Use a copy of your vault, clean Obsidian-only syntax, and test one representative note before moving everything. For a native, collaborative Google Doc, copy the prepared Markdown and use Paste from Markdown. If you need to keep an editable Markdown file, upload the .md file to Drive and open it in Google Docs without converting it. These routes preserve common Markdown such as headings, emphasis, strikethrough, lists, tables, code and ordinary links, but no workflow guarantees a lossless conversion of every Obsidian feature.
Obsidian notes are Markdown-formatted plain-text files inside a local vault folder. A vault is therefore a collection of files and attachments, not one guaranteed single-document export. Preserve the original folder, process a curated set of notes, and manually check wikilinks, block references, callouts, embeds, frontmatter, local images and plugin syntax.

What actually moves from Obsidian to Google Docs
Obsidian stores each note as a Markdown-formatted plain-text file. The vault is a local folder that can contain subfolders, images, audio, PDFs and other attachments. Moving a vault means deciding which files and assets belong in the destination and how links between them should work; it is not the same as exporting one database into one document.
There are two different Google Docs outcomes:
- Native Google Docs document: Markdown is parsed into Google Docs content. You can use Docs collaboration, comments and its normal formatting controls, but the result is no longer a Markdown file.
- Markdown file kept in Drive: You upload the
.mdfile and open it with Google Docs in Markdown mode. Google states that the file remains an.mdfile in Drive; it is not converted into a native Google Docs document.
That distinction determines the best transfer method. A native document is usually the right deliverable for sharing and editing with people who work in Google Docs. Markdown mode is the safer choice when preserving the source file and its text syntax matters more than Docs-specific collaboration features.

Choose the transfer route before editing anything
| Route | Result | Common Markdown fidelity | Obsidian-only syntax | Attachments | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paste from Markdown | Native Google Docs document | Documented support for headings # through ######, italics, bold, combined italic-and-bold, strikethrough and standard Markdown links; lists, tables, code and other common constructs should be checked in your sample |
Wikilinks, block references, callouts, embeds and plugin syntax need conversion or manual cleanup | Local paths are not guaranteed to resolve; insert images or use stable web links when necessary | Keep the original Markdown and vault as the reversible source |
Upload .md to Drive |
Markdown file remains an .md file in Markdown mode |
Source syntax is retained rather than rendered as a normal Docs document | Obsidian syntax remains in the file unless you edit it | Assets remain separate files and paths must still be valid | Highest file-level reversibility; original text is still available |
| DOCX intermediary | DOCX that can then be opened or imported in Google Docs | A community Obsidian DOCX Importer describes preservation of headings, emphasis, highlights, links, lists, tables, blockquotes, code blocks and images | Behavior depends on the plugin and its current maintenance; verify before relying on it | Potentially embedded during export, but inspect every image and link | Retain the vault and Markdown because an extra conversion step can introduce new differences |
Use the first route when the final deliverable must behave like a Google Doc. Use the second when the Markdown file itself must remain authoritative. Consider the DOCX route only when its intermediate layout solves a specific problem that direct Markdown handling does not.
Prepare a reversible copy of the vault
Do not make your first conversion against the only copy of your notes. A reversible workflow lets you compare the result, undo link rewrites and recover assets that a document cannot represent.
- Duplicate the vault folder. Copy the entire folder to a separate location, or create an archive. Keep the original
.mdfiles and attachments untouched. - Choose a transfer set. Select a project folder, a group of related notes or a curated publication set. Avoid assuming that every note in a large vault belongs in one Google Doc.
- Record the folder structure. Note where images and other attachments live relative to the notes that reference them. Relative paths are useful during preparation, even though Google Docs may not be able to resolve local paths later.
- Pick a representative test note. Include at least one heading hierarchy, bold and italic text, a list, a table, a code block, a standard link, an image and any callout or embed you regularly use.
- Keep the original as the source of truth. Perform cleanup in the duplicate or in a temporary working copy. Do not delete the Markdown files after a successful-looking import.
Make Obsidian Markdown portable
Google Docs’ Markdown parser expects ordinary Markdown. Obsidian adds useful syntax that is meaningful inside a vault but may not have an equivalent in Docs. Convert those constructs before pasting when the destination needs readable, portable content.
| Obsidian construct | What to do for a native Google Doc | What to check in Markdown mode |
|---|---|---|
[[Note]] |
Replace it with a standard link such as [Note](Note.md) when a file link is appropriate, or with plain text if the target will not be moved |
The wikilink remains Obsidian-specific unless you convert it |
[[Note#Heading]] |
Use a standard Markdown link with a valid destination and anchor, or write the destination as text if the anchor cannot be preserved | Check whether the target and heading still exist in the new folder structure |
| Block references | Rewrite as a quotation, paragraph or ordinary link to the source note; there is no assumption that Google Docs will resolve the reference | References remain text unless you deliberately edit them |
| Callouts | Convert each callout to a heading, blockquote or labeled paragraph so its meaning survives even if its visual styling does not | Keep the original syntax only if the Markdown file will continue to be used in Obsidian |
| Embeds | Replace with the actual text, an inserted image or a stable link. Verify that the destination can access the embedded item | Local embeds may remain unresolved outside the vault |
| YAML/frontmatter | Decide whether metadata should appear as a labeled table, introductory paragraph or separate record; do not assume it will become Docs properties | Frontmatter remains part of the Markdown text unless you remove or transform it |
| HTML snippets | Convert important content to Markdown or ordinary text. Google documents that HTML in Markdown files becomes plain text | Expect the literal HTML to remain visible rather than render as a component |
| Plugin-specific syntax | Replace it with a portable equivalent or omit it with a deliberate note | Preserve it only if the receiving editor supports the same plugin syntax |
Use conventional heading syntax
Put a space after each hash marker: # Title, ## Section and so on. Google documents six heading levels, from # through ######. A missing space, unusual heading extension or plugin-generated heading can be treated as ordinary text, so inspect the rendered result.
Prefer ordinary links for portability
A link such as [Project brief](Project%20brief.md) is closer to what a general Markdown parser expects than [[Project brief]]. If the target note will not accompany the document, use descriptive text or a stable web address instead of leaving a link that points to a nonexistent local file.

Decide what frontmatter means to readers
Frontmatter often contains dates, tags, aliases or workflow flags for Obsidian. A collaborative document reader may need that information presented as visible metadata, while a final report may not need it at all. Make the choice in the working copy so the original metadata remains recoverable.
Handle images and other attachments separately
Obsidian attachments are separate files. They may include images, audio, PDFs or other accepted file types, and a note can point to them through a relative path. Copy the relevant assets alongside the selected notes and preserve those relative paths for as long as possible.
Recommended Free Tools
- Inventory every referenced asset. For each note, identify images, audio, PDFs and files embedded or linked from the text.
- Copy the asset folder. Keep the same relative location in the working copy where practical. Avoid renaming files until you have checked every reference.
- Test image rendering in the sample. A local path that works in Obsidian may not be accessible to a cloud document after the Markdown is pasted.
- Insert or relink failures. In a native Google Doc, insert the image directly or replace the broken local path with a stable web link that the intended readers can open.
- Verify access permissions. A document can display an image to its owner while other collaborators lack permission to the underlying file. Check from an account with the same access level as the audience.
Do not infer that a successfully rendered image means every attachment transferred. Audio, PDFs and other files may need to remain as Drive files with explicit links rather than becoming content inside the document.
Route A: create a native Google Doc with Paste from Markdown
This route renders the prepared Markdown as Google Docs content. It is the direct choice when collaborators need a normal Google Doc rather than an .md file.
- Prepare the text. Open the working copy of the selected note, convert Obsidian-only syntax, and confirm that headings use a hash followed by a space.
- Copy the Markdown content to your clipboard. Copy the complete note, including the portions you want rendered. If the note contains unsupported frontmatter or plugin blocks, decide how to rewrite them before copying.
- Open a new Google Doc. Use a blank document for the first test so unexpected formatting is easy to identify.
- Paste as Markdown. Right-click in the document and select Paste from Markdown. This is the documented Google Docs command for converting clipboard Markdown into Google Docs content.
- Inspect the document structure. Open the document outline or click through headings to confirm that levels, order and text are correct. Check bold, italics, combined emphasis, strikethrough, lists, tables, code and links against the source note.
- Repair unsupported elements. Replace literal wikilinks, unresolved embeds, plain-text HTML, missing images or incorrectly rendered callouts with portable text or Docs formatting.
- Rename and share only after review. Give the document a useful title, set sharing permissions, and keep the original Markdown beside your project records.
What the native conversion is designed to preserve
Google’s documented Markdown support includes six heading levels, italics, bold, italic-plus-bold, strikethrough and standard Markdown links. In a representative note, also test lists, tables, code blocks and blockquotes because the appearance of these structures matters to the reader and can vary with syntax details. Treat the test as the acceptance check for your own notes rather than promising that every construct in an entire vault will render identically.

Why pasted content can look different
A Google Doc applies its own paragraph styles, fonts, spacing and page behavior after parsing. Markdown has no universal equivalent for every Docs styling feature. The conversion therefore produces editable Docs content, not a pixel-for-pixel copy of an Obsidian theme. Reapply any needed font colors, highlights or alignment manually; those styles are not retained when working with Markdown files according to Google’s documentation.
Route B: upload the Markdown file and keep it as Markdown
Choose this route when preserving the editable .md file is more important than creating a native Google Doc.
- Open Google Drive. Upload the prepared
.mdfile from the working copy. - Open the uploaded file with Google Docs. Use the option that opens the Markdown file in Docs’ Markdown mode.
- Confirm the file type. Google states that the file does not convert to a Google Docs file; it remains an
.mdfile kept in Drive. - Review the source text. Confirm that the Markdown characters, links, frontmatter and any retained Obsidian syntax are still present as intended.
- Share the file with the right permissions. Readers need access to the Markdown file and to any separately shared attachments or linked notes.
This mode is not a workaround for rendering every Obsidian feature. It preserves the Markdown file, but it does not make wikilinks, block references, callouts or local embeds universally meaningful to people who do not use the same vault. If the audience needs a polished reading document, use the native-doc route or provide a separately cleaned copy.
Route C: use a DOCX intermediary only when it solves a real problem
A community-listed Obsidian DOCX Importer describes Markdown-to-DOCX export with preservation of headings, emphasis, highlights, links, lists, tables, blockquotes, code blocks and images. You can then open the DOCX in Google Docs. This can be useful when a DOCX handoff is already part of your team’s process or when you need a layout feature that direct Markdown paste does not provide.
It adds another conversion boundary, however. The importer is not an official Obsidian or Google product, and its maintenance and current behavior require verification. Test it against the same representative note, inspect images and links, and keep the original Markdown. Do not treat a successful DOCX export as proof that a whole vault converted losslessly.

| Local attachment paths | May not resolve in Drive or a native Doc | Insert files directly or use stable, permissioned links |
Move more than one note without creating a maze
For a multi-note project, process by folder, project or curated note set. A large vault rarely benefits from being pasted into one enormous document: navigation becomes difficult, links become ambiguous and unrelated private notes can be exposed accidentally.
Create an index document
Make a short contents document with the project name, a one-line description for each note and links to the corresponding Google Doc or Markdown file. Use ordinary links rather than Obsidian wikilinks. This gives readers a navigable entry point while allowing each note to retain its own comments, permissions and revision history.
Preserve stable names
Keep note titles and filenames consistent during the first transfer. Renaming a file while also changing links, folders and attachment paths makes it harder to identify which failure came from the conversion. Rename after the sample and first batch have passed review, then update every affected link deliberately.
Separate public and private material
Obsidian vaults often contain drafts, personal notes and supporting files that do not belong in a shared document. Curate the transfer set before uploading anything, and inspect links for accidental references to excluded notes or local paths.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTroubleshooting common failures
“Paste from Markdown” is missing
Make sure you are right-clicking inside a Google Doc after copying Markdown text to the clipboard. If the option still does not appear, use the Markdown-file route for preservation, or paste the text normally and apply Docs styles manually as a fallback. The fallback is not the same conversion path and should be checked line by line.
Best Value
Headings appear as plain text
Check that every heading marker is followed by a space and that the marker is at the start of the line. A heading generated by a plugin or embedded inside another construct may not be recognized. Correct it in the working Markdown and repeat the sample transfer.
Wikilinks show brackets
That is expected when Obsidian syntax is treated as ordinary text. Replace [[Note]] with a standard Markdown link or descriptive text before using Paste from Markdown. If you retain the syntax in Markdown mode, tell readers that it is intended for an Obsidian vault.
Images are missing
Confirm that the asset was copied, that its relative path is correct and that the destination can access it. A local path cannot point into your computer’s vault after the document is shared. Insert the image into the native Doc or provide a stable, permissioned link.
Callouts, colors or alignment disappeared
These are styling and syntax features that do not have a guaranteed portable equivalent. Rebuild the visual treatment with Google Docs headings, blockquotes, borders, highlights or alignment controls after the content conversion, and retain the original note if the exact Obsidian presentation matters.
Links point to the wrong place
Open links from the resulting document instead of trusting their displayed labels. Relative links may break when notes are separated from the vault, and a heading anchor can change when a title is edited. Replace fragile local destinations with links to the final Google Docs files or with stable web URLs.
The document is too large or confusing
Split the transfer by folder or project. Use an index document to connect the smaller files. This also makes permissions, comments and revision history easier to manage.
A practical verification checklist
Before sharing the finished material, compare the native document or Markdown file with the source note using this checklist:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The original vault and attachments remain untouched.
- Every intended note is present, and excluded private notes are absent.
- Heading levels and order match the source.
- Bold, italic, combined emphasis and strikethrough appear where intended.
- Lists retain their nesting and numbering.
- Tables have the expected rows, columns and cell text.
- Code blocks remain readable and are not mixed into normal paragraphs.
- Standard links open the intended destination.
- Wikilinks, block references, callouts and embeds have a deliberate replacement or are clearly labeled as Obsidian-specific.
- Frontmatter and plugin syntax have an intentional reader-facing treatment.
- Images display for a collaborator with the intended permissions.
- HTML snippets, smart chips, colors, highlights and alignment have been checked for the documented conversion behavior.
- An index or contents document exists when several notes are being delivered.
- The final sharing permissions do not expose unrelated files or the private source vault.
Recommended decision
For most people who ask for “Google Docs without losing Markdown formatting,” the best workflow is: duplicate the vault, select a manageable note set, convert Obsidian-only syntax to ordinary Markdown, test a representative note, and use Paste from Markdown for the final native Google Doc. Use Drive’s Markdown mode instead when the .md file must remain the authoritative, editable artifact. Whichever route you choose, keep the original vault and audit attachments and Obsidian-specific features rather than assuming that a successful paste represents a lossless vault conversion.
