the new phone means its private data was restored.

Google’s general Android setup documentation says that even Android-to-Android transfers may omit downloads such as PDFs, hidden-folder media, apps installed outside Google Play, data from apps that do not use Android backup and some non-Google account settings. That guidance is not an iPhone-to-Galaxy inventory; use the Samsung iPhone flow for the categories it actually offers and inspect each important app afterward.
Photos, videos and ordinary files
Check iCloud optimization first
If the iPhone uses optimized photo storage, the full-resolution originals may be in iCloud rather than on the handset. A direct cable copy may therefore have less available to read locally. Samsung recommends moving iCloud media to Google Photos when that better matches your storage plan and saves time or device space. Whichever route you choose, compare the newest and oldest items and open several full-resolution files.
Copy files that the transfer misses
Documents, downloads, PDFs, recordings and files in app-specific folders may need a separate route through a computer, cloud storage or a file-transfer method supported by both devices. After copying, check the destination folder, filename, date and file type. A file can exist on the new phone but still fail to open if the receiving app does not support its format.

Move data from an Android phone to an iPhone
The reverse direction uses Apple’s setup flow and Google’s Move to iOS app rather than Smart Switch.
- On the Android phone, install the Move to iOS app listed by Google.
- Charge both phones and keep them together. Google says a USB-C cable is more reliable than Wi-Fi when the devices support a direct connection.
- Start setting up the new iPhone. When the transfer screen appears, choose From Android.
- Open Move to iOS on the Android phone and follow its prompts to connect to the iPhone.
- Enter the code shown on the iPhone when requested, select the data categories offered and leave both phones alone until the progress indicator finishes.
- Complete iPhone setup, then download your apps from the App Store and sign in. Free apps may be matched when both stores carry them and the app supports the transfer, but matching is not guaranteed.
Music, books and PDFs may require manual movement. If the iPhone has already completed setup, Apple’s documented route is to erase it and restart setup for the transfer, or move the content manually without erasing. Erasing is destructive, so make a backup and confirm that anything created on the iPhone is stored elsewhere first.

Wireless phones cannot find each other
For the QR-based iPhone-to-Android path, Google says the Wi-Fi network must allow device discovery. Move closer to the router, disable network isolation or guest-mode restrictions when you control the network, and retry the displayed setup flow. If pairing still fails, switch to a compatible cable.

The transfer stops or stays stuck
Keep both devices powered and unlocked when requested. Disconnect and reconnect the cable, accept the iPhone trust prompt, check for a damaged or charge-only cable and restart the transfer. Large libraries can take a long time; avoid switching apps or letting either phone shut down. If repeated attempts fail, transfer smaller categories separately.

The foldable reports insufficient storage
Cancel the transfer, deselect large videos and photo groups, and copy those separately. Check the foldable’s free space again after the first pass because transferred media and app downloads can consume more room than expected.
Photos or files are missing
Look in iCloud and confirm that the item was fully synchronized. Check whether its format is supported and whether the transfer ended prematurely. Retry the missing category, then inspect the destination folder and open the file instead of relying only on a transferred-item count.
Texts do not arrive on Android
Turn off iMessage on every iOS device associated with the phone number. Confirm that the SIM or eSIM is active in the Android phone. Ask contacts who normally message your Apple Account to send to your phone number, and test from more than one conversation.

Verify everything before erasing the old phone
Use the new device for a realistic check rather than deleting the old one immediately.
- Open recent, old and favorite photos; play several videos; inspect dates and albums.
- Open representative documents, PDFs and recordings from their expected folders.
- Search contacts, place a test call and send and receive a text message.
- Open important message threads and verify that the correct phone number is active.
- Launch banking, work, password-manager, authenticator and cloud-storage apps. Confirm account access and recovery methods.
- Check calendars, notes and any app-specific archives you rely on.
- Confirm that backups are enabled on the new phone and that the account recovery information is current.
Keep the original phone until these checks pass and you are confident that any missing content can be recovered. Only then sign out, remove cellular service where appropriate, erase the device and prepare it for trade-in or resale.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- iPhone to Galaxy Z Fold, maximum coverage: use Smart Switch by cable, then reinstall Android apps and verify app-specific data.
- iPhone to Galaxy, no suitable cable: try wireless Smart Switch, provided the devices and network support discovery.
- Most content already synchronized: use Smart Switch’s iCloud import, then check cloud-only media and file formats.
- Android to iPhone: use Move to iOS during iPhone setup; choose a cable when possible.
- Setup already finished on iPhone: either erase and restart after making a backup, or move content manually.
- Any direction: verify the new phone before deleting the old one.
