How to Move Affinity Studio Projects Between Mac and iPad Without Losing Fonts or Linked Assets (2026 Guide)

Use a version-compatible Affinity file, transfer the native project together with every linked resource, install the same fonts on the iPad, and validate the document before editing. The most important limitation comes first: as of 16 October 2026, the current Affinity desktop app is available for macOS, while the official download page lists the new iPad version as “coming soon.” The newer desktop app can open files made in Affinity V1 or V2, but V1/V2 applications—including V2 on iPad—cannot open a file saved by the newer app. If the iPad still runs V2, keep a V2 copy and do not overwrite it with a file saved in the new desktop application.

For compatible versions, save the native project (.afdesign, .afphoto, or .afpub) to a local or cloud location that appears in the iPadOS Files app. Copy linked images and text files with it, or embed assets where practical. Install the original fonts on the iPad, then use Font Manager and a visual inspection to catch missing fonts, reflowed text, or changed image crops before saving.

Check the Affinity version before you move anything

A file-transfer problem can actually be a file-format problem. The new desktop application, identified by Affinity as Affinity by Canva, opens documents created in V1 and V2. The compatibility is not symmetrical: older applications, including V2 on iPad, cannot open documents created or saved in the newer application. The official FAQ also says there is no announced release date for the new Affinity on iPad and recommends running V2 independently while using the new desktop app.

Source device and app Destination device and app What to expect
New Affinity desktop on macOS New Affinity iPad version iPad version is listed as coming soon; compatibility and release timing are not established.
New Affinity desktop on macOS Affinity V2 on iPad Do not open a file saved by the new app in V2; older versions cannot read it. Preserve a V2 copy instead.
Affinity V2 on Mac Affinity V2 on iPad Use the same V2-era native file and complete the asset and font checks below.
Affinity V1 on Mac Affinity V1 or V2 on iPad The newer desktop application can read V1/V2 files, but your destination still needs an application that supports the file you send.

Before exporting or syncing, write down the exact Affinity generation on both devices. If you cannot confirm that the destination can open the saved file, duplicate the project and keep the original untouched. A reversible copy is safer than testing compatibility on the only working document.

Prepare a portable project folder on the Mac

An Affinity document is not necessarily self-contained. Placed images can be embedded in the document or linked as external files. Affinity also supports importing text files as linked resources. A linked resource remains outside the native file so it can be edited independently; moving only the .afdesign, .afphoto, or .afpub file can therefore leave the destination unable to find part of the layout.

Choose embedded or linked assets deliberately

  • Embed when portability is the priority. Embedding places the asset inside the document, removing a separate path that must be maintained. Use this for images that do not need independent updating and for a handoff where one file must open anywhere.
  • Keep links when the project depends on external updating. Linked images and linked text are useful when several documents share the same source or when another application updates the source file. In that case, the source files must travel with the project.
  • Do not mix an undocumented folder structure with links. A link that works on the Mac because it points to a deep folder, mounted volume, or a temporary download may fail on iPadOS. Put the native file and its linked resources in a clearly named project folder and preserve the relative arrangement.

Build the folder

  1. Create a project folder with a stable name, such as Client_Brochure_2026. Keep the native Affinity file at the top level.
  2. Add subfolders such as Images and Linked_Text only if your existing links can be preserved with that arrangement. Do not rename or move a linked file after packaging unless you are prepared to relink it.
  3. Copy every linked image and linked text file into the package. Include alternate image versions if the document can switch between them.
  4. Save a second copy of the native file before changing links or embedding assets. Label it with the Affinity generation, for example project_V2_mac_backup.afdesign.
  5. If you want a single-file handoff, embed placed assets where practical, save, close, and reopen the document on the Mac to confirm that the embedded version still displays correctly.

Embedding is not a substitute for a backup. It changes how the document stores content, so retain the pre-embedding copy until the iPad version has passed inspection.

Pick a transfer location the iPad can actually browse

Affinity’s iPad workflow supports choosing a local or cloud location, browsing from the Files app, and working with .afdesign, .afphoto, and .afpub files. The practical test is simple: the project folder must appear in iPadOS Files, and the Affinity app must have permission to read and save there.

Transfer option Version compatibility Linked-asset handling Files app access Backup and recovery
Local iPad storage Depends on the native file being supported by the installed Affinity version. Copy the complete project folder; links remain usable only if their relative location is retained. Supported when the folder is stored in a local Files location and made available to Affinity. Keep the Mac original and a second local copy before editing.
Cloud location visible in Files Same file-version rule; cloud storage does not convert an incompatible document. Upload the native file and every linked image or text file, preserving names and folders. Supported when the provider is enabled in Files and the content is downloaded or available offline as needed. Cloud history can provide an additional rollback, but retain an independent Mac copy.
Single embedded document Still subject to V1/V2 versus new-app compatibility. Embedded assets travel inside the file; external links still need their source files. Open the native file from a local or cloud Files location. Keep the original linked project as a separate backup because embedding changes the document.
Folder with linked resources Requires a destination app that supports the saved file. Most faithful when folder names, file names, and relative locations are unchanged. Browse to the folder in Files and grant Affinity access when prompted. Best for reversible edits because the source assets remain separate and replaceable.

Cloud synchronization is convenient, but a visible filename does not prove that every linked asset is available offline. Open the folder in Files, confirm that the native file and its resource folders are present, and wait for downloads to finish before launching the project.

Install fonts before opening the production file

Affinity’s documented behavior is explicit: “When you open a document that uses fonts not installed on your device, Affinity substitutes alternative fonts.” The substitute lets the file display, but it does not repair the design. The original font remains applied and is shown as Missing until you install it or deliberately replace it.

Prepare the font set on the Mac

  1. Make a list of every family and style used in the document, including regular, italic, condensed, display, and variable-font instances. A heading may use a different style from the body even when the family name looks identical.
  2. Confirm that you are allowed to install the fonts on the iPad. A desktop license is not automatically a license for every device or collaborator; follow the font maker’s terms.
  3. Obtain the original font files from the licensed source or your organization’s font manager. Do not rely on a screenshot or on a substitute with a similar name.
  4. Keep the font files with the handoff notes, but do not publish or share them beyond what the license allows. The project package can document the required names without redistributing restricted files.

Install and verify on iPad

  1. Install the licensed fonts on the iPad through the operating system’s supported font installation method or an approved font manager.
  2. Open the Affinity document and launch Font Manager. Review the status of every family and style used by the document.
  3. Filter or scan for entries marked Missing. A missing style can affect only a few words, so check the whole list rather than stopping after the headline looks correct.
  4. Close and reopen the document after installation. This forces the app to load the newly available font instead of retaining the earlier substitution.
  5. Inspect text frames, paragraph breaks, baseline alignment, hyphenation, and overflow indicators. A font with the same nominal point size can have different metrics and still alter the layout.

If the original font cannot be installed, make an intentional replacement in the document and record the change. Treat that as a design edit, not as a successful lossless transfer.

Move the project through Files and open it in Affinity

Mac-side steps

  1. Close the project or save it in a stable state on the Mac. Use a descriptive filename that includes the version generation if you maintain both V2 and new-app copies.
  2. Copy the native Affinity file into the prepared project folder.
  3. Copy every linked image and linked text file into the folder structure that the document expects, or embed selected assets and save a separate backup first.
  4. Place the folder in a local or cloud location that the iPad can browse through Files. Wait for any upload or synchronization indicator to complete.
  5. Leave the Mac original unchanged until the iPad copy has passed the validation checklist.

iPad-side steps

  1. Open the Files app and navigate to the local or cloud location containing the project folder.
  2. Confirm that the native file and its linked-resource folders are visible. If a cloud provider shows placeholders, make the files available offline before opening.
  3. In Affinity on iPad, use the documented open or template workflow to choose the local or cloud location, then browse from Files to the native document.
  4. Open the file rather than creating a blank document and importing only a preview. The native file is what preserves layers, text frames, links, and document settings.
  5. Allow the document to finish loading, then check Font Manager and the resource or placed-image indicators before making edits.

If the file does not appear in the Affinity browser, use Files to verify the extension and location, check that the app has access to the storage provider, and confirm that the file was not saved by an incompatible newer application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Validate the document before you edit or resave

Validation protects you from a quiet substitution or a broken link that is not obvious at normal zoom. Work through the checks in this order so you can identify the cause before making changes.

  • Version: Confirm that the installed iPad app is allowed to open the file generation you saved on the Mac. If the iPad runs V2, use the preserved V2 file rather than the new-app copy.
  • Fonts: In Font Manager, verify that no production font is marked Missing. Check styles, not only family names.
  • Linked images: Open every page or artboard containing a placed image. Look for missing-resource warnings, blank frames, low-resolution placeholders, and changed crops.
  • Linked text: Inspect imported text frames and confirm that the current external text is the intended revision. A link can resolve successfully while pointing to the wrong file if names were reused.
  • Text geometry: Compare line endings, paragraph count, widows and orphans, overflow indicators, columns, and baseline alignment with the Mac original.
  • Appearance: Check color profiles, transparency, blend modes, masks, and effects at 100% zoom. These checks catch a damaged or incomplete resource even when the page thumbnail looks normal.
  • Navigation: Toggle layers and artboards to ensure hidden content, symbols, and master-page elements are still present.
  • Output: Export a proof from the iPad only after the native document passes the checks. Compare the proof with a Mac export if the file is headed for print or delivery.

Save the iPad document under a new filename after validation. Keeping the untouched transfer copy lets you return to the exact state that arrived from the Mac.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

The iPad says the file cannot be opened

First check the app generation, not the filename. A V2 iPad app cannot open a document created or saved by the newer Affinity desktop app. Return to the Mac and open the preserved V2 copy, then transfer that copy. If no compatible copy exists, do not overwrite the only file while experimenting; keep it as an archive and use a device running the newer application when available.

Fonts show as Missing or the text reflows

Open Font Manager and identify the exact missing family and style. Install the licensed original on the iPad, close and reopen the document, and inspect all text frames. If the font is unavailable or its license does not cover the iPad, choose a deliberate replacement and rework the affected frames. Reflow is expected when glyph widths, x-height, kerning, or line-height metrics differ; it is not evidence that the file transfer corrupted the document.

Images are blank, replaced, or cropped differently

Check whether the source was linked rather than embedded. In Files, locate the linked image using the original filename and folder structure. If the project folder was reorganized, restore the relative arrangement or use Affinity’s resource controls to reconnect the file. Recheck the crop and transform after relinking; a successful connection does not guarantee that the intended revision was selected.

Linked text opens but contains the wrong revision

Verify the external text filename, modification date, and location. Keep versioned source files in the project folder instead of relying on a generic name such as copy.txt. If the text is meant to be frozen for delivery, embed or convert it according to your production requirements only after retaining the editable source.

The project opens from the Mac but not from Files on iPad

Confirm that the file extension is one Affinity supports, that the cloud provider is enabled in Files, and that synchronization has completed. A file that is online-only may appear in the folder but fail when Affinity requests its contents. Download the folder locally, reopen it from Files, and test again.

The document looks correct until it is saved

This usually means the wrong version was opened, a missing font was substituted, or a linked resource was unavailable during the first load. Keep the transfer copy, resolve the underlying issue, and save under a new filename. Do not replace the Mac master until a second open-and-close cycle on the iPad shows the same result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a two-copy workflow for ongoing Mac–iPad editing

For projects that move back and forth repeatedly, treat each application generation as a separate branch until the iPad version catches up with the new desktop app. Keep a Mac master, a V2-compatible working copy when required, and a dated transfer folder containing the native file plus linked resources.

  1. Choose one device as the authority for fonts, links, and final output.
  2. Before each handoff, duplicate the native file and record the source app generation in the filename or project notes.
  3. Copy the complete linked-resource folder, not only the document.
  4. Make the receiving device’s fonts available before opening the file.
  5. Validate links and text flow, then save a new dated copy.
  6. When returning the project to the Mac, keep the iPad-edited file separate until differences have been reviewed.

This process takes longer than dragging a single file, but it preserves a reversible history and makes it clear which version can be reopened on each device.

What a lossless handoff means in practice

A transfer is lossless only when four conditions are met together: the destination application supports the file’s version, every linked resource is available at the expected location, the required fonts are installed and licensed, and the opened document passes a visual and structural check. Cloud storage, embedding, or a successful file copy addresses only one part of that chain. The safest handoff is therefore a compatible native file inside an organized project folder, accompanied by the original Mac backup and a font list, followed by validation on the iPad before any production edits.
